Sup everyone.
Just curious to whats going on in the EVO community, as far as who flashed which ROM, and why. Maybe even provide a link to the ROM, or the dev site! That always helps too. So lets start with mine::

1) Which custom ROM are you using? (or Stock?)
- Currently running Fresh 0.2 Custom ROM. Loving the speed and nearly bugless experience. Custom navi-bar is a nice feature, but currently running LauncherPro on top of it.
2) Why are you using it?
- Considering its my first real ROM experience, Fresh seems to be the more popular of the bunch. Sticking with it until something else awesome comes out, or maybe this one can just get better. ^_^
3) Pros / Cons?
- PROS - Fast, reliable, nearly no errors, at all. Trust-worthy name in the ROM society. Removes unwanted Apps and bettery life seems pretty fair. Can only get better.
- CONS - Seem to be having trouble changing wallpapers. (getting FC?)

Its fast, stable and everything works.
Once the asop like builds and or froyi get mms receive / camera working I'll probably move to one of those.

No problems yet, but I havent done anything tasking with it.
Stock rooted 1.32.651.6 that Flipz provided. Took out all the stuff I didn't want, and put ADW Launcher on it. It's basically perfect now. I've been wanting to flash some other stuff but I haven't seen anything to sway me from this setup yet.
I've done about 4 of the
OMJ ROM's are stable, everything works, Sprint Apps are excluded. Advantages (since I'm new to Android) are different programs he puts in his ROMs. This is the one I use when I need my phone usable.
I tried the EVOlution ROMs. Froyo is definitely quicker and cooler. I can't wait until we can get it. There are too many things that unstable or unusable about it. I mean, I got kids so I NEED my camera at any given moment.
I flashed one that I didn't know what the difference was. That was really just a test for ROM Manager, which makes the process 100% easy. Just a few clicks and your done.
My next one which just finished DLing is DamageControl 3.0. He advertised well. Sposed to be quick stable and battery saving. All benefits to me.
I also use Titanium Backup so I can restore my customizations. Saves a bunch of time as well. Be careful though cuz a customization on one ROM could mean a bootloop on another.
I use OMJ's Vanilla "eclair" rom with all the sprint and htc crap removed. it's glorious!
Fresh 0.2 for me. Just because I liked his stuff on the hero.

Fresh 0.2. Flipz always did me right with my hero. Tried out the Evolution Froyo rom just to see how Froyo ran on the Evo. Definately nice. Can't wait to have a fully working rom. Tried OMJ for a while. Will probably stick with Fresh rom. He makes a pretty stable rom and always has some tricks up his sleeves for the next build.
I'm running RvU 1.3.2. I then used Buggless bloatware removal, installed Overclock..
I did it because of battery drain.. Before, I was getting about 8-12 hours of use + sleep (3g). Now, I'm pushing 35-40 with use and sleep (these results are when using wifi only, I'm still experimenting with 3g).
DamageControl v3 but switched to EVOlution V7 last night and it's running great.
Stuck switching between FroYo and DC.
I would love to have everything working, but it's just so hard with how sexy FroYo is
Flipz "Fresh Evo 0.2" ... and i upgraded to .3 using ROM Manager.
Running Baked Snack .7 . Stupid fast and I love his customization to the battery icon, notifications and the notification bar. Plus the battery life has been improved as well.
EVOlution v7...If I need a camera ill just load my saved 2.1 in a couple minutes and roll..

only tried fresh although I think it has a memory leak because my available memory keeps on going down the longer I keep my phone booted. Could be wrong.

Same, cant pull myself way from Avalaunch's ROM, Froyo is too nice....
Right now I'm running DamageControl v3.0, I really wanna tryp flipz fresh .3 but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get into adb on my comp, I've been googling and going through posts here for a few hours now to no avail

Tell me why you like it, what you like about it, which of your needs it meets, which it doesn't. And so on!!! I think this could be a good thread for the noobs to learn different things about different kinds of ROMs and what the different ones have to offer. Thank you XDA community!!!!!

Destroyer is awesome. Very fast and awesome theming. VaelPak is also really good b/c it's so unique and customizable. IMHO, if you're new to flashing, you need to try, CM or variant of, Miui, VaelPak, and a Z ROM (MikZ or Warm Z).
For sense ROMs, Unleashed is really good. Very fast/smooth and awesome theme options. Best sense ROM IMHO. MikFroyo is also very fast. I can get good battery life out of almost any ROM, but EViO 2 stands out in that area.
ive flashed alot of sense and about all of the gingerbread roms. the gingerbreads are fast, but too high maintenance for me. sure some will say that its stable for them but 8 out of 10 in the cm threads are trying to work out bugs.
theres also a lot of fast and fully functional sense roms highly themed. depends on what the end user whants out of their rom, functionality, look, batt, etc..
i like a bare bones stock sleek looking optimized preferably lightly themed rom. thats why im currently running Miks 4.6b2 ODEXED themed by Chogardjr. i removed all of the useless stuff, its faast, rock solid stable, great battery life and everything works. IMHO!
I have used almost every setup there is, and most are pretty good, except they all have an issue or 2 that makes me feel incomplete when it comes to my phone.
Sense Roms: King's Ultra Froyo and Ultra Froyo 2, Koni's Elite 1 and Elite 2. ALL of those are pretty equal. Very fast, smooth, beautiful looking, but no matter what kernel I tried, battery life was garbage. One thing about my phone is I tried almost every NetArchy Kernel there is, I bet, and never got a good battery on a Sense ROM.
Miui: I can see why people like it, but I just don't like having all my apps on the desktop and switching to LPP takes away part of the allure of havng Miui. The theme changer wouldn't install any of the themes I downloaded. Plus, I had issues with screen flicker, but I understand I did the update wrong, so that may be where that came from. Also, I spent over an hour alphabetizing my apps... damn OCD!
CM7: By FAR the best battery life, with the kernel I use, SavagedZen 009, but the GPS navigation thing is an issue. I take my phone off the charger at 6AM, and by 11PM, after moderate to heavy use, I'm never below 50%. Still, I want those Sense Widgets. LPP has them, but in People, for instance, you don't get the user pics from Facebook, and all the entries are just the stock Android image. One other thing on CM7, that is intolerable, is that it takes a coon's age to copy anything to my SDCard. I did a back up, and reformat the other night and it took an hour and a half to copy my music back (just under a gig), for example
Right now, I'm running Destroyer, and the battery isn't as good as with nightly 14, but it's pretty good. BEtter than with any of the others I've tried. And whatever issues people have with this, I'm not having them. Everything is working good. Very fast, too.
For me, the best, most complete ROM there is, is VaelPak 3.2. It has everything you want. Almost like all the different Mods were combined to make one insane ROM. More custumization options than CM/Sense and MiUi put together, puls packs of goodies that come with the ROM installed on the SDCard. I can't remember why I took it off now, but I think it was the battery life, again, was horrible. Dropped 15% in less than 2 hours with the stock kernel. Although, I didn't keep it on long enough to really test other kernels with it, and there are a few that people using it say give them fanatastic battery life.
I love my CM7 nightlies. Nuff said!!!!!! <3

Well I just started flashing ROMs about 9 months ago and started a basically sense roms. I didn't really like them bc of limited customization and they were a little slow and battery was horrible. From there I stuck with an AOSP rom for about the past 6 months until a few weeks ago and read up a little on MIUI and tried that out for a whole 6 hours and hated it. I couldn't stand all my apps on the screen and no drawer. Really got on my nerves. Then tried out that Unleashed and was happy with that for about a week til I really started doing some reading up on CM and decided to try it out, loved it and everything about it. So now I'm a supporter of them, but am super stoked to try out this new SZ ROM. Think that might be the new rom of choice for me.

Not sure why anyone hasn't said this yet but Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 5 is the best in my opinion. Might not have been updated in a while, but in my experience is the fastest Sense rom with lots of eye candy while still looking sleek/professional without going overboard, the best battery life (16 hours heavy use 30 with light use/good signal), and everything works. I know that AOSP roms have wimax now but gps has been hit and miss with every one of them (for gingerbread at least, I don't care for any 2.2 AOSP roms). Navigation definitely did not work.
I loved Evervolv and Savage but again, not everything works the way it should. Myn's is just the best daily driver. Battery life is phenomenal, I haven't been able to get more than 16-20 hours out of an aosp rom.
IMO (never h):
All the Sense ROMs are the same. They are just the same stock ROM with some heavy theming and maybe a custom tweak here and there ... but IMO if you're going to flash sense you're better off just checking the themes section and getting the look you want... because that's what they are.
Also keep in mind that Sense is likely a dead end as it is. I have doubts 2.3 will ever land on EVO .from HTC/Sprint... meaning it will never come to fruition in any Sense ROM. So it's a dead-end thing to support anyway.
AOSP is a different story. These are truly custom, already ahead of Sense if you're a version buff (2.3.3) and tend to run faster, smoother, and with A LOT less bloat. That said they aren't all flowers and rainbows either. Because they are actually scratch written they tend to not be feature complete (though team WIN is quickly changing that) so make sure you know what feature is missing and if that's a big deal to you.
That said, CM is the AOSP leader. It has the dev support, and most AOSP ROMs you'll notice are based on CM because they are nice enough to release under GPL rather than the default Apache agreement most others use. I like it for what it is, and it's the "best" if you like vanilla Android and want to follow what Google is doing with thier OS.
The other "best" IMO MIUI. It's behind CM in terms of the latest Android base (though GB is finally in the works), and it's closed source so it is missing things available in other AOSP ROMS ... but what it does bring to the table is amazing. It's better in battery, faster, the built in apps are worth paying for if they ever make it to market ... its an amazing ROM.
I secretly have wet dreams of MIUI and CM having an Android love child and bringing me my dream ROM ... until then I flip back and forth between the two.
I'm running a special rom called "dirk diggler rom" and if you want to use it deposit 500 bucks in my PayPal . P.S its better than any rom YOU will ever run on your evo lol.

The answer depends on your needs. For instance, I don't like the look of Sense but I also need 4G, GPS, Bluetooth and Camera working everyday. That limits me to a Sense based rom until CM7 stabilizes those things. For now, I'm getting by pretty well with Nonsense. It's not been updated recently and has minor flaws but the important things work for me everyday.
No one ROM does everything well. It's all about trade-offs. When you know your own needs, the filtering the choices should be a lot easier.

+1 on destroyer buddy! and its very stable!
In my experience with cm7 at least, scrolling in the browser and touch response has lagged for me compared to sense. Savage and evervolv seemed to be better but nothing comes close to the responsiveness using myns warm

I'm a noob here, but I'm a quick learner.
A month ago I rooted my AMOLED DInc. Initially I trimmed a bunch of bloat in an effort to extend my battery life a bit. It worked a bit, so I moved on to trying new ROMs. My first was CM 7.0.3. I quickly came to discover that I greatly prefer Sense.
My next step was to try a new kernel. I was disappointed by the lack of information regarding the strengths and weaknesses of kernels, so I have decided to take it upon myself to discover and share the information.
So here's my setup: I have an HTC Droid Incredible that I purchased directly from Verizon just a few days after it was introduced, so I have the AMOLED screen. I also have a 1750 mAh Seidio battery that I've been using since the beginning. If I don't use the phone much I can get more than 24 hours out of it. Light to moderate use takes that time down to 12 to 16 hours, while moderate to heavy use takes that time down further to 8 to 12 hours.
My typical daily usage pattern is as follows: 45 to 60 minutes streaming 128k MP3s over wi-fi, 60 minutes of news reading (Engadget app and Pulse reader) via EV-DO, K9 mail checking one email account every 15 minutes, 10 to 50 text messages daily, virtually no voice usage, using the Facebook app for up to 5 minutes every hour, updating the clock/weather widget once an hour, casual gaming for up to 45 minutes, and brightness at 20% most of the time but sometimes 50% or 100% depending on if I go outside. I get one or two bars of signal at work eight hours a day and two or three bars at home the rest of the time.
And thus, I set out on my journey to improve battery life...
I quickly discovered that I should stay away from AOSP kernels because I'm sticking with my rooted stock Sense. And I need only two point multi-touch since if I'm gaming it's nothing more that casual games or Angry Birds, but I have to have pinch-to-zoom. I searched for kernel suggestions and settled on three seemingly common and popular choices: HeyitsLou #9, incredikernel, and Ziggy471. After settling on trying these kernels, I devised a strategy to compare them using similar methodology.
While it may not be a perfect set-up this is how I am choosing to compare: I use ROM Manager to wipe the cache, the dalvik cache, and battery statistics. Then I apply the kernel and completely charge the phone. I use the phone just a little bit more than usual to take the battery down to 10% charge or less and then charge it fully. After that, I use the phone like normal but pay attention to how it's working. I use the kernel for a minimum of 48 hours and see how it goes.
My first choice in kernels was HeyitsLou #9. I was amazed at how well this kernel manages idle time. My stock phone usually loses about 10% idling overnight. With Lou #9 that number was down to 5 or 6%. Nice. #9 also seems to do a decent job of throttling the processor when engaging in simple tasks. I was able to get a bit more than 24 hours of moderate to heavy use under this kernel. My biggest disappointment, though, was how unresponsive to my touch the screen became. I initially thought I might have damaged my phone. Once I got used to it, it wasn't so bad. But the kernel definitely made me not want to use the phone much because it was so unresponsive and does such a great job at idling. I'm sure Lou took a lot of time on this kernel, but it clearly is not for me. Your mileage may vary.
Right now I'm trying incredikernel, version 2.6.32.27. I'll update this thread once my review is complete. After that, I will be trying Ziggy471 Droid Incredible (Sense) 4 Nov. If there are any other kernels you might like me to try, please make suggestions here. Just please remember my stated goal of extending battery life under rooted stock Sense.

That stock image is more likely killing more of your phone. Have you considered trying the modified Sense-based ROMs? These generally would more likely help you find better battery life over the extremely limited kernel selection for Sense-Based ROMs. I personally prefer SR4/desensitized.
Also, why wouldn't you want to try one of Ziggy's newer kernels? He is the only active(and not so much now) Sense-based kernel dev. His last release was from Apil 10th. Have you read up on the differences between schedulers used in said kernels(BFS vs CFS) or voltage management(SVS or HAVS)?
Since you're rooted and using the stock, have you tried SetCPU to adjust CPU settings?
If I try a Sense-based ROM, SkyRaider 4 is definitely the one I would go with (I already downloaded it). My only issue is that since I have my phone set up the way I want it, with certain apps and a particular layout, I don't want to lose that. I suppose Titanium Backup could help with that, huh?
And my only real dissatisfaction with CM7 was that it was too difficult to get my apps back. Would Titanium Backup help with that? I also downloaded the Google apps pack for CM7 but don't know what to do with it. I guess I just didn't try hard enough to put it all together.
As far as SetCpu goes, I'd rather try a kernel that does it for me than root around tweaking like that. Maybe that means I'm lazy...
I'll look around for other, newer kernels too.

I have been using CM7 and Chad's kernels for a while now. It takes a little time to get everything arranged the way you want them but it is well worth it. My phone easily goes for 24+ hours without needing a charge. I am a relatively light user but the combination of CM7 and Chad's kernels has much improved my battery life.
Increikernel seems to be better than stock at just about everything. True, it's not quite as good at managing idle power usage as HeyitsLou #9, but incredikernel is much more responsive for me. The battery life gain was minimal, but still noticeable. I liked this kernel enough I backed up the ROM so that if anything weird happens it is what I will be reverting to.
Now I'm on to Ziggy471, version 24 Nov. While it may not be the newest one, this is the newest one I could find for my phone.
I'm starting to research how to use Titanium Backup, since the only thing holding me back from trying ROMs is my unwillingness to lose the way my phone is set up. If I could get all my apps and the Android Market and Amazon Appstore on CM7, I would be willing to give it another try...
The Ziggy kernel seems to me about as good as stock. It has excellent responsiveness, but the battery life for me was not quite good enough.
I went back with Incredikernel. Now I'm researching how to use Titanium Backup so I can move on to trying SkyRaider 4.
Right now the biggest issue stopping me from trying CM7 is not knowing how to flash Google apps back onto the phone. I've read that all I have to do is install the zip from my SD card using Clockworkmod Recovery, but do so without wiping anything. Is this correct?
And does SkyRaider 4 come with the Android Market installed or would I have to do something similar?

So, I love Titanium Backup (totally worth getting the paid version in my book). You can certainly back up and restore the apps with it (though you won't be able to run Sense apps on AOSP), but restoring app data across different ROMs is generally ill-advised. So you'll lose settings and game progress and the like. Which, frankly, was kind of a good thing for me--the fact that I was trying different ROMs meant I stopped spending so much time playing games on my phone. TB has actually also resulted in my keeping a cleaner phone--since I can back things up and restore them if I need them, I can freeze or uninstall them.
I liked SR4, but I have to say, after spending time on CM7, about the only thing I miss from Sense is the dialer. It does take a bit of time to get things set up just so, but I agree that it's worth it. In terms of getting google apps on the phone, I personally just used ROM Manager to install CM7 and added the Google Apps package, but some people have trouble with ROM Manager. The short answer is that when you wipe and flash CM7 in recovery, then yes, you just also flash the Google Apps zip file, like you would flash anything else, and you should be set.
If/when you do check out CM7 again? The newest versions of Incredikernel are very nice. Chad is in the process of beta testing a new release, but like the 4/19, it's only for AOSP ROMs.
In any case, kudos for the systematic testing. I'll probably keep an eye on this thread.

No, TB only backs up your apps, you will need to setup your homescreens again. Some aftermarket launchers, like LauncherPro, have the option to save and restore your homescreens but it cannot do widgets, which make it generally useless in my case.
hey im sorta a newb as well and have a question. i have cm7 and chad's latest kernal beta 11. what cpu settings (max/low)/other settings do you reccomend to get great battery life??

Oh, I don't mind having to set up my shortcuts and such. I just don't want to have to download all of my apps again, especially the paid apps I got for free from the Amazon Appstore.
It sounds like TB should be able to help with that. I'm trying to be very careful with how I proceed so I can give each ROM I try a decent chance for success. And I'm starting to realize that the only Sense app I can't do without is the clock/weather widget. There are other similar apps available for free, so I just need to reassure myself that it's OK to try new ROMs (especially since it's so easy to revert to my current setup).
All I really need to do is poke around some more and talk myself into just doing it. And the encouragement here really helps. Thanks guys.

I'd recommend doing a restore of apps only, no app or system data. Do a backup before in case you run into any issues. I could be wrong but I thought even restoring apps via TiBU might be a little dicey when going from sense to aosp (especially froyo to gingerbread).
As for the HTC flip clock I felt the same way when I went to aosp and I'd recommend fancy widget pro. There's an HTC skin you can download that looks IDENTICAL to the actual HTC clock.

Does anyone have good feedback on using a custom kernel for any of the new GB Sense roms? I think most of these come with their own roms, but I'd like to hear about any other suggestions.
This morning I took the leap back into CM7 again. The ROM installed with no issues. The Google apps pack installed with no issues. I was feeling good about trying it again... then I tried restoring apps (only) using Titanium Backup.
Something clearly wasn't working correctly, since it took 20+ minutes to restore only three out of 76 apps.
I powered down and then installed SkyRaider 4. It went quite smoothly. I was able to restore 77 apps in about 45 minutes. It worked great. But then I started poking around in the phone. Most of the crap I removed from my rooted stock Sense ROM was back on the phone. Aaargh!
I restored my backup from earlier this morning (right before I started) and I'm going to be giving this ROM business a break for awhile. I'll see what happens around here once the official Gingerbread OTA update from HTC hits.
It seems that the root of my problem (pun intended) is that I'm simply not patient enough when setting up my phone. And I'm a bit lazy in that I don't want to have to re-download all my apps from the Android Market if TB doesn't work for me.
So until I promise myself to give a new ROM a fair chance, I'll just stick with my rooted 2.2 stock Sense ROM with incredikernel.
I'm open to suggestions on how to simplify this whole process though, guys.

I found some other kernels I'd like to try out: KiNgxKernel and Order. I downloaded Order and will try it in a few days but I can't find anywhere to get KiNgxKernels. ANd can anyone help me find a hydrakernel?

i understand you say you prefer sense, but i really encourage you to try MIUI. i have tried them ALL and this has by far been the best. better than CM7 in my opinion. using chad's latest kernel, battery life is more than excellent. the level of customization is as good as or better than CM7. i mean, you can always revert back, but if you give it a few days, you more than likely will be thanking me. you can find the download in the "development" section...sorry, i'm too tired to post the link. but go for it!
I've taken a look at a lot of ROMs over the last month. My issue with MIUI is that it looks too much like an iOS port. Reading a review of MIUI over at Android Central reinforced this impression. If I wanted an iPhone, I would have gotten one.
Living with Sense for the last year, I am used to it and how it works. I don't want to switch ROMs and have to download my apps again. I know Titanium Backup works for this, but it sure sucked when trying to switch to CM7. It worked great for switching to SkyRaider 4, but that ROM brought back a lot of the bloat I got rid of in the first place. When I really think about it, though, I don't use any Sense features -- no widgets, no apps, nothing but the clock/weather widget (an alternative to which I can easily find in the Android Market). But I'm thinking switching to a new ROM and having to spend a few days getting everything set up again just isn't worth my time and effort, especially when my current setup works better now that I've rooted it.
I know I just sound lazy and/or complacent, but at this point I think I will just stick with trying new kernels.
miui is an ios look alike with its stock launcher. install some other launcher and youll have an awesome rom.
Unfortunately there isn't any active development as far as sense kernels go..
^there's obviously a reason for that..
ive been using chad's incredikernel and would just like to say it is pure awesome. My battery life is greatly improved, especially usage while idle. The general UI snappiness is also excellent. Highly recommended and the dev is very responsive.

are you refering to elelinux v2.8. if so i do agree. its a great rom
the only thing im not a hundred percent on is the battery life. i have a monster 3300 mAh battery that usually last 5 days. but after changing from V2.7 to V2.8 it went through 50% in a day. im going to test it out over the next couple of days.
Yeah that's the ROM I was taking about the best so far, but just upgraded to a HTC sensation what a phone but battery life poor.

Great ROM, fast, stable, and looks great with LP+ senselike widgets and Beautiful Widget once every few days have to restart phone though as apps starts to fill up RAM and phone lags, otherwise ..... perfect!

the lite script version has a lot of app and programs missing.
Great if your going to install all your own dialer`s and phone bit and bobs.
and mms clients and launchers
blah blah blah...........
basically its the scaffolding for the user to add his own stuff.
id use the full version.
making sure you did a full data/cache/dalvik/battery stat wipe before you install.
its the best way

You would be surprised what you acctually need to make android run. If you dont replace those parts it wont function.
there is a lot of ways and blogs that people say will help you set up your hero.
But....
to be honest the best way ive found is
1) find a custom rom you like.
2) wipe everything on your hero (not the SD card.) and doing a full install.
3) add your desired apps and widgets
4) then make a nandroid backup
now if you mess around with setting or uninstall apps or firmware
you will always have a solid backup to go back to and try again.
its the best way to learn how your hero works.

i always go back to sense even though you lose speed, using tegro slide at the moment and its almost perfect

i do like it but it reminds me to much of froyo and i had a bad experience with froyo.
(shivers as cold feeling goes down spin)
but on the up side elelinux has just released V2.9
the update list looks impressive.
BUT......
the big question is whats he got up his sleeve for V3.0

I just picked up a Galaxy S2 and have been using it with stock for a while now. I've wondered whether or not I should root the phone. The only reason or thing i would consider doing is under clocking to get better battery life.
Should I root it for that? Is there a rom which is better than the samsung stock rom because I like the stock quite a bit.

I don't think underclocking would get you a better battery life more than disabling some services or push emails...
So yes, I suggest root for disabling services... SGSII sleep mode does good job either way...

This is what I've done to get a better battery life :
Get VillainRom 2.0 (you need to root your mobile for that), it really increase the battery life, and this is in my opinion the best thing to do.
Underclock your phone with setcpu.
Of course you should set your phone with basic parameters, like no GPS, no Sync, low brightness.

Well i know on the Desire Z (my old phone) I under clocked to 384 MHz and i got like 4 days battery life. I wasn't doing much intensive stuff on the device during that time but it was an improvement. As for the S2 I was able to get 1 day 4 hours and it was down to 5% with medium/light usage.
I was looking at MIUI youtube video and it looks pretty sweet, although the thread states some things still need to be done. Are their some ROMs which are 100% working order and bring some good benefits/hacks/tweaks?
What about the leak of the 2.3.4 update, i wonder how that is..
i used set cpu on my galaxy s to set cpu to 800mhz...made quite a big difference to the battery life...will.consider using it again on my gs2.

I think you should root and either flash a ROM which is known for good battery life, or at least use Titanium Back up (requires root) to remove/freeze(paid only) bloatware. There is a list of safe apps to remove stickied.

I rooted my phone the first day I got it because I want to use Titanium Backup to freeze wi-fi sharing apps to save battery.
Just root it. If you're here, you're considering rooting your phone. Add custom ROMs and root-only apps and try everything out. The cooks have done some impressive stuff. If you want to return it, unroot it.
My first phone ever that really didn't need a custom rom. The phone just does everything well. I use titanium backup and freeze apps I don't use.

Doing the same here. Don't think I'll go with a custom ROM, but I damn sure want to be able to freeze some (stock) apps
Probably a silly question but how do you root?
Must admit am very happy with the device and when you think what it's doing no wonder the battery depletes, but it's not that bad, can I read more about this rooting?

Ah that's a good point. I can root and don't have to use a custom rom but can if I felt like it. That's pretty good I think i'll do that

I don't wanna switch to a custom ROM wich is not optimized for dual core, or doesn't contains some cool apps like Samsung Kies, or not being able to play some media files...

Yes you really have to root in order to get rid of the wifi sharing battery drain problem of the SGS2 which will eat away as much as 20 percent battery per day. With root you can also use apps like chainfire, ad free and titanium backup

I want to root my phone but after downloading my stock kernel is saw it is a zImage... any help?
Also i found my stock firmware ... so if i switch to a custom one i can go back...but all the files are .bin, disc image files or lfs files.... i can't find information on how to flash with that.
