What Do I Need Installed Before Rooting Xoom - Xoom General

Ok, so I've downloaded the from MediaFire, done a back up of everything I want saved and took an extra aspirin and Nitro pill just in case I go into cardiac arrest (well advised for me, since I just bricked my 2-month old DX a few days ago using a "one-touch" method for gingerbread).
Now, do I need any specific files or apps in my Xoom before I root it, like Titanium Back up?
Also, please bear with me with this because I am new, but I actually don't know what to do next. I mean, I know I should connect my Xoom (wifi/3g/4g model) using a usb cable. I also have the drivers installed on my computer, but I just don't know where to go to next.

ive always been an adb person so I rooted with that but for something fast and simple id recommend this seems to be workingbfor ablot of people

Thanks. I have read that one, but it doesn't tell me exactly what do I do once I download & extract the files (which I have). You'll have to excuse me, but I am just being cautious because of my DX.

It does tell you what to do:
Instructions:
1. Unzip the tool and all of the folders and files into a directory. Preferably a folder on a root drive. (i.e. c:\xoom )
2. Run the Xoom One Click EXE tool and follow the instructions. Read the prompts carefully.

Ok, but I do know exactly what a "root" file is. When I look at my system (Windows 7, 64 bit), I do not see a file/folder named "Xoom".
Also, is that saying that I do it on my computer, or to the Xoom (putting the rooting files) into it?
Again, please bear with me. Also, I do appreciate your help.

No problem and just to let you know, I have not rooted my Xoom but have rooted my phone.
You need to extract the ZIP file you downloaded somewhere on your hard drive on your computer. The instructions recommend a root drive like c: but I don't think that matters. Just extract it somewhere and know where it is. You run the RootMyXoom.03.exe file where you extracted the file and follow the prompts.
There is nothing needed on the Xoom other than placing it in Debug mode which the tool will tell you how to do that when launched.

You got nothing to worry about
I used the one click method yesterday to root my WiFi Xoom it was easy. even though its really not one click its more like 5 to 10 but if u just read what it tells you to do as its going threw i think my 5 year old niece could follow the directions

Ok, one last thing before I break out the defibrillator and do it.
I have the 3g/4g/wifi model. Should I be on wifi, or 3g mode when I do it?

All right, it says that I am now zoom zoom Xoom, and to install a govnr (or something like that. Is it done?

I can't tell you because I have never used it but what is the reason you rooted in the first place? I know the DR Screenshot app only works if you are rooted. Can you install and take a screenshot without error?

Before my DX went south of the border, I had it rooted. Screenshots are not on my todo list, but overclocking is. I also want the ability to power on/off using an icon in the extended controls.
But basically, I want to get the most out of this $600 toy in speed.

Well the message sounds good so I would say you are ok. I only used the screenshot example as a test. Try something that requires root and see if it works.

Galaxy Tab P-1010 WiFy only

If you are frustrated with Samsungs total lack of support for this new device let me share with you some solutions that will make you change your mind about how you feel about your new Galaxy Tab WiFy only.
First; Root it!!!
Download the z4Root App and do it with one click........painless and you are set free and on your way.
Second; Download One Click Lag Fix from the Market ,
this is a magical app for this Galaxy Tab , it unlocks its full potential. Thank you Ryan!!! Give him a raise please!
Just make sure BEFORE you run the app move ALL of your apps from the SD Card and place them back on your device, you can move them back to the SD Card after you run the app if you like. If you try and run this app with apps on the SD Card you will send your device into a boot loop so please make note of this.
Result; Snap and Speed Clocked 1900 on Quardrant, smooth scrolling and blazing speed browsing this has become a completely different device , I now love this Galaxy Tab and I am going to keep it!
Doesn't show in the market for me
one click lag fix app
if you search one click lag fix in the Market in comes up as RyanZA OCLF, this is the app you want for a very small price well worth it!
Could not find z4Root in the market but there should be a thread here in XDA or search it on your device and direct download the apk file
It's Wifi, not Wify.
you definitely do NOT need to pay for OCLF. it's widely available for free on the web.
also, i noticed no difference after OCLF (benchmarks don't mean **** for actual device usage), so I uninstalled it.
the app's needed

when looking for One Click Lag Fix search for OCLF
when looking for z4Root search for z4root
PS.... i would post links but cant till i hit the 8 message spam thing ill PM person who started the topic to see if he can include the files

u should be able to go to menu, settings, applications, manage applications then find skype and unistall
but to answear ur question directly when u install z4root and open the app it will say root,
if its already rooted u should see re-root or undo root..
Thanks
After rooting look for Skype to uninstall but not there. The issue is that if installed then uninstalled Skype seems to leave, based on other board comments, that residual Data file and thus can't be reinstalled. My understanding is that once rooted one can then locate that hidden file and delete it so can reinstall Skype but this doesn't seem to be the case, does it? I can't find that file.
When Temp rooted and restart z4Root it does offer an Re-root option so (now using V1.3) it has been rooted.
Perhaps there is a difference in rooting between Temp & Permanent but wouldn't think so
Appreciate your help

Wow, very convenient. I used to work on 52nd and 5th which would be a lot better than downtown by the Seaport.
I wonder what time would be the best to go?
Thinking about it, but I'm unclear if they'll update my LTE or if this is wifi only thing. If not....what? I have to wait to Verizon to update...?
For all you kind folks that are going to the event. Please make a backup copy of the files Samsung sideloads for you, so we can get a copy that day.

Not a stupid question. I would use a File Manager & copy the files to another folder. Depending on how the file manager handles coping, you either press on the file until a menu comes out or hit select then select which files you want to copy then go to a folder & hit paste.
I would think that you would use Odin to make a complete copy of ROM and apps.

But if they are sideloading will they be leaving the files they sideload on the device or will they be deleted by them?
I was thinking about this earlier, how they are going to load and if they will delete the files or not.
Would this lock the tablet? Anyway to prevent that. I might go however I would like to keep my tablet unlocked.
yeah I would imagine they dont just give you the file and let you go from there... id imagine you give them the device and they give it back with the update already installed and finished...
i doubt they'll leave the file on there...
I called them at NYC Columbus circle they said 1PM is press conference so come at 3PM tomorrow for update. They will update it between 3PM to 6PM. The person said make a backup because it will wipe everything on the device.
Will they be steaming this?

My GT is so new and I have not really added any files that I don't really need a backup. I am not rooted so I don't even know how I would backup, does TB work on here without root?
On a side note I was actually thiking about restoring to stock before I go so I don't have any of my accounts/passwords in the tab when I hand it over to them.

that my friend is the million dollar question. You are probably right in that they probably won't leave the file laying around so you can share it with others. Maybe it will be an update file that you boot into recovery & run it from there. I'm thinking that will be the easiest way, correct me if I'm wrong here.
I might just fly out there for the day just to do this. If I do, maybe I could rip the update. I'm not a fan of New York though and I'd be lost, but whatever
I just gave them a call and this "event" will only update the Wifi version. LTE will be updated through Verizon whenever that happens

Galaxy Tab 7.7 Speed Tweaks ADW EX [ROOT]
Thanks, some nice stuff in there, even if a lot of it is really a ADW.EX tutorial.
Just fyi, you have a typo in the video description--you say ADX EX launcher.
About Customize Menu--you can reorder (or remove theoretically, but this was buggy for me) the items that appear on the top bar and in the drop-down when you push the menu button. I use this so that I can have Add in the menu, because I keep the top bar hidden and there is no other easy access to add/remove/move home screen pages.

I have to try this when I get home, the homescreen redraw drives me nuts, and its completely unecessary imo!
EDIT - OMGGGGGGGGG finally, the tablet has no effing homescreen redraw lag, thank you Jade Eyed Wolf!
Oh, oh. Just did this and now the tablet won't start!!!! I just get the initial "galaxy tablet 7.7" screen and then it stays black....
Any ideas? The only thing I changed was this
"Add this line to "/system/build.prop":
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0"
Help!!!!!
can someone post a copy of their build.prop (6810)? Would that help?
I can get into recovery, but rebooting form there doesn't do anything.....
Anyone with any bright ideas?
I can get into recovery, but I can't connect to the device via the pc to get at the files. well, that isn't quite true, I can see them if I use a pgr called DROIDEXPLORER, I can copy from the device to the PC but not back the other way. So I tried to edit the build.prop locally and push it back (using droidexplorer) but the one on the device just stays the same with the edit above in it...
I'm now considering flashing a new FW as the only way to get the tab going again.
Any help?
followed instructions and still couldn't write to sd card with ES File Explorer. Can't tell with homepage redraw... What's bad is that this killed my internet connection. After rebooting, the status bar shows me connected to either my home wifi or my H+ service provider but I can't access the internet nor my local network... Restarting the 7.7, deleting the relevant lines, restarting my router/cable modem (still have internet on my main comp and ipad) all didn't help.
I guess I have to reflash my 7.7.
OK, so after a sleepless night (the little one was on full song) I reflashed my Tab this morning and way hey! It is back in the land of the living.
Pheww.
Jade, I think the hack to keep the homescreen in memory might need to be revisited? I followed the instructions to the letter. After applying the hack the device just would not come to life. It wasn't a case of screen-off, device on either. I plugged it in to a PC and there was nothing. The only way I could get the PC to see it was to start it in recovery.
Maybe it is just a combination of things on my machine and I guess these things can just happen, but I think it might be worth checking?
I'm totally happy with flashing now though
Just thought this could use a bump since it was so helpful to me.

It worked for me (Galaxy Tab 7.7 wifi) so you probably entered something wrong... Actually I realised that after entering "ro." the keyboard inserted a space after the dot, so it looked like this: ro. HOME_APP_ADJ=0 and it is like this: ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0 see the difference?
I realised right away and fixed it. If I were you I would try it again....
It works for me alright, I don't know if at the end uses too much ram and slows down other things, if it does I'll just delete that line and that's it....

So, I would advise caution with this line. Take a backup before trying it or get comfortable with reflashing.

You can mount external storage via USB OTG without all what you did, I've been using it a few months and I'm Stock/unrooted
Just plug everything in, open ES File Explorer, Select USB from left panel and you get the pop up to execute USB, only thing your edits are doing differently is executing the pop up automatic on plugging in a USB device which is nice if rooted.

Strange I have never seen seen that USB thing on the left panel before. I have also tried CM file manager once didn't work Astro no luck again. But with what I have done everything is easier now for me. That's why I also made a video so people that didn't know about this can try it out.
if you had to root to make the mod work why not just install stickmount? no mods needed, works for me. am I missing something?
Neat. If you can mount it, how can you install Ubuntu Touch on a flash drive and boot from there?
First off he didn't do anything. Its native to cm based Roms. If you are running stock you will need an app like Stickmount.

Bloatware Tool

http://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-remove-bloatware-from-your-android-device-xda-tv/
Does not need root access, you can remove .apks with it if you have root access, but it lets you disable without.
Download the Debloater tool, turn Debugging on, plug your phone in, start the program.
I just disabled LG Health on my Verizon phone with it. I would like to disable VoiceMate but I'm not sure what the .apk is. My apologizes if this is already known to work on the G4; I haven't seen it mentioned in the G4 forums, but I can confirm it does work.
Maybe someone can use this tool and compile a list of apps that are safe to disable using it.

Funny you link an xda item from reddit back to xda...

lol. /fail. //endthread
I suppose, I'm just waiting on someone to get down to the nitty gritty and get a list going of what can be disabled.

Attached is a block list I used on the VZW LG4 I had... Just load it up with the debloater and block away.

No problem but be sure to add DTIgnite to the list, I missed that one. You will probably be better off uninstalling the DTIgnite update and disabling it from the app manager. That's the worst bloatware/spyware I've seen them preinstall. It's terrible.
I'll play along. Everyone knows I love debloating!

I gotta say, I just went through the list you gave me....
I had probably about 60% of the apks you listed disabled already. But that other 40% (while getting rid of CHROME) and switching to Firefox....made a world of difference.
Holy smokes, this phone is flying now. There is absolutely zero lag and it seems way more touch responsive.
Thank you.
So, this only Hiden the apps or disable them like titanium backup?
wath I need to disable for lg health and voice mate?
thanks

if you DL a DT Ignite tool and check, if it's disabled it still apears, albeit disabled. If you use this utility to hide it, it's not even found. Much bettet.

I've been debloating a long time. ?
I haven't done it yet, I only have one computer that has fully working adb drivers, but try disabling the lg keyboard and split window as well. I hear they're both to blame for touch problems.

It disables them.
Thanks for this! Only thing is I can not install my drivers for my vs986. When the computer restarts as part of the process installing the drivers, nothing happens when the computer is fully restarted. I searched for 2 hours for the solution to this. Any help would be appreciated.

I had to install the Verizon software assistant when you first plug the phone in to the PC. After that the debloat tool recognized it. Also make sure you have USB debugging enabled on the phone.
Dang I was all excited until I realized I needed a Windows box. Guess I'll have to wait to get home and dig out my old laptop to do this.
I have to figure out how to install the drivers on a mac. I know it is possible. this debloater works on a mac as there is a .dmg file for it. I can not use the verizon software assistant because it only works on a pc. Thank you for your help though.
I feel stupid asking this but I can't get my adb drivers to work with my g4.

Can you not create a virtual machine with either Apple OS or Linux (or even run in Wine if you are using Linux)?
I can but its easier just to go home and use a windows laptop.
