Here is the way to set Sprint Galaxy Tab to wi-fi only. This works with both rooted and unrooted tabs but rooted is way better
because of titanium backup. Batch backup everything with titanium backup. Then go to SETTINGS/PRIVACY and erase all
data. Follow all prompts and reset device. When device resets and comes to first screen about keyboard, skip this step and
when you get to Sprint and Wi-Fi : Wi-Fi only set to Wi-Fi only!!! (Very Important Step). Continue through setup of phone if
desired. If you use titanium backup, (Important Step) restore missing apps and data but NOT ANY SYSTEM DATA!!!
Reconfigure apps and good to go. Remember, Pick Wi-Fi only and NOT Wi-Fi and 3g.. Also remember if using titanium
backup to NOT RESTORE ANY SYSTEM DATA, only missing apps and data. Tested and works great.I use Mobile Hotspot
from Evo to power Galaxy Tab and $30 dollars for Hotspot unlimited on 4G AND 3G makes capped 3G on Tab useless. I
hope this helps...

GPS does not work in airplane mode, you can just shut off mobile data.
is there a way to make it so when airplane mode is turned on, and the galaxy tab is restarted, to have wifi default to automatically turn on?
i have a GT but not signed up for service, so i'm using it as a wifi tablet. but i want the cellular radio to be permanently turned off.
Thanks for the recipe...waiting for the handsfree activation to cancel at each startup was getting old.

GPS works in airplane mode on VZW tabs. I use it daily.
Turn airplane mode on then turn on the wifi, then when you turn off/on the tab then wifi will be on.

Right, the tab starts in the same state you shut it down in.
Just take the SIM out?

Tried three times, no go Sprint Tab
Thanks for the info however I have tried three times once after root w/ titanium backup and twice not rooted. After wipe and restore it boots but does not give an option for 3g/wifi only. It just boots and restores.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance

Hi,
I am using galaxy S I9000 Asia firmware I9000DXJF4. whenever i turn off the 3G(mobile internet), I am unable to turn it back on. I would then need to restart the phone to get it back on.
*i have tried re-enabling flight mode, wifi, switch setting to mms > internet back and forth but to no avail.
Appreciate ur kind assistance.
Thanks!
Similar problem also happens to WIFI. I don't know if there if a conflict between the Power control widget, switches in the notification screen, and the Setting applications. I also find myself having to softy reboot once in a while too cure the problem.
What do you use to turn off mobile internet? I use APNdroid, and it is a bug in android up to 2.1 that is the reason it doesn't turn back on.. Hopefully it's fixed in 2.2, it seems to be.
Anyways, this is a problem most people have.
edit: source; http://code.google.com/p/apndroid/issues/detail?id=33
Is it? I have used htc desire before and it does not have this issue.weird
Yes, same here. Especially with the 3G problem. I can see the 3G signal indicator, but just cannot get connected. I'm using asian firmware as well.

I have a similar problem where all of a sudden I lose my mobile internet. No warning at all. I tried to retify this.by cycling flight mode but the.only way to fix it is a reboot.
Edit: should mention ive tried all the obvious methods ie toggling apn settings and what not but no luck. Should mention it all started all darkys v7.7. Im in the process of downloading 7.8 now so they may fix the.issue

I don't have an unlimited data plan so I normally turn my 3G on and off manually when I need to. But today my 3G icon keeps coming up on the tab even when i have the settings as off. I checked my data usage from my carrier and it is indeed eating up data. I've tried restarting the phone but it's still the same.
Any idea of why this is happening and how to resolve this?
Thanks in Advance

try APNdroid, you can find it in the Market.

If you have your data disabled then it shouldn't be coming on. Check your permissions to see if you have an app on your phone that has permission to mess with your network settings.

APNDroid would work for your situation very well, however, I've had problems sending MMS's when I've had APNDroid installed (even with "enable MMS" checked).
Another option that would probably work very well is DroidWall (on the market-free). It's a firewall for your mobile data and WiFi, customizable for each allowing individual programs through. A widget on your homescreen turns it on or off. You could have it set so programs can always use WiFi, yet mobile data is blocked unless you turn the widget to "off". That wy no programs can actually transmit anything even if they have permissions set in the program. DroidWall has final say of what leaves.
I downloaded 3GWatchdog free, and was so impressed I purchased the Pro version for ~$2.50. The Pro version allows you to see specifically what program has used mobile data, and how much. That, along with DroidWall, will allow me to completely customize and control my mobile data while still retaining as much functionality as possible.
Ok Well I downloaded both APNDroid and Watchdog and now I can't even turn on 3G. I just uninstalled both of them and turn my phone off and on still no 3G.
Thanks anyway guys. I getting really close to giving up on Android and moving to the iphone. Every other day there's a new problem with this mobile OS and I always have to download an app rectify something that shouldn't be happening in the first place. It's getting ridiculous.

Did you turn your mobile data back on before uninstalling APNdroid? If not, you might want to look into that
No offense, but I dont think its Android that is the problem. Have you taken the time to fully understand the phone? I havent had a hitch since I got this phone. Once you reinstall APNdroid, enable your data, and then remove the app. If you would like to manually turn off your mobile data then do this menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>uncheck data enabled
If you dont want to go through the hassle of that, download an app to do it for you. Quick settings can do it. Open quick settings>menu>preference>statusbar shortcut *To access quick settings from status bar* Then hit back>menu>customize>move up mobile data(APN) from hidden settings. Then all you have to do is click on or off for mobile data.
You can also download various widgets that can do this for you without having to go into quick settings. APNdroid being one of them. I use Widgetsoid.
So I have a no contract Sprint Galaxy Tab that I bought from Best Buy. When they activate it oyu are stuck signing up for the data plan at $29.99/month. I have had the phone for several months and I am tired of paying money for 3g when I am WiFi almost all the time and when I need 3g I cna always tether to my phone (I have tried this several times and it works great even after the 2.2 upgrade).
So I went on the Sprint site and tried to cancel. They said I had to do a live chat. So I did and the rep said the only way they would stop the plan is if they got rid of my phone # for the tab (why the tab needs a phone # even though it cannot make calls on teh Sprint network is beyond me).
So my question to you experts out there is can I drop the plan and lose the phone# and still have all the functionality I need to connect to the web via WiFi and get to all my Google apps and Market?
Yes. The wifi and the phone service are separate. I use my Tab as wifi only with no issue and tether to my phone when out and about also.
To second that my gsm one even works without a sim

GPS without Data Plan?
I have had 2 Galaxy Tabs (Verizon and now Sprint) and neither one worked well for GPS until I turned off airplane mode (which then showed that I was getting data somehow as I got 3-4 bars in the notification area. And when, airplane mode is turned off, the GPS gets a fix right away whereas when I don't turn airplane mode off, I cannot get a fix at all. I am, BTW, using Copilot Live USA.
Can anyone explain the interaction between the GPS and data mode - it's baffling me?
well if you hold down the power button, you have an option to deactivate 3g data.
i have a sprint tab, WiFi use only. I deactivated the 3g and froze those sprint apps using titanium backup so i dont get a "activate device" message all the time, and GPS works pretty good teathering with my iPhone. using the google navigation.

I recently purchased a used Droid x for the strict purpose of using as a dash cam for my car. I don't have Verizon and I skipped activation. I need GPS access all the time and wifi access intermittently but I have no use for the cellular radio. Airplane mode is of no help since it disables GPS. I want to get maximum battery life, how do I go about permanently disabling wlan since I'm using this device as a computer and not as a phone. I am running stock 2.3.5 rooted.
Methods tried:
*#*#INFO#*#* (Worked, temporary)
Network by Philipp Mangelow (Worked, temporary)
WiFi Only Script (Does not work at all)
Since I'm running CM7, the path to "enable data" will be different.
But, menu\settings and then look for "enable data" or something to that effect and uncheck it.
Let me know how it goes.
Sorry, menu/settings then network or data then uncheck "enable data".
Yes but will disabling data really stop the phone from trying to connect to the best tower? If a verizon tower can't be located will the phone burn battery life while roaming? When I think data I think 3g. I'm pretty sure it still connects for voice.

Yes, data is the 3G data. I keep my data turned off and my Droid X lasts 24 hrs. It will be less with GPS on, of course.
What your trying to do is the correct thing.

Disabling data certainly gives a battery boost but at the end of the day I am still connecting to the cellular towers. With data disabled I see the signal going up and down. I tried a script that I found but it doesn't work for the droid x. I've tried freezing Dialer and Phone 2.3.5 using titanium backup but that doesn't disable the radio either. I downloaded a program called Network (by Philipp Mangelow) and it lets me successfully turn off the radio (it simply is a shortcut to dialing *#*#INFO#*#*), however this method is only temporary and the radio comes back everytime I reboot so I'd like a permanent way to disable it. Airplane mode does it but it also disables wifi and gps so its of no use. Any other ideas guys?

I use grameenphone network in Bangladesh and recently bought oneplus 5. i found that my device easily gets connected to wifi. but when i turned off wifi (after using for several hours) and switched to mobile data, the mobile data wan't working. the sim had full signal, i could even call and send sms, and the mobile data APN was also correct. then i reboot the phone and mobile data started working. the next day, i used wifi for several hours, switched off wifi, and then tried to turn on mobile data.....same problem happened. i had to reboot the phone again to get mobile data connection.

try to update to 4.5.10 first. maybe it solves your problem.
I find the problem strange though
You can do one thing. Turn airplane mode on and then off. Wait for 10 secs.

I have the same issue on my Oneplus 5. Connect to WiFi at home. When I leave, and it disconnects, no mobile data until I reboot. I have tried to turn on airplane mode and off again, does not help. I am on T-Mobile USA. I had the same issue on my Nexus 6P. I fixed it there by changing the APN to turn off IPv6. But with the Oneplus 5 the APN are greyed out. I can't change them. I did add a new APN with T-Mobile's settings, minus IPv6, but that did not work. I am on 4.5.10. The area I am in has strong LTE band 4 and 12 signal.
How would I enable editing of APN's? I do have Magisk root.

Well, I figured this out. I was blocking the kernel with AFWall+. Allow it through and no more issues. Seems to be the issue. May not be the same for everyone.
Try dialing *#*#344636#*#* absolutely worked for me !
