Remove/install system apps from the phone, using an app. The most important feature of S-OFF for me.
Can't I uninstall system apps with titanium?

S-off allows NAND to be edited via Root Explorer
What is the benefit of that?

Correct, S-ON protects apps located within /system/apps.

I have never tried titanium backup, but i find it really easy to delete stock apps with root explorer.
You just browse to /system/app and then delete whatever .apk you dont want
You can also use blay0's overlay file system.
Pro: Same access to /system as S-OFF & No risk of bricking your phone & very easy to recover from stupidities when deleting /system files
Con: Requires flashing aufs rom & doesn't save you space when deleting an app from system.

Doesn't that make it into a "might as well don't" kind of useless?
iv personally found no reason to s-off...i just use adb in recovery mode 2 modify /system..
first of all it sounds so cool
it let us to delete system apps so easily from titanium...
i've put a really cool splash screen instead of general htc's splash screen....
and most important no longer i need to use fake flash method to enter recovery...
and some other stuff developers know about ( i don't )

how do i remove blockbuster? etc? do i have to root?
sorry for asking dumb question. i am new to android and a new verzion customer
IF you've rooted your phone, then the easiest way is to buy Root Explorer (trust me it's worth the couple bucks) and navigate to /system/app and find blockbuster.apk or whatever it's called. Click mount r/w and longpress, then delete it. Or rename it to .bak instead of .apk
There is another way to do it using ADB, but if you're new to Android it's probably a bit more complicated than buying the app. If you wanna know how to do it on adb just let me know.
edit: Also, welcome to the Android side.
lol thanks....
i think i already rooted. im using DroidXRoot to rooted the driod x. i just install root explorer and its not working.
blockbuster.apk cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only.
Do you guys know where the files for the bloatware 3G Hotspot are? I would prefer to use wifi tether vs the included app.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Hide it then. You don't HAVE to use it.
Also when you get the read only message, as was previously stated, you have to mount it as r/w rather than read only.

Just watch out what you delete...I wasn't able to update to froyo because it was missing system apps. I ended up having to reinstall the system apps and resetting all of the permissions.
Now I just use LauncherPro to hide stuff. If you are dead set on removing them though, I am sure most of us would recommend only renaming the apk files instead of deleting. While you can definitely reinstall them, it tends to be a pain. Also, I heard that removing some apps would cause a boot loop. Haven't experienced it myself, but something to watch out for I guess.
Use launcher pro to hide as well

I accidentally deleted the Conversations.apk... for future reference how do you reinstall system apps and reset permissions?
Thanks in advance,
Brandon
Instead of renaming or deleting apps/bloatware, just use "Titanium Backup" donate version and you can freeze apps/bloatware so they don't load up. This way if you want to update the phone later, you don't have to worry about things you deleted that need to be on the phone for the update to work.

This is the tutorial that I used below from android forums

Hi Guys,
There are certain apps that I would like to hide from the App Drawer in my Tab since my friends are literally all over the tab and snooping around in my messages or photos or even password protection apps. Could you tell me of any possibility of Hiding apps from the App drawer or probably RENAMING them to a less catchy title?
Your help is much appreciated,
cheers!
There's only two ways of doing this.....
1. Route your phone and then using a Root Explorer rename the App.
2. Use an alternative Home App.
If you use Launcher Pro one of the options it has is to hide Apps from the App Drawer.
You would have to go back through the menu to un-hide them but it might work for you.
Launcher Pro
Menu>Preferences>General>Hide Apps
Btw, you have ****ty friends...

Beards,
Thanks for the reply. Now, i have rooted my tab and currently on Roto JMI v2. I have installed root explorer. Could you please guide me how to change the name from within ROOT EXPLORER. I mean, the directory / path of the apps? I tried myself but no luck
Cheers & Much Appreciated!
You should be able to simply mount the system/app folder and rename the App in question.
Can you confirm you have done a reboot.
If so Root Explorer should work as normal.

I have done a reboot, and can see various files in the root explorer along with the option to mount. But I am unable to see the apps that I have installed from the market. For example : Catch Notes is one app I installed but can't locate it in root explorer so that I can rename or modify it.
Cheers!

Sorry but if the App is not showing in a search you must have a problem with your rooting or the file manager.

How You Use " Root Explorer " To rename App ??
hey guys, i have the mytouch 4g and i recently moved the htcalbum.apk and htcalbum.odex files to my sd card and instead installed gallery 3d. i tried moving htcalbum bak to system/apps with root explorer but its not working, and i cant send MMS messages . im new, can someone help me, a tutorial on how to push the htcalbum.apk and.odex files bak to my phone. im using the stock htc rom that came wit the mytouch 4g.
Thanks!
As long as you have the system mounted as R/W in root explorer you should be able to move them back. If its giving you an error in root explorer saying it can't copy... hit the bottom on the top right of the screen in root explorer. You probably aren't mounted correctly.
Also check your permissions. But they should not have changed if you just copied them over.

exactly, i just moved them back, htc gallery isnt in my app drawer and when i go to applications, manage apps, All apps, its not there, jus the 3d gallery one, should i restart the phone? And i actually Moved the files to my sd card, not copied them lol
Make sure you have fixed the permissions.

The 3D gallery is a stand alone .apk. You do not need to delete it. You really didn't need to delete the files you deleted earlier either, if you want to use the 3D gallery perm.
If i were you i'd either flash the PD15IMG via the HBoot (be carfull you have the 2.5 recovery image), and start over fresh or flash a new ROM. their are few floating around with MySense ROMs.

I have tried to edit the boot animation using UOT kitchen on the LeeDrOiD rom since version 2.2 but have had no success!
i believe it is stored in system/customize/resources. i pick this option in UOT and the boot animation doesn't change.. i pick the option "Sense ROM" in UOT and still no change... any ideas?
It might be write-protected. If you can, get root explorer, and get a custom animation zip file.
Make sure its called bootanimation.zip
Copy to SD.
Using root explorer, navigate to system/customize/resources, mount as writeable, (little touchbox near the top). You should see a file called bootanimation.zip in there- that is the one in use.
Now go back, find where you saved your custom bootanimation.zip, copy and replace the other file. If you want, rename the original to bootanimation(1).zip and place your custom zip in next to it (in case it doesnt work and you want to revert to previous animation.)
Exit, Reboot, and should be done =)
Hope this helps.
Yeah that method definitely works as I've got a custom bootanimation on LeeDrOiD 3.0.2
Also, while you're there, you can delete (or rename) android_audio.mp3 if you want to get rid of the sound on startup.

When I rooted I S-OFF'ed straight away, so to be honest I don't know. As far as I'm aware, no, you need S-Off for the SPlash screen, not the Boot animation. Don't quote me on this though

Think so yeah.
I thought S-OFF was needed to make changes to the system folder while the phone was switched on (in it's normal mode...) ?
Maybe I misread somewhere
Like I said, I'm not too sure, I guess there's no harm trying it with S-ON?
@UKseagull, if you want to get S-OFF on the desire, try Unrevoked-Forever, if that doesn't work (like for me) I found an alternative.
Get AlphaRev, Click Here and download the .iso file.
However, I had a little problem burning the image as it wouldn't boot, so I used virtualBox to run it and gain S-OFF that way.

Confirming, to edit system folder you need to be s-off. Any problems with adobe flash, as it's in system, you need to be s-off. Struggled to make changes till s-offed today.
I'm gonna give it a try now..
I'm S-ON so if that doesn't work, would using adb work?
Edit: Just realised there's a second page LOL. I don't particularly wanna S-OFF, should I try adb?

I believe if you use ADB you can put the bootanimation.zip into /system/customize/resource folder.
If you haven't flashed the ROM yet you can just delete the original bootanimation.zip from the ROM zip folder and replace it with whichever one you want..

Anyone know where to get the sound that the boot comes with (R2D2)

There's always adb!
Its what developers use to test apps.
You can access system partition(can only copy files from phone not push), and data partition. android commander is something you would like to use as a ADB file manager. There's many guides online to get adb working. But this is all done on a PC.
Also you can access data partition with a non-rooted phone, and I'm sure you can copy stuff from it with root explorer for example. I'm not sure about putting files in that partition and editing .xml and .txt with root explorer though.
