Gee thanks SE - turns out this app does not work on the Arc. So here are 2 questions:
1. does anyone use the SE Sync service? Would it have saved the SMS?
2. Does anyone know of a way to read/decrypt the backup file so I can extract some raw text?
It has already been said on the Sony Ericsson developers blog that the Sony Ericsson backup and restore app is incompatible with gingerbread. It has been stated that 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 will not have the backup and restore app, so I would recommend you try one of the other apps on the marketplace that will work on gingerbread

I don't read the SE developer's blogs.
I have an X10 backup file that I'm looking to decrypt - once I've done that and saved what needs saving I can use the regular apps.

If I was able to link you- I would, but this is a secondary account after my primary account email got deleted and I forgot my password to my primary account.
the only way I know around this is to get another app that does backup and restores and use that. there is plenty available on marketplace

Yes but they can't read the SE file... I traded in my X10 for a big discount on the Arc so I don't have it handy...

that would be because the SE backup and restore tool encrypts its backups. I do not know how to decrypt it

That's the first thing I did - They've given me the run-around. Bloody annoying.
What I'll probably do is go to the shop I got the Arc from and ask to borrow their display X10 for a few minutes.

thats about all you can do. I would prefer SOny Ericsson did what they did to release the handset earlier. The last thing we want is a 7 month delay over something so insignificant
I used Backup and Restore version 010935 to restore just my sms messages when migrating from my X10 to my Arc.
Contacts were pulled from my Google account, and the only thing i really wanted was my sms messages.
Others have reported success restoring other data, but it is not advised to restore system settings, because obviously, it's not the same system.
Got a lot of the info from this SE forum: http://talk.sonyericsson.com/message/65988
You can get the file here.
It has been suggested to download the program directly from SE's site, but that link doesn't really work. This is the APK that somebody extracted.

You can't. Need to wait for root
If you can handle it I found a Factory reset seemed to stop Moxier being active and I got almost instant results.
See the Power Use thread for more.
You can't uninstall from the phone - not sure if you can just delete the thing from the SD card though - it may cause it to fall over...
Hi all, thought I'd ask SE for help on this one.. and this was the response.. I'm going to try it and see...
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre regarding your Sony Ericsson X10 handset.
We can confirm that you can not remove any application that came preinstalled on the Sony Ericsson X10 handset. Therefore Moxier mail can not be removed. We have however included some steps which should enable Moxier from starting up when not in use.
1. Go into your menu and select settings.
2. Select Applications
3. Select manage applications
4. Select Moxier mail
5. Select clear data then select Ok
6. Then go down to Coontrols and select Force stop
This should disable the Moxier mail.
Kind Regards,
Emma Anderson
Sony Ericsson UK Customer Services
I click on Force Stop and nothing happens ...
@ SE...
I don't think anything will visibly happen.. it's more about what shouldn't happen!! ie Moxier starting up on its own!!
Ok, then SE needs an UI (or is UX) guy there to tell them about the feedback the user should receive after taking an action ...
SE support really are hopeless... I've just tried this (with startup auditor switched off.) and guess what.... moxier started up when I switched the wifi off... and so I killed it.. and it started again when I switched the wifi on.. back to startup auditor I think!
Startup Auditor won't help with that because Moxier Mail starts up when Data Connection Change event fires (ie whenever you switch from 3G to WiFi or vice versa), and that's an event SA doesn't autokill apps at.
I've alerted the developer and he's going to add it back in so long as it doesn't cause issues.
Hi guys,
New poster here but have been lurking for a while. I too have been having the same issues as others with Moxier Mail so got on to SE Support to help. My first email was greeted with the same response as one of the posters above so I responded with the following:
Me said:
Hi Emma,
Thank you for your prompt response but I regret to inform you that the method you suggested for disabling the moxier application only works for 5-10 seconds until another data connection is made or another call is received. This ridiculous piece of software is ruining what should be an amazing phone. Whoever thought it a good idea to let it run the way it does should be given a stern talking to at the very least.
If you or anyone else in your technical department have any suggestions on how to get rid of moxier to make my phone last longer than 8 hours without needing a charge, even though I haven't used it, then I would be greatly appreciative.
Kind regards

Hi Emma,
I should have said in my last email, but I don't have moxier set up at all. I have entered no settings in to it to activate it, nor do I intend to.
It seems to start up as soon as any data connection is initiated. Be it turning on wi-fi or turning it off and going back to GSM or 3G. It will initiate on resuming from sleep mode and when a normal phone call is made. I know that I am not the only person with this problem. It is literally happening the world over according to the numerous fora dedicated to the x10 that I have found.

I am having to use android task killer to periodically kill moxier. I have never done anything with it either and my battery was down to 50% within an hour or so after it had been on charge overnight. Since using task killer its been much better.
Only had X10 about 3 days and impressed with most things but very annoyed for the general consumer who would never use an exchange server but forced to not be able to uninstall moxier stuff on an other wise Flagship phone. maybe Sony can supply a firmware update which allows us to remove or disable it.

Most definitely im_iceman.
For what it's worth by the way I am on O2 Ireland with this phone, locked to them.
Seems we all are having these issues with the freaking Moxier. My solution is Task Panel all the way and adding moxier to the Kill section.
Cant wait to root and forget about this little thingys that are screwing up the total enjoyment of this expensive device!

Looks like this is going to be the only way. I just called Sony Ericsson's help desk and got put through to a vegetable. He advised that there was no way to shut it off, even though i didn't activate it, Sony wouldn't come up with anything to alter it as it's part of the phone and it does that to make switching easier (after i told him i hadn't used it and never planned on using it), and there was nothing they could do.
Gotta love customer service lol
Does anyone know if it can be updated to the latest version at least? Everytime I do the update, it says I have the latest version which is not true. Thanks in advance.
Why do you need to uninstall Moxier ? Just because it is in the kernel stack does not mean it's using any resources...
I use Moxier daily and it has little effect on my battery.....

That's a good point.. I was wondering about it myself today.. I don't use moxier, but there seems to have been a wave of mistrust developing about the app...I've currently got Startup auditor and task manager keeping it off.. but actually not run any tests to see if it's a problem... tell you what.. right now at.. 2217.. I'll take it out of Startup auditor and task manager and see what happens.. will report back later!

I have an Xperia X10 that I rooted as soon as the root was available and it worked great unfortunately I had an app that was causing me some issues and I thought id factory reset the phone.
The only apps I have are now:
Phone book
Browser
Dialler
Alarm clock
Calc
Calendar
Camera
email
Gmail
Google talk
Maps
Market
Messaging
Settings
SIM tools
Youtube
This would not be a major problem but I also dont have the Keyboard app so im unable to enter any settings make any changes etc.
Please help, ive pretty much bricked the damn thing
Does anyone have any ideas or somewhere I can download the original FW I can flash from the Micro SD card?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

btw, the best way to solve your problem is to take a simply reset, this will solve all your trouble.

Apparently mods are not the only ones who don't read posts around here.
To the OP, try using the flashtool to throw another firmware onto the phone, since a reset didn't work?
Or just install a keyboard through adb...
Just use the usb cable to transfer a keyboard app across and then a file manager to instal it.. happen to me once.. ul b fine ;-)
btw I see u mentioned no timescape.. when u go into phonebook can ya view contacts or do you get an error?!
Ps - just my tip.. upto you if you wana try it.. but seen as I use chompsms, dolphin browser, and kaloer clock.. I got rid of the alarm clock, browser and messaging!! lol got rid of email cause don't use it really, left gmail though cause there always seems to be something linked with google stuff and messes up when ya get rid of it

Hi what's the best way to backup everthing before I change from 23 rooted to 26 rooted oh is there a list of what can be removed from the phone without causing problems when I first rooted I went a bit mad and couldn't use the phone properly so had to reroot but would like to remove anything I won't use oh and one other thing which keyboard app do people think is thanks to the devs

Erm for backup there's mybackup n titanium backup, pretty much similar but ud have to see what best suits your backing up needs. titanium backup is also useful for saving app data such as the settings so saves fiddling about and mybackup allows you to also save contacts, msgz n so forth!
Advance notice - backing up stock apps with titanium backup is useless cause it doesn't show a restore option for it..
Google stuff I tend to avoid cause usually some sort of link to market o suma
No Mediascape would prevent you setting wallpapers except stock ones I think.. but I'm alright cause I just use third party apps!! I think some people have mentioned something about attaching mms errors. upto you tho
No Timescape would result in errors when trying to open up contact details.. some people use other apps such as acontacts or takephone (i fink thats what its called) to make up for it!
I've removed the standard email app cuz I don't use it (not the google 1)
I did take messaging off once to replace with chompsms but suma started to go wrong, delays, missing msgz! so avoided that!
Ive uninstalled the alarm clock n used kaloer clock although used to get the odd few errors here and there.. minor!
you can get rid of the keyboards if you only want to use the one.. id suggest swype! so easy messaging.. god knows what I'd do without it!!
Im sure there's a thread with better info on what's safe to uninstall.. just need to search.
ok I think I should stop for now lolz.. already an essay!! jus saw no replies so jus saying whatever came to mind..
hope its of any use.. if you need any info, jus drop me a PM n il try help ya if I can!!

Ok so i have a question, i have an older sister up in a different state and my dad bought her a brand new epic for xmas. Its not activated yet til she gets it obviously so i was wondering:
1. if i sent it to her rooted so i can give her mobile ap and custom kernal all that fun stuff, will sprint know anything if they are just transfering contacts from her old sanyo pink regular phone?
2. Can it be rooted before activation?
Would Greatly appreciate someones insights,
Thanks

only thing about rooting her device and putting all the cool stuff on it is... she's going to have to do all the updates manually. do you trust your sister to do that? if so, go crazy. i sent my brother a pre rooted EVO and he's still running 2.29something. doubt he'll ever make it because he doesn't have the patience to sit on aim with me while i walk him through it and he's dumb as a brick (too dumb to brick it, even)
butttt i work at a sprint store and i'd ask her about her mod and which one it was.. i wouldn't report her or anything.. in fact, there is no protocol to do so. they just don't support the devices - eg. you wont get her screen replaced if bad software killed it under warranty if they can find evidence of tampering with the software
lol but i would support it. then again, im here

U mean the 2.2 update? i dont think she will care that much honestly.

There is numerous ones out there just Google transferring phonebook software. I can't remember what I used to have when I worked for T-Mobile something along the lines of Data Pilot I think but don't quote me. Not sure about the rooting question though. I've had the opportunity to root before activating. If you do root before you activate and it does work let me know for future reference please and thank you.
I found it easier to manage my contacts via Google Contacts instead of trying to clean up transferred data from my 4 year old flip phone.
What I did in Google Contacts:
Created a new group labeled "Android"
Cleaned up, added, removed contacts (Initial cleanup took 2 hours, subsequent cleanup is now only 1 minute.)
Assigned the "Android" group to those I wanted in my contact list in the phone.
What I did in the phone itself:
Went into the contact preferences and selected "only show contacts with #s"
Deselected all of the groups from Google Contacts and only selected "Android" to sync
Then I linked Facebook to my phone to allow the auto-sync (for contact photos)
Finally I manually attached FB accounts to contacts that didn't auto-sync
When I want to add a new number, I add it to my Google account from the phone's contact manager, then later just add the "Android" group via the Google Contacts website.
This was the easiest method I found to keep my contact list clutter free, while still utilizing Google Contacts to it's full potential.
Heyy I have had the xperia arc since o2 release on the 19th April.
1 question where is the file manager and personal profiles etc.
Also what app is used to take screenshots as looking at android market all the apps there say the phone has to be rooted.
Thanks in advance,

There are many file manager & personal profile apps in Market
I use Astro file manager to manage my files
Root is available for ARC, so you can root your device... Without rooting you can use MyPhoneExplorer to take shots (need to be installed on device + on PC)
Thanks for the tips downloaded that file manager new to android

1 other thing what are you using to root the arc? I seen a thread HERE Is that what your all using?
About root, i think you should wait a little more for custom stable roms.
Im looking into it since im new to android too
Depends what you want to root for, and if your phone is unbranded and sim unlocked?
If it is.. then you can unlock the bootloader and flash a rooted kernel. here..
then root here..
I rooted mine to delete some stuff and install screen shot apps, and reboot widget!.. awaiting kernel to allow overclocking..
voice dialer
Where can I find it? According to the help files it should be in the application list but it's not there... in gsmarena's test it says there's 'a dedicated homescreen widget' but I couldnt find anything as such in the widget list.
I need it and I don't like the idea of browsing through the market for finding applications for each missing feature (yes, I'm a beginner in Android )
