Rooted atrix unable to update - Atrix 4G General

my rooted atrix wont update with the OTA. It keeps going to that android with exclamation point picture....help! i tried so many times with same result.

do you have the webtop mod?
odds are the solution to your problem is in the huge OTA update thread.

yead i do have webtop mod

You'll have to undo the webtop mod.

Mine deleted my entire sd card. Nothing major, but frustrating.

You might need to flash with the 2.3.15 sbf first. I was rooted and themed and the update kept failing. After the sbf, I had no issues with the update.

First time poster and extremely unknowledgeable about how to do almost anything except rely on the technical prowess and patience of the developers and other contributors here. That being said, I too have a rooted droid x (using z4root) and cannot get the ota update to work. I tried unrooting using z4root and downloading + installing only to have it fail.
If someone could please post a link or an explanation (in very simple terms, please), how to both obtain and install whatever this sbf is mentioned above, I would appreciate it quite a bit.
Thanks in advance.

PS: I only use and/or have access to a Mac running OSX 10.6.5 so, windows is not available.

Heres a link I found that may help some of us but, as I've changed the bloatware after rooting, I'm intimidated by the warnings contained on the post.
Please use this at your own risk and understand I have nothing whatsoever to do with the posts contents.
I'm just going to wait untilsome kind and patient soul takes pity on me and explains what to do in plain english with no acronyms.

When you ask for help I would advise for you to at least type in complete sentences so someone can try to understand what it is you're saying. I find it extremely annoying when people ask for help, but their questions are not clear or concise; just a bunch of sentence fragments.
As for everyone else I was having trouble early and just SBF'd. It was the only way for me. Running 2.3.15.
Is this 2.3 gingerbread?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
make sure you don't sbf to something lower then your current version i.e. 2.3.32 > 2.3.15 is a no go. (results in brick i think) also make sure your bootloader is the right version and etc. etc.

GingerBreak

anyone had a chance to look at this and try it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
I've heard it works but I have no need to try it
It appears that a few Droid X owners have successfully used this exploit, according to some of the responses in the link you provided. I'll be interested to see if this will work on the final Ginberbread OTA (keeping fingers crossed)!
I just tried it and it works. No problems arose.
That's definitely good news if the OTA comes out and it's got important tweaks that .588 doesn't have.

If wireless tether works for you then go ahead and use it, Verizon can only track the tbh hack. Some people have not been able tto get it to work

So that hack should be removed post haste or what?
Trust me it works fine on my droid x and i been looking to root for a while and had no luck, but this works!!

As long as you don't use it there will not be any problems
Just SBF'd to .340 and used the official update to .588, GingerBreak worked fine except I'm having issues getting Titanium Backup to recognize it has root. I get the prompt to allow it, but the app still says it doesn't have it. Other root apps, like adfree and autokiller memory work just fine. Hmf.
Scratch that. Just went back into TB, updated busybox and it's right as rain. Two thumbs up!
Works great for my DX, however, I need to un-root it and I've tried several ways from other forums and I am not having any luck.
Does anyone know the procedure to un-root for GingerBreak?
Edit: I don't have Gingerbread installed either, I'm just running 2.2.1 - I don't know if this makes a difference when trying to un-root this. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. I've been scouring trying to find a solution and I've had no luck yet. I've tried rooting then unrooting when the one-click program and that isn't helping me either. Any suggestions??
I don't know if this can be answered but it doesn't hurt to ask. How come the ota cannot be rooted but the P3droid version of GB can be rooted? If its the same thing then what is the difference on why it cant be rooted?
Just going to guess here (this is speculation not fact) but I would assume that p3 being as skilled as he is was able to reopen the exploits used to root that motor/verizon closed in the ota.

yea, what chbennet said sounds about right.
it just has to be rooted before it's put onto the phone. once on the phone, it cant be done.

Rooting first phone?

Hello all, first poster here. I want to root my Atrix, but I already have 4.1.83. Will this cause any problems? Also could somebody give a basic outline of rooting and installing custom roms on this particular phone? Thank you in advance for the info.

The first link is the thread over in the dev section that will link you to the second link I posted that will actually walk you through rooting and enabling side loading.
Good luck and back up your data first. You've been warned.
Ill tell you in a nutshell;
Flash 1.26
Run gladiroot
Upgrade to 1.57
Upgrade to 1.83
Run "afterupdate" gladiroot
Now you're on 1.83 rooted!

That route works as well, but takes much longer and is tougher to do if he is already on .83
From what I understand he would be better off using the Gladiroot method, but he may not be able to do all of that depending on his skill level.
update didn't screw up root
I am new to rooting as well and new to android (messed around a lot with WinMo with generous help from xda thanks).
Rooted my atrix just prior to the OTA update with intentions to try out how rooting worked and hoping that the new update will give me a fresh start if I screw up.
Installed my update 4.1.83 and looked to see if I lost my superuser status, and lo and behold it was still there. Also managed to side-load an apk (original intent for rooting) successfully after the update.
Haven't come across similar experience along the way so far.
(I used gingerbreak).
I had GreyBlur on 4.1.57, did Titanium backup to the EXTERNAL CARD (not internal storage), ran RSD with the 4.1.83, re rooted, reinstalled recovery, reflashed GreyBlur and most of my apps and settings stayed. the missing apps just got installed by Titanium and I had to resetup my home screens, but it was pretty painless. if you go all the way back to 4.1.26, it will put your phone back to stock and you will have to start over again. The last PITA is to modify the build.prop to get rid of the OTA message.

[VIDEO] How to upgrade from stock 4.1.83 froyo to gingerbread 4.5.91

This is a video i made on how to unlock bootloader, install recovery cwm upgrade pretty much the whole process of going from 2.2.2 to 2.3.4 the quality isnt the greatest but it will do it took me reflashing my phone so i dont want any *****ing cause i didnt have to do this.
Credit to all developers who were mentioned, work was used or helped. None of this is my work i simply put together a detailed video guide around 30 minutes lol.

yes to my knowledge because you need the newest cwm which only works with an unlocked boot loader if anyone knows other wise please illuminate me to this as i would like to make a new guide
edit: actually i believe you can sbf the leaked ota from motorolla but not many people are doing this because if you try to revert to stock it hard bricks so this is the only way if u want to go back to 1.26 or 1.83 without a brick.
Wow, amazing work. Thanks for putting so much effort in!
I just got at AT&T Atrix that comes with 4.1.52, Froyo 2.2.1. Is the procedure going to be the same at this?
Thanks again.

it is the same procedure once you ota to 1.83 im not sure if it will work on previous versions also this is only for att

thanks for the hand here.
In fact, after wipe/reboot immediatly after system is up, the touchscreen and volume buttons don't respond at all, the only button responding is the power button....

are you on an att atrix if so make sure you start fromSTOCK and that you do not unzip the update if this doesnt work try one of the other roms same process should work as long as they are zips that install through cwm if still no luck flash to stock and send ur atrix in as a touchscreen malfunction its covered under waranty
Couple Questions:
I have Gingerblur installed on 4.1.83, how do I go back to stock 4.1.83?
Does this procedure also root 4.5.91 or is that done separately?
Thanks
To go back to stock there is a zip in the themes section I believe that will revert or you can SBF back to stock

MOD please link this in the how to's there doesnt need to be any more threads asking for a guide i will be updating soon and adding a video on how to sbf back and upgrade but for now the 50+ threads asking for a guide will find this sufficient.
If I install a CustomROM now, can I run an OTA upgrade when it becomes available? (I've got stock 4.1.83)
I'm just a bit scared to upgrade to CustomROM and become stucked to only other future CustomROMs.
You can't not directly from the custom Rom but you CAN sbf back to stock and it's update

Can the Sprint Samsung Epic 4g on gingerbread 2.3.6 be rooted?
Hello to anyone who knows about rooting. I work in medicne so I can figure out anything with the human body but not with rooting my Samsung epic on gingerbread 2.3.6. I have tried different developers, different sites, and read till I went crazy. The lingo gets old. It would be like me talking to the common public about the interpetation of hemodynamic readings and congestive heart failure. Anyhow, I rooted my epic 4g before it automatically upgraded to gingerbread...then it froze...I researched and unbricked it with a program everyone said did not work...but it worked to unbrick my phone even though it was supposed to root my phone...it just reset it to where it was usable again. When I try to go to certain websites for rooting files to download...they seem to be missing...hmmmm. So again, can the samsung epic 4g on gingerbread 2.3.6 be rooted? If it can, please direct me to some site...so far...I have tried about 5 different sites...no luck. It is also very hard to find anything specific on gingerbread 2.3.6 on rooting...alot of info. on the other versions.

there is a thread that tells you a 3 step method. if you wanna flash another rom then here is what I did. Download the rom you want and put on the sd card. download odin if you do not already have it. download cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5. open odin uncheck every thing even reboot. then click pda put the cwm.tar into the pda. make sure your phone is in download mode. by holding the #1 button on the keyboard and the power button. plug the phone in to the usb. a yellow com box should pop up. hit start it shouldn't take long but it will complete and the phone will still be on. unplug your phone and take the battery out. put the battery back and turn on using the 3 finger method. ( vol. down, camera and power button) then wipe data, wipe cache, go into advance and wipe dalvik. press the back button click then click install zip from sdcard. click choose zip from sd card and then choose your rom and install that should be all. if you want to stay stock and just be rooted you need to download superuser.zip the link is found in the first video. you do the first part the same but instead of wiping every thing you go start into install zip and then choose the super user zip. reboot your system. then you have to go into the root explorer and delete a file but I cant remember the file name. but then you turn your phone off and then you have to odin cwm again. then you will be rooted. i will edit this when i can remember the file name unless some one beats me to the punch. i hope this helps if not pm me and i will try to help i am going to be flashing back to stock and re rooting to day so..
Thanks...I will try it again.
