first off, I'm a long-time X10 user for my personal needs. I've been saddled with an iPhone for work, and been looking forward to a gingerbread phone to switch over to (my company's internal apps only support Blackberry, iOS4 and gingerbread). I've been itching for the Arc since seeing it's droolicious lines, so how's it stack up?
First off, the mandatory p0rn shots:

Yes, Arc is sexier.
Screen on:
Again, the Arc leads the pack... by a mile...
In over 24 hours of full use (currently the iphone is my primary work phone again for data migration to the Arc), I've found the arc to be zippy, responsive, a joy for games, and great for video.
Battery life:
The battery life has been good! I only notice a drain when running Whatsapp, but that drains the battery on the iPhone like a $%&^$%# as well. But so far, it's lasting me a whole day easily.
Screen: gorgeous! Yes, it's not as fine on the pixel detail as the iPhone 4's screen, and the IPS technology of the iPhone 4 gives some slightly better viewing angles, but honestly I can't complain. It's bright, colorful, and a joy to just stare at.
Keypad: Very fast, responsive. No complaints, and i prefer the android spell checker 100000x over the iPhone version. I just wish I knew how to turn on my Smartkeyboard Pro on here - any clues?
Call quality: Generally the call quality on the iPhone 4 has made me want to vomit blood anyway compared to the x10. Now with the Arc, I get back the clear voice I used to hear, and the noise canceling seems to work really well!
Music quality: I use the same pair of Bang & Olufsen headphones on both to compare. Honestly, both are excellent, no complaints. i expected the iPhone to do well - after all it's an iPod with a phone attached.
General feel: Yes, it definitely feels plasticky compared to the glass-and-aluminum slab of the iPhone 4. But the iPhone 4 is exactly that - a slab. It has zero considerations for ergonomics or fitting a hand well. And it's heavy. The Arc feel comfy, the smooth finish feels good, and it's soooo light!
Overall, I'm really happy to finally be back on android. The iOS was just too limiting - even jailbroken! And the Arc ticks all the right boxes for me. I'm happy to send the iPhone back to my company's IT department.
Thanks for your review, i enjoy reading reviews by members for members cause i cant have this phone on my hands when its not in retail shops.
Hopefully mine will arive before the end of this week
Could you try using rockplayer in hardware mode to see if 720p h264 mkv file is playable? I know that the stock player can playback 720p h264 high profile at 5mbps, would love to be able to do the same with .mkv files
I'll give it a try in a bit.
any particular file you want to test?

Dear Rashkae:
Go to settings>language & keyboard>you should find, among others, Smart Keypad Pro,( assuming you installed). make sure to enable it with a checkmark. Now open any messaging application and long - press any field.. such as where you wold enter the body of text... one of the options should be input method... select Smart Keyboard Pro. Done.
Hope this helps.

Regarding "glass-and-aluminum slab": Like everyone else, I love good materials, but the iPhone4 construction is stupid beyond believe.
My sister's iPhone4 shattered the first time it slipped out of her hand from maybe 2 feet. And I've read reports on the net from aluminum shelled phones (Desire HD, for instance) that got dents when there wouldn't be a mark on simple plastic.
High quality plastic is much better for a mobile device. My old full-plastic Omnia HD (heavier than the Arc) survived a lot of drops and still looks like new.
As long as it doesn't feel as cheap as the Galaxy S...

For me even faster. it's helped by the fact there's an actual camera button. No need to dig through app menus and tap on an on-screen button. Shot to shot itself seems faster than the iPhone4 too.
and picture quality is good!!

Ok, so instead of smaller buds i used nice full-sized Shure cans... and actually the X10 sounds BETTER than the iPhone 4 with these headphones. The notes are crisper, the mids and highs are more balanced with the bass. and that's not even using the EQ yet. But, I must admit the difference is veeeeeery subtle.

Wonder if the rockplayer streams in 720p through HDMI or is it only upscaled. Could you check this one for me too?

Taken with X10
Taken with iPhone 4
Notice that the one taken by iPhone has a less color range than one taken by X10. But i agree with the camera laggy start up time
But compared to iPhone 4, X10 camera have a lot of advantages, you can set the exposure compensation, face detection, smile detection, average metering, spot metering, image stabilizer, multiple autofocus. While iPhone 4 camera is just a point and shoot only.
I say X10 beats iPhone 4 in term of functional camera and video camera except for the flash . You can try taking video with iPhone 4 and taking video with X10, see which one is shaky.
so my opinion, nothing to be embarrassed about.
Constant phone reboots and 40% chance of drop call from x10.
On my Storm 1? Zip.
And storm one was HORRIBLE.
But I think I went from Worst to THE WORST.
Sad.

right. iphone 4 can capture pictures WAY better than that...
we'll be getting 720p HD videos in 2.1 too.. @24 fps (or even less). iPhone can do that at 30fps.
Sadly X10's camera isn't anything special, but that's fair enough for a phone. If the X10 had no camera and the same specs with Froyo I'd buy it anyway

I agree with you, most of high end Nokia phone is using Carl Zeiss lens and the Sony Ericsson Cybershot series beats X10 as well. But the quality is decent compared to iPhone 4, i was replying for the OP comparison of X10 and iPhone 4.
Personally, i don't get annoyed too much lack of this and lack of that with X10. I have Cybershot TX1 for casual snapshot which way better than most of pocket camera, also have DSLR for serious and art photography. PSP and Nintendo DS for playing portable games.
So i never expect too much from X10 that make me get embarrassed or disappointed, but that just me personally other people have their of own preferences.
I have never been embarassed about something my phone did/can't do... that's really silly.
I wonder if the SO-01B is really different than the X10a/i... I mean, the firmware versions are totally different now. I've never dropped a call, in-call volume is great, the camera starts up within 3-4 seconds, and Fruit Ninja works perfectly fine. (I actually used Fruit Ninja last night in an argument with my girlfriend to show how she was slicing at my heart. She laughed and we made up. Thanks, Xperia!)

Instead of using the phonebook, you can make a folder on the home screen.
1. Click folder

Isn't that how many clicks it takes for most touchscreen phones?

I also always wondering why people have a lot of restart, drop call and in-call volume problem with X10.
Ok, drop call i had, that one i make call in 30th floor office and the 3G is just 1 bar (too high, maybe signal can't reach , i changed to GPRS, then no problem).
In call volume is very different with each person, but i found a lot of occasion i pass my phone to my friend, because the caller want to talk, my friend never make any complain or ask to speak louder.
But random restart i never had, already tried with SO-01B ROM, SingTel ROM, Generic ROM, never had one.
Yesterday Ive dumped X10 and bought GalaxyS, boy what a difference, screen, wider and with much better colors and contrast, louder speaker for ringtone and for telephony, NO LAG after VooDoo lag fix. Only thins that X10 has better is the look of the white unit and maybe camera.
Can you tell me what you mean by "wider" and how it's a "good" thing? I personally feel that the X10 is already bordering on "too big", but any wider, and I probably would've never bought the phone.
I remember discussing the Atrix video quality on the forums when it was first released. One thing that immediately caught my attention was the audio quality. I'm a musician and I do believe in my ears listening to sounds. I even mentioned how the Atrix should do good recording loud concerts. All of that was few days before I got hands on my Atrix.
Yesterday, I had the fortune of seeing Kyuss Lives play in Minneapolis, I took some videos and it just amazed me how the microphone in the Atrix did not choke in that huge walls of noise.
This is the only phone I owned which could do this. I know exactly what usually happens if you try taking footage in concerts of this loudness using your cellphone.
This is a clip from the same show, recorded using an iphone:
I hope my next phone would be as capable of audio when I upgrade
Its not just the mic, The whole phone is amazing. Its hardware is just too good. Yes there is some "better" phones but compared to this one they are nothing. The build quality on this phone is outstanding, im a huge dropper so i tend to drop my phone alot and all my previous phones couldn't stand it. This one is still in one piece! This phone would be much better if we would be able to access the tegra 2 inside, just think of the possibility, they are endless.
i went to call of duty XP to see kanye west perform and i recorded most of the concert using my atrix before it ran out of batteries. the quality, both audio and video, was great. i used my friends iphone 4 for one song then i had to switch to a crappy old point and shoot camera late in the show. the iphone 4 sounds a little muffled compared to the atrix and my actual camera is just horrible.

there are a lot of factors that can influence this.
1. whenever recording, there is something called "gain". it basically controls the
amount of amplification that occurs coming off of the mic's signal. with regards to our phones, this could be controlled by the software used to record the app.
if the gain is set too high, then you would hear cracking and distortion. so really, if the iphone used recorded with a lower gain (via an app/setting whatever), that could fix the problem.
2. both clips are recorded at completely different areas of the venue. we dont know how it sounds like where the iphone user was standing...but we can make some assumptions. first off he's a lot closer to the stage = generally closer to the speakers = generally exponentially louder.
second, listen to how much bass he's picking up. that amount of bass alone could clip (cause distortion) in any of our phones if the gain isn't set correctly.
the atrix example in comparison doesnt have that much bass...
in regards to something sounding more muffled than something else, that can be controlled by a number of things, from where both mics are, to where both mics are pointed, to software settings (eq and/or noise reduction)...
Strangely nobody has mentioned that the Atrix 4G has TWO microphones.
That appears to be the reason why you can clearly hear the Atrix samples with stereo sound whereas the iPhone's sound is mono and dull.
The Atrix is such a beast!
Cheers
first off the dual microphones are primarily used for noise cancellation purposes...and secondly
the iphone4 has dual mics as well for noise cancellation purposes as well. and if the noise reduction was left on by design it would make an ambient room recording sound dull and lifeless.
again you really cant do a fair comparison until you take control of the variables. such as mic position, mic gain, sample rate, bit depth, compression, use of eq...etc

You are correct about noise cancellation, but afaik that's only on voice calls, not video recording.
In any case, I'm not just talking about quality, your theory does not explain why iPhone video samples on this thread sound flat, not stereo.

I'm a musician and do some home recording/mixing on my own. I totally dig what you're saying about high/low gain and proximity effect. I did not mean the iphone in specific when I compared the Atrix audio record quality, I meant all phones I tried before. My brother's girlfriend shot some clips right from were I stood there too using an iphone 4, the sound was muffled enough not to upload it on youtube for the fans to see (hear) and enjoy. I know I'm not just "imagining" this. The audio quality of the Atrix caught my attention even before I received mine when I was watching people's reviews and youtube samples uploads.

see?! ripping audio from those video clips can make an A/A+ quality bootleg mp3's!
Since I remember one of Atrix clips I saw back then was by someone recording a short clip of his dog named "drummer". I just used google to search for and find the clip.
Without crediting myself for having some sort of an ear for music or sounds, I think anyone would agree the audio quality is superb for a cellphone:

yup...if i fixed the exposure level the 720p vids would be even crisper looking.
There are different camps, some would stand for what it is, others stand for what they belive it to be.
In any case, I am impressed with the mic of the Atrix, and you can test this yourself.
I was at home in a hot afternoon and was standing right infront of fan at high speed, you can imagine the fluttering noise. I made a call to my friend on my Atrix and was having a little difficulty hearing him because of the fluttering from the fan, so I asked my friend if he could hear me properly. To my surprise, he mentioned that he heard me perfectly. I asked if he hears the fan's noise, he said no, and did not even noticed that there are anything moving near me. I was like huh? Impossible, but true. Try it.

on the flip side what might pass for "clear" vs "muffled" could also simply mean a large high frequency boost. which may/may not be good depending on your application. for example, there are some pretty credible rta/fft apps on the iphone...good enough to.use in the field. so really u wouldnt want a mic with a hf boost in that application (although it can/is corrected in the app)
so in any case a large hf boost would make micing things from a distance sound better....but not necessarily be good for micing things close up (sibilant shrill etc)....which is the distance most phones operate from. for example if i stuck a schoeps or dpa flat omni there it would sound muffled as heck too...but theyd be the better mics (goes without saying) and u could correct somewhat with eq. however if the bass is rolled off and nonexistant youd never be able to eq that back in. all the atrix recordings to me sound thin....whereas my other makes "decent" rehearsal takes on the ip4...close distancd though.
again it's hard to compare things without a controlled test....so many factors...aside from how things were actually recorded....theres also the issue of different phone cases, dirty clogged mics, etc..u just dont know.
i was actually going to do a transfer on the atrix mic to calibrate it for an fft app....never got around to it yet...one day ill do it so so we can all see exactly what he mic is doing and can actually compare it to an iphone mic with hard data...
Took a quick video of the piano face off at the Trans Siberian Orchestra this past weekend. Didn't realize that the Atrix had such an amazing mic on it. when I upload the video ill post a link.

Hi!
I have both the new Nexus 7 (2013) and the previous one. Noticed right away that Youtube videos looks sharper on the old Nexus 7. Have compared the same video on the two tablets.
Is it simply because of the higher resolution on the Nexus 7 2nd gen?
1280x800 on the old one vs 1920x1200 on the new one.
Edit: Uninstalling the latest Youtube update completly fixes the problem. Thank you Tranceiver!

Dude im serious. They look alot worse on the new Nexus. Lower res and with jagged edges and stuff. Is it something wrong with the tablet?
For example this YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE4gFmCiYAU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Looks nice and sharp on my old Nexus 7 but on the new one the edges are jagged, especially on the name tags.

On the real here, I find that everything looks much better on my Nexus 7. Granted if you look at crappy encoded videos it will look like dingle berries on a baboons a$$. Simple fix, stop looking at the baboons a$$.
On the other hand, you could have a bad screen. Bring your tablet to your local electronics store that has a 7 on display. Bring up the same video on both and compare.

How does my linked video look for you? Does edges look jagged. Look especially on the two player name plates in the upper middle.
Let me check real quick.
Update: Looks fine to me.

There are more pixels on the new Nexus 7, therefore lower quality videos will look lower quality than they would on the new Nexus 7 with less pixels. I can see what you're talking about and it's simply because there are many more pixels on the new Nexus 7 as opposed to the old.
This is a common issue with high-res screens and lower-res videos.
If the scaling algorithms are not advanced it looks blocky and horrible.
If you have a single pixel and it now needs to occupy 4 pixels on the high res screen, the simplest way is just to make every pixel 2x2, but then everything looks blocky and you have stair steps.
More advanced algorithms will do a better job making things look smooth.
Videos almost always look the best on a screen that matches the resolution of the video, but can be made to look decent on higher res screens if done right.

It's not just you. I think the new Youtube app screwed something up. Playing the same video in BSPlayer looks far, far better. I'll try to take some screenshots for you to compare. :good:
It's also definitely not playing in 1080p in the Youtube app.
Full sized unedited screenshots here:

What sfhub said is probably the right answer. I bet Youtube isn't doing the best filtering when it comes to upscaling resolution.
The pictures I posted above are with HD youtube setting, and 1080p BSplayer setting.
I've tried switching in BSPlayer between Software decoding, Hardware, and System. It made no difference that I can see (though I can't take screenshots in hardware mode).
I would suggest watching youtube videos in BSPlayer until they fix this crap. You can do that by
hitting the "share" button in youtube
copy URL
start BSPlayer
hit the + button (top right)
delete the "s" from the "https"
done!
Edit: The older version of Youtube has better quality. You can just go into app settings and uninstall the updates.
Thx everyone for the replys and nice explanations!
Was afraid that there were something wrong with the tablet or something. Because it dont look good at all.

Between the BSPlayer and Youtube, that doesn't look like scaling issues, it just looks like the source material is different resolutions. Is the problem that the Youtube app won't use the hires version or is it telling you it is using the hires version but still downloading the lowres version.
Now even with lower resolution video, Youtube should be able to do a better job on the scaling, which is probably a different issue.
Are you guys sure you have HD enabled? Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right while a video is playing and make sure the white HD letters have a white cloud halo behind it. It's misleading because the HD letters are in white with no cloud halo when it's disabled. With HD enabled in YouTube it looks sharp like the BSPlayer screenshot and jaggy when disabled.
I can't believe not more people notice this. On the YouTube app, the overall picture quality is sharp. It's just the jaggedness that's all over the place. HD is enabled.
I thought it was the device's scaling issues so I tried to stream 720p and 1080p videos from my computer using MX Player and the PQ was as crisp as ever. I mainly use my Nexus 7 (both 2012 and 2013) as a YouTube device and I'm rather disappointed by this...

I never got that kind of screen quality from the several Z1 units I tried (the device on the right). I see that Z2 provides the necessary improvement and this kind of display is not fitted only into special units for reviewing/ media purposes :victory:

I can only speak for my ears. I am also very into music and I think this phone is plenty good enough. In comparison to my old S3 I would say it is perhaps a little less rich in sound and not as loud. However, I am using Poweramp, and by tweaking the sound settings in the app and turning up the preamp, I am getting pretty great and loud sound out of mine. If they were using the Walkman app, I can confirm that the sound out of that was not good. Of course, I am old (haha, 45 years) and don't need to crank it up like I did when I was younger, but I am satisfied with the sound I am getting.
The battery life score seems to be highest (89) among s5 (72), m8 (71), g2(81), and note3(75).

Don't let the review put you off. I love my music and find the sound on this phone fantastic through my in-ear headphones. I never use the stock player though, is always Power Amp for me.
Compared to my previous phone, the (Note II) I find no negative difference in sound, and that audio chip was highly praised by GSM Arena.
I would compare their audio statistics the same as providing benchmark results. It may look good (or bad) on paper but it's real world performance that matters, and I am very happy with all aspects if my Z2

I feel that the audio experience can be a bit more rich. Hopefully, the Devs release a audio hack for the Z2 like they did for the Z1!
in my opinion, sound quality is brilliant, where it falls short is the volume........ thats not much of an issue for me tho as i use the nc headphones (fantastic imo, but the only nc headphones ive ever used lol) or the bluetooth speaker (btx300) i got with the phone.
I have a bug with Bluetooth headsets. I have NFC DR-BTN200 headset and whenever I use them if I get a notification audio pauses for a second and then it comes out from the phone speakers, and if that happens for few times then it starts playing music from the phone speakers instead of the headphones. and then I will have to restart the phone to get them work again. If I put the phone into vibrate mode then everything's fine
The audio is good enough for me especially with the NC headset. If I increase the volume to more than half, I will be deaf in the next 5 yrs. I don't know what gsmarena is looking for or expecting in audio output. Rest assured that the audio quality is good or the same as any mp3 players out there.
If everyone is confirming then I guess gsmarena is doing some rigorous tests out there. Perhaps we should take their reviews with a pinch of salt and let ourselves decide what's best for us

Reviews are never objective.
Best way is to go in a Sony Center and test the phone.
Compare between different phones is useless. You must choose according to your own criterias with device in hand.

Its obvious that the guys from Gsmarena are marketing the plastic fantastic S5, they've already reviewed and praised it three times in the past month ...so imo, they are not trustworthy!

Yeah that's right. Many blogs and websites are clearly on Samsung's payroll. Samsung's PR is one of the best when it comes to this stuff. I still cant believe that Heathrow is naming a terminal as S5 for a few weeks
Could U compare Mate 7 sound output on earphones to Galaxy note 2 or Xiaomi Mi4? The first one had very good sound quality but Mi4 has disappointed me in this field.

I have plugged in my headphones to many other devices and phones without an extermal headphone amp.
I can say for instance, I was quite impressed with the sound of my LG G2.
Mate 7 compared to my LG G2 is big difference...
My DT1350 headphones sounds very well without a headamp of course.. I have plans to buy a good USB DAC for my phone when I get the money
Like this one http://www.headstage.com/Arrow-5TX/....html?XTCsid=d99628f16e91ce69c9d50b1b0173b532
It is small enough to have in my backpocket in my jeans.
Further I try to avoid listening to headphones as much as possible since it will cause a big strain on your ears due added sound pressure (I have mild tinitus)
But when I am on vacation or travel to a different city and not at home it can be nice to have a good portable sound.
At Home I have an Antelope Eclipse AD/DA converter and Trident HG3 speakers.
But yes... this DTS "bull****" Mate 7 is just a marketing term just like this braindead "retina sound" for people who do not know or care much about audio..
DTS have a good effect on the Phone speakers since it adds more bottom and richness to the sound but with headphones it just adds "fake sound"
it is not a sound I would "trust" . With that said I bought this phone knowing it was not perfect, I drop my Lg G2 in the floor..I was desperate to get a new phone was and I did refuse to buy the Note 4 because of the insane price, plus I admire good screen to body ratio, a big smart phone today is NOT smartphone if there has been no focus to slim down the dead area, I want as much screen area as possible otherwise it's simply and idiotic construction, Huawei and LG are one of the few who understand screen to body ratio is important.
Blackinfinity, you only THINK your Headphones sound good with other phones, TRUST ME, i got into audio and i for instance was using these http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-...id=1428598957&sr=8-2&keywords=beyer+dt+770+80 which are 80 ohm,s like yours and i thought the headphones sounded OK, then i got a headphone amp, and it became VERY apparent that the headphones want alot more current to sound good then what comes out of your phone, seriously when i plugged em into the amp, i thought i had seriously upgraded my headphones, sounded ALOT better
I have the d880 too... They are hard to drive and react to amplification a lot more..
Dt1350 are made to sound good unamplified since that his how most people use headphones these days... However I still want a good portable headphone amp.
your headphones are 80 ohms they will improve with a amp

Audio is not as easy as you say, impedance synergy pairing and headphone / IEM play a large role in the perception you have, for me with my IEM's collection the Mate 7 sound realy good, better than my old Wolfson Note2 using Viper4Android or Boeffla kernel.
Here the audio test part on GSMARENA to compare between both:
Find 7
The Oppo Find 7 put in a stellar performance in the first part of our audio quality test. It had excellently high volume levels to go with its very clean output. Barring for the slightly high IMD reading this is one of the best score sets we've seen lately.
However, the smartphone faltered quite a bit when we plugged in a pair of headphones. Its frequency response started missing the mark now and then, the IMD rose further and the stereo crosstalk hiked quite a bit. It's not as bad as the stereo crosstalk disaster that was the 7a, but elsewhere the more premium member of the pair lagged behind its stablemate. Volume level dropped as well, adding up to what was a good, but not quite flagship-worthy performance here.
Find 7a
The Oppo Find 7a audio output is certainly among the cleanest we have seen when the smartphone is connected to an active external amplifier. Posting excellent scores top to bottom in the first part of our test, the Find 7a was also nicely loud, producing one of the best performances out there.
Plugging in a pair of headphones tells a different story, however. The stereo crosstalk increases way beyond the point where it can be considered as good, or even acceptable. The other readings remain great, but the high cross-channel leakage has the potential of damaging the whole audio experience for more exacting users and put the Oppo Find 7a below the current crop of flagships as far as audio output is concerned.
Mate 7
The Huawei Ascend Mate7 did excellently in the active external audio test, posting great scores and showing no weaknesses to its performance. The only thing to potentially frown at is its sub-par volume, but quality-wise it's right up with there with the best.
Impressively enough, plugging in a pair of headphones causes a very minor increase in stereo crosstalk - in this scenario the Ascend Mate7 ranks even better compared to the competition, which often see more degradation. Alas, the volume is below average here too, so we can't really say it's the best phablet for audio playback, but we can certainly promise you it will play every track the way its authors meant it to sound.
With my sensitive InEar SD3 I have plenty of volume, I listening beetween 3-5 most of the time, I dont want to end up deaf
