Is there any info about OTA on Bell Atrix? - Atrix 4G General

Is there anyone knows when the bell verizon getting the new ota update?
Or
Can I use the att OTA update file to update my bell atrix ?

No news yet ... very disappointing given that the bootloader is locked and as it's Bell we're likely to be constantly left behind by updates. Don't think I'm going to keep my Atrix much past the time when I can get an Galaxy S II.

I actually don't want the update yet. Because we don't have an .sbf file that means we can't have root at the new update.

I was twice the victim of the Internal SD failure. Both times Bell tried blaming Samsung, and Samsung tried blaming Bell when the issue was well known...

Mine died, got it repaired, running perfectly since...hardware defects happen it went about as well as it could have at least in my case.
We'll know very soon after SGS2 release whether GPS works. Myself I expect they won't make that mistake again, but perhaps some other mistakes as phones are never perfect....
Have fun waiting for Bell updates with locked bootloader...

im scared of no updates as well. Not sure what to do. Love the phone overall but if the phone is gonna be behind in the updates i might trade it for the desire hd/inspire. I wont however, trust any samsung product.

Its clearly a bit of a worry when you read that someone on the Motorola Owners Forum approached Bell, and asked about the .57 update AT&T got. The response he got was "what update??"
I'm going to be watching what happens over the next month. If AT&T continues to get updates, and the 2.3 update hits AT&T with no indication its coming to Bell, then I'm going to switch to an AT&T handset..
Looks like there is no chance the Atrix is going to be released by the big three carriers here in Australia any time soon either...
I'm finally finding out what a POS Motorola and Bell is using this phone.... I should have picked up the AT&T handset instead of the Bell one for sure

You never know GPS from what I heard blows on the Nexus S, plus Samsung never put the Notification LED on the Nexus S either after that too was missing from the original Galaxy S...

Like I said we'll know after release. Nexus S is most of the same hardware as the SGS, disappointing that they didn't fix it but who knows how 'deep' the problem was or what the timeframe was (they only released some 6 months apart).
One of the best mods for the SGS is BLN (backlight notification), basically lights up the soft-key backlights as a notification light.
If Samsung was really smart they'd pull that feature in to their stock setups, but really it will just be implemented by SGS2 XDA devs again.

A software update is now available for the Bell version of the Motorola Atrix!
- To download the update manually:
Go to: Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Update
- I'm not sure what the size of the update file is, but I would suggest downloading it over WiFi as opposed to the Bell network so you don't exceed your data allowance and incur extra charges.
- Ensure that your phone is at least 50% charged before attempting the update. Idealy, charge it beyond 50% to be safe.
-- The updated version is v37.23 and brings Android Froyo up to version 2.2.2, and contains numerous updates:
Upload Data Speed
Increased upload speed at which data can travel on the network.
Data and Voice Connection
Improvements to prevent interruptions to data and voice connection.
Screen
Improvements to prevent screen from freezing.
Skype
Improvements to call audio function so it is easier for the person you called to hear you. Please note this application is not pre-loaded on phone, but is available for download from Android Market.
Wi-Fi
Increased functionality by enabling Yahoo Email to be sent over a Wi-Fi connection.
Display
Improved International Roaming Warning Message by simplifying user notification so that it only appears on the screen when you move to a new network.
Happening Widget
Improved Happenings Widget to ensure that you receive the latest updates across the social networks you are connected to such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter.
Calling
Improvements were made to incoming and outgoing call functionality to ensure a more seamless experience
Expanded Language Support for Webtop
Accented character support within Webtop application.
Improved Support for POP/SMTP Email
Support for SMTP outgoing servers that do not require authentication
Improved Exchange Performance
Improved Exchange Email/Calendar/Contacts performance

Any clue on when we will see 2.2 on the epic????

Been looking around on line and haven't seen anything confirming when we will get our update. Anyone got any good speculation.

The international version of the phone is supposed to have it by the end of September. This is in no way an indication as to when the other phones will. It would make sense that they would give it to the international version first, then roll it out at the same time for all of the US variants (vibrant, captivate, fascinate, Epic).
I'm certain Sprint users would be in an uproar of AT&T got it first.... and the same goes for other carriers.
International version is getting it 23rd
http://androidspin.com/2010/09/13/rumor-samsung-galaxy-s-to-get-froyo-around-23rd-september/
Don't know about US versions but Epic might take a bit longer because they still gotta make TW3 work..
Didn't sprint say that the Epic was for sure getting it this month? I thought I remember reading that somewhere?
Epicly sent from my Sammy Epic using XDA App
As much as my Epic is my precious baby, if Samsung does NOT have Froyo + bug fixes out by the end of this month, I will be returning my phone for a EVO.
Samsung STILL hasn't put out bug fixes for the Captivate or Vibrant, and I'm losing the small amount of faith i had in samsung.

an epic user actually admits that samsung didn't fix captivate and vibrant. Someone was in the evo subforum saying that there were no problems with captivate or vibrant.
Also tbh, i wouldn't get my hopes up for the OFFICIAL release from samsung on froyo, but most likely someone will port another galaxy S update to the epic. So sort of like a custom rom with froyo running it.
Was told early to mid October today.

October isn't cutting it for me...
We only have Samsung's word when it comes to updates that they will push. After Samsung publicly promised that Froyo would be out by September, now you say mid-October?
Of course the updates will roll out once everyone's 30 day return period is up.
Samsung didn't even *promise* for other bug fixes that the Galaxy phones have! I mean come on, have you seen the list of official problems with the Fascinate? How long do you think those problems will take to be fixed (if ever?)
I'm being a pessimist, but I would LOVE for Sammy to prove me wrong.
I have not heard anything about the Epic getting the update but I know Verizon is planning as of right now for an October 2.2 update.
I will bet now that clockwork is slowly getting ported over that a custom 2.2 rom is not very far away for the rooted memebers
Definitely like the Epic more than Evo so not even considering moving anywhere. Who doesn't like improvements to their gadget..
Despite all the haba-haba concerning the gps, mine works fine with gmaps and copilot, no back button issue and so forth. Now if I could just find the battery drain culprit I'll be even more satisfied. As I'm typing I can watch my battery drop from 74 to 72. The battery meter/gauge needs some calibrating I think and some power management would be welcome.
Hmm, what else..guess I'll be on ebay later today for some cheap xl batteries and such. But seriously, this phone blows me away..so good and responsive. Love it.

Being an Epic user why are you even worried about the Fascinate? Especially since most of its problems are due to the Verizon customizations and a lack of QA by Verizon.

samsung is the one that issues the updates, not verizon. Since fascinate is a galaxy S phone, just like the epic, with common/similar problems, it might have the same treatment as the fascinate had (which means 1-2 updates, and then nothing).
People keep saying that galaxy s phone is where samsung "turns" their rep around, but i have yet to see any of the galaxy s phones being supported. Hence why i said there might not be a 2.2 update, but will most likely be a 2.2 rom modded for the epic.
Samsung hasn't even activated their MediaHub which, theoretically, will bring in a lot of revenue. I'm sure that is a higher priority for them than 2.2. I wouldn't expect our updates before they get that out the door. But then I'll start worrying.
Having a Nexus One And HD2 with android 2.2 i gotta say im disappointed by this phone. Not because of the hardware, Its great. I love throwing video files on it and watching them on the wonderful screen, i love the keyboard, pretty much no hardware complaints. But I been spoiled by android 2.2 and its enhancements.
I didnt think it would be a big deal when i got the phone, but i constantly find myself going back to my other phones for web browsing (sprint 3G is a JOKE!) and using my epic for video playing. I only had the phone a couple days and im gonna give it a better shot, but hopefully we see 2.2 by the beginning of october. If not i will sadly return the phone and pony up for a G2 or My touch HD.

What enhancements? The UI is the same as 2.1. It's not going to change that much. Sure, the benchmarks will be much higher because of JIT, but performance isn't going to increase that much. I'm not sure what you mean by being "spoiled". Do you mean the apps2sd card feature that only about 1 in 20 apps have?

You also get the v8 engine in the browser which makes it much faster at rendering photos.
Btw, sprint's 3g I find to be much better than t-mobiles since you could walk 5 feet and be stuck on edge with them. Happens to my sister with n1 all the time. We are in an area that is 3g for the other 3 carriers but only edge for tmo.

Lol, no its more than that. Like I said I love the phone. But I miss things like flash 10. The new gmail and Google search. Other things I cant put my hands on at this moment.
Like I said, I didn't think it would be a big deal when I got the phone and its really not as I replaced Google search with vlingo and use skyfire for video (when I can get decent speeds on sprints so called 3G or 4G.)
Funny, as I type this I realized the problem I have is not so much 2.1 vs 2.2 (although 2.2 is just better) but more with sprints network. On 3g I only get an avg of .5kbs and on 4G I get around 2 saw as high as 5mbs. I avg atleast 4mbs on T-Mobile.
It makes a world of difference when browsing or checking out a quick video.

Total opposite for me. I have 3g everywhere I go on T-Mobile. Maybe if I go 30miles outside the city to the country it would be like that. But I don't go outside major cities to often

Samsung Galaxy S - Australian Froyo

Hi All,
I thought I would just share my encounter with Samsung Customer Centre in Sydney.
I spoke with a rep this morning, below is my lose recollection of the conversation:
Me: "Hi, I was wondering when the Samsung Galaxy S will be upgraded to Froyo"
Samsung Rep: “It should be soon, but we really don’t know”
Me: “Well the websphere has been showing that the upgrade was meant to be end of August, then end of September and now sometime in October, so there’s still no news”
Samsung Rep: “No, what they are doing is working with the carriers to test the firmware, if there are any bugs the carriers are sending it back to Samsung US to fix, then Samsung US will send it back to the Australia carriers to retest. It can take some time”
Me: “So you’re saying that Froyo is in it’s testing cycles”
Samsung Rep: “Yeah”
So what we can see here is that release could be imminent as they are now going through User Acceptance Testing. This leads me to believe that whatever Froyo Firmwares are floating around out there, are likely to be as close to final as they will ever be.
For all the people out there who have installed the current Froyo builds who are expecting to see more, I don’t think that’s going to happen, but if some of the issues on the phones feel like bugs there is still hope to get them fixed.
I suspect Samsung will get out Froyo soon and once the angry mobs are abated, will then use their pressure free time to really optimise it.
Cheers,
Irwin Proud
I seriously hope that is not true, if what is floating around are the "final" ones, then we are in a deep crap load of doo doo here.
so many devices dead due IMEI damage, and many more dead due Internal SD overkill, and all the bugs people have reported... the future suddently just looks darker
I think the IMEI problem is a bug, so I'm sure it's being worked on. I actually think it could be a hardware problem, as I had to have my mainboard replaced after an Odin flash that caused the IMEI number to corrupt. I got a call from the Samsung repairer a couple of weeks ago and he was saying it was happening to more phones.
I think it'll work well (not great), it just won't be the powerful beast that it should be. Samsung may not have had the best judgement when they decided to make 8 phones with the same architecture, but slightly different specs. It means that they have to split their resources across the different phones just to do the one Android 2.2 update for them.
I agree with the canook there p), It seems that Samsung is using us XDA ppl to be unpaid guinie pigs. NOT HAPPY JAN!

From what I've been reading, apparently it is, it's just not optimised for hummingbird.
So in other words, blame the carriers. Something I've done for years. Greedy b all of them. Can just hope the mobile market approaches the "freedom" seen for the net and not the other way around.
my insider also told me the same thing back in 1 month ago..
and last week he still insisted it is currently under carrier testing and most probably will be done by next week...
so far all the soruces i got from him was true and accurate(like the date SGS released by optus and vodafone, galaxy tab details, etc)
Why is everyone lusting so much for the Froyo? Unless its the people that are experiencing the gps issue and lag. My SGS is perfect so far, none of the problems stated above, so for me when the update comes its welcome but until then am i missing anything much really?

My main issue is that Samsung releases a full GPS fix in Froyo, so I can use the phone as advertised. I can live with a little lagg now and again.
I just hope they sort it, or my phone is going back!

In regards to the GPS problem, whenever I was on google maps before, it would never give me my location and then after I updated the google maps app it found the locations perfectly.
But CoPilot Live has always worked well on my SGS.

For me the speed of the phone is good enough, I only install a dozen extra apps and they work fine enough.
The color is fine in my phone running Froyo JPK. Wifi, 3G, FM radio, video playback, work fine.
The GPS keeps being a Guessing Positioning System. It smoothes the path for 15 seconds or so, and when you turn 90º, it keeps showing that you're traveling along the previous street for several seconds. Then it starts moving the position to the new street, doing a curve... But this takes so much time that you may be on the next intersection before the dot is in the correct street. Then if you turn 90º again, the dot overshots the corner, continues along the second street, does a smooth curve heading slowly to the 3rd street...

That's exactly why I am eager for Froyo to be released for the SGS. My phone isn't as stable as others' handsets, the lag is a pain in the arse and there are features such as JIT, that will make my SGS experience much more pleasant, and Chrome to Phone, that will make more productive use of my time.

The only lag i have experienced is when adding app shortcuts. Which is not deal breaker for me at all.
And why would someone buy basically "hyper-phone" for calls only? Think about it little bit before making a statement like that.
And speaking about the standards, what that has to do with anything?
GPS works just as it did on my iPhone with Copilot.

Well thats bloody great! grrrrr.. Thats the only thing I wanted out of Froyo. Looks like i'll be staying on Eclair til maybe sometime next year when they sort out the optimizing. Man I'm lusting at the Desires as their JIT works and it more then doubled the Quadrant scores (yeh yeh i know Quadrant is a **** benchmarker)
Thank god for Cyengenmod team as I think they will do a proper release once Froyo source is out.
Since getting my phone back from the Samsung repairer after the IMEI corrupted, i've been reluctant to flash these beta roms using Odin.
So I'm more than happy waiting till it's official. I came from the Nexus One with Froyo, I went for the Galaxy because of it's superior specs, especially 4" screen and 2GB Nand.
I've also really appreciated some of the improvements that TouchWiz has brought to the experience.
But Froyo on the Nexus One was a game changer, it completely opened up the phone and made it fly. I would rather wait for Samsung to get JIT optimised, clean up their system and smoothen the entire interface before releasing Froyo. It's more their lack of engagement with their customers that's the problem.
Has anyone used Fennec, with their nightlies? That's the way to engage your community and get buy in for the wait.
Development cycles are not perfect and when you fix one bug a new one opens up, all I say is let us know its getting there.

I have had my phone for over two months and can honestly say that I have never experienced a lag of more than 2secs when opening any app on my phone.
Whilst I am looking forward to FroYo, I will definately be waiting until I have heard a few reactions from more experienced users before rushing to download.

10 seconds to launch an app? Never had that. Not sure on which firmware is that but my JM2 bog standard have never needed so much to open a app.
Copilot opens up for me in around 4 seconds. And thats after the reboot before killing all the apps that are running in the background.

Samsung Pulls Android 2.2 Update for Vibrant

Just read this on phandroid.com.
Samsung is no longer offering the Froyo update to via Kies (this was only available to Bell customers anyway?)
According to Samsung's facebook page:
"We are continuing to investigate issues that some users have reported while completing the upgrade to Android 2.2. In the interim, we are taking the extra precaution of temporarily suspending the upgrade as a download from Kies. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that clients contact 1-800-751-4078 or [email protected] if they have any further questions."
I think this news means a few things:
1. Since the release in Canada was going to precede the US release, we have a while to wait before any hopes of an official Froyo release for the vibrant.
2. Since Samsung pulled the plug in Canada, it is a safe conclusion that Samsung is responsible for the delay we are experiencing in the USA, not T-Mobile.
3. We should petition T-Mobile to take matters into their own hands because Samsung has failed us. As T-Mobile customers, we deserve to get what we were sold. When we bought our Vibrants, we were sold a smartphone that was capable of being officially updated to Froyo, and within at least a "reasonable" time-frame.
4. In the petition, we should suggest that T-Mobile release a vanilla Froyo or Gingerbread update for our Vibrants, which their engineers could pull-off by adapting the Nexus S rom.
I am setting up the online petition right now. Any suggestions as to details I should include in the petition? I'll post a link when it is ready.
Lol, you're wasting your time.
Sent from my SGS Vibrant.
Samsung software support is losing right now. HTC and Motorola manage to successfully roll out updates across multiple carriers. Samsung can't even manage 1.
This really makes me consider getting a Nexus S.

Nop...I just knew that even if samsung didn't release I could install it my self which I did!
Well, if there are issues, isn't it good that they're addressing them before wide release? (Better late and grate than early and buggy, right?)
(btw - the rest of yer wish list - "TMO engineers," etc. - is a pipe dream - you're better off asking Santa! )
I don't know we have 2.2 already!?
Isnt it only the Canada versions?
Who really cares anymore? They promised an update months ago. Then kept re promising. Now ginger bread is out and the nexus s. I wouldn't hold my breath.
I assume since your on XDA that your not running stock rom anyways so lets go back to supporting our favorite devs.
Only thing I cant figure out is I with over 4 million galaxys sold why arent there more devs? Not to take away from the great work of the devs on here but it seems like there should be more.

This is just for the Bell version of the Vibrant....?
I have a friend that works for TMo, and she said they got an email saying that the Vibrant was not getting an UPDATE at all. I'll try to get the email...

My 80yr old grandma said the same thing. Weird...
Thank GOD for developers and custom ROMS, 2.2 been there done that, whats next lol?
Rumor Control:
This is in regards to the Canada Bell Vibrant after reports of bricking and data loss
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-canada-pulling-froyo-update
Its good to get your news from multiple sources.
Though I would be curious to know the build number of their 2.2 update, I wouldn't be surprised if it was different from ours, as I'm sure the model number of the Tmo Vibrant is different from theirs, as well as other regional carriers. Remember Kies does things based off of the model number.
unfortunately, your cries fall upon deaf ears..
yeah, samsung software support sucks. the intercept or whatever the crap it is on sprint just got 2.2.
oh well, just do it yourself. it's so easy, and the custom roms are 10x better anyway
but i understand the frustration
Support your own phone then lol. Screw samsung. Let it be your last samsung but don't just let it be broken, fix it. There's ROMS out there that work, and work well. Foyo has been out for the vibrant for what almost 2 months now?
I'm as mad about Samsung's service as the next person but we obviously aren't getting anywhere harrassing them on facebook/twitter or calling support. Like Jae said, it falls on def ears.
SamSUCK
I really can't believe this. This is ****ing ridiculous! I'm mad for you guys. So glad I exchanged my Vibrant for a MyTouch 4G. I can't believe Google would contract a company like SamSUCK to make a dev phone for them. Why couldn't they stick with HTC. They make good solid hardware, they actually support the devices they make.
I fell in love with the Vibrant at first (due to the screen of course) but I just couldn't take the GPS problems, the lag, retarded file system, lack of Froyo, TouchWiz, no front facing camera, no flash, no LED indicator lights, cheap plastic build. I should have known better but I absoutely loved that screen and even my iPhone 4 friends were impressed.
I just couldn't take it anymore. My friend introduced me to this forum, installed ROMs for me which were bug filled, MMS didnt work right on some of them, the pics came in blurry, the GPS was still not good, etc. It was hard for me to do but I took a deep breath and said, F*CK YOU SAMSUCK! Seeing a friends unrooted MT4G getting 1900+ on Quadrant was the last straw. I really tried so hard to like my phone but it was time to give up on SamSUCK. They just don't support their hardware. If you want an Android device, stick with HTC or a phone that runs simply stock. Lesson learned. Samsuck always falls short. Look at the Nexus S. No microSD, no HD recording, no HSPA+. Is this what Google calls revolutionary?? What are you ****ing kidding me?? Typical SamSUCK. HTC would have never done some **** like that. FAIL

AT&T Rumor, Focus Update Monday???

Hey my friends. There is chatter that AT&T is rolling out both the Pre Update & the NoDo Update this Monday. Fact or fiction???
Fiction
I'm so disappionted with this whole situation. I hope I'm wrong but you have to look at the obvious. First update on Feb.21, no one got. Then MS said they pulled it for Samsung issues, but then they said they didn't pull it. Day later, MS says they pulled it for Samsung. Cool, no other ATT phone got the update! People asked if ATT was blocking the update, MS said no of course not. Meanwhile, MS issues a statement how 90% of phones got the update. Taking a look on the message boards, shows no one on a US carrier got an update. Since the US makes up about 60% of their phones sales, something is up. Fast forward a week, we have more denials of the update being blocked. Now yesterday, like a kid caught in the cookie jar, we hear that ATT did block it but we really get it this time. Really? Really indeed. Considering this is probably the only update we will ever get, this is disappointing.
I think both are true. When MS got reports of problems they stopped the updates. Now that Omnia 7 & Focus owners outside the US are reporting getting the update I think it's all AT&T causing the delay. I got the original update the first day it was out on Rogers.

Agreed all around. I gave up on WM years ago because of the appalling update "cycle" imposed on users by Microsoft and carriers. IF you got an update for your expensive device at all, it usually caused more problems than it solved and was so loaded down by carrier garbage that, more often than not, I'd end up either using a custom system or rolling back to the original. I bought a Focus SOLELY because Microsoft claimed this time would be different. This time updates would be timely and relevant and carriers wouldn't be able to block them simply because they want to sell you another phone and blah blah blah. Well you can sure throw the "timely" bit out the window. According to Microsoft's timetable, the first real feature update will be released Q3 of 2011. That means the carriers will get it Q3 of 2011, not you and I, and that's so far away that it really means that Microsoft has no idea when it'll be ready. It also means that my Focus will be at least a year old by the time the first feature update arrives. I would bet a paycheck that it won't be eligable for the update, too. Why?
Because Microsoft and the carriers have done this before, several times, and it looks like they have every intention of doing it again.
I bought the Focus the day they went on sale. It had a sim card in it for two weeks before I couldn't take it's overwhelming lack of features and stuck it in another phone. I haven't even turned it on in almost a month. Given the constant backpedalling and outright bull**** being put out by Microsoft lately, I think monday is when I finally cut my losses, throw the thing in the trash and be done with it. Enough is enough. I will never again buy a Microsoft mobile device.

Thanks, I needed that, it made me smile and I haven't smiled much through this entire fiasco. Am I frustrated, sure. I have a battery icon that flashes and beeps every second and won't allow the screen to shut down. ATT tells me it will be fixed in the update. So I wait and probably have more reason than most to want the update. But, if ATT held this up because of the problems experienced by their Focus owners, then Thank you ATT.

I have developed and launched Customer Service for bleeding edge products and services for almost 40 years. I know what to expect and do my homework. I like this phone and OS and will put up with a lot of things to get where it could go. But, in my mind, MS needs to step it up a bit and more importantly, take the influence of the carriers out of the update process and deal with us directly as customers.

I think that is easier said than done. AT&T has the cards and the leverage over the OEM and OS. Unless you're Steve Jobs/Apple. Then you've got the leverage over AT&T.
Honestly, I would gladly pay $500 for an unbranded Samsung Focus so I won't be at AT&T's mercy. Unfortunately, AT&T probably forced Samsung to give them a year-long exclusitivity agreement for the U.S.
You wouldn't believe the BS requirements that AT&T has for some of these phones...
Me, personally, I'm in no dire need for the update so I'm not at all concerned about when it gets released as much as I am knowing that there will be one. It would certainly tick me off if AT&T blocks future updates and would definitely encourage me to go back to unbranded phones.

I did my troubleshooting thing with Samsung, then went to the warranty support group at ATT where they confirmed it was a known MS issue, they were addressing it in the next update, many Focus owners have it. I agreed to wait, see if the update fixes it, if not, return it under warranty.
BTW, there is a video on YouTube of someone with exactly the same symptoms, but his Focus ended up with a melted mini uSB cable connector and a melted mini USB port. The images are startling and the symptoms leading up to the meltdown were exactly like mine.

LOL, so true so true, maybe I am just lucky, my phone actually works, I only 24gig of ram and not the 40 I want but hey, its a start. My only real complaint is not being able to connect to hidden networks and PCAny has not release a app for it yet.
On the update side, if it gets real bad, we can go old school, go back to flashing devices. I don't care what OS you have, there will be issues and slow and in some cases no turn around for fixes.
There are plenty of issues with the Samsung Focus and WP7 in general, ranging from charing the battery, the battery icon flashing after removing the MicroUSB cable, audio problems with the headset and Bluetooth, SSSLLLLOOOOWWWW performance after exiting an app, etc. just to name a few.
I am trying to keep an open mind about this whole update process. While MS hasn't come out saying that carriers have or have not blocked any update, there are plenty of controdictions being made from MS sources. Some have said that the NoDo update has been done since Dec, yet WP7 needed a "minor update to make sure future updates go more smoothly" and that 90% of phones have recieved the update. Well, I have 3 Samsung Focus phones, none of which has recieved any update thus far. THere are plenty who have said that no one on AT&T has recieved the update, yet Rogers, Orange, etc. users have recieved the update. Carriers are blocking the update in some fashion, and this is what I was affraid of when MS announced this policy. Hell, doesn't anyone remember when Microsoft said that any carrier included software must be NON-Trial, Free, must be run without Internet connectivity, yet none of that is true with AT&T phones???
I want this platform to succeed, yet the first two updates thus far have recieved SSOO much attention, and under such a microscope that MS cannot move at the speed they want to without losing customers. Yeah, you can make all of the comments about how Apple and Google went through the same things, MS needed to learn from their mistakes and how to not make them. It seems that MS is no History Major.

Why worry about this when you see things progressing? You're wasting your time, watch development and you will be happier than you would be with stock froyo anyway.
I see things progressing because off our devs, not because of verizon or samsung. I'm tired of big business getting away with anything they want. I get your point, but I'm still trying to get answers.

Quite frankly, no one will care about a Facebook page. Even if everyone on XDA with a Fascinate liked it, it still wouldn't be anywhere near an impressive number.
And Verizon/Samsung haven't really 'lied' to us (not counting their lower level reps, but no one should be trusting them anyways), they've never officially promised any sort of release date AFAIK... meaning long as they eventually release it, they'll have kept their promise (things like 'soon' are totally subjective, which is why they say them).
Verizon/Samsung have, simply put, just given us terrible support. We're low priority for them- we're basically an offbrand (i.e. not a Droid) phone, with a relatively small userbase. We're small fish in a big sea. Taken on top of Verizon & Samsungs already poor support, it really shouldn't be a surprise to us that we're still waiting for Froyo (unfortunately that's a lot easier to realize in retrospect... if I'd realized it back then, I'd have likely gone with the Incredible).
It is so sad that we are considered "not a droid". The one thing that attracted me to my Fascinate was the nice hardware, sweet screen, and the Android OS. I don't know what I would do without the devs around here. It's a shame that we have been swept under the rug by Samsung and VZW.

Agreed, but if we never take any action, the corportations will continue as usual and we will get even less actions. Corporations already run this country. Its not we the people anymore, its whatever corporate america buys in our congress.

Just vote with your wallet and don't buy samsung phones anymore.
Also, always make it a habite to tell anyone shopping for a phone about how bad samsung is and why they shouldn't buy a samsung phone.

I will NEVER buy another samsung phone, Eff the Galaxy S2. It's too bad, the fascinate has some great qualities, but I refuse to give money to someone who doesn't care. I was burnt once, not gonna get me again. I'm debating if I leave Verizon, quite honestly.
I completely agree with you about voting with your wallet!
I will always argue that you should make your decisions based on the hardware. Not the software, not the manufacturer, not the carrier. Hardware will always win out, and Samsung makes great hardware.

I used to say the same thing, based upon past experience with numerous WinMo phones.
I no longer agree. Not in the least. I had a Samsung WinMo, but my last two WinMo phones were HTC. Compared to this Samsung.....
a) The Samsung pulls 300ma max from the PC USB port. That is fine. It only pulls 650ma max from a 5 volt adapter. The phone can consume well over 650ma to operate as a car GPS (screen bright, downloading map data, etc). So, the battery can rather quickly die even plugged into a high rate charger in the car. I have never seen an HTC phone do that. If the operating current goes up, the HTC pulls more current from the charger. Usually up to about 1 amp. So if it is plugged into a high rate charger, the HTC phones will never drain the battery even in the worst conditions. Charge rate FAIL.
b) In total darkness, it is too bright. In bright sun, it is too dim. You can go to manual mode, and adjust to a good level, but that misses the point of having the AUTO sensor... Auto brightness adjust FAIL.
c) On my phone, when used for a long while on charge at high brightness (car again), the four bottom buttons appear to be pressed randomly. The phone becomes a worthless brick. According to Verizon, this is fairly normal for the generated heat and there isn't anything I can do but not use it when it is charging. FAIL button sensor sensitivity. (though I believe this is just my phone being defective, and I can't get it fixed)
d) Charge plug. Who designed that piece of garbage. Pretty much every plug I have, and I have a lot of them, had to be cut up in the front side to allow it to fully seat in the Samsung jack. FAIL plug placement.
e) No notification LED. What??? FAIL.
f) Minor items like the mediocre loudspeaker placement, no camera button, and slippery back cover add up to another FAIL IMHO.
I used to think highly of Samsung devices from my past experience. This device has tarnished that image. I would only recommend this phone to someone because I thought they might want to buy this one that I have.
So, I sent an email to verizon, and this is what I got....
Good afternoon Mr. ****,
Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. My name is Nicholas and resolving your issue is my top priority. I sincerely apologize that you are dissatisfied with the new froyo software update not being available for the Samsung Fascinate. I can recognize the importance in having the newest, most sophisticated software when purchasing new equipment. Despite all, I'm eager to assist with all of your concerns today.
Mr. *****, I can understand your urgency in regards to this matter. However, before new software is released, it must be approved by the manufacturer ( Samsung ) and Verizon Wireless. Therefore, based on this process I'm unable to provide a definitive answer as to when the froyo software update will be available for the Fascinate. This information is not readily available for the public. Nonetheless, if or when it becomes available you will receive a text on the handset prompting you to update your phone.
Additionally, based on your inconvenience I've issued a $ 50.00 courtesy credit on the account. The total credit amount of ( $ 50.00) , will appear on your next billing statement, ( Apr. 26, 2011 ), and will include an additional adjustment for taxes if applicable. You can check your revised balance immediately by dialing from you wireless device, # BAL and the SEND button. You will be connected with an automated system which will relay your account balance as a free text message to your wireless phone. You may also continue to listen and follow the voice prompts to receive the information airtime-free. You will be provided with the amount and date of your most recent payment, as well as your current balance due.
Lastly, I am also pleased to offer you the option of obtaining a new device with the software update currently, if it doesn't become available for the Fascinate. This offer will not extend your contract nor upgrade date. If you wish to take advantage of this option, you may contact me directly at ( 803 ) 231 - 1825 / Mon - Fri / 2:30pm. - 11:00pm. For your added convenience, below I've listed a link that includes our available device line - up. I hope you find this information to be beneficial:
So it does pay to continue to fight the good fight! I suggest you ALL email verizon and let them know your unhappy!!!
My old Samsung dumb-phone was wonderful. I took crap care of it, and it took a beating (I'd frequently toss it), I'd never give a single concern for maintaining the battery, it got great signal pretty much everywhere (when I went to the woods with a bunch of people, the people on AT&T would have a paper weight, the other people on Verizon would have occasional signal, and I'd have consistent, albeit poor, signal), and I'd easily go a week on a charge.
Occasionally I'd get hit by a software bug, like once ever several months, but over the several years I had the phone (5+ I think?), those were quite few in number.
My Fascinate, on the other hand, other than the screen the hardware seems moderate at best. The processor/GPU don't matter a lot long as they're at least as good as what 'most people' have, since generally programs are designed to be used on the more common phones. Now the GPU could have been leveraged on Gingerbread, but, we don't really have Gingerbread, although people like PK are working on it.
There's also 'only' 384 MBs of usable RAM in the phone, meaning less apps can be kept asleep in the background, causing apps to have to save their state & be restarted more often (IIRC, all the other Galaxy S phones have 512 usable!).
Then there's the GPS. It was flat out broken when Samsung released this phone, and I still have a horrible GPS- the other day it took ~25 minutes for the GPS to lock (even after downloading AGPS data, and getting the no help that cellular triangulation and wifi location services provides), just in time for us to miss the turn to our destination! (resulting in everyone agreeing that my phone "sucked").
No notification LED... we've had to work around that with 'No LED' and BLN- hardly ideal solutions... more like clever hacks. 802.11N also doesn't support the 5Ghz band, apparently... lovely. The battery life is also nothing to write home about. And there's quite a number of other shortcomings with this phone's hardware.
Is the Fascinate's hardware horrible? No, with the exception of the screen (which is quite good), most of it's around par, some above, some below. But the Fascinate's problem is it's crippled by horrible software! Our Devs will fix that, you say? So how's that CM7 working for you? MIUI? AOSP? Your options, at this point, are either use a hacked up Samsung ROM, or lose various hardware support. Is it because our devs suck? Hell no, they've long since shown they're damn good at what they do- but even so they can only do so much at a time. Take the best hardware in the world, but put **** software on it, and you've got ****. Bad software will ruin any hardware.
Good software on bad hardware, though, can at least make the hardware bearable. Next time, I'm picking my phone based off which actually has a fully custom ROMs ported to it, like MIUI or CyanogenMod- that should be a good indicator of how good the software support should be- then I'll go by hardware.
Edit: New post while I was writing... Does "obtaining a new device" mean, "trade in for a phone with Froyo"? If so... that's quite surprising, and it'd be interesting exactly what phones are available for that. Although, at this point, I just feel like taking it until my renewal comes around- all the phones are going to be far superior by then, and, with any luck, this sort of BS will have been reined in by Google.
Im going to call tomorrow and see what that means....but its a start. 50 bucks off my bill is nice!

If you dont mind me asking, what all was in your email? It may be beneficial to know the way you went about contacting them if there are those (like myself wishing to get a tbolt lol) that want to go this route. Also what email address did you send the complaint to?

Why am I still waiting for my fascinate to be updated to froyo? All the other galaxy S phones have received it, Samsung has given you the code, now I am curious as to why we still don't have it. I was told when I purchased the phone that it would be 'soon'. I did a lot of research and am tired of being lied to by your company. Your contract states that I can't lie to you, but your are not held responsible for what an agent tells me. WTF is that?? You will probably loose my business when my contract is up, and maybe even before if I can sell this phone. Why won't you take care of your existing customers? Too busy trying to sell 4G when its not even in my area. I was told 'soon' about that too! I understand that the email I will get will say Im sorry for the delay, but we are working hard at it....BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!

I see things progressing because off our devs, not because of verizon or samsung. I'm tired of big business getting away with anything they want. I get your point, but I'm still trying to get answers.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. While it's very true that our devs are to be applauded for their efforts, the very reason that we have working Froyo roms like SuperClean (aside from jt's AOSP, which still is lacking a few features) is because of leaked builds from Samsung/Verizon. Our devs did not make those, only released them and cleaned them up a bit. We have three leaked builds total now, so there is no longer any basis upon which to claim that the official update will not be released. They would not be putting that much work into builds for this phone if they did not intend to release it once it's complete. Also, I think we should be grateful that they are taking the time to properly fix issues like GPS, which the new radio does, instead of rushing a new release with more bugs.
I too am disappointed at the time it's taking for them to get this release out, but it is clearly coming, and soon, if the last leak is any evidence at all, so I think we all just need to remain patient for a little bit longer. However, I do have one question. We have had working Froyo roms here for quite some time now. If you're posting here on XDA, I can only assume you're interested in modifying your phone, as opposed to leaving it stock, since that is, after all, what XDA is all about. If that is true, why are you still complaining about the lack of official release? Just install SuperClean or your rom of choice and move on.
