Why does my phone show "awake" when it was off all night? - Nexus S General

so i woke up this morning to find my phone dead, i check battery usage and it shows a sharp drop in battery where the blue bar for awake starts. i checked my running apps and the only thing i could think of is google maps or my live wallpaper.
thing is, i've had both of these on for a while now. what does it mean when it says 'awake' anyway?

I don't know but other people have seen this issue too. A few times it looks like the awake time starts right at the point when signal was lost then recovered, and stayed awake from that point forward. So check that. Otherwise nobody knows, as nexus one phones on 2.3 have the same issue now.

Phone refuses to sleep, 100% awake

Alright, I've been having this re-occuring problem for a while now. It does NOT matter what ROM I use, it happens on them all so far (DC, Fresh, Aloysius, Regaw, etc). Let me go over exactly what has been going on.
When I wipe everything and flash a new ROM, the phone does everything as it should. It sleeps like it is supposed to and a fully charged battery will last a very long time.
For some reason there comes a point (a day or two after flashing) where I notice the battery dropping faster, and I notice that my awake time is the same as my up time. I've used "Battery Use" and "Spare Parts" in order to try and locate any possible problem.. nothing is showing. The only thing I know is that when the problem starts: Spare Parts -> Other Usage, shows Running @ 100% and when I click on "Running" It says the phone went (however long) without sleep.
Last night I wiped everything and flashed Aloysius 2.0.2.. I decided to monitor it more closely and chose to NOT install ANY apps, just to see if the problem happens. So the phone was sleeping properly all night. I went to sleep and chose NOT to charge it, because it seemed like the problems started when I charged it or plugged it into PC. So I left it unplugged all night. I woke up and saw that it slept the entire night as it should.
I was messing with the phone, couple of emails, couple of text messages, a few phone calls. The phone was at about 14 hours of uptime and 1 hour awake at this point. When I finished with just some calls and text, I left the phone alone while I went outside to do some things. I came back and checked the uptime.. 18 hours and awake time 5.. Phone refused to sleep again.
I shut the phone down, took the battery out for 60 seconds, put battery back in, put cover on, booted phone back up ("power cycling"). Phone has been on for 5 hours now with an awake time of 5 hours. I can't find anything unusual in battery use nor spare parts again. Now the "Other usage" in "spare parts" shows "Running" as 100% with no sleep time, but I can't figure out what is causing it to be constantly "running". I've even gone as far as to shut off all background data, syncing, locations, and even evdo all together. I have tried so many thing and can't figure out why ONLY a WIPE+flash fixes this temporarily?
Sorry for the extremely long post, but does anyone have any ideas or experience similar problems?
have you tried giving your phone some sleeping pills?

You aren't running a2sd are you? You're sure that your apps aren't just getting reinstalled after a restore because they are actually stored on sd:ext?
I had this problem. The 1.5 release was supposed to fix the problem. It was the dialer running at 100%. Didn't fix it for me. Talked to HTC and they said the problem still exists sometimes. But I had to exchange my phone and the new one has never done that. I think they had some bad phones. If you can't figure it out get your phone replaced.
Sorry I should have mentioned, I forgot. I used to run Apps2SD. I thought that may have been the culprit, so I partitioned my SD card again.
With the latest wipe, I partitioned my SD card with 0 ext and 0 swap, all fat. So no apps2SD now. With the partition was a complete format, so there was NO data on the SD card to restore from. My restore data is on my PC only and I haven't used it.
Edit: Also, I have a minimum of 4 out of 6 bars at all times. 0% TWS

Reboot sometimes fixed it but them it was only temporary. If I remember right it started the always awake again sometime between 12-24 hours after the reboot.

I've been having the same issue with the new 2.1 ROMS as well, for some reason, only a fresh wipe will "temporarliy" solve the issue and after a day or so, 100% awake time, with no apps installed nor A2SD running.
I had the problem. Ended up being Slacker. I have to remember to use the "Exit" button of Slacker or else it never goes to sleep.
What worked for me
Was I would open up Advanced Task Killer, then go to the services tab and hit end all several times. I would keep doing this until the awake time began to drop. Problem was whenever I restarted the phone it would return to the way it was, but after doing this at least half a dozen times it drops the awake time on its own after a restart, so now the awake time hovers at about 6-8% which I think is pretty dern good from 100%.
so
1. Go to ATK (or dw if you dont have)
2. Go To services tab
3.hit "end all"
4. Repeat about 5 times
5. Press the power button to make phone sleep
6. Wake phone back up check awake time in setting
7. Repeat if necessary
also if you have problems dl from the marketplace afterwards, just sign into google talk, and that will set things right.
also your phone will restart all your services every time you end them, so dont be alarmed if you lose your signal and internets for a second or two
i dont know why this worked but it did for me at least
Make sure "GSD.apk" is missing from /system/app. That tends to suck the battery up rather quickly.

Well, After some testing, it appears that my 100% awake BS always starts when I use the dialer and make a call. I got it to go into psycho 100% mode again, even after reboot. I've tried ending all services in the past but I wasn't persistent enough apparently, lol.
At first I tried ending services once, didn't help. Then I went crazy and constantly killed the services over and over for a solid 30-40 second as they opened up again. Eventually I killed ATK and let it sleep, it actually sleeps again.
So... some weird problem with my dialer/phone app (no matter the rom) but at least I found a solution! Thanks amallama.
I think you are simply having a problem with badly programmed apps. It sounds especially suspect that this is happening to you regardless of what rom you are on. Have you installed anything new recently? in the past week I've run into a few apps that have prevented my phone from sleeping (awake time ~89% after 12 hours of uptime).
I deleted fandango and gigbox and awake time and battery life went right back to normal.

Something's not right with my battery, don't you think?

Ok, guys look... I know there are lots of variables, but I get back from work, it's been 12 hours since my 100% charge, I'm at 26%. I get home, I charge my phone. It's back up to 100% in about 2 hours. I try some weather widgets on my phone, answer 3 emails quickly, I'm down to 83%. Something must be up, right?
I have notice this happen and its because the phone reads the battery is at 100 but you still need to let it charge longer for it to hold the charge. I suggest a full charge then kill it until it shuts off. Then let it charge while off until the LED turns green and maybe for a little time after that. Do that a few times and you should see some improvement.
Ok, well perhaps I'll have to try that then. Can the battery be reconditioned? Do these batteries have memory?
How long have you had the phone? Battery life should improve after having the phone for 5-10 days.
Like what joe333x stated. When I first got my phone I charged it up to 100% and turned it off until the led turned green for about 30mins. After that I get about 16hrs of battery life.

I've had the phone since last Thursday night (not yesterday) and I know that two times, I unplugged when it was orange. Guess I should have left it.
The other thing possibly battery related is that right now for example, I have thhe little cycling arrows icon on my taskbar. I am 99% positive that I have nothing set up to be syncing for THIS long. It's been on all day. I unplugged at 7:45AM, it's now 11:21AM, I've done maybe 15 text messages, and the phone is at 77%. You can see how I might find this frustrating.

i understand. i'm having the same problem. my battery died on me after 5hrs of usage, or complete setup, i should say. i just got off the phone w/ t-mo support in hopes of getting a replacement battery. no go. the operator said her phone dies in 2-3hrs, so i should be happy w/ 5. opted me to buy a spare battery for $50. i am very displeased.
you guys have something running in the background for sure ..go into your acocunts and sync the very least turn off the tmo garbage if not all of them except for google.. If you see my thread I've gone over36 hours on one charge
I've got all of them off, even weather cause I'm using Weatherbug.
But I do have background data on. But I don't wanna be completely disconnected to my data. What exactly does background data run?

my 5hr kill is after doing a factory reset. only thing set to sync is google. no facebook or twitter accounts are linked. display is on the minimum. screen timeout is 15sec. no wifi, bluetooth, or gps. so i'm at a lost.
are you still experiencing that kind of life?
Same here. No wifi, no bluetooth, no Google, no GPS. All I have even remotely "automated" are my emails, my text message data, my freakin phone. That's it. It's gotta be the battery charging thing I think because there's nothing else draining my battery and yet the little sync circular arrows are still on my task bar.
Oh, and by the way... since my message at around 11:15 or so, I'm now down from 77 to 70 per cent. 7 percent in an hour without doing anything.
The things like tmobile and weather are set to sync automatically from the factory (meaning theyre set after a wipe) Have you guys gone into the settings and made sure you turned them off??
I have, yes. They have been off all week. 12 hours usually gets me down to about 26 per cent. That's a 6 day average, moderate use.
that doesnt sound too bad for 12 hours.. have you tried killing it a few times and fully recharging?
my thing is, i find it quite unpleasant that i'm having to disable all the basic or advertised functions of my phone just to have the same, if not, worse battery life? i find myself not even wanting to answer some calls because of the thought that one 5min conversation will dock my battery more than 5%.
It is incredibly ridiculous to have to be constantly concerned that if I do a search on the internet, that my phone may die earlier than I can afford. Additionally, I don't wanna be one of those annoying people running around all over the place with an AC adapter trying to plug my phone in every place I go to. Nor do I think I should have to keep a USB cable handy for when I'm at work. Plus, what's the deal with the batteries, do they or do they not have a memory that requires them to be fully charged and then fully discharged?
Hey guys,
I just joined because of this specific issue myself. My girl has the mytouch 3G and she could go for almost TWO DAYS without a charge. I leave my house at 7AM every morning, and return about 7PM. By the time I get home, I've maybe texted a few people, made one or two phone calls, and my battery is sub 30%. I've turned off wifi, bluetooth, and the display is just about as dark as it can go.
I just turned off the background data option, and had to manually go into all the accounts and make sure the sync was also not running. We'll see what happens.
Does anyone know if there is a 2.2 FW for this phone we can use yet? I've read up on user created FW (like cyanogen) because they cut out all the useless crap most of us will never use.

I noticed this too. Its due to that fact that from default there are a bunch of things that sync now not just your gmail account. Go into settings and disable all the unneeded things and you wont see it as much.

I have had these issues before and it was almost always due to somthing in the background.
but letting the battery drain till it shuts down then charge 5+ hours then drain again, always going till it dies is the key, it will run a long time after it says it is done...

i'm continuing that "conditioning" now. it died yesterday after 5hrs fresh from a factory reset. i charged it for 8hrs. i will perform another day of drainage and overcharge today.

Battery Draining Bug?

I think I've discovered a bug on the X that's causing battery drain.
I installed Spare Parts and saw my phone had been unplugged for about 12 hours and that my phone was been Running (not sleeping) for 100% of that time.
After being methodical and getting data points after opening various programs, I determined that after I opened any program that accessed the GPS, the phone no longer would go into sleep mode.
To get the phone to start sleeping again, all I have to do is toggle GPS off and then back on again.
It's completely reproducible every time on my phone.
Now, I don't know what kind of effect this will have on battery life, but seems like it probably would have some effect.
If others can test this and see if it affect you at all, it'd be helpful to see if there's a potential major software bug here or if it's just something with my phone.
Easiest way to test is to start with a fresh reboot with GPS toggle on, install Spare Parts, plug in the phone for a second (to reset the counters), let it sit sleeping for a few minutes, then read the Running % in Spare Parts. Should be pretty low. Plug in the phone to reset the counters again. Then start Google Maps or any other program that will activate your GPS. Close that program and then let the phone sit idle for a few minutes. Check Spare Parts running time again and, for me, it's pegged at 100%.
It stays like that until I toggle the GPS off or reboot the phone.
Very curious to see if others get the same results.

I'm not trying to flame... but, after 12 hours your phone was unplugged, and still working... battery drain doesn't seem like a huge issue for me based on this information.
I would recommend an app called Tasker. I use it to turn gps off when it's not in use. I open google maps, gps starts. I close maps, gps off. I put my phone into the car mount, bluetooth starts, gps on, pandora on. unplug it, then everything off. I can have the cell radio off at night, but come on every 30 minutes to check for sms, email or whatever. I have Wifi turn on automatically when I get home, based on gps of course, and when I get out of the car, gps turns off and wifi turns on.
It saves a ton of battery for me, and might be something you'd appreciate. I have my phone running on performance mode all the time, and it still lasts all day and has 30+% to spare when I go to sleep. I'm a heavy user. almost 4GB of data this month with no tether.
That's not really the point.
The point is that there's potentially a bug with the phone that's not allowing the phone to go into sleep mode.
Seems like that might be a pretty important thing.
Point blank, the Droid X is one of the only Androids who last more than on day on the same charge! And what you all don't know is that if you use the blk taskbar and services.jar V.8 from teenfaces you will literally double or triple your life!
I have been unplugged for about 7 hrs and still have a sturdy 70%. All this with a normal discharge rate of about 5% every hour! That'd not bad! But then you have ATK set to aggressive... then the batt manager set to smart then cache mate running at full blast clearing caches every half hour. Plus the apps are killed and shut down when te screen ia off! So technically the X is dead till you power it up!
Take a look... I promise many will agree, that is if they did it right and are using V8.
Sent from my DROIDX via Telepathic DLNA.
What in the world is services.jar V.8 from teenfaces?
Ok, so then both of you are saying that the fact that the phone doesn't ever go to sleep once the GPS has been activated (even after the program that did so exists), isn't an issue?
Seems to me that you can only further improve battery life by having the phone sleep when it's not being used.
But who am I to argue I guess.
Seems like you dint understand my previous post. There is mod to change the task bar and shade. Like V8 is the latest with the services.jar replacment. Now how this affected my batt life i don't know, but, it did.
Now i see a lil longer batt life than with the original items.

Lol yea. Im gonna head home and try what ur saying. I use tasker for turning wifi on and off for maps and the new google places thing (because most of the time im in buildings) but maybe i should use it for gps too. My friend with the evo has his turned off all the time he says its a huge battery drainer. I say how could that be if it only runs when the icon is up. But this might just explain that as well.
Also other logging programs might keep it awak but this one ur suggesting doesn't i take it. Good to keep in mind. Will update later today

Sorry, I guess I'm lost/confused.
No one really has a concern that this is a potential system problem that's causing excess battery drain?
I do we still don't have an extended battery im very curious to what we can do with the battery life. If this is true id imgine tasker is the way we would go around fixing it. But went we getting 2.2 next week? Maybe that will fix it. Like i said when i get home im going to try what u said when i get home

Just noticed something, I formated my phone just today. (for some reason i had to activate again. is that normal never had to do that with my WM phone when i would put roms on it and stuff)
During setup it asked if i wanted to share anymous location info to google, which i know the fist time i said yes (actually maybe the guy at verizon said yes for me) in any case it says under it something "will anonymously collect your location data even if a location app isn't running"
which could explain why it stays on when the gps is on
if you can go into your system settings and it's on for you try turning it off and see if then leaving the gps switched on will still keep the phone on.

I think that's the option in settings->privacy, which I turned off the other day, so I don't think that's it.
Good find. Seeing the same thing. Repeated your test, and yep, system stays on till gps is bounced.
Certainly doesn't look right. Is it that once satellite fix is established, it's maintained (even if not used)? And on GPS on/off, the fix is lost and the system forgets about GPS till it's actually called?
Next step would be to see how it affects power consumption. Will try to run some more tests later in the day.
Is there an easy way to test power drain? it'll be very interesting to see what effect this is really having.

Unfortunately with the Droid X only showing battery power in 10%, it's not easy to discern small differences without waiting for hours.
I wonder if looking at the voltage would offer more precision. But, not sure how reliable that is. After all, if it was, why wouldn't the 3rd party battery meters use that to show more precise % readings.

You'd actually have to write an event for every single percent in the Android system for anything to detect the battery much more accurately and Motorola is too lazy to do that. Its only gonna show every 10% because thats what Android was programmed to show.
just an update, i said no to google doing it's data mining off my gps. but then i found in location, when i check "use wifi" it asked me again. My guess is thats how they know where you are when you turn on wifi, because if you want that feature you also have to be used in mining data of where the wifipoints are physically located.
So maybe that has something to do with it.
Saw this on Android Central Yesterday.
I can confirm it, when used with fancy widget. When standard weather app is used, no major power drain. Fancy widget seems to pin the GPS and run it hard the entire time.

I would think that if Android had 1% events some app would take advantage of it (there are certainly plenty of battery monitors in Market). But I don't know of any that show anything other than 10%. The HTC phones do 1%, and the battery widgets on HTC phones show likewise. Must be a Motorola implementation limitation.

Overheating and battery life.

I don't know what all your experiences are, but I noticed the past few days that my epic is getting hot on the back.
I also noticed that my battery is draining more so than usual. When I got the update last week my battery life sucked, but now since this overheat thing it's gotten worse. It drops a lot even when in standby.
I do not have gps, wifi, anything else on. I am not rooted. Didn't do any battery tweaks. This is completely stock di18.
This is normal use with 3g. It's getting annoying and I'm hoping someone has an answer. Thanks!
Do you have any email accounts configured in the mail application?
This happened once or twice - I rebooted the phone and all was peachy.
Sounds like you have a rogue process wearin it out.
Yeah my phone overheated yesterday while charging....this phone has a few more steps to go before it really beats my hero...

I partly found out what the problem was, but it seems you guys are ahead of me. I had some process keeping my CPU running at 95-100% nonstop. I still haven't figured out what the process was, as now it is back to the normal 5-15%, but I'll have to keep an eye on it now.
the task manager widget turns red and it shows you what process was causing it...for me it was the xda app...a few times.
I think my problem was not backing out of WordFeud. I didn't notice anything on the task manager though. Hasn't happened since that one time.
this happens to me when i'm plugged in and using gmail. screen flickers and then shuts off. the screen-off battery indicator shows the batt. gauge and a little thermometer sign next to it indicating it's too hot.
wtf?!?! this has to be a defect. anyway, is there any official word on this? any pr from sammy/sprint?
i have read elsewhere about some epics resetting themselves a few times a day which could indicate an issue with heating (at least on a pc). so if you think it might be hardware its possible. otherwise keep doing what your doing, monitor your processes for anything thats eating it up, go to about phone > battery use > cell standby to see your time without signal. the higher this is the more battery use. also, might want to consider a startup manager to prevent the 2 DRM files (search forums) from running as this can affect batt life too
you can also use setcpu even (free on here, search it) to throttle your cpu down when it hits a certain temp.
This is very interesting... My wife and I both have this phone, she has had this happen several times after the last update (I though she was just crazy). Me on the other hand... No problem!
I need to look into this a little deeper.
The only time my epic's battery gets hot is during heavy use or gps. Gps/Nav makes it heat up like a mofo. But other than that... *knocks on wood* Its all good, no problems. As far at battery life, I am rooted and using SetCPU to turn down the processor while the screen is off, helps a ton. Not using anything other than that... was using juicedefender but then I started not getting calls or text...

One thing, I learned, that didn't help my battery was putting my phone in the locker at work. That thing must have killed my TWS and ate my battery alive.
i feel like this thread will start to die but i had a weird somewhat related issue last night. i too have had maybe 3-4 times where i woke up to my charging phone with the red LED and a screen that would not turn on, battery pull, worked fine.
however, THIS morning my phone would freeze like 30 seconds after boot EVERY time. tried a few things to no avail until I wiped, reinstalled my ROM (aosp 0.4.1) and the data from a previous backup (which was the way i got that ROM to first boot successfully according to tips in that thread).
so this worked, but i couldnt figure out why my other steps wouldnt. had to be something in the data partition of my system at the time, since changing that worked. the only thing i could think of is that app watchdog which someone mentioned to track processor usage by apps. anyone else ever experience this?
I have experienced this once when I was playing Robodefense while the phone was charging. My phone tends to get a little warm when it charges, and hot if I run something intensive while its charging. Wondering if this will be an issue when I use this phone for GPS nav while plugged into my car.

"I'm having this problem too...I didn't get any warranty for this either. Any reasons onto why this is happening...I woke up this morning and picked up my burning phone lol the temp was at 50C so I took out the battery and let it sit for 15 mins...it went down to 30C, then after not touching it for another 15..it was at 17C...very odd...what should I do, this crap is going to die within the next hour I'm worried it will fry the hard drive or something. Need help! " - I wrote this on a diff. forum a couple days ago
I dont have anything on, no wifi, gps, or any 4g (lol only if I could find it)...I even got rid of my facebook/twitter/weather updater widgets. The only thing that updates is email, and that's only if I click on it. The battery has been dying a lot faster and I charge my phone next to the window now because its like 20 degrees outside here in Chicago, so that brings down my phones temp lol....and today, my phone's battery life went from 100 to 5 percent in about three hours of barely using it...wtf?!
Also, another problem...sometimes when I lock my phone and unlock it after taking it out my pocket or something, the screen doesn't seem to respond...I keep swiping my finger over it to put in my password and it wont do anything and it only works when I slide up my phone for the horizontal view. This happens like 4 out of every 10 times I open phone.
Very embarrassing especially if your trying to get someones number down, I stopped showing off the phone now ...lol

SGS2 Awake time

When I look at my battery usage I saw that my S2 is constantly awake, even when I turn the screen off and put the phone away for a couple of hours.
I've turned off Wifi/3G and even background sync, but it stays awake all the time causing the battery to drain a lot faster than I want. Is there a way to stop this?
I hear people talking about theirs dropping only a couple percent per hour when not using the phone but mine at least drains 10% per hour.
Could it be the Social Hub?
Btw, my S2 runs on the latest KE2 firmware.
For me, I've noticed a big decrease in idle-battery draining when I rooted and removed Social Hub and I never even used it. It still stays "awake" as much as it did before on the little lines in the battery usage app, but a lot more juice.
Used to lose 10% per hour like you, now more like 5%.
If it stays awake all the time, something is _wrong_. If I don't use my phone the only awake time I can see in the battery status is every 15 mins (approx) when it goes "awake" a couple of seconds to update all the **** I have updating. It never stays awake all the time.
edit:
And just to give some more info. Mine is still stock on KE2 with all the crap Samsung put in the phone still in place.

sorry for highjacking your thread, but how do you guys get all this awake battery time info, is there a particular app you guys use.?

I think I experienced the same thing this night. I lost about 10% in 7 hours but the graph still showed that my phone was awake all the time.
Again, I turned the Wifi and 3G off. I'm still running the stock KE2 firmware together with all the Samsung apps. I haven't rooted it yet.
Also, Maps and Social Hub seemed to be active a lot when I look at their stay awake times.
bump.
to much awake time here as well.
how can i find out whats causing it?
I'd put money on it being widgets. Remove all the widgets from home screens, restart the phone and see if that fixes it. You can thank me later ;-)

try watchdog, or adb logcat
I have this problem from time to time, killing wifi sharing stopped it for me. Comes back once a day for no reason I can see. 1 Kill a day keeps the phone last a full day for me.

Yeah I also see the occasional WTF moment when the phone suddenly decides in the middle of the day to stay awake 100% of the time. Battery then drains about the same 5-10% an hour you see. Not sure what causes it but a reboot usually fixes it, battery drain goes back to 0.5%-2% an hour that it usually sits at.
Sometimes I also see wifi sharing eating a constant ~50% of CPU, at which point battery drains more like 25% an hour, though not sure if it's related. If only I could disable the damn thing without rooting.
I also have this weird problem. My 2g data connection remains on because I receive a lot of emails so Ive enabled push notifications. However the problem is even when the screen is off, the phone stays awake 100% of the time.
I went to sleep after completely charging the phone at around 11pm and when I woke up at around 9 am, the battery was at 30%. That is 70% battery gone for not doing anything at all. Really need a solution for this guys. Or should I just turn off my data connection?
i had this prob with Widgetsoid installed.
Problem gone when i removed it.
Find on XDA BetterBatteryStats app.. Use phone for a while then run app. Check detected wakelocks. Based on that you can hunt which app or widget keep device always on.
Phone works normally if you compare Screen On and Awake graphs. Both graphs should match. Awake periods can be sometimes be out of screen-on intervals, but no too often.
In my case, I found that maps keep my phone awake.. then I figired that weather widget kep tracking my location (and uses maps for this). Also Lattitude uses maps to track location. When I configure weather widget to not track my location (im usually always in a home town) and turn off latitude, lots of awake periods dissaperar.
