After much gnashing of teeth and unbelievably patient assistance I upgraded to a stock rooted GB.
I love it. I admit it...I was wrong:GB is THAT MUCH better than froyo.
So...
Is there any reason to bare the slings and arrows of outrageous sbf-ing to pop up to 595 or 6 or 1?

I was on .588 for a few minutes today from .340 and after upgrading to .595 it seemed a bit snappier. During my time on .588 the sync icon would not go away on my taskbar and the lockscreen took a few seconds to unlock. I'd say the upgrade to .595 is worth it just because you're set to get the OTA from it.

You shouldn't need to sbf at all to go from .588 to .595.
So I'm hearing that of the various 59x versions its 59FIVE that I wanna move to for compatibility with an OTA upgrade ? And there's a flash method via droid2 bootloader?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App
No... You will need to be stock froyo in order to receive ota according to p3droid
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I would stay with .588. I have heard it is a little harder than sbfing back to froyo. Also the .596 ota is coming out soon and it looks like the bootloader is changing. Once you make the switch to it there will be no way back to froyo. And currently there is no root for .596. I know I can easily sbf back to froyo from .588 so when a rooted version of the ota is released then I will make the next switch. If you are stable and happy stay where you are. If there are a few bugs that are bothering you. You might think about going to .595. Just read about getting back to froyo if you choose that route.

I was on. 595 for around ten minutes before I bootlooped my phone and the linux sbf worked like a charm.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
Would be nice if the new bootloader would be unencrypted...but that'll only happen in my dreams.

I am staying with the apex beta on 591 because it is aosp based and there is no bloatware to slow down my phone. I will update when the roms update.
i see no reason to switch as you cannot switch back to froyo.... not that i have any intention of going back I just have no desire to switch to the new version until a deodexed + rooted version slides out... i think its silly to even consider atm but thats just my opinion.
if you want OTA fine, but this is XDA... i thought we were all here because we DIDNT want the easy way.
I am more-or-less stable and happy on 588. So I'll just sit tight . But when the OTA upgrade becomes available from Moto Ill have to be back on Froyo ? Or is the jury still out on this?
Thx for getting back

The problem as I understand it is that Verizon wants that bloatware on there, it's a revenue stream for them. Especially the Verizon app store - pops up on my screen every time I plug my phone into my computer.
I have read that in the new Gingerbread release, it will be the first icon in the tray because the icons will no longer be in alphabetical order. That will make finding the correct icons so much easier in the menu.
I can't wait.
So Buttes says 595 will ota to 596, but owenbeales reports thar p3droid says unrooted froyo s necessary to OTA .... Anybody got clarification ?
Also...any opinions on ota596 with bloatware performance compared to the previously released 59x rooted stocks?

Dear Mr Root.
Please hear our prayers to root our Gingerbread devices!! Everyone knows that stock rom's are just plain old boring, and no fun at all. We need something to play with and break We wake up each morning, just hoping for that 'miracle' on XDA.

Really....another thread about getting ROOT. This does not help and only clogs up the board with uselessness. There is a sticky at the top of the General section or posts just like this called: Off Topic Lounge.

No, it is for general information about the evo, not to start a thread about praying for root. What does this post provide? Nothing.

My phone kicked the bucket so I had to call in insurance and I was forced to use gingerbread with the new bootloader and I came from cm7 running a tiamat sbc kernal, and its not stock sense that pisses me off (however I do prefer asop) but its the stock kernal the battery life is a joke I have the 3500 extended battery and I still need a bigger battery

I am done waiting, I returned my phone for my MoPho (Mototola Photon 4G), and have rooted it WebTopless, (without a dock). Also, I hate the fact that the phone has such little internal storage, and I do miss Sense, but I have a Sense Launcher. I have a Front Facing Camera, and a kickstand.
I have an Otterbox Defender Case/Holster and now I have to mod it and add dust filters for the two microphones...

To keep things closer to your dad's experience there's FishmanMod which is an update to a very popular Bionix -v 1.3.1 Rom. It will fly compared to stock but everything works and it won't be totally unfamiliar to the dad.

be careful, the GS4g and Vibrant may look the same, but their flashing procedures are a bit different. read up and then do it.
Adding on to xriderx66, use this guide if you need a reference when backing up & flashing a custom rom to your dads phone... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
Since he's already rooted start from: "OKAY, I HAVE ROOT - NOW WHAT? BACKUP!!!"
If your dad is happy with the stock ROM (with the exception of the speed) then I would definitely suggest going with something like the fishman mod that is based on the stock 2.2 ROM. That'll make sure he still has all the stock apps and such. I used Bionix for a LONG time and was always really happy with it.
I'm gonna show him bionix and see what he says

I suggest showing him Fish's version of Bionix for the mere reason that Fishman is supporting it daily, while Team Whiskey is no longer.

Rooted but I staid on stock for a pretty long time until revone came along. I only used that to solve a bad kernel wakelock I was experiencing and knew was fixed in 4.2.2. I wanted to go to stock 4.2.2 but can't since now my device is s-off usage reporting to HTC is on and can't be turned off and that is causing bad battery drain too.
But I think all in all the One is so good out of the box there isn't really a big reason to root....

There have been a few bricks on aosp and a few bricks with custom roms that I've read about, I believe that the problem is just random faults HTC, can't expect to have so much going on in a phone, mass produce it on a large scale and not have some phones shutting off permanently for unknown reasons. Sorry for ot. I rooted to see what my one is capable of, tried nearly every Rom but now I'm very content with a stock custom rom that allows me to modify and personalise everything that want

I'm stock and unrooted but planning to root after warranty time/no OTAs I love rooting and flashing (got a HTC Desire before and changed it every week ) but always take the OTAs until HTC announce there are no further updates anymore.
I'm pretty satisfied with the One unrooted though. Maybe only (real) negative aspect so far is decreased battery life compared to rooted devices.
