ok so i followed the directions on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823522
and changed my lcd density to 200. pretty cool. i was looking for a way to make the text smaller, anyway. pretty neat. however, i use the circle launcher widgets, and any launchers on the bottom or sides of the homepages now only show a sliver of the app/bookmark/contact/whatever icon and wont work. the launchers in the middle for some reason cram everything to one side of the circle. and the launcher and the circle it launches are no longer concentric. so i figured, eh whatever ill just change it back to the stock 240. except now root explorer will no longer let me mount the /system file as r/w for some odd reason. i have a permrooted s-off tmobile g2. no custom roms, just the 1.42ghz kernel. i dont know what to do. i was gonna follow the adb method but i started getting error messages and decided to leave it alone. a friend of a friend is an android enthusiast as well, and knows a lot more about all of this than i do and i plan on getting in touch with her tomorrow or so. just thought id see if anyone had any thoughts or pointers. i dunno what i did wrong. and im sure theres a lot of helpful info ive left out. any questions or help would be greatly appreciated.

yeah nevermind i found another post that helped. got it mounted as r/w through terminal emulator. im a dummy.

How do I "completely" remove Sense/Rosie from FreshToast 1.1?

I have so far only deleted Rosie.apk and all of the HTC widgets.
I do not like the AOSP look of say... DarchDroid, I like the HTC touches here and there, but without Sense UI.
I'm getting Force Closes now. I can't find the apk associated with the FC'es.

im not sure, but didnt you just answer your own question? im probably wrong, but i think thats it. use root explorer and go on a deleting spree...
I wish it were that easy! lol
I searched all the directories for that file (com.htc.rosieutility) and its nowhere to be found.
I actually searched for *rosie* and all it came up with was:
/sdcard/rosie_scroll
/sdcard/download/Rosie_Icons.zip
Jesus ive searched the phone high and low. I am so ****ing lost. I dont know wtf is going on here.
was your search global? it seems you only searched your sd card...
why not just leave rosie and use helix? seems to me itd be the most stable.
The rom without rosie is very stable.. The only issue you will have is when you boot up, youll have 1 force close. After that the only time it comes up is if you are downloading something from the market. Which it doesnt even always come up.
For the most part the force close doesnt even mean much. I just got used to it being there. I never cared to look into it. But i will now.
Edit: also comes up when uninstalling something. but i dont do that much
Have you tried deleting
HtcAddProgramWidget.apk
hey fyi ic3 is completely aosp, and has fixed the utility issue. check his thread out, ppl seem satisfied.
Im pretty sure i figured it out
delete these
HtcAddProgramWidget.apk <-- If you havent already
com.android.launcher2.apk <-- I think this is what did it
I read the ice rom thread and all he did was use an older version of Launcher, so I just deleted it and rebooted without getting a force close (first time its worked)
I think that did it!
Sweet!
Yeah, I was getting the one FC at boot, and sometimes in the market, but I was also getting it while in the browser, sometimes in People, other times just at random.
I am using Helix.
So far so good.
Thank you!!!

I tried ic3....
I'm just not a fan of completely AOSP. I like the touch of HTC apps here and there.
I'm slowly getting FreshToast exactly how I want it.
Its super fast, and getting more and more stable even with JIT.
The only other thing I'm trying to narrow down is this memory leak type issue.
Sometimes with NO active running services or apps, the available RAM will drop as low as 55MB, then withing a few minutes I'll check it and it'll go back up to 70-80MB. Doesn't seem to affect performance too much, and I'm COMPLETELY taking a stab in the dark here but maybe has something to do with JIT?
I dunno. I'm going to try and disable JIT and see if the available RAM stays in the 60-70 range.
I just removed the HTC Mms.apk with the AOSP Mms.apk to try and cut back on keyboard lag.
I tried going with the AOSP/standard keyboard... I think ive just been typing on the HTC_IME keyboard for way too long that my muscle memory has been trained to it. I keep screwing up with the vanialla keyboard. Also the spell correct doesn't seem to work as well as it does the HTC keyboard. I have no vibration or sound, as well as no key preview to try and cut back on lag.
It seems that the actual spell correction is what is lagging the keyboard down so bad. If I turn off all spell correct/auto complete it seems to be much snappier.

it sounds like compcache is working
So is the memory increase a result of compcache compressing the data to the ramz swap space? Or the opposite? Ive been reading on google code about compcache and of course, I cant wrap my redneck head around it.
I seem to def. like this better than autokiller. ROMs with autokiller seem to kill active running apps too much, especially with the browser if there were a few flash ads on the site. It would just randomly close.
The only thing I'm doing now is going through the com.htc.resources.apk and changing the green to blue. I'm hoping its easy enough of just editing the pngs to blue. Im sure though, somewhere Im going to have to edit some xml files somewhere that have a color hex associated with it. Im just not a fan of green, and am getting sick of it hah. I like blue
is there any way you can compile a signed update that i can flash, that is exactly what you have, Fresh Toast 1.1 with no Sense and JIT enabled..?
I'd be more than happy to, if I knew how to!
I assume it would just be an update script, but i've never done that before.

Just make a nandroid of your rom.. Dont include the ext partition. And maybe delete some personal stuff. lol
You could make a nandroid.. Then boot up again, delete all personal stuff and sign out of everything. Make another nandroid (the one you can send to people). And then flash back to your nandroid of all your personal stuff back on it.
I think it would be easier to just make a tutorial as I didn't really do anything that hard. Just removed some files here, replaced some there, and re-configure some stuff.
As a matter of fact it may be easier to just zip a bunch of files, and make a batch file to do it, as pretty much everything was done through ADB.
I don't like the idea of nandroid, wouldn't want to accidents include some paid app, or risk personal data getting in there.
Actually I'm going to read up on making update zips. Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

[Q] New User New Shift

Hi Im a new user at this site, Been scouring the internet since monday looking into evo shift stuff and came across this site. This site is awesome and I love how the threads are based off phone and not just software or carrier like other phones which makes forums messy as heck.
Btw I am new to andriod software
K here is my question..
What should I do with my Evo Shift 4G ?
My time searching I have came across stuff like "root" - "ADW Launcher" "wimix keys"
First off I know what root is, Its like jail breaking I heard, Is it suggested I do this?
Also what is this wimix keys or another , wmix keys or something that I hear alot of people talking about when rooting?... What information is that holding and why is it so important to back em up?
Also If I where to root would I have to worry about any applications running like Lookout and Advance task killer?
So I guess in all, What do you recommend I do with my Evo Shift to spoof it up abit.

First, let me preface this by saying that congratulations on purchasing the best phone in the current sprint lineup. How are you liking it so far?
In response to your first question, I don't think I, or anyone else for that matter, am qualified to tell you what to do with your phone. The best I can do is give you a list of pro's and con's and be helpful and polite in answering questions you may have.
Rooting is like jailbreaking an iPhone in that it gives you administrative access to your phone. Unlike the iPhone, Android is open-source and hacker friendly, which means that rooting your Shift also allows you to do things like install custom versions of Android (ROMs), apply themes over current versions of android, and use apps that require root access.
That being said, there are some downsides to rooting your phone. Obviously, it voids both HTC's and Sprint's warranties for the phone. This means that while your phone is rooted, you can not take it to a sprint store and get it replaced or repaired. Also, rooting is a somewhat delicate procedure and if you make a mistake in the process, you will be left with a $549 paperweight.
Furthermore, please read through the forums BEFORE rooting and if you have any questions about the process, please ask. Were here to help.
In response to your other questions, ADW Launcher is simply a replacement launcher (the program that comes up when you press the home button). It does not require root and if you're curious about it, you can download it from the android market for free and play around with it.
Wimax is Sprint's 4g service. Without Wimax keys, the Shift cannot connect to 4g. The custom recovery that is available on the shift does not back them up, so when you use the restore function in recovery mode, you will lose them, unless you back them up to your SD card (which is one of the steps in the rooting process).
Lastly, Because of the way that the Android OS utilizes RAM, task killing apps are usually frowned upon. Killing background tasks does not result in a noticeable increase in speed or benchmarks and uses more battery restarting vital apps than it saves when they're not running.
There is an app for root users that does help though, its called Cache Cleaner and is available for free on the market. Instead of force stopping background processes, it periodically clears up space in your cache (which is comparable to deleting your web history, cookies, and cache in your internet browser at home in order to make videos and webpages load faster).
I hope this post was helpful and I apologize for the length. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Well first off, length on post doesnt matter to me, I thank you for a quality post.
So in a nutshell wifimax or wimax are files thare are essential for the 4g connection when it is present in your area. For me we dont have 4g yet. So if I where to ROOT I would need to back these files up, because if I dont, I lose the option to have 4g and then basically I am jacked?
I tried ADW Launcher and I dont see whats so special about it, With the HTC Sense option to have different scenes,I dont see a reason to really mess with it.. I just got it so maybe Im not bored yet with the flipping options and theme yet.
If it matters I have experience flashing PSP with a custom firmware if that helps any with rooting.
I have came across many apps in my 3 days owning this phone, Amazing stuff out there. Stuff from barcode scanners, Scan2PDF,AngryBirds,EasyTether,etc.. I feel like there are other apps out there Im missing that I would love.
So your saying get rid of the advance task manager and run that cache cleaner instead?.. Does it accomplish the same thing in a nut shell?
Thanks for any help, it is appreciated
I would also give Launcher Pro a chance, its free unless you want the Launcher Pro Widgets which give you simular to Sense Widgets (Calendar, Messaging...ect) I prefer it to ADW because its incredibly smooth in comparision.
Task killers are generally bad on android period. Cache cleaner just clears temp files.
If you feel you must run a task killer, don't set it to ruin continuously, and only use it kill single apps that lock up or wake lock the phone. Which - by the way, has not happened to me in the month I owned this phone. It was a daily occurence seemingly on my old hero
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
I found that by checking out the top apps in various categories, I started learning a lot about the capabilities of the phone. Oh, and go through the settings menu.
Enjoy your Shift! Root and read the forums, well worth the time.
My #1 recommended "maintenance" app, free in the Market:
Android Assistant
-cache cleaner already built in, as well as "quick boost", which will clean up unnecessary background apps. You can even tweak it to run periodically. Additionally, you can access sound settings, and there are a wide variety of efficiencies in the tools menu. Battery level, current RAM usage....too many things to mention. Needless to say, I went from using AutoKiller, Quick Settings, and numerous toggle widgets to just using this app, and enabling access in the notification bar. Haven't looked back since.
I agree with you about ADW but I too am new and perhaps didn't give it a chance. On the other hand I love Launcher Pro. has a tendancy to FC (force close) every now and then but it is very customizable. On a side note I saw something in the works for SPB shell I think it's called and it looks very promising.

[ROM] Nils' Business GingerSense 3.5 - GB 2.3.5 - (11/13/11 v2.2)

Can't post in the right forum yet, maybe I should talk about the weather or something? Or maybe even a mod can move it over there.
Anyways, I cracked the screen on my first Incredible, doing a backup was worthless compared to my Treo as it didn't backup everything. So I rooted it and my new phone and did a nandroid backup. Lo and behold Gingerbread arrives and I can't update since I have clockworkmod still installed.
I'm out of warranty as it is so thought I'd go the ROM route and see whats out there. As such I've installed Nils' Business GingerSense 3.5 - GB 2.3.5 - (11/13/11 v2.2) and have been pretty happy with it except for a few odd quirks.
For one, I can't read the text for some of the apps in my notification screen, Lookout is a dark grey and the weather is completely black. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere? If I use a pattern lock screen, there's some extraneous lettering above the pattern box. And yeah, the preview screen doesn't work for wallpapers and such, neither in the HTC hub area.
Sometimes upon first unlocking if I swipe the screen, it does a full 360 through all the home screens. It also looks like this ROM is based on 4.06 and not the newer 4.08, would this fix some issues?
I do like Sense 3.5 so I think I'll be sticking around with this one and stuck here till I get enough posts in.
Hello hello,
Glad you rooted your Incredible, trust me you aren't missing anything in the way of features if you were on Verizon's stock GB update. The XDA community is literally MONTHS ahead of that haha but you can always unroot and wait for Verizon's OTA prompt if you desire but alas...
1) There is not a setting to change the notification bar's color. I have the same "feature"/problem as well. I just deal with it, not ideal I know, I just prefer launching into whichever app once I know the notification is there. Maybe try your hand with using the android kitchen that Nils has linked in post #3 of that thread. Also, I would suggest sending Nils a pm if nobody in the community has a solution for this. Sorry I can't help you any further but just everyone who uses the rom has the same all black notification bar. I like it cuz it sort of acts as a security blanket as nobody can view the notification's content.
2) As for the pattern lock labeling, I am not aware of a solution but I have heard this occurring on other Sense 3.5 roms. I do not have a solution simply cuz I prefer using the pin code which is more secure. Again, hopefully someone has a fix for this if there is one.
3) Wallpapers: you must hit "Menu" then select "Grid." That is addressed in post #2 of the thread.
4) The unlock spin is actually a function introduced with HTC Sense 3.5 and it effectively serves no person, rhyme, or reason. This should be disabled by going to Settings/Incredible Tweaks/Display Options and uncheck "Enable Unlock Animation." However, you cannot disable the spinning animation if you move through your homescreens too fast (i.e. flick your finger left/right quickly) as that's built into HTC Sense 3.5.
5) The 4.06.501 vs. 4.08.501 differences are moreso software (non-UI) fixes. The rom is based off of a different phone so your issues derive from the base that NilsP utilizes and the way he customized the rom. Don't get too hung up over the differences as it is inconsequential. The version of Android is more vital as Google incorporates fixes that you may/may not notice.
6) Not sure if you're aware but XDA has a ten post limit before allowing users to comment in the development section. Just post a few more comments and try helping others and you'll be at the minimum in no time.
Thanks for the heads up on the notification bar, I hadn't read anything elsewhere about it so I thought it was something I wasn't aware of for a fix. I actually thought of sending a PM, but wasn't sure if I was locked out of that also being a noob poster. (yep, read about the 10 post pre-qualification, how about this weather were having?)
Odd, I just pulled down my notification bar and my weather text now shows up in white, Lookout is still in a dark grey though.
I'm not worried about the pattern lock, I used to use it when it first came out, not so much anymore, was just playing around with different things. I didn't want to install a bunch of stuff and then have to do it all over again if I installed another ROM (I had 104 apps on it beforehand, did I mention android backups suck?).
Yep, did read about the wallpaper issue, I just put it in there for some odd reason.
Unlock spin? Or left/right swipe? Currently I pull the ring up to unlock the screen, and I did get that zoom in animations. But sometimes, like 1/20 times, swiping to the right (or was it left?) it will spin through all the screens and stop on the middle one. And I didn't think I had swiped it that fast, I just tried it, and I see what your saying if you swipe it fast. Maybe I did swipe it fast after unlocking, but it usually surprises when it does it so I must be thinking I didn't swipe it that fast. It only seems to do it right after unlocking though, other times it just does the one screen at a time.
Ok on the 4.06-4.08 issue then, I just read that the OTA 4.06 was real buggy and 4.08 fixed a lot of issues. I didn't get the OTA notice till about 3 weeks ago and didn't investigate as to why it wasn't taking until last week.
I'm trying the V6 Supercharger next as sense reloads after I exit some applications, not always, but enough times to be annoying.
My contract is up in mid January, most likely will be looking into a new phone then and ICS.
Oh yea, go ahead and send a pm if you ever need assistance. I'm sure that is open to every user regardless of post count. Best part is, NilsP is a very responsive dev so I'm confident he'll help you out if you post in any of his threads or send a pm.
That is odd but hopefully someone can assist with the notification bar color. I agree with you about checking for bugs in a rom, it is an investment since you want "stable" and "working 100%" the moment you install a rom. When you run the V6 script working bulletproof the launcher. Ever since I bulletproofed the launcher I haven't had an HTC Sense reload in weeks and it works great. I have the same idea as well, I'm likely purchasing the Nexus this spring.
Thanks, ill send him one when I get a chance, getting pulled in a couple directions at the moment (shouldn't even be typing this!)
Man, that V6 install takes a lot! Dependent on other things installed which are also dependent on other things installed, have my work cut out for that!
I installed battery minder last night (one of the few I found that says how many hours I have left) and it's the same thing in the notification screen, black and dark grey text. Lighter grey then Lookout though.
I'd even wait on an upgrade a little, but my compass isn't working right, skymap has me moving all over the place. I forget what HTC is coming out with 2012, I'm sure things will keep going crazy.

Either flash a Sense 3.5 rom and use the stock HTC music player app OR purchase a new HTC phone.
If you want to try the Gingerbread OTA release, you can flash Stock Plus Gingerbread. The ROM is almost completely stock, with a few fixes and a little bit of the bloat removed. Also, you won't lose root as you would with the update installed OTA.

[Q] Basic Walkthrough on How to Customize your GT-6810?

Ok. I'm VERY green when it comes to anything Android. I'm a recent Apple converter!
I'm just getting used to how things are with Android and I'm anxious to understand what the capabilities are after you've rooted your tablet.
I "jailbroke" my iPad 2, so I'm familiar with what the idea is of "rooting" I suppose. Problem is, I can't seem to find anything available for the GT-6810 (wifi only) version of the Galaxy Tab 7.7
I "rooted" the device and installed Superuser. Now what? How do I start customizing and making this tablet run smoother / faster?
I'm sorry if there's 1000 questions like this, but I really am trying to learn and google hasn't helped me much other than to direct me to this site
Hope you all can help shed some light on a few of my questions.
I also came from an iPad2 but this is an ideal size for me. As more people acquire the 7.7 more Devs will come on board and develop Roms. Nothing available at the moment but they will come. Mine is rooted also with CWM and ready to flash the first Rom for the 6810. Am running a few rooted apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, Cache Cleaner NG, Mobile Odin and Honeybar etc. Have a look around the Sub Forums on XDA with other Tabs and android phones and see whats happening. Enjoy your Tab.
I have the P6800, but no matter, I'll get you a tutorial up in a little bit. In the mean time, have a look at me messing around with my 7.7 on ADW EX! Check out my other videos too!
I'll post a tutorial on how to get your 7.7 (WiFi and/or 3G) working as smoothly as that soon!
really look forward with your tutorial Jade Eyed Wolf
wow that video looks awesome! it'd be wonderful to see a walkthrough on how you did that ...
Right now I'm running into a problem though. I tried to wipe and restore to default and after the wipe, I go through the initial setup where I select United States + English, then setup wifi and confirm google settings and I get an error that shows ...
Sorry!
The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I get only two options, force close and report.
I would post a picture of the message but this site won't let me because I'm new.
How do I fix this?
Just got my 6800. Gorgeous screen.
I've rooted, and apparently flashed CVM recovery via Odin (I'm downoload a tweaded ROM now, but the server is so slow, will open in 2hs..).
However, I can't seem to boot into CVM. The combination seemed to change a bit since I flashed root, and I can't figure out which is which.
1. Stock tablet, to get into stock recovery, power button+vol. up. Then let go power when you see the logo. Easy.
2. After root, the way to get into stock recovery is not volume+up, now it's volume down? Why? Am I wrong?
3. After CVM, all bets are off. I tired power+vol up; power+vol down; nothing. I'm stuck at this point. I'll figure out soon I hope.
Edit: never mind, I must have been doing something wrong. Power+vol down is stock, Power+vol up is CVM.
Cheers,
The wait is over!
Thanks so much Jade!
Does anyone have any recommendations for some cool or useful apps, paid or free?
What about any "bloatware" on the 7.7 that can be removed to make the device run faster or make space? Are any of the widgets or programs on the 7.7 known for slowing down the tablet and shouldn't be used?

[Q]ICS!?!?

So i havent hit these forums in a while. The other day i checked out the forum just to see if anything ICS related has happened, and well it did. I got to reading, and it seems that i cant make heads or tails on how to get it on my tab.
Anyway, right now im running 3.2, and i have Clockwork mod 5 installed. Can i just download a rom and flash it, or is it going to be more complicated than that?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517181
That's what I use. Just download, flash, and enjoy.
Am i going to have to use that weird gold ring ****? (id rather not...)
It's a button on the taskbar. You don't need to tap on it if you don't want to. Besides, there are alternative looks for it further down if you want to change it.

If you don't want to use it at all, just disable it in the settings.
If you want it to look different, flash one of the numerous alternate themes provided.
If you still don't like the look, pull the needed apks from the tablet, decompile them, edit the graphics to suit your needs, recompile them, resign them, push them back to your tablet.
