I'm a new user of the SGS and am waiting patiently for my first Android phone to arrive. I have read many, many, many...did I say many post, here and on many other forums alike, concerning the SGS. I have read pros and cons and tips and tricks, but most have been on phones that have been 'Rooted'. I will like to defer from doing such thing(at least not yet) but would rather wait until Samsung releases the official Firmware that will supposedly clear all(most) of the major faults that the SGS has.
Now I would like this to be an official thread that would help those of us, who have a stocked SGS and may or may not be experiencing major lag, to help give tips on how to improve the stock SGS as it is already; for speed, what programs to use etc. It would be very comforting to establish what folks have installed on their phones and any recommendations to getting the best out of their stock SGS as possible, in waiting for the New Update Official Samsung firmware to be release.
So please, offer any advice or tips for tweaks or programs to get, maybe a place to get them if possible, so as to make life a little easier. Thank you.
I received my galaxys exactly a week ago and i immediately jumped onto the Market.
Make sure you have a google(gmail) account, as it connects the accounts.
My best downloads are as follows:
-3g watchdog. keeps an eye on your usage
-Astro . file manager
-Audiomanager. speaks for itself
-facebook
-galactic core free . Epic live wallpaper
-mario live wallpaper . not available on market, google it.
-opera mini- web browser, better than stock
-shake them all- THE BEST LIVE WALLPAPER EVA, moves droids react to accelerometer, sound and light.
-starfield,live wallpaper
-Task Manager. essential task manager for watching all your apps and services.
thats it, just search the market and XDA for other cool apps
Those are some really nice tips. I do appreciate. I also like to concur about the Opera Mini app. I use that on my N95 8gig at the moment and there's nothing that can come close. although, there are a few bugs that I think they kinda left out due to the Andriod fever, which I have apparently gotten Regardless, I am glad they have an android app of that in the market. I assume there is already a Market app on the phone, already, right?
Also. What about apps that you do not ever use? I read about not being able to remove them but is it possible to completely disable them?
The android market is pre-loaded onto the phone. there are many apps that come on the phone that are really useful. There are a couple of apps that you may not use but most of them are really useful.
I dont know that you are able to delete these stock apps but you can change the default apps. For example if chosen as default, Opera Mini opens up ALL web links and is really useful. The Stock browser is excellent but im used to opera as i used it on my Satio previously.
The model i bought was a 16GB version and 2GB is reserved for apps, ive also got a 16GB sd card so im not worried about storage.

Also been using Astro but I prefer Dolphin to Opera.(Used Opera mini on my N95)
BTW all: My first post on the forum so G'day to all.
G'day Mate
As the Dolphin compared to Opera mini?
Just go and try it,its also free from the market. You may still prefer Opera, doesnt matter.Give it a go anyway.
I will when I get my phone. That is why I asked. I do not have my phone yet.
Just a suggestion which hasn't been mentioned yet is to try LauncherPro or ADWLauncher as it makes customizing your home windows much easier. I love being able to customize the info I really want to see. Also spend some time using swype and you won't want to go back.

I tried the Opera mini 5.1.21126 version and I think the tapping response is weaker than the stock browser. I had to tap several times to get a response. Either that or the mini is not calibrated accurately. I've reverted back to the stock browser. I will give Dolphin a go.
Anyone have any tips that I could use to make my Android/Atrix experience better.
Any tips?
*Sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Oh sorry, didn't see it. Don't need to swear at me.
Here is my tip from my shallow experience with the phone and android.
1. do factory reset after your phone has been fully charged to 100% for 4hours-ish while its turned off
2. get before update root
3. update to 1.57
4. do the post update root
5. get titanium backup pro and go to the freeze the applications under the safelist.
6. get an launcher (I bought launcherpro plus, but i think just launcherpro is just as good... because the only major perks i've noticed was the launcherpro widgets and widget resizing)
7. freeze the motoblur home(after installing another launcher like lpp)
8. download screengrabber app (it works on rooted phone and I like using it, you may not need a screen capture program)
9. do the webtop mod if you want to try it. you need android sdk first to do adb commands. (I tried it to see how lapdock would feel like and I found it pretty good)
I love launcher pro, as it looks so nice!!! 3d app drawer and home screen flipping animations, and overall so many settings you can customize. (# of app row, column etc)

That was pretty pointless...
no need to cuss...
I was in the same boat as the OP and it was hard for me to search through the massive massive amount of info on this forum.
No need to be so hostile... There has been alot of hate on the forum lately. I know it gets annoying when the new users start asking questions that can be found by searching. But, you have two sensible choices: 1. give them some tips so they know what to search for, or 2. don't reply to thread and let the thread die off...
Dude, You better calm down! I just got banned a couple days for fighting with somebody and cursing and you have a ****load of posts just like this! I had 2 posts then banned! You've been lucky so far but all someones gotta do is report you and then here comes the ban hammer!

if you dont need stuff like email, calendar and contacts updated to the minute its a good idea to disable this feature in settings and with titanium backup. theres a big thread in the dev section about what apps from att that are safe to freeze with titanium. this alone will significantly increase your battery life.

and if you're feeling real brave??.... You could root the **** out of it and flash gingerblur or gladiatrix or the newest rom greyblur!! Im about to flash greyblur right now!
If you want a gingerbead look to your phone, as well as getting rid of the hideous white notification bar, you should try out GingerBlur, a pseudo-rom for the Atrix.
GrayBlur has also been released, which I'll be trying out shortly.
Get a launcher. If you have the money (15$) I would buy SPB Shell. That is one amazing launcher. Or just get one of the many others like ADW, Launcher Pro, Go Launcher, etc.
If you want to tether (data plan required), go to the dev section to get the tethering APN for mobile hotspot.
Install Tenfar's custom bootstrap recovery. Allows you to flash ROMs.
Install the Amazon App market. A free paid app a day (games too).
And last but not least: check out the themes section. Lots of cool themes and boot images.

You'll have to side load it. you can enable that by running glad root.
Then, download the apk from amazon, put it on your phone, and install

Yeah as long as you reinstall amazon appstore all the time with it and I was reading that the appstore is kind of a form of spyware and require too much info from the user.
Uninstall appstore and you'll see. I had angry birds rio and a few others for free. I uninstalled the appstore and then my apps just stopped working! I heard this would happen but didnt believe it! But it is 100% true! Which like I said sucks!
How do I disable MotoBlur using TiBu?
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Get GO Launcher EX. It's so much smoother than stock, you'll love it. I just returned to it after using LauncherPro Plus for a few weeks. Features on LauncherPro are great, but it had some stability issues for me, and GO Launcher is MUCH smoother and consistent for me. There are a lot of themes for it as well.
This is the new market rolled out for the zoom the other day.
Enjoy

Why have they changed the interface.
The previous one looked great.

this looks just like the new market on the android phones. i dont really like how it looks..... i wish there was a way to hide the movies/books from the market because i doubt i will ever buy/rent a book or a movie from the app store. i noticed no difference in performance. im sticking with the old market for now, but thanks for the download

Precisely the reason I renamed marketupdater on my phone, and will probably be doing it on my tab too.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
I tried out the new Market app but had to remove it. It caused Earth and Legend to crash on load and I read a report that it causes Dungeon Defenders to crash too. I'm guessing these apps may have some type of protection that calls the Market app?
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
I'm now running this new market on my a500. I must say that the old market feels cumbersome and clumsy.this is way more suited to hc and is feels streamlined...
I love it on my DInc2 it took a while to get used to but I can't stand the old market anymore.
I haven't run into any problems with crashing apps. Earth runs fine. I'm using honeyvillain's rom.
Does this improve any problems with the Honeycomb Market, like reviewing apps direct from the tablet?
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
Portrait mode is sweet although the market is really crying out for a customized view, wierdly though the old market is still available alongside the new market on my tab 10.1(overcome rom). Accessing app details is not very intuitive, clicking the icon for the selected app shows details but there is no visual prompt to suggest this(could be a BOB issue). No issues launching any apps so far.
What's the best way to install this? I would think to remove Vending.apk from system/apps, rename this file to vending.apk and put it into the apps folder...is that right?
Update: Nope, don't need to do all that. Just download and install
Update: I LIKE! Portrait mode, FINALLY able to click a screen shot for a larger image, everything flows very well, seems like this market version is even better suited for a tablet than a phone. Thumbs up!
Thanks for the download MJ-12!

I softbricked my Bionic 3 times the other day and spent the next 5 hours figuring out how to un brick it. Now I'm rooted/rommed and smiling.
Today I softbricked my Galaxy Tab twice... (Sprint/CMDA) but spent the next 3 hours reading reading reading and found the answers.
If you hit a snag, I can guarantee there is a fix already posted for your problem. You may not always find the right fix on the first try, but eventually you'll find it something that will work.
Don't forget
Backup your tablet with CWM or Titanium Backup. Also, look for the stock rom just in case you brick your device so you can go back and reload and try and start again. The first post in the developers section is an excellent resource when you start out trickin' your tab.

It will depend on wich are your preferences, and of course, your Tablet Model
Personally I use Overcome 10.1 Series, version 2.2.0... (you can find it in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android Development section)
This because it supports 3G and it also improved a lot the performance of my tablet.
If you want to overclock your device, I recommend you to use pershoot kernel. I overclocked mine and it worked fine, but I didn't see a huge difference, so I only overclock it when i play games.

Try a few and then choose wich one you like more.
I agree with trying as many as you can. I'm wifi only and think u should flash galaxy task 10. It's based off 3.2 honeycomb and run adw launcher ex. Very smooth. Task11 that was just released has a few bugs still. Or you can try the cm9 kang.... its ICS but personally I don't feel it's stable enough for a daily driver.

I prefer Gtask10 to Overcome.
Wipe data, cache, davlik, then flash whatever next Rom you want to try.
Never try flashing one Rom over another w/out wiping. You'll just be asking for trouble.

I go balls deep on the GalaxyTask rom. 13.1 is out and slimmed down. Flash the b00sted ICS theme after you allow the rom to boot fully and you will have one snappy device. Just remember to FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS IN THE OP. Seriously, it gets annoying reading his thread and seeing the same question over and over because no one read the instructions in his OP.
Hi, have had much fun with my rooted HTC Sensation, and I've this great Samasung Galaxy Tab 7.7, but is worth it to root my tab? Waiting for ICS to come for 7.7...
Yes it is because you can install titanium backup to back up all your apps and CWM to install different mods and more importantly back up your entire tab. Since you already have the experience you already know the benefits of it.

On top of the normal reasons to root your Android device, root apps and what Adinis78 mentioned, the number one reason to do it on the 7.7 is the mod to keep your launcher in memory instead of always having to load icons/widgets when returning home. I almost returned the thing before finding Jade Eyed Wolf's instructions.

Until Samsung releases an update with a fix, or app devs change the way that apps address the external SD card on the 7.7, rooting and editing the platform file is the only way that any installed apps can write to your external SD card. It's annoying to have to hack the device to get it to work correctly, but there we are.
one to choose?

I wouldn't worry about roms right now unless you are a power user since ICS is probably going to come out soon. but here some general reasons for rooting that I know of:
-Keep launcher in memory (so homescreen icons and widgets don't lag upon reload)
-To apply a theme to the notification bar at the bottom
-HoneyBar/HideBar to get true full-screen (my main reason)...This is arguably the most important reason to root since AMOLED screens have a tendency to burn-in. with your clock and controls there ALL the time, it's very possible that prolonged use at high brightness will burn it in. it happened to my first Samsung Vibrant within a couple of months
-Chainfire to get access to tegra games
-Ad Free to get rid of all in-app ads
-Back-up/restore for apps
if you care about any of these, rooting is super easy....if not, then dont worry about it
