I was expecting better performance out of CM 6. however other than yes there are a lot of tweak settings, functionally, there's nothing to gain from nexus one's stock rom. I've seem people say CM has better performance than stock at youtube. but maybe it's just me, I see no differences.
damn where's the google 2.3? still no details on what will be in it.
I love being able to rotate any direction, the RenderFX widgets, changing the haptic feedback, easy access to useragent switching in the browser, application moving to SD card, trackball wake, status bar changes, etc.
To each his own I suppose.
Do you think you can notice a difference in 2 hours?
Give it at least a week then give it a proper critique. Also, Cyanogen is not 100% new code, it is based on AOSP.
It does everything stock does and more. What's the logic of going back to stock?
For god's sake, at least try the newest nightly before talking...6.0 is old stuff and doesn't even contain the 2.2.1 update...at LEAST 6.1 RC1...
there are NO reasons to go back unless you are just too lazy to pass 1 hour configuring it the first time you install...

I too tried CM 6.1 RC1 and returned to PureFroyo Kernal + Geo's FRG83D within about a day. While I'm not running fully stock, it's very close.
I just found that the bat life on CM was not as good as on the Stock ROM or Geo's FRG83D. For example, with stock, moderate usage from the morning to early afternoon would bring me down to around 80%. With CM, I was down to about 70% in roughly the same amount of time.
yes. I will try 6.1 final gold.

Honestly, Once you throw Launcher Pro on any rom it pretty much runs the same. The only differences between roms are the small ones.
MIUI has the a different SMS, Unlock Screen, Toggles in the Pull Down Menu, and a few others. I don't like the iPhone approach, nor the menu's.
CM is mostly stock with a lot of tweaks. I really like the Toggles position in the pull down and the ability to add/remove/reposition toggles as well as the ability to change the taskbar colors on the fly. You can add multiple recipients to SMS/MMS messages. The browser options are awesome having them so handy. Built-in Colored Notification Support. Audio Adjustments. etc etc.
One thing I do (since I like a minimalistic install too) is use Launcher Pro and hide some of the nonsense apps I will never use... or set up once and forget/hide.
Geo does have a good rom but the drop down menu toggles and the taskbar themes sold me. Now I can change my taskbar color to match my wallpaper (white, grey, or black usually) and the taskbar toggles save homescreen estate. Quite nice.
I also am getting hella good signal. My work is in a basement. CM 6.1 RC1 is the first rom that I can actually get calls and text messages down there. Normally I get nothing so it is a huge improvement.
Battery life seems improved for me too coming from Geo's, and Rod-MIUI. Normally I take the phone off the charge at 8am and it's dead by 7pm. Now its good all night with 20% left by bedtime.
After rooting I jumped on CM6 because of the reviews but I couldn't get the GPS to work to save my life. I tried that fix w/ GPS status to no avail. So I flashed Geo's ROM and never looked back. It is definitely the most stable ROM. And you get great support from Geo, he answers all your questions. He updated to FRG83D within 3 hours of its release!
Are the GPS issues fixed in 6.1 RC1?
I used to run CM6 nightlies before switching to MIUI. I miss a lot of features from CM, mostly the CM settings tweaks (limiting rotation to 0 and 90 degrees, integrated trackball settings, hold volume to skip songs, haptic tweaks, and changing the application launched from holding home button); but in the end, I love the new features MIUI brought (namely the notification bar, top-bar battery indicator, lock screen launchers, and vastly improved settings UI). I also find the battery lasts way longer than CM did, even after overclocking (to be fair, I am using a different kernel so I'm sure that helps).
Two WHOLE hours? Wow, you must be exhausted from your heavy trials.
The trackball wake is enough to sell it on me. The pull down menu controls that were added in 6.1 are just icing. Even if you don't use all the features, there are enough different features where almost anybody can find a few improvements over stock Android in Cyanogen.
i've been extremely happy with CM 6.1 RC1, i agree that 6.0 was no faster and maybe in some areas slightly slower than the current stock rom but the extra little features and the freedom to run root apps seals the deal for me anyday but then again i've been running cyanogen roms for a very long time (i was one of the first people with a G1)
The problem with CM6.X is that it ship with a crappy kernel IMHO. If you install wildmonks latest kernel (2.6.35.8_AVS-950mV_CFS_AXI_720p_1152MHz_112010) you'll never see a nexus as fast as this.
After that, you use SetCPU to have screen off profiles and you overclock you phone to the max.
I get easily 10 hours more of battery than stock froyo and and froyo fells like eclair compare to my setup (speed wise)
To be honest I didn't like it at first and did what you did, and went back to stock. But then a week later I tried it again and realized it was pretty awesome. I am running stock now just for the 2.3 update but will root again and put cm on there once I get updated...give it more time.

Hi
Since there has been lot of activity in the Development of Gingerbread Rom for our Heroes( thanks to the wonderful Dev's).
Just wanted to find the popular as the days go by
good call
it does make sense to do it this way
I'm on ele right now. cronos is great but a couple of bug fixes still needed before I'm 100% happy. ele's is quite amazing. want to try tasty but waiting for known a2sd fix and I'm unfortunately not a fan of almost pure aosp. Some cm things are really useful like notification bar power widget etc.
wow over hundred views and not much votes... is it that people aren't using gingerbread roms?
I think I just wore out everybody's voting fingers in my all encompassing rom poll started a few weeks ago.
hahaha
I tried CM7, elelinux and TastyGinger and honestly i am gonna switch back to froyo. Within first hour or so, ROM works pretty good but as soon as i sync with Google (for contacts) and send/receive some text messages, keyboard slows down, my messaging slows down.
for now none ... waiting for a good custom rom, the final version.
I'm waiting for Feeyo to come back with his kernel in Cronos GB rather than Flykernel.
wow - ele's gb is great, totally finished feeling. tasty's pretty amazing from what I've read. cronos is possibly the most complete and really great too. cm nightlies are iffy as always - they're nightlies and that's how nightlies work - but beta3 or whatever his last official one was (lox) was pretty cool.
time to weigh froyo's speed but constant market issues and older features versus gingerbread's great features but slower UI speed.
I've used CM7 but it got lag too much xD....

you should really try cronos ginger instead of re-posting somewhere read bullsh.t. i'm using CG1.0.1 since it was released and there is no single problem at all.
which market issues are you talking about?
I'm back on cronos. ele's gps let me down big time for some strange reason (app locked up, couldn't quit, restarting phone bootlooped LoL).
I used the Elinux 2.3 and its great..
The Tasty is faster but the screen resolution still not compatible with beautifull gidget...
So i return to elinux!
Ele's hasn't let me down at all, only problems i had were due to me xD nice and snappy, stable. ^^
I have used 0.9 cronos and ele's one like bot of them but I seem to have issues with Gingerbread roms in general
Basically after a while the bottom keyboard Keys dont seem to work , an I have to press really hard. or not work at all
But works perfect If I flash original 2.1 rom so am back on the official ROM
But if new rom comes out I do a quick adb root and try em I love the excitment of rom flashing

uh oh. gb might get warmer which is showing teh beginning of a touchscreen hardware issue with your phone probably.
definitely stay away from hot running roms on that phone
I have used the 5th and 9th nightlies of CM7 so far. Build 5 was slow in some areas, particularly with LauncherPro (I removed ADW because I honestly don't like it), but it was otherwise usable in day-to-day situations. Build 9 is significantly better so far; the only thing that would make me completely happy with it would be fully-working on/off animations (if it's possible on Hero hardware).
I wondered why there is no further development on the camera function for GB. I had tried the latest Elelinux GB and then Cronos GB. The camera pictures captured were just terrible (colour almost washout)! Camera on Froyo is still fairly good and very useable. Otherwise, GB really offers something nice for our Hero. Too bad for the camera (on GB), I'm back to Erasmux's Floyo again.
Elelinux is by far the best GB ROM.
I think Elelinix is great enough.........
Using the brand new Cronos Gingerbread 1.1.0 (the non animation version)
Sooooo fast now.
Is there any true bugless/very minimally bugged ROM out there? Tried CM6, CM6, Evervolv, and some others. I'm talking something that can be fully fixed if there are bugs in it, or is there a ROM that will basically be a stock evo with the sprint garbage removed from it, i was wondering maybe I could stick a savagedzen kernel on it and get some better speed from it as well with bettery battery life. I know there is a fresh evo but I don't think that this ROM gets rid of the junkware sprint puts on? Since quadrant scores and the like are mostly useless I'm beginning to even wonder, are you "truly" getting any more speed out of a custom ROM over stock without getting bugs?
Right now I'm on CM7, everything is wonderful, of course except for the bugs. The random 3g -> 1x for no reason, making the internet not even usable. The random mini-lockups/terrible lag that I can get, etc are all just too annoying to deal with when they pop up. It's irritating when I go to my friends and say "here check this out, this thing has more battery life and as fast a he-...oh well actually my internet on it is bugging out right now and the lockscreen I have to really quick reboot for etc etc." What's the point of speed if these sort of things happen, you know? All of the flashiness of gingerbread is starting to urk me with all the bugs it brings, I haven't tried a froyo mod except for myns, I don't remember what kind of bugs I had in that, if any. What's the best way to go from here? Maybe give CM6 a try again and put SZen kernel on it?(I only ever tried it with stock) Thanks for any opinions/sorry for the mini text wall.
Newsflash: CM7 is buggy, and has always been buggy, hence the ever updated releases.
If you want a ROM that's as close to 100% stable as you can find, try the bigger Sense ROM's....
Are there any very stable AOSP ROMs? Especially gingerbread? Or do these only truly become stable when the real releases are out for the phones? Because If that's not the case, why not just run stock, you know? What's the real benefit? The only reason I rooted in the very beginning was to get rid of the junk Sprint has attached in the beginning. I don't mind sense. However ever since I've rooted I've been on a speed/battery hunt thinking I could get something majorly different. Is it even worth it? What is CM6 like with savagedzen for instance? Because that's what I'm thinking of trying next. Or are all AOSP going to have pretty hefty bugs with them one way or another due to the nature of them?
So far the new ports of the Shift roms are solid as a rock. Misfits for stock. Kings for some ultra themed ones and Zone23 for blue.
Give them a try you won't regret disappointed.
Try Misfits Speedy Port. Pretty stable with Sense 2.1. I'm making a rom based on that one that is stripped down, but not allowed to post dev forums yet

What are you gaining over a stock evo, though. Compared to this?
Years ago the phones were slow and bloated. You could install custom ROMs and actually notice an increase in speed.
With the phones coming out now they are already fast and if you root to look for a speed increase you might not notice much. You will notice all the bloatware gone though.
For a stable ROM I would look for a 2.2 Calk ROM or ones like that. They may not have been updated in awhile but that's because there isn't much to add or change. Everything works.
What about myns?
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
See I don't understand why the call them "release [clients?]", and then release a "full version", even when the full version is still buggy with devices. I stayed away from CM7 for that exact reason until they finally got the full version up. Once I stuck it on i was enjoying it so much but the bugs are just too annoying to deal with anymore. Can't even show off with it because of them popping up at the dumbest times and then it's like yeah so much for that awesome phone hack. I might go try myn's again or CM6, not sure. I just want the stock apps gone, and I want a stable environment. Speed is nice too. Being unique is nice, when it doesn't have huge drawbacks.

On the sense side, I've found Koni's elite series III to be flawless...I'm currently running ava's ginger sense and haven't had any real issues with it either... can't go wrong with either of those.. just my two cents..

No smart phone to date is bug free. Cm7 stable is best in my opinion and that 3g/1x bug you speak of isn't a bug but cm7 actually giving you the accurate data speed in the area you are in.
What recovery are u using amon 2.3 wipes fix most issue.when flashing like crazy I haven't had any issues with the roms . Sense or cm7 work fine. Try Elite 3 , Kings out of this world. Um to many to list. Always do a full wipe when flashing new roms.

I know there isn't a "bug free" ROM or phone. But in terms of crippling bugs, CM7 at the moment for me is horrifying when I'm trying to show it to others especially.
As for the 3g/1x bug it is very real, and it's the worst. I get 1x for no reason inside my house and outside on occasion, it will then switch back to 3g if I restart the phone, or wait [sometimes an absurdly long time] until it fixes itself. I've not had that issue with any other ROMs, stock evo, gingerbread ROMs, or anything of the like. I've reflashed completely fresh with and without the GPS fix, with savagedzen and stock - no difference. Maybe it's just my phone, regardless though, there are so many people asking for help on different areas of CM7 it makes me not want to bother because it is not a truly stable rom for Evo for a lot of people. The battery charger bug I can deal with, mine lags to high hell when it's on the charger - that's something I can fix within an instant and not have it bother me. As for the 3g/1x, the random app mini freezes, the lockscreen not wanting to come on sometimes unless I hold down the button much longer until I restart, and other things of the sort, i cannot. It's not worth the flashy menus, and really the battery life is nothing near a froyo ROM, not even close. (I don't expect it to be).

I use amon 2.3 as well, and I always full wipe after storing a backup on my comp (complete full wipe)
I played with my friend's stock unrooted evo yesterday and no joke, the thing randomly rebooted in my hands while doing nothing special at all.
With that said, any rom here is more stable than stock, but try SavageMod 1.2.1, most stable 2.3.3 I've tried.
I have to endorse Koni's. I ran it for over a month, until I flashed Giger today to pay with 'til Koni releases v.IV
It's not overly themed, perfectly smooth and everything I needed to work did fine, and not one FC the entire time I ran it.
The setup in my sig is how I had it set up. The only difference now, of course, is the ROM
I like sinister for stability, its V4 now and I can't think of a single issue with it.

I always like ava's ROMs for fast and stable - Z4 isn't quite their yet, but give Z3 a shot.
No GB on/off animation mod as of yet, but you can add the GB keyboard to any ROM. There a quite a few diff ones from the themes and apps forum.
Gotta jump in here for some input...
If you just strictly want Sense, I was always a Myn Warm Two Point Two guy.
If you can't live without the screen off animation, Deck's Gingerbread is by far the way to go. Yes, it is built from CM7 to an extent but Deck really does a great job taking care of problems. There is a stable 1.0 and beta 1.2(x). Everyone likes CM7 because its popular and known, but honestly after using CM7 for awhile and then jumping to Deck's rom I will never look back.
If you want to remove the bloat from a stock sprint rom don't forget that you can always just do it by removing the apk's from your system with root explorer or through ADB.
How to through ADB:
--adb remount
--adb shell
-- cd /system/app
--ls
-- Once all the apps show up, you just type: rm <insert the apk name here.apk>
--reboot your phone and BAMMMMM!
No no, its not that. I just wanted to see how many people are using cm9, and how many tried it out but went back to cm7 and so on.
running it on my nook color. havent even tried it on my phone yet.
I tried CM9 and loved it, but CM7 is better as a daily ROM at the moment. Few more fixes to CM9 and I'll be moving over to it permanently.
I really like it Android keeps getting better every year
Exactly 45 people are currently using cm9. Exactly 23 went back to cm7 after trying it out.

I prefer miUI but cm7 just gets updated way more.. I feel like it has the latest everything while miUI is still based off of cm7 rc0..
I'll wait until more of the bugs are worked out. I'm still on stock GB (rooted BML) and it has been awesome for me. Battery lasts a full work day, I can go to work and come home with battery life to spare, GPS works without freezes, my music and videos work and play great, I takes great videos and still shots, and the few games I have on there (mainly to entertain my kids) work great too. There is nothing on CM9 as of yet that makes me want to switch until all the bugs get ironed out, which I know will be soon considering our devs have been cranking fixes as fast as lighting lately.

To be honest I have 4 ROMs on nandroids that I switch from at least once a day. I play with CM9 for a couple of hours in the evening trying to get it all set up the way I would like it but it seems signal strength is really poor for some reason. It shows wifi strength as poor 1 room away from my router. My other nandroids are CM7, Sleeper EL30 2.03, and Legendary MTD converted RC2.1.

4 ROM nandroids and 2 older ones take up about 4GB on a 16GB card. I trimmed down all the bad pix on my card and the backups some ROMs leave when installing and have 5GB left over on the 16GB card.

I don't really have that much time. I'm busy and doing a lot of work just to do the minor fixes that happen every week isn't really worth it for me. V4 should be better for updating, but realistically not much changes week by week anyway.

Same here. CM9 has been dam near perfect since I installed it, it even seems to work better than CM7 did on my phone.
Really bummed over the video issues, but I think I may just live with it, as I rarely use video, I mostly take pics.
CM7 just didnt bring enough to the table to make me make a perm change from Legendary RC 2.2 w/ MTD, (which was flawless) but with CM9, I just cant get myself to restore my Legendary backup. Video issues are the only bug that matters (at least to me), and the rest of it was just so much better, I think CM9 is here to stay. Given how great it is now, I cant wait to see what it looks like in a month or two (which seems like a lifetime away, but will be here before I know it)
I can't believe my CM9 wish list has been reduced to:
Video recording fixed (major)
Built in theme support fixed (minor, given I was able to apply a theme by hand)
TV-Out enabled (yah, I know, I'm dreaming)
FM Radio (not needed, just would be cool)
So, with 2 of the 4 items being wishful thinking items, and themes being just a matter of time for it to added in, that leaves a single fix for me to have a flawless (IMO) CM9
I feel as giddy as a schoolgirl!! WOOT!
So I recently downgraded to CM7 just because I wanted something more stable than the ICS/JB ROMs I'd been using. First thing I noticed is the horrible image quality throughout the system; stuff like gradients and the overscroll effect look like bad JPEGs.
The only thing I could think of was to enable 16-bit transparency in the CM settings and edit the build.prop to force GPU rendering, but neither of those did anything.
Anyone know what I could do to fix this or do I just need a better ROM?
Thanks in advance.

Understand that the CM roms are run through with a fine tooth comb before they are released ass a stable mod.
Try a diffrent launcher and see if that is still the case .

I definitely understand that. I was running CM10.1 for a while and it was the most stable (albeit unofficial) JB rom I'd had on here so far, so that's why I decided to switch to an official release - and everything's great, aside from the poor quality on gradients.

I've tried with and without surface dithering, still didn't make a difference. I remember looking when I first got this phone and it turned out that I got the good screen, plus I've flashed like 20 different ROMs and the graphics are always great. I actually just downloaded the latest nightly, so I'll give that a try.
Welp, flashing the latest nightly didn't help. I guess I'll just switch to a better ROM -_-
You might have luck by changing dpi.
