Help needed: New User

I just bought my Epic 4G a few days ago and quickly discovered the existence of rooting and custom ROMS. Needless to say I took the plunge the other day.
I attempted to install the Epic Experience Froyo yesterday but it doesn't seem to load up properly.
Seemed simple enough. I boot into clockwork, I cleared data/factory cache, cache partition, and davnik cache three times each. I installed the ROM from my SD card, install says it's successful, so I hit the reboot.
After this I expect my new rom to load up but all that happens is the samsung logo comes up for about a minute, phone reboots again and goes into the factory Android system recovery utility.
Any ideas? Please help, my phone is inoperable at the moment.

Sounds like kernel. Dl a costume kernel and flash it thru cwm.

I'll have to apologize ahead of time because I'm completely new to rooting.
Which kernel should I use (a link to one with instructions would be helpful), and how do I get it on my SD card if it isn't booting up? (my pc doesn't have an SD card reader)

Did you first use odin to install the DK17 modem and kernel through odin? That might be the step youmissed because if you just flashed straight from stock 2.1 to epic experience you need the updated froyo modem and kernel. Check here if you're still confused.

Ya also did you first do the one click root method to make sure you are definitely rooted? If you press. Volume down + camera button + power when booting and the letters are blue you are NOT rooted. If they are green then you are rooted. Sometimes when you install a rom it might take away your root so you might try doing it in the order of this:
1. Flash back to stock 2.1
2. Do theone click root method
3. Flash DK17 modem through odin
4. Install Epic Exprience

I went straight from 2.1 to 2.2 firmware without using odin or anything of the sort. Will I notice a difference? If so what difference will it make and can I just install DK17 modem and kernel or do I have to revert back to 2.1 first?

Hm that is interesting. When i first made the mistake of going from to a 2.2 rom without upgrading the modem my cell & data service wouldn't work. It kept looping on and off and would not stick. Maybe it depends what rom you went to as maybe some require the modem as mandatory and others do not? I am not sure. But if its working for you, you should just be able to flash the DK17 through odin without going back to 2.1.

I just did it today with the newest froyo version out by chance would it come with them? If not where can i get them? I cant seem to find the modem to dl

How can i tell by looking in my phone if i have it or not?

Go to settings -> about phone and then check where it says "Baseband version" it should say DK17 in there. If it doesnt follow these instructions to download the files you need. It has step by step directions

In the first post it has a link to the instructions to properly flash the rom. You can use those instructions to flash the modem and see if it fixes your problem. You might be better off just flashing everything again. It would mean downloading odin and the files to your pc and flashing them to your phone from your pc. The simplest way to do this is follow this thread

Follow the instructions carefully and when your done you have the new modem, the froyo rom, clockwork recovery, and be rooted.

I was at the site earlier but when i click the dl link it takes me to some wordpress and tells me registration is currently not allowed then asks for a username and password
@Raylusk can i do this method even if i am running the 2.2 firmware? Or would i have to revert back to the original is so how do i do it?

You can do it running 2.2. This will wipe your phone and install the new system.

I actually skipped step 2 and everything went fine for me. My laptop was being an asshole and not seeing the phone, so the 1 click root script simply wasn't working.. but then I realized that the DK17 flash via Odin that I got form the epic experience thread included clockworkmod and was pre-rooted and everything so I saw that step as unnecessary.

need to download axura 2.0.6...link?

somehow my axura 2.0.6(final) zip file got corrupted. I wondered if anyone still had it so i could redownload?

Is DK28 to EB13 a possiblilty?

I just Odin'd straight from DK28 to EB13 with no problems what so ever thus far, I thought everyone was saying it's not a possibility?

Not a possibility to update via flashable .zip not with ODIN

I think they were referring to receiving the OTA or updating with the zip file

Ah, ok I see, I've been wonderin all day while I was at school haha.
Oh, and am I the only one who still can't get a gps lock?
Edit: I got a lock accurate to 100 meters, better than the usual 2800 meters, but still not great

I still cant get a lock anywhere better than 2800 meters, running EB13, what can i do to fix it?

It's actually possible (correct me if I'm wrong) that whatever you flashed through ODIN didn't have the modem for EB13. Going back to DI18 and then using the update.zip to get to EB13 is a sure-fire way to get the new modem...
Chances are you actually did get the modem though if you used the link to the .tar that was posted here... in that case I'm not too sure

Yea I used the modem posted here and in my setting it says EB13

try downloading gps status and deleting agps data thru the app.

I'm on a dk28 ROM with eb13 kernel and modem. My gps lock is quick and within 10 meters tops.

Good to hear. I was sick of idiots telling me I have to lose all my data and settings just to jump from DK28 to EB13 (froyo to froyo!).

The only two ways to do this, either using the Samsung tool or Odin, will both completely wipe your data and settings. If you want to save your data make sure you do a nandroid backup before updating and then do an advaned (/data) restore with clockwork after you've updated and restored your root/clockwork.

There are more than two ways.
*Samsung tool (or Odin)
*update.zip (for fully stock system)
*cwm flashable di18->eb13. If you are on dk28, then use the cwm flashable di18 w/ modem in the wiki, first.
You will probably lose data and settings when flashing the di18 zip, but as mentioned before, you can do a backup and then restore /data once you make it to eb13.

What a pain. I have my phone set exactly the bloody way I like it.
I can live with DK28 for the time being, maybe I'll flash once CM7 or some other custom ROM actually supports the Epic properly.

This is kind of where I'm leaning now. My phone works great, I have relatively few problems and introducing new ones just to get from DK28 to EB13 doesn't sound like a good idea at all.
Is the compass/accelerometer issue resolved in EB13? Will Google Sky Maps work properly? Does wifi turn on everytime, without error? If not, I have nothing to gain and everything to lose by even considering updating to EB13..

New Epic 4g - Rooted and Rommed
Hi, I just swapped out my Evo 4G to a Galaxy Epic 4G, I first was trying to figuring out how to updated to the latest mods but thanks to XDA developers i got it all working fast now. I first installed the Root one Click 3.0.0.5/6 and then i tried to install the Rom but it woulnt take it. So after reading much online, i figured i had to take it to Android 2.2 first to install one of the latest ROM's. si i did the Froyo 2.2 update and the I was able to Flash it using the One Click Root CWM3 Clockwork 3.0.0.6 and installed ViperROM Trinity 4.0.4 and now its running Fast and clean I also installed the Genocide 1.20Ghz EB13 Kernel V.0.2
I ran sum benchmark test and got:
16.561 mflops @ 5.06 sec Linpack
1773 on Quadrant
38.99 seconds on SQL
1315, 2948 on Smartbench
My Epic is Working great Thanks XDA-Dev.

Why is this a pain? Barely different than flashing a new Rom/Kernel:
1) CWM, make backup
2) Odin combo EB13/Root/CW (ext or RFS)
3) CWM, Flash EB13 Rom/kernel (required for ext4, optional for RFS)
4) CWM, restore data
I used Midnight 4.0 and Genocide 0.2a kernel. My homescreen, settings, apps, etc. all restored perfectly.

Well, that's one way to do it... as long as it works for you. I was thisclose to flashing ViperROM but it was delayed by a couple days... so I put on Nebula and two days later EB13 was confirmed. So I'm sitting here, waiting for the EB13 based Nebula (or CM6.2).

The fact that you put up with this nonsense is really astounding.
An upgrade should *never* destroy anything on the phone. The homescreen, settings, apps being as they were -- I take that as an absolute non-negotiable minimum, not some amazing contrivance.

[Q] 1.3 update?

Is there an update zip that I can apply to get 1.3 yet? I've tried looking and the only way I can find is to go stock, download the update from b&n, then re-root with mn. I was just looking for an update zip I can flash from cwm.

You can sideload the update from B&N without restoring to stock first. You'll lose root until you re-root, but there are instructions here and here that have worked for the vast majority of people.

so the sideload update will work, I just need to re apply mn 4.5.18 and then 4.6.16? But
i have to wait for the nook to update itself once the 1.3 folder is on the nooks internal memory?

Yeah, I just followed the procedure like B&N tells people to do if they don't want to wait. In other words, just drop the 1.3 update from the B&N site to your nook over usb. After you eject and unplug the usb cable, the nook screen will shut off and it will process the update and reboot. Once it reboots, you go through all the stuff (MN5.18, etc). Work of caution - TAKE A BACKUP NOW!!! I use a bootable sd and do the whole nook that way. Bit of a life saver....

Gingerbread ota = nice

There are a lot of threads I'm sure but I recently Odin dk28 and accepted ec05. I checked for ota and it never came thru so I found a site and dl the update. Simple rename and went to factory recovery and installed.
I was worried about a data wipe this way but it did not. It installed perfectly and is running great. No data loss. Took me 15 mins total.
After trying all gbread leaks and many countless roms this ota seems to be working very well on the old epic. Breathes life back into it.
Linpacks 18ish and quadrants 1700+ for me w 24 apps. Overall very very happy for a stock phone. The epic should have had this a long time ago

yepper, just dl'd and I am impressed. All around worth the wait update. Doubt we get anything else, but it'll keep me happy....till I update to a new phone.

Any chance you have the link for where to download it. Would like to do it for my girlfriends phone

I uploaded the zip I downloaded to update to 2.3.5
You need to apply this to a stock Froyo EC05 phone via stock recovery.

It is in my google docs folder.
If google asks you to login; just use a different browser than IE. I have it set as public but it seems IE and google docs don't talk well.
Rename that zip to update.zip and copy it to the sd card, turn the phone off and boot into stock recovery. Then choose install from update.zip

Thanks for the link, I got it. My only question is I don't remember the recovery boot up sequence, I have an EVO and if I remember correctly the Epic has a 3 button press to get there...
Sorry I know this is extremely noobish sounding, but I have never messed with her phone outside of loading DK28

Are there random reboots? That was the only thing holding me back from going to gb

flashed the update zip and had ei22 b4 it came ota but being stock it runs pretty good i think. cant wait for devs to work on gettin roms all bugfree

Turn phone off. Hold volume down, camera, then power button til the Samsung logo and bottom compactive keys light up. Bam! You're in recovery.

Write-protected file?
When I try to move the file to my SD card it says the file is write protected. I have no idea what that means. Any clues anyone?

i am sooooo annoyed with this ota because my phone hasnt recieved it yet!!!! ive manualy update the firmware and android like five times a day since i herd it was released but still no luck i know that i can get the update from the forums but i just want to feel the satisfaction of getting it OTA after months of WAITINGGGG for this to be released i dont just want to cheat and get it the easy way... anybody else with me or should i just stop being stubbern and get the update files?

I got notice for ota update but I when I tried it, no update available.
