Mounting storage in ubuntu - Xoom General

I have seen a couple threads on this but no real solution. The long tutorial did not work for me. I hate having to boot into windows just to transfer files, is there an easier way that maybe I'm missing?

There is a way to set up android in a virtual machine butt haven't gone that root myself

Closest thing you'll find is AVD which is android virtual device that we use to debug programs we write. Its part of the android sdk and gets integrated Eclipse when you set up your environment. Personally, I doubt it would be worth a damn for ROM making or tweaking. I am not sure how you would load any software on it other than vanilla android. Also its painfully ef'ing slow. I can't believe with my i7 and 16 gigs of ram it still takes 3 minutes to boot, and on my old laptop it takes 7 minutes. I really think big G could have done better with it, and its due for an over haul.

There is also the route of being able to run in vbox that I have heard, but my guess is that you would need an intel x86 kernel compiled for it....just a guess though.

unless you're confident enough to ruin your device, no. things you need are:
-a BIOS
-a Tablet (not a galaxy phone)
-an ARM chipset
-a fat32/NTFS HDD Partition
-16 GB of HDD (average droid tablet only have 16gb. so why install?)
-and, the ability to choose boot location on booting up
androids do not have all of the above except the ARM thing. so no.
anyways it's still a dev preview not a fully-functional desktop/tablet OS. so don't treat it as such and thank me. even if it's not helping you (ungrateful bastard)

I realize you probably figured it out, but for anyone else that might be wondering if this works, it does. That's how I originally did it, but then I read you can download a program that uses your cd-rom as a USB drive of sorts for the ISO file and I did it that way for my old laptop. I forgot what it was called, but I found it by googling how to install the new developer's build.

Transferring files between micro SD/ otg cable and internal storage

I just picked up a xoom a couple days ago and am waiting on one of the OTG cables that were linked in the accessories page. I'm wondering how one goes about transferring files from a camera to internal storage? I noticed there isn't a built in file manager so maybe using something like ES file explorer? Being that I haven't received the cable yet, I can't just try it out.
And I did search, but the XDA app sucks. Search xoom and you get everything else...
Any help would be appreciated.

I use the HD File Manager app which works great. Have to admit I haven't tested importing pics from a camera yet.
Use Drive Mount to....well mount your camera so it's viewable in the file manager.

Please correct me if I've missed something, but I believe you have to be rooted with a custom kernel/rom that supports usb host mode to do what you want to do. If you do want to root, here's a guide you could use: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
You may have to hunt down the most up to date kernels/roms for the last step, but that's easy.

Using phone an external boot device?

Hey so I saw that they made a mod where you can jailbreak a ps3 through flashing the firmware on the phone or something ( I don't know it didn't work in the atrix) but my windows somehow locked my hard drive and I need command prompt to unlock. I was wondering is it possible to somehow put a live Ubuntu disc or a windows ISO( anything that's bootable) on my phone and bring my laprop back to life? I'm not able to burn any CD's right now. So yeah I think it'd be pretty cool if this is/can be possible. Or maybe some kind of webtop through usb that's able to boot off a laptop. I don't know. These are just idea that pop into my head. Not sure iftheyre possible CD

It's not CWM's fault! It's your own stupidity! There is no such a thing as accidentally formatting! Your music project is gone for good...

If this project was so important to you why didn't you back it up off of the phone somewhere? Dropbox or the free 50GB Box account most got with the Nexus 4 come to mind. I'm not sure if a full nandroid backup includes the contents of the sdcard on the nexus 4 but that might be a place to start looking, that is if you ever bothered to do a full backup of your phone.
You can get your files back, the same thing happened to me, my pocket somehow formatted my sdcard. Look for software that recovers deleted files

What secret? I said there is software that recovers deleted files. Have you heard of Google? Search for software that recovers deleted files and voila, you'll have your dats back. There are hundreds of programs that can handle your problem.

I don't know if it works for our phones, but I accidentally formatted an external hard drive before and used the Easeus data recovery wizard software. It recovered everything. Worth a shot

No offence but he could've searched on Google without anyone telling him to. that's why people come here on xda to get help from fellow members.. what's the point of replying if someone asks for help here and in reply what he all gets is 'go search Google'..

XDA also encourages users to search for answers before asking for help. This place is for learning new things and expanding current knowledge. People won't really learn if they're spoon fed what they want to know.

Boy do you have it wrong. XDA is not a place to come and get help. IT is not a support site. This is a developers site. You are EXPECTED to put in the time and effort to fix your own issues first. Then spend some time searching. (and do search outside your own devices forum) Then you try some things you have seen. If that doesnt work then you can post a thread but dont expect a solution.

I'd love to here about the hundreds of software that recovers deleted files from MTP devices (MTP is not direct hardware access like plugging a flash drive into your computer)

once i deleted my photos from my old desire HD and i recovered it using PC inspector...now Nexus does not have SD card so i am not sure weather that will work or not..

I haven't tested such software, and I could be wrong, but when you connect (most) newer Android devices to a computer, you get access to the files via MTP. You don't have direct access to the filesystem (which I think is ext4), and because of this, you can't do the "advanced" stuff needed for file recovery (I guess checking sectors, free space, and etc.)
Older (and some newer) Android devices when hooked to a computer let you do USB Mass Storage (essentially the same kind of access you have when you plug a flash drive in), which is giving you direct access to the file system (FAT32), and in-theory, should work fine with file recovery software.
so can we mount the nexus 4 as fat32 or ext4? because on mine it just shows up in device section with no name
