[Q] i need help fixing my phone - Epic 4G General

i have a rooted sprint epic. I was on the viper rom and tried the ec05 update from clockworkmod v2.5.1.0 and it said failed, then i tried installing [ROM][ACS] SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.0 (Takiya) : and it said complete, when i rebooted it was stuck on the samsung screen for 15 minutes. I tried a different rom and it keeps saying aborted. I tried doing a restore through clockworkmod and it gets stuck on restoing chache, lost and found. it just sits there and does nothing.
when clockwork opens up it saids E:cant open /cache/recovery/log
can someone help me as to what i should do to get my phone running again?

Use this thread and do the steps under : Stock EB13 Deodexed EXT4 + CW 3.0.0.6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
After that you can use any EB13 or EC05 ROM that uses EXT4.
You will also want to use odin to update your modem to EC05; you can go here
http://lostandtired.com/android-development and click on the link for EC05 Modem Package (Odin), after you get your ROM up and running.
put the tar in the PDA area and the pit in the pit and update the modem, faster 3G is what most have experienced with the EC05 modem.
Hope that helps, good luck

put your phone in downloading mode and flash back to the stock of your choice.

xda is, AWESOME
thanks to everyone who cared to help

New to epic =)

hello just got my new epic 4g about 3 hours ago i just came from the samsung mesmerize and before that i was on captivate so far i am loving the epic (because of the keyboard) well i was looking at roms and things seem really different compared to the mesmerize... the rom i was looking at was the Frankenstein FROYO rom and i am looking forward to pick up and test out that rom but the thing is i am a little confuse on some of the things it wants me to do like the whole DK28 modem thing and the convert to ext4 system..... what is this stuff about? and also the whole No Journaling thing? so far i am rooted and thats about it on my phone where should i start lol
Welcome! I also use Frankenstein ROM.
Ok. The dk28 is our froyo leak that we have. If you go into settings and about phone and look at the baseband version that tells you your modem version. If you update to dk28 then the baseband version should say dk28. If you update to dk28 using Odin to flash the rom it will automatically update your modem. The ext4 thing is changing our filesystem from stock Rfs to ext4 which is a lot faster. When you update to dk28 use the one click root with clockwork mod version 3 and once finished boot into cwm by using power down, camera and power button and the cwm3 will automatically convert your filesystem to ext4. The no journaling mod speeds up the phone by about 15%. Having journaling is enabled to protect your data. If you bare in the middle of something and your battery dies it is there to protect it. Now when you disable it you just gave to be careful to Jake sure your battery doesn't die while your doing something cause it could corrupt your data. I've been using it for almost a month and I haven't gad any trouble. Good luck. Anymore questions just ask.
Midnight+midnight theme ftw

Welcome! Glad to hear you are enjoying the Epic so far. I use MeatROM. It works really well, especially with ext4.

Musclehead hit everything spot on, though I'm not sure exactly how much no journaling speeds up your processing capability. I'm on Viperrom Frozen, which uses EXT4 and flashes through CWM3. I think it's terrific. Tried Bonsai but it was too stock for my taste. It's a barebones, clean deal with Bonsai. I go more for the theme and baked in stuff personally.
so im a little lost here i am following this guide to upgrade to 2.2 http://briefmobile.com/how-to-update-sprint-epic-4g-to-android-2-2?cp=5
when i try the first way it says update verification failed
and the 2nd way in odin says SPH-D700-DK8-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 is invaild and then end sooo im a little stuck here and when i use the one click root with CWM3 it wont boot into the CWM it still stays in the standered manger
now i am stuck even more i got CWM3 to install and right after it it turned my phone into a ext4 system it wont boot and stays on the samsung screen =/ and i have the update.zip on my sd card but it is still giving me a error saying error 7

If you run CWM3/Ext4 on your 2.1 install it will bork and get stuck on the Samsung screen. CWM3/Ext4 only works with DK28.
I don't know if you could apply a zip via CWM3 (while installed on 2.1) or not, I would wager you couldn't... but since the DK28 update should apply all the changes as you would by flashing I'm not sure.
The proper process is DK28, then CWM3/Ext4, then rom.
If your DK28 tar file is giving an error in Odin before you even try to apply it, download it again and retry; something got messed up in your download most likely.
ok got my phone to go back to stock 2.1 with the odin way soo gonna try and download the dk28 file again and see where that takes me

Yeah give that a go if the new file checks OK, odin it to get to 2.2 (or you could download the update.zip if it is still floating around out there and install it via the samsung recovery). Boot it up and get your gmail configured etc, then go to debugging mode and run CW3 again.
Reboot into CWM3 and let it finish, then it should boot right up to the phone again. The pick a rom (if you want one) and apply it in CWM3. Just make sure the rom is compatible with ext4 and CWM3. Some are compatible with neither, some with ext4 but not CWM3. It usually says in the thread title which it is.
ok redownloaded it and installed my settings says i have 2.2 and the baseband says DK28 and did the CWM3/ext4 and now im stuck at the same samsung screen again

After you ran the CWM3 batch file, did you reboot into CWM3 to let it finish the installation (down volume, camera, power button at same time to turn the phone on)?
If yes, did it complete without errors?
this is what i am doing right after i installed the DK28 file i started my phone and used the oneclickCWM3 root it went thru fine and started up fine so i reset it and did the whole cam, power, volume down stuff and then it went into CWM and was updating my file system to EXt4 and then after it said complete it restarted and then just hangs in the samsung logo
At the CWM3 menu, you have to install a ROM from zip file.
ok everything is good just need to know if my undervolt took in dont know how i find out about that
So you got past the cwm3 conversion? Yeah you needed to flash a rom or it would get stuck. What undervolt mod are you talking about? What rom did you flash?
Sent from my Evo Killer!!!
I did the franken rom it said that it had the undervolt option in it so I downloaded that and threw it in with the rom

Help! Stuck in ClockWork! E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log

Using: ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0
Completely powering off and/or rebooting system from recovery, keep getting stuck back into recovery and cannot get anything to boot, even after restoring the very first backup I made.
Error is: E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
What I did:
1: Rooted using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808103
2: Booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery and made a backup.
3. Wiped cache/data and tried flashing midNIGHT midNIGHT ROM v3.2 CW3/EXT4 AIO (Build Your Own ROM Edition UPDATED) from here: http://lostandtired.com/android-development (it seemed to install just fine!)
4. Tried to boot but it would not go past the Samsung boot logo
5. Yanked battery, reinstalled, same problem.
6. Wiped again, tried to restore backup, now it automatically boots into recovery and shows this error at the bottom.
Please help!
EDIT:
When I try to restore a backup (that I made before doing anything) It says:
Checking MD5 sums...
Restoring system...
Restoring data...
.android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure.
Restoring cache...
sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext.
Restore complete!
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
Please help me, I will pay you!
I just got this phone a few days ago... so I'm freaking out right now!
EDIT: I just installed Odin and booted into "download mode" -- downloading the stock tar now... I hope this takes care of it
Problem solved.
Odin FTW!!!
Your problem was that you flashed an ext4 only rom in rfs. You need to convert file systems to use midnight.
As you figured out, Odin puts everything back to stock.
Also, the nandroid backup and restore does not restore your kernel. If you are using to to restore, make sure you have a kernel on the sdcard to flash.
It must be going around
Man I am having the same problem you did I want to know where did you get your odin file from mine says it is installed but I dont see where to open it. I had my epic for about 3wks going crazy as well need your help but very optimistic
What are you trying to open?
If odin flashed your phone, then just turn the phone on and you have the rom that odin flashed.
relief
Prblem solved thanks guys
I've done the exact same thing. same phone same everything lol, but when i use odin, my computer doesnt recognize my samsung epic4g, i"ve restarted my computer and uninstalled and redownloaded my drivers twice. I'm trying the process with all the computers in my house, but in the meantime, could someone please give my some hints or tips as to what i could do otherwise?
EDIT: i almost get this driver error message "BlackArmor NAS 1D | no driver found"
Not quite sure why something so simple is turning out to be complicated. Also i run Windows7 32-bit

Same problem here. I have to use a different computer. You very well may have a an internal USB problem like me. Has nothing to do with Windows. Hardware problem. Find another computer to do your flashing with.

Nice!! Welcome Back
OMG, I thought I bricked my phone... thankfully I stumbled across this thread and also this video on youtube: /watch?v=pleE_tzmiMo
I was trying to install midNIGHT ROM when this happened... I guess I need to read futher on how to properly install the ROM (Unless someone has a quick hint as to what I need to make it work)
With Odin, It will restore back to the factory firmware and work just fine, but If I re-root the phone and try to restore my nandroid backup it just hangs at the Samsung screen again. Any ideas?
just advanced restore /data and see if that gets around what is causing your phone to hang. Were you running a rom when you did the backup? You may need to reflash that rom, then advanced restore /data.
And get cwm 3 to flash midnight and other ext4 roms. There is a different one-click just for that after you do the one-click v2.5.5.
Do you have links to cwm3 and the one-click that you mentioned?
This is my first attempt at flashing the EPIC, so my backup was not a modified rom. (When I had my Hero I had no issues at all flashing a custom rom)
When this happens I am have to reflash with odin back to stock firmware, as my backups don't work for some reason. Strangely if I try to restore my nandroid backup after the stock firmware is back on there, I get the same results of it hanging on the samsung screen.
Yes, as has been mentioned, if you're going to a rom that uses the ext filesystem, you have to use the cwm3. I don't have the link., but if you look up "Randy Shear" on youtube, he has a video posted on how to install it.

[q] samsung epic4g stuck, help!

a few months ago i rooted and installed clockworkmod v2.5.1.0 and installed a rom on my phone, everything went smoothly until a few days ago i wanted to try another rom, so i backup my phone on clockworkmod and do what i remember i had to do, and installed the new rom, but my phone just stayed in the turning on logo, right now i cant use my phone or restore my old rom and i keep getting E:can't open /cache/recovery/log
after pretty much any command i try. i need urgent help so i can use my phone!
I'm no expert or anything but I believe if you were using clockworkmod 2.5 you are running rfs (I believe it is) and you were trying to install a new rom which most likely is ext4 which is what caused the boot loop. So to make it eaiser to understand you tried to flash a newer rom on clockwork mod 2.5 when you needed clockwork mod 3.0+ (ext4 enabled). So now your going to have to use odin and go back to a stock of your choice ec05 I would say.
Check the wiki in android development and see what you need to go back to stock with odin, that will help

Yes, you need to Odin back to stock. There are stickies on top of the forums on how to fix a bricked epic, restore stock. My guess is you tried a ROM that required EXT4 file system. If you still wish to try these ROMs there is a sticky at top of Development for installing Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.6.
Do you BONSAI?
I'd agree. The kernel probably is what broke that down, with the ext4. Flash CWM3, make sure you have the correct modem for that ROM, and try reflashing the ROM. sometimes (SOMETIMES) that works, without having to ODIN back. I was on leaky gingerbread with ed12, which doesn't (yet) support ext4 / CWM3, i flashed the ec05 modem back in, flashed cwm3, and reflashed the SyndicateROM Frozen - without having to ODIN the stock- worked perfectly.
This may work for you-
Flash modem needed for ROM
Install CWM3
Reinstall <rom>.zip through CWM3.
there is one problem, my pc wont recognize my phone.
Ok i got it running again, thx everybody!

help(resolved)

Hey I just seriously screwed my self over bassicly I tried to get miui to boot from the samsung fascinate however when I installed it in cmr it spassed out then powered of then went to the bootloader and I get a red error message saying can't mount data or something so then I tried to reinstall Eco 3 Odin using Odin and it worked it booted but it says I have zero data on my phone and I can't install anything. I also tried the oneclick soft unbricker but it fails saying adb divers are not installed when they are. I'm doing this on my phones browser witch is the only thing that seems to be working right now I also tried a band restore but I got the same data error message.
Have you tried restoring to DL17 and then re-upgrading to 2.2?
And how about a good old odin flash?
In worst case, I would ask imnuts for the full odin package, or use a fascinate full odin package to get you off your feet, then reflash the modem, and recovery, then wipe In recovery cyan cwm... Then flash ec03

He is on a Continuum, but you can use a fascinate Odin package to reformat partitions if they get messed up, then just reflash recovery and start fresh if you can get in then... That wasn't a really good thing though to suggest to a newcomer necessarily, so thank you for pointing that out
okay heres what happened firts i wanted to see if i could get the miui rom for the samsung fascinate to boot on the continuum there pretty much the same phone minus the ticker and screen size so i went into clockwork mod and wiped everything then went to install zip from sd card and clicked on the miui rom witch was the process we always used on the hero. then after i clicked on it, it started to install then my screen started shacking and my phone turned off. when i turned it back on it when to the bootloader and a red error message poped up saying
e:cant mount /dev/blockstill(invalid argument
and when i go to recovery it says the same thing when i try to wipe/restore nand it says the same thing. so at that point i powered off and went to download mode and reinstalled eco3 odin using pda mode on odin and it worked then it rebooted and i got to the set up screen and i got 2 force closes daily brefeing and something else i went ahead and skipped all that stuff and it loaded fine after that. however now for some reason it says i have zero system memory so i cant install any apps or save data however it does recognize my sd card but i cant install to sd card. so bassicly the phone functions just no internal memory. at this point i honestly dont know what to do everything on the hero was simple and straight forward and we never ran into these kind of problems. ive also tried to restore my nands and reinstall clockwork mod but still no dice. what i need to do now i guess is get the necessary files to go completely stock and see if that helps. and if someone could point me in the direction to those files i would really aprechiate it. oh and i tried the one click unbricker it sayed success but didnt really do anything.
oh and i know trying to install miui was stupid but i was just wanting to see if it would boot lol.
Download the PIT file in the Development forum, as well as the DL17 Odin package from the FAQ of the EC03 post I made. Flash the DL17 in PDA, with the PIT, and re-partition selected. After that, you should be back on DL17, and can do whatever you want from there.
huzzza!!!
thank god that worked thank yall so much i still cant believe that just happened but restoring the stock odin image worked and all is well. so i guess tommorow i can reroot and restore my nand.
once again thank yall for the help.

[Q] What's Wrong with my Tab?

Whats up guys I have a Sprint Tab. It's not working anymore.
First off, I'm not an expert, or even half way expert. But I do follow walk through instructions well.
Initially, I was using the tab with GB 2.3 rooted and pretty much stock.
After a while I decided to put Cyanogenmod on it to improve my tab experience. It worked for about a month and a half, and then I ran into some problems with it. It started to reboot and get stuck at the boot screen and got no further. I tried upgrading to a newer build of Cyanogenmod but that kept getting stuck too. After trying different builds and a whole bunch of other things I realized that it wasn't going to work.
I figured it was an issue with Cyanogenmod and CWM.
Anyway, I decided to sell the tab and get a Galaxy S3 so I wanted to return it to stock.
I tried Heimdall one-click and Odin to get it back to stock. Guess what? No success.
The Tab initially had the Sprint Splash screen. And it is sitting here next to me stuck at the samsung screen just looping. Pretty useless.
What is the problem? Again I am far from an expert, I do NOT know what to try next.
Any suggestions?
Hey,
Your Tab did not work after new build is probably because of incorrect 'upgrade' procedures. The early CM9 build was based on a non-MTD partition system. The later build is based on an MTD partition system. You would need to restock to GB 2.3.3 going from a Non-MTD to an MTD rom.
Now that you want to re-stock, you will need
CDMA stock ROM 2.3.3 (preferable than the 2.3.5 or 6)
correct .pit file
dbdata.rfs
Flash the CDMA stock ROM while re-partition with the .pit file you have. (re-partition is a MUST going from ICS back to stock 2.3.3).
Once you are done flashing and re-partition, do a factory reset data wipe, cache wipe, dalvik wipe. see if you can do those successfully. If you get a mounting error message (most likely you will, and you will still be stuck at SAMSUNG boot loop), proceed.
Flash separately a dbdata.rfs from the CDMA stock rom you have (extract it from the ROM package and create a separate .tar for flashing or you can search in XDA). Reboot back to recovery and do another all wipes. This should take care of your problem (Hopefully).
you can do all those using heimdall or ODIN.
I hope this helps.
ill try that, thanks. But one thing.... I know you said improper installation of CM9 could cause this. But how come out of the blue it happened and not the first time I did the installation of it?
I definitely remember all the steps at least 9-10 times before I did the upgrade. So I don't think I missed anything at all. Maybe I did, maybe I didn't .
Not sure what to make of it.
ok guys I tried the dbdata.rfs flash
didn't work either.
when I booted into recovery mode, I keep seeing
E: failed to mount /cache
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: copy_kernel_file :: Can't open /cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log
So those are the three error messages that I am getting.
What can cause these errors?

Make sure you tab isn't plugged into a dock, u had major problems trying to flash that way. Sometimes u can't even have it plugged into a charger.
