So how come Sprint *****s and hangs up on you if you record a call with them. And in some states the law is on there side,
So then why can't the same laws be used against samsuck. How can that NOT be against some wire tapping laws some where.
Well I really know the answer, its simple laws always protect the money

Wow, we do like to jump to conclusions. One blogger makes a claim, and we all assume the worst. And Samsung did respond almost immediately. According to Engadget:
Update: Kudos to Samsung for hitting this head-on. An hour after we inquired for comment, a company spokesperson tossed over this official quote: "Samsung takes Mr. Hassan's claims very seriously. After learning of the original post this morning on NetworkWorld.com, we launched an internal investigation into this issue. We will provide further information as soon as it is available."
Besides, I thought Carrier IQ was a Sprint thing. Is it on all Galaxies, or just the Epic?

They probably have some legal defense similar to Sony's over the PS3, basically by opening the box you consent to their terms & Conditions whether you've read them or not.
so when exactly do we start overthrowing these companies and take back our rights??

well i was sorta jacked around yesterday, ill be a bit happier if and when i get my phone today. it's just all the mis info i was given that set me off. nobody seems to be on the same page with sprint. this was more of a rant video than anything. didn't expect it would piss off soo many sprint fans. oh well, life goes on. it's pretty common knowledge sprint has horrid customer service skills. i honestly had no idea the store i went to was a 3rd party because they only sell sprint phones and i was told before they are officially sprint, not some 3rd party rip off.
some really immature responses on the video, i expected better from adults. i have every reason to vent like most of you do.

This service does seem bad, but why was it necessary to have the phone in 1 day? If you order it online it usually takes at least 2 days, probably more. Plus you already have your old phone, so what was the urgency?

Here is the official document outlining their methods and procedures for handling devices with suspicion of root.
oo reary ??
so basically it's a "please don't root, but if you do...umm...well please don't"?
Seems pretty inoffensive to me. But the stuff about "schoolmarming" a rooter is ridiculous. I'd like to believe that anyone smart enough to find out about and root doesn't need a talking-to. I also doubt that rooted customers take up much of a support center's time overall. Of course, Sprint employees including Korey AKA WDM may say something else about that.

Appreciate the info but this does not seem to cover what it means if they open a ticket and note that the device is suspected of root. Now with this suspect of root does this then give them an out on replacing or repairing?
Again this is all coming from my experience of my local and only place to get service, threatening to blacklist my phone if he "suspected" root.
Here is the Emeryville, CA store number (510) 596-0930 Give them a call and ask if you can bring in your phone for repair if you have root. I bet you will get a "no"

Print this pdf out and show it to them. Tell them it came from ISC in the "Service and Repair" section. If they ask how you got it, tell them it doesn't matter and that it is your job to know these things.
Yes it is noted that your phone is rooted, but like it says if there is an issue with a phone that cannot be fixed that will Advance Exchange it. No matter what. Trust me. If you have a problem just PM me and then I'll call.

Who in their right mind would bring back a rooted phone expecting it to be covered/serviced. One with a working display for that matter.
You people are absolutely ridiculous.
I've been telling you all this for weeks now, and now korey posts one of the documents I was referring to, and you STILL choose to not only waste your time by going to stock, but making it harder for us to replicate and solve issues by not handing us the phone in the original environment when you found the issue. That can make it very hard at times to properly triage and repair a phone; think of it like forensics, a crime scene is only properly diagnosed when NOTHING IS TOUCHED.
So please, save me the frustration, and simply bring this doc in with you. And if they give you a hard time, tell them to look up the OTHER doc, the one that outlines which tier rooted phones fall in to (tier 2, btw, which dictates a $35 charge if you don't have TEP and free if you do. Which, hey, guess what, is the same ****ing tier as a nonrooted phone! Who would've thunk it!)
And to whoever says educating a customer is unneccessary because obviously they're smart enough blah blah blah...you're ignorant. Very very ignorant. Because no, I didn't get that customer that came in no less than SIX times with a bricked epic from just ATTEMPTING to root, actually ROOTED it for him, and flashed godamn srf, and yet still returned A SEVENTH ****ING TIME with a bricked epic. No, that definitely didn't happen. No way. There's just no way freaking way somebody who is interested in "hacking" their phone is actually an idiot. Nope.

And allow me to reiterate, any trouble you get for a rooted device IN NO WAY IS A REFLECTION OF SPRINT. It is a reflection of the employee, and their laziness/ignorance/misconceptions. Fight them, because they are wrong.
Also, I cannot speak for 3rd party stores (your typical mall retailers). Not only do they sometimes operate under *slightly* different rules that I'm not privy to, but some of them frequently operate poorly and intentionally misguide you.
A classic and shockingly common example is sending us customers with liquid damage, telling them that we'll replace a liquid damaged phone for free if they complain enough.

True story. I received one of those "you've won an ipad" ads in an app I was using during the summer. I clicked on it, and like you experienced, I was directed to a browser which asked me to enter my cell number. Instead of doing that, I emailed the company and asked if I could speak with someone about claiming my prize. An hour later and a few email/phone calls later, I was told an iPad was on the way. Two business days later, purolator showed up and delivered me a new iPad 2 I never view those ads as scams anymore ;-)

If you're telling me that an advertisement popped up on your tablet saying "You have won a free iPad", and then you proceeded to somehow attain a number to the "company" behind the advertisement which in turn shipped you a new iPad with completely no strings attached then there is nothing you can say or show me that will convince me that it actually happened.

I've got lots of proof, what do you want to see? I put my testimonial and provided a link.
Basically, the ad was at the bottom of the app, it didn't "pop up". It clearly said that I had WON, not "you have a chance to win", so I felt that I could certainly pressure them with a threat to report them and to my surprise, I received an email with a phone number I could call to speak with someone. I was congratulated, I had to fill out the "testimonial" and that was it - the lady gave me a tracking number via email and a few business days later, I was an ipad owner.
I'm still telling this story everywhere I go, because I would have NEVER thought that these ads could be legit. The key was that it said "you won"... most ads don't say that, they say "enter to win" or some other bs. In fact, my father came across a banner ad that said "guaranteed winner", so I called them up and refused to fill out anything online. I did "win", but it was a crappy gift certificate for some travel auction, so that was a bust! LOL
EDIT: I have a screenshot of the ad, as I collected a lot of evidence before contacting the company. The link that I clicked on redirects to a REAL scam site now! LOL

You have to be one of the few people that actually won.
Call yourself lucky and dismiss the doubters.
On that note, I wonder what the ratio is of people that buy and iPad vs have one given to them by somebody else? In my personal circle it's about 50/50. (Anybody want to get me a Transfromer Prime )

I never took what you said as disrespect at all. Winning something like this is pretty amazing - it certainly helped take my mind off some of my troubles, and still (after many months of having it), I think it's a fluke that I actually got this ipad.
I say turn off all your ad-blocking software for a week and if you see anything that states that you HAVE WON (it must say that you've won, not that you have a chance of winning), call up the company and ask how you can get your prize You might have to be persistent with some of them as they often expect you to be a "client", but insist that you want your prize without any catches. Make sure you take screen shots of the ad and the page it takes you to as well as noting the URL address.
I was trying to get another company to send me an I pad that I had "won", but they were in germany and threatening to report them for fraud didn't phase them at all...
Good luck!

Cease and desist for PUBLIC files posted on a PUBLIC web site? If people were on the fence about CIQ before, this should give them pause. When I first read about CIQ it seemed like a good way for my carrier to find additional information about dropped calls, but clearly it is much, much worse.

i dont see how ciq isnt illegal.
no one signs a contract to allow them to monitor what we do on our phones.
that sort of thing should require a contract or atleast some knowledge to the people that buy these phones.
no one would willingly allow them to gather information on us and even sell it.
if we were being credited some money back for allowing them to use it, i guess that would be fair.
i honestly think its ridiculous.
this is only on sprint samsung and htc phones right?

Well it may be in our contract. I haven't read the contract, like ~75+% of carrier customers, so we could have agreed to allow Sprint to gather metrics. Regardless of the intrusiveness of this tool, it could be argued that only the metrics gathering segments would be activated. Of course there are always counter arguments.

Uh... yes they would. If the big 4 carriers in the US all had this on their phones, what are the customers options for cell service? The demand for the service would outweigh the need for privacy. Prime example is the Aviation industry and the TSA.
Now in the portal-

Again, these comments are all about worst case scenarios of what this software COULD do, not what it does.
It's about time CIQ and Sprint make some public statements about what this software is collecting. The silence just adds to the paranoia.
So, an interesting discovery lol.
Could you guys look into /dev if you're rooted for me? CM7/MIUI/Stock, it doesn't matter I'm only curious about something.
you guys can't really be surprised about this. Look at the SOPA law running though and how it can devastate how the internet works(torrent sites will still be accessable through typing ip addresses so its really not targetting piracy). AT&T has an agreement with the NSA where the NSA basically can see anything your doing on those phones. Carrier IQ is Verizon and Sprint's Big Brother method. The Patriot Act covers landlines.

Yes, it's CIQ from the kernel side. It's fine however, it's not interfacing with the framework, as far as I know. I wanted to be sure that it wasn't some random thing. It's still present in our kernel nonetheless. In our current source in the parts we don't use there are supposedly 90 instances of CIQ. But only 2 lines closely regarding it involving us. All the others are gone due to framework.
That's funny, Android Central posted about this just a bit ago.

They can try but I don't think they'll get too far especially now that it's already been exempt once.

Technically, if you didnt outright buy the device, you are "renting" it... I hate to say it but if you look at your T.O.S. it's in there... Kinda sucks, but... What sprint doesnt know, wont hurt sprint...

Yes but if you read the Bill Proposel in one of the links. They actually mean all phones. Which is kind of like telling you, that you can only paint the inside of your house White. Regardless if it's yours or not.

Yeah, I remember the G1 days when a lot of people weren't use to rooting phones and the methods were a lot more difficult such as flashing your eng hboot in a crapy recovery. The brick risk was a lot higher then it is now and easier for people to turn their phones into a paperweight lol. Now days it seems a lot easier to root and if you have some issues to just unroot everything back to stock and your still covered in your T.O.S.
I can still remember when the FCC would not allow retailers to sell phones. They could only be rented from the phone company, and were those clunky square units with the front number pad (or rotary in some cases). Things really have not changed.
PS Before making your jokes about how old I must be, this really was not that long ago (I am younger than 35).
