Voice Quality - Nexus S General

My voice quality is awful to my callers. They think I'm on speaker phone. After a month of using this phone with this issue I exchanged it. Same result so I've dealt with it by using a Plantronics Pro which sounds decent. The problem is when I'm without a headset and I have to use the phone normally. People continuously tell me that they can not understand me.
Is everyone's NS microphone quality dismal?
My instinct tells me that it's the noise cancellation processing more than the microphone. When I leave quality test voicemails for myself in my house, it doesn't sound aweful but everywhere else people simply can not understand me without a headset!
Any ideas? Do you face this? Will an OS upgrade help?
OS 2.3.2

I honestly recommend upgrading by rooting and getting the nscollab rom and flashing the new radio as well

I get told this all the time and it pisses me off so bad. I came from the n1 so I am used to having great call quality. As I understand it, the problem is due to the lack of a dedicated noise cancelling microphone and there isn't much we can do about it unless the genius devs can somehow enhance the software noise cancellation. I am rooted and using cm7 with kb3 radio.

When the nexus s was first released there were topics complaining on this issue. Don't think there is a fix, its just the way it is. Root prob helps I bet, but I think its just Samsung Mic quality or the software noise cancel function.

Yup. I know I was one of those criticizing the vq on the nexus s on launch day. There is no real fix, if you depend on using your phone in noisy outdoor areas the nexus s is a massive downgrade from the nexus one or really any decent phone.

Same problem as the Samsung Galaxy S.
Supercurio fixed the mic saturation during videorecording for the Galaxy S. I tweetet him yesterday if he is planing to fix it also for phone calls and he answered following:
@Bajo76 you mean voice&noise saturation in loud environments during calls? Next Voodoo sound vers. will introduce call-related improvements.

That is good to hear. While Voodoo sure has improved call quality, such problem still lingers from time to time.

Increase call volume

I'm sure I'm not the only frustrated with the uunusually low maximum call volume for the g2 which makes conversations in crowded places pretty difficult. I just wanted to know if this is something that can be fixed with an ota update or root, or are we stuck with this limitation? Thanks in advance

This is something I would like to know as well. I think that's the only thing bothering me about this phone now that Paul Obrian's awesome VISONary app is installed. The speaker is pretty low too.

I agree as well. The in-call voice volume is pretty low, and makes it pretty hard hear what the person on the other end is saying.
I know with the vibrant that there was a code you could dial, and it would take you to some more phone options. We did this to try to fix the GPS in its early stages.

Ear speaker quality not good - resonance

Hello!
Lately I bought used Galaxy S with Froyo
PDA: I9000XWJP6
PHONE: I9000XXJPM
CSC:I9000XEEJP4
Build info: 2010.10
I'm very happy about my new device but I don't like voice call quality. It seems not to be clear all the time. Very often I can hear noise around the voice and it turns into slight resonans at low caller's voice frequency. For example, imagine that speaker's membrame starts to vibrate when the voice get low. This negative effect is not constant but its often.
I'd like try it at another ROM. Which one could You recommend?
It will always be that for you.
Its not in the firmware you have.
Some sgs phone has this problem.
I got 2 phone and the voice/sound works great.

I took mine in for repair due to this issue - got it back last friday and it was fixed. Engineer's note said it was a power problem.

Voice quality issues with cm7 and miui

I'm making a new thread for this because it applies to cm7 and miui and will get buried in their threads.
Basically im assuming MIC volume is maxed out. Your own voice can feedback into the speaker when on a call. You sound distorted to the person on the other end, especially when you're not in a quiet location. Basically making the phone part of the phone un usable. I have had this happen on all cm7 miui builds.
Also speaker volume can not be changed when the screen is off
Known issue acknowledged by Uber that is somehow involved with the mic feedback resolution. They are working on it, but I have no idea when it'll be fixed. Flashing Bushido or Shadow kernel seems to help.

Having the same problem! Thought it was the replacement phone I just got but on stock 2.3, the mic sounds great.
Distortion and low mic threshold. Picks up way too much background noise.

Boost headphone audio volume?

So for my job I'm in a company vehicle most of the time and listen to podcasts through an FM transmitter, but even with the volume turned all the way up on both the phone and stereo I have a hard time hearing it. I didn't have this problem on my old phones, are there any apps or anything to fix this? DSP manager didn't do any good, running CM10..

Just noticed that it looks like this might be an issue with 4.2.2, I updated straight out of the box so didn't have anything to compare to. Any fixes?

I'm dealing with this too and it's driving me nuts. When I connect my nexus 4 via aux jack I have to max out my stereo volume
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
You happen to know if it's any different than 4.2.1?
Sent from my Nexus 4
I can't say for sure bc I don't remember if I hooked it up to the car before I updated to 4.2.2. I really hope it's a software issue and not hardware. I've searched and alot of other ppl are experiencing this issue with no fix yet. Any else have any input?

Same as you guys. I'm an avid music listener so I'm moving on to another phone. Not sure why the sound is so low. My galaxy did not have this problem.

it is definitely worth it.
So im officially happy again with my nexus 4 bc the volume issue I have been experiencing is gone thanks to Franco kernel! For anyone experiencing this problem I would highly recommend flashing CM10 and Franco kernel as well as buying the Franco kernel updater on the app store which allows you to tweak volume/gain output settings. Not to mention the color and gamma correction settings have made this display insane. Plus all your other standard tweaks are available like cpu overclocking and undervolting if you're into that kind of thing. I hope this helps!

You could root your device and replace the stock kernel with for example, Faux's new kernel or Morfic's Trinity Kernel (Use the newest releases). They've both implemented the ability to increase volume with use of Faux's app in the play store (Paid app, helps the developer and allows you to adjust how much louder or quiet you want it so hey win-win). Faux's kernel that allows extra volume is V.009 and Morfic's is Trinity TF111 <-- can be found on Simm's G+ page (Not found on the Derkenel website). Faux's kernel can be found easily by clicking his links on his thread. Hope this helps
Yea so I thought boosting headphone volume would help but now I'm just getting noticeable distortion. What a f'n joke. LG really dropped the ball. I have no complaints otherwise, but this is a big issue and it's enough to make me consider moving on to another phone unfortunately

i thought i noticed a problem last weekend when i randomly thought to listen to music using headphones, but i forgot about it until today
my 'normal' headphones are at work, but i tried some others i had in the drawer and found that the headphones i use make a BIG difference to how loudly i can hear the music...the best of the bunch (VModa) triple the volume and quality of the sound when compared to a Sony pair which results in distorted sound and very low volume
i will try my Phillips headphones at work and see if they are as good as the VModa
i also tried Franco kernel volume boost and while it does increase the volume, it distorts the sounds a lot

What really annoys me is when I plug it into my aux port in my car. The sound is so low compared to my N7 it is rediculous
can this be a hardware issue as opposed to firmware/programing ?
If your phone is rooted you could give this a shot! Worked great for me!

[Q] Noise cancellation sounds terrible

Just after getting my G2 i installed CyanogenMod 10.2 Milestone on it. I started doing some tests to see if CM could be my daily driver, and nothing really seemed to be a deal breaker, except, when i try to record videos (or I'm guessing any other sound recorder) the sound it not really that great. I went back to the stock LG software, and was hoping i only had to stay there until CM fixed the noise cancellation issue. But what do i find, the noise cancellation problem is still there.
I have been looking around here on the XDA forums, (This is my first post btw) and I came across this (what seemed like) amazing mod. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471900 But it might just be me being a droid-noob (Have only had android for 2 weeks now), but i cant figure out how to get this to work, it even bumps up the quality of pictures and videos including other cool tweaks. I have tried installing the .zip file via CWM, but that gave me nothing, also tried installing the cameraapp.apk the thread provided, but it just refused to install.
So please, if any droid-guru can help me make my microphone sound better, (both in the stock software and in CM) i would appreciate it!
Are you using some cover on the G2 ? If so, try removing it as it might cause disturbance to the reference microphone.

I do not have a cover or case, and I know the noise cancellation is software related. My phone is the D802, the one without a rear-facing microphone, maby that can have something to do with it?
I have the same problem witm my lg g2.After I record a video or use voice recorder the sound freezing and the quality is very poor.I thought that I have only my this problem...My phone is not rooted and I have it from yesterday morning.Today I sow this problem.I made a factory reset and the problem is not solved. Is something that I can do with this issue?

This is happening on stock, CM and PAC-man roms, so its not just a CM issue.
my bad, you can disable it from dialer however, it might be good reason to return your unit

I have thought about that, but I've heard a few other people have this problem as well, and im 99% sure it is software related. Though to every rule there is an exception..
Just some more info. Here is a video i recorded going home from work, and as you can hear the sounds are very "Watery" or "Distorted" as many describe it. (The bad video quality is a combination of my using CM10.2, only recording in 720P and YouTubes bitrate being bad as always)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgdtWzoQkOU&feature=youtu.be
And no, I did NOT cover up any of the microphones, im 100% sure about that.

yep, that's just this phones awful audio recording here. it's god awful. my htc rezound did the same thing, yet all the following phones i had (s3, DNA, gnex, S4) didn't do this. so it's like a 3 year old problme that LG just can't manage to fix. sigh.

Video uses the rear mic for audio zoom. Not even sure if it cancels as well like the top. Verizons model ONLY has a top. I have no distortion or watery sound when using stock recorder or on video. I however do get dead silence between some sounds, very good cancellation, sometimes a bit too much. Voice Privacy in dailer has NOTHING to do with voice cancellation. It is an algorithm used to encrypt voice communications and is worthless being hacked long ago. VS980

I have the d802, and that does not have rear mounted microphone. So maybe it is just some bad optimization. There has got to be a way to disable the noise cancelling microphone, or use it as a secondary mic.

Okay..
So basically every rom out there for the G2 has terrible sound when it comes to the microphone, but there is a fix, i'm sure!
A few weeks back i downloaded the AOSPA 4 rom for the G2 and installed it, and guess what, it removed the noise cancellation!
But after the rom was buggy here and there, I decided to live with the bad sound on CM 10.2.
Now a few weeks has gone by, and I wanted to try out the updated AOSPA 4 rom, but what is diz, the sound is terrible!?
So it seems like the whoever is in charge of the AOSPA rom for the G2 has brought back the horrible sound.
Now is there a way to get the microphone profiles from one rom over to another? I have the old AOSPA 4 rom, with the working sound on my computer, and I want to take the microphone profile, and save it, so that i can manually add it to any other rom i download in the future, because I know that roms like CM probably wont update the mic profile for one specific phone.
Hey there, I just got myself LG G2 D802 and I find the noise cancellation in videos to be extremely annoying. Do you guys know if there is a fix to it yet? Something to disable it would be awesome.
bump
Might be a HW fault or y'all are being too sensitive videos recorded with my D802 have great sound.

In the first second you can hear 'normal' sound, then it goes down. You can hear my voice very well, so the quality of it is fine, but then you can't hear very well the scratching sounds (it cuts in and out).
And here is a source file: CLICK
Could it be really a hardware issue? Should I return the phone?
Bumping this in hopes there's been some progress on this subject? I returned two Lg G2's due rto this issue, so its definitely an issue with the phone. Thanks
