Probably RoyalGinger due to it's smartass governor/kernel. And because it's AOSP.

is it worth rooting to get royal ginger? I rooted my Droid 1, and loved it, but so far i havent really had a problem with with the stock rom, but im starting to itch to root. How did you root yours? The gfree method? I tried using the visionary way but it didnt work. I just have it temp rooted right now and im running setcpu which kinda helps my battery life.

This guide is a great way to truly root your phone, and it has support in multiple threads on how to unroot if you should choose. Be careful with the terminal stuff, double and triple check your commands before entering them. Deving takes me away from Royal Ginger a lot, but the battery life is great on that ROM and it was my daily driver. My advice, try them all out and run them all for a few days. There are some incredible ROMS out now, so give them all a chance. You may find that you like Ginger, or you may be a fan of CM7, just find what works for you.

This is a loaded question. Different people will have different experiences with various ROMS. It all depends on how you clock your phone, do you have data turned on, do you leave auto sync on, do you leave wifi on and roam in and out of wifi areas. How many emails do you get a day, do you use just gmail, or do you have outlook, do you have yahoo. Can you leave facebook go for more than a nano second... they are many options that can play into battery life.
If you want flat out "BEST" battery life. I drop about 1% of battery per 2.5 hours running Cyanogen(mod), when i have wi-fi, BT, Auto Sync and Data all turned off, and clocked to about 800Mhrz.

Cyanogen(mod) it's the best it bare bones stock. But like they said it all depends on how you use it and what do you have running I've flashed 3 roms with doing backups and everything with no charge from 630 till now 742 while using evening my phone can put out (facebook, email, web, talk, and text all day) and is at 3% clocked at 1.3Ghz

[Q] ROM with best battery life?

Hi there. There seems to be a number of tweaked ROM's for the Aria and unfortunately, I'm not tech savvy enough to understand the different kernels. From your personal experience, which ROM gave good battery life on the Aria?
I'm currently running CM7.0.0 and usually gets a day with normal usage. I'm willing to drop down to froyo if it means more battery life. Any input would be awesome.
if you use setcpu just flash my kernel as it has lower cpu speeds and no need for a screen off profile

Can you flash the kernel on any ROM? Do you lose any data? SetCPU bottoms out at 246 for me right now, but I know I've seen others here at lower. I'm running FR008.

Just because it's gingerbread doesn't make it awesome. Still has its downsides. 2.2.2 and fr008 have been so refined its stupid. I get the best battery life out of those. Setcpu with 2.2.2 gives me a warm sensation.
Sent from my HTC Aria using XDA App
CM7's battery life, when the GPS libraries aren't forcing the CPU to 100%, is good. A day or so. Maybe more.
2.2.2 is a little over a day on average, and CM6.1.1 can go up to as much as two days. So CM6 is the winner with battery life. But it's Froyo.
I'm getting two days with moderate usage with FR008...

By 2.2.2 do you mean Gene Poole's hfr003b? Do I just flash that as a ROM or are there other kernel or settings things I need to flash? There seems to be a lot of zips on his post. Sorry for my noobness

Flashing the ROM is enough. It comes with a kernel that will let you overclock only while you're using SetCPU. If you don't use that app it will run like a stock kernel and will give you great battery life. That's my choice and I'm happy with it.
Cool. Thanks everyone.

SE Stock Rom Advantage!

Hello All,
I noticed there are a lot of posts regarding Battery Usage & Optimization...
I tried many many combinations of custom roms, basebands and kernels and I always face the same battery problem especially when 3G/MobileData is switched on.
I admit that Sony Ericsson gave us a ****ty stock rom with poor kernel however It's still the best rom in managing battery usage.
I made a small comparison on Stock rom VS Custom roms with 3G/MobileData left switched-on and I found the following:
Custom rom(s): battery drain down very fast it goes for 100% to 1% in less than 8 hours (normal apps installed)
Stock rom: battery lasts for 2-3 days with normal daily phone usage (same apps installed as i did in custom rom)
Please share your opinions.
Thanks,
Ayman
I don't agree at all...
Custom roms can have just as good, if not better, battery life.
I personally think this was a good idea. Nice post and info. Just curious, how long did you do this study with the data you got?

hey guys, i too have this issue, i dnt know if its device specific. ive had the phone since march(2010) last year and have been modifying it with the great mods that the devs hav given us. everytime i install a custom rom i just get unusual battery drain, like yesterday, i followed instructions to the letter and installed tripnravers miuifroyo 1.0.8 and i lost 10% battery in like 20 minutes n ive hardly used it :-(. so nowadays i stick wiv a modified stock 2.1(ewjet to b exact). im gna buy a new battery and see if i get the same results. i really wna use a custom(2.2+)rom but the battery problems are really putting me off, theres so many people out der that arent really having ny battery drain whcih jus dus my head

Thanks Voelker BTW this is my first Thread in XDA, I used to use SE 2.1 stock rom till the first stable Froyo custom rom came out. I switched to Froyo then I started to notice this around 4 months ago and I tried many combination and a lot of optimizations to find out the best one although Stock rom was always better.
@fiscidtox:
I love Foryo and GB much much more than Eclair I currently on CM6 v6 Wolfbreak
Could you please tell me how the battery lasts on your custom rom while MobileData is left switched-on?
Thanks,
Ayman
I get a full day..
If you mean stock with no tweaks then maybe it would last longer, but a lot of that would be not having jit enabled...

You must be doing something wrong!
10% in 20 mins isn't normal.
I'm sure if you left it settle this would rectify itself though.
I think the biggest advantage of the stock kernel so far is stability, but the ongoing development for the custom kernel is sucessful to implement some problems such as battery drain caused by unability to go into deep sleep etc..
I never understood needing more than 24 hours on a charge. Charge it while you're sleeping you wont be using it then anyway.
Even if you like the 2.1 Stock ROM for any reason (Stability,Battery, etc) and don't like all these awesome 2.2 and 2.3, you should at least use Eric's JET ROM which is based on the original ROM has no stability issues and has faaaaar better battery life.
But seriously, I`m using Custom ROMs since the first 2.2 ROM by Z and never even cared to get back to the stock ROM.
When I use Wifi custom roms have almost the same battery life as the stock rom. But since I can't connect to wifi at work on any custom rom, im forced to use 3g.. and I need to charge my phone twice a day with almost no usage.

Let it settle for at least two days to see improvement.
Your battery needs to adjust, much like letting your phone build a cache, in order to really see how the rom will effect anything.
Im using the stock rom and my battery lasts a maximum of 2 days with this tweaks: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=934486
I dont use 3g at all and i use wifi sometimes (session lasts only 10 mins or so)
Brightness is set to "middle" also
Sorry dont agree..
I use wolfbreaks latest rom with the undervolt module.
Juice defender only enables my wifi when i am at home...all other times i have data on with facebook sync.
I now get the same battery life as i did on stock 2.1
Currently I have been unplugged for 1day and 12 hours and I am still at 38%.

[Q] noob with atrix on alien4

Hello, i just bought an atrix on ebay with alien4 and was wondering if i should stay with this rom or not? I have no mod experience on this phone. I would like to get better battery life and get rid of blur if possible. It might just have a weak battery, but it goes down fast when im not even using it. I believe it is unlocked bootloader. I dont want to go crazy, just like a nice setup thats fast and good on battery life. Thanks!!
Try the current rom out for a while, and then give CM7 a shot...

There are a few different choices. Definitely get comfortable first with flashing ROMs. Use the guides here in the forum to teach yourself how to do it. After reading the guides, read them again. You do not want to end up bricking your phone.
A few I myself have tried are CM7, HomeBase and Aura. I use HomeBase as my daily driver. My battery life has been pretty good. I usually get around 36 hours with pretty heavy usage of streaming music and videos.

I would give HomeBase a spin, but just remember that the de-blurred Moto ROM's do have certain things missing just have to read about whats there and see if you can live without it. I personally use HomeBase 2 which is slightly de-blurred and it looks and feels like a vanilla ROM. Some blur is good. Definitely read through a few posts and guides in the Development section to get a handle of whats going on and then start trying things out. I don't know what recovery you have but I would suggest first going to this link and learn a little:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Motorola_Atrix_4G
Then going to this link to get the latest recovery (it will save you some headaches):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
As for the battery thing, try calibrating. If that doesn't work, it could need a battery with it being a used phone.
I tried Homebase and Aura a couple days ago, and I went back to Alien#4. Couldn't put my finger on why I didn't like them. But you should try all the ROMs you think you might like and see what works best for you.
I get really good battery with light-medium use, and my phone is very smooth. So if it helps, here's my setup:
Alien#4
Faux's OC Kernel 2.0 (to 1.3GHz)
Undervolted (75, 75, 75, 75, 100, 100, 100)
SetCPU "Screen Off" Profile to clock down to 456000Max
The biggest battery killer by far with that setup is the screen. There's a mod in the development forums that can lower the brightness much more than the stock minimum, but I haven't bothered with it. I only use my phone in quick bursts most of the time; check an email, send a text, etc. so it's not that big a problem for me. I can go couple days without needing a charge.

Evo Battery life

I just typed out my post and got the Mac equivalent of a BSoD and lost what i typed (wow fist time that has ever happened to me).
Flashed Decks, I have tried both tiamat and SavagedZen kernels. Followed a few different guides and no luck at all batter still stucks. Today my stats were as follows. 4h 55m on battery with very light to little or no usage at all and battery is at 10%. When i had it on stock ROM have much heavier usage and was never that low before. I rooted to get rid of bloatware and my main reason for AOSP ROM was to get away from sense messed up BT stack (want to use Wii controller), but if this is what I'm up against I will stick with a sense ROM (probably go back with fresh had with my hero and it worked well). is this the norm for ASOP? Ive seen other post about better battery life on sense ROMs. is it just how it handle the system different I already followed this one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19474607#post19474607
And couldn't get it working fully. Does anyone have any other suggestion. Different ROMs, kernels, setting I could try as a last shot. Would prefer a basic ASOP with good battery life, and most stuff working (don't know if that's to much to ask).
Thanks in advance.
I don't think that 5 hours of battery life should be considered normal for any ROM. If that is all you get from a phone then something is wrong.
Have you tried wiping battery stats in recovery? Sometimes the software just reads the battery level incorrectly. It would have to be pretty far off to claim you were at 10% after only 5 hours but who knows...
You can google it but the typical process is to charge it up to 100%, wipe battery stats, then reboot and unplug. Drain the phone until it's absolutely dead then you charge it fully again and it should read the battery level more accurately. Apparently it is bad for Lithium Ion batteries to be drained completely though, so it is not recommended to do this often as it can shorten the overall performance of your battery.
I haven't seen much of a difference in my battery life using Cyanogenmod 7 or MikG (currently running 2.58 but 2.60 is out now). I personally really prefer sense ROMs and MikG is definitely the best one I have used. Give it a shot. I have gotten 60 hours of battery life on the stock Sense ROM (granted, it was with almost no use) and over 30 hours with pretty decent usage. I posted some youtube videos to demonstrate this since I figured everyone would claim I doctored photos:
over 50 hours (wound up being 60 hours by the time I finally unplugged):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGJucqVw0RQ
32 hours:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPqtsRDRYEs
I have since moved to MikG but I pushed my battery again last weekend and got another 30+ hours of it. I'm extremely happy with my battery life!
I am sticking with MikG over CM7...I have too many issues with CM7 and there just isn't enough to keep me there. I was going to write up a huge post about that now.
yea i actually did wipe that stats. Ill probably just do a full wipe and start fresh with sense rom and see where it goes. What are some advantages of mikG any features that make it special over others? What version of sense does it have? Im in the same boat some what, but I will say your time should be better with no use. Im not getting huge battery increases with aosp roms when using the phone. Im better off with the stuff that worked well on sense roms for me with no tinkering (gps, slow sd speeds, updating prls, etc)
Im convinced the people that claim these lengthy phone hours dont use their phone besides texting much even if they say otherwise. Most screen shots I see rarely even have voice calls registering. I think the best way for "me" to get a full day is to buy an extended battery. Im not on wifi all day, Im in and out of low signal areas. I need to keep data on due to emails for work. Maybe Ill run into a miracle rom and kernel, lol
I do like the classic rom which I backed up and I will try some others today (fusion/hyrbid ex1)

I totally agree with you with is why if you watch my second video posted above, I actually go into the usage screen and tap on the things to show what I am using. 50 minutes of voice calls, 25 minutes of words with friends, 41 minutes of GPS, Bluetooth on 100% of the time, etc.
But typically when I see those you tube videos I see people saying they were using their phone heavily and got 25 hours out of it. If you look closely in their battery stats screen though, you'll see that cell standby was the top battery user. That refutes the heavy usage claim right there!

1. Does it have the native hotspot app unlocked or just wireless tether?
2. Has CarrierID been removed or disabled?
3. Should I use the default kernel in the rom, or is there a particular one you use.
Thanks,

And of course I can't figure out how to upload a picture from my phone how noobish of me...I will find a way soon enough
Great! I have found MikG to be awesome so I'm glad it works for you too. If you want to upload a screenshot then tap the power button and quickly hit home. It should take a screenshot. Then if you want to share it you can go the gallery app and tap the share icon (circle with 2 arrows). If you want to attach it to a post here from your phone (xda app) then start a message and then tap the more button. You should be able to attach something from the gallery.
I just posted pretty much the same info at themikmik.com but it was more detailed. I'm on my phone right now but I'll go copy that link and paste it into an edit here.
Edit: Here is the link

Senseless MikG 2.9 has gotten me over 2 days of moderate usage consistently. This however does not include 4G since I can't get a signal anywhere >_<
I use CM7.1 + SavagedZen (latest) SBC (BFS) and get between 40 and 60 hours depending on usage.
I am also using the Sprint extended battery, however. By my estimation, this accounts for roughly 8 - 10 of those hours.
The kernel made a HUGE difference. Tiamat 3.3.7 was only getting me about 20 hours tops.
Phone is also undervolted, and supercharged. No overclocking or underclocking. I am incredibly pleased with this phone - definitely can't switch phones unless I know that I can get something remotely close in terms of battery life!

Simple solution, sell or return the Evo and get a 2nd generation windows phone mango device such as the Focus S or Titan or Lumina series, or even a first Gen such as the Focus. No more constant rom flashes, force closes, lag, and horrible battery life.

I just would like to show my appreciation to gamblor01 for his links and knowledge base..I am a flashaholic only because I wanted to find the best performing Rom/Kernel combo to squeeze the most life out of my battery and to be honest I am a bit of a noob...I have tried synergy ROM synister Rom kinged shooter, cm7 which did show some improvements but I just love my sense roms.....I stumbled upon this last night...and i did it...found MikG 2.60 sense Rom and i am running chopsuey 9.2.6 and i did like he stated .....turned off unnecessary things like 3g when not using...lowered display brightness, changed sync settings to a very minimal to where it only updates when I open the app...I went to work for 8 am and the phone was off the charger till it died 16 hours later almost 17 I will post pics as testament thanks again
The phone died around 12 am almost 1..btw

Best rom for battery life?

Does anyone know the best fully functioning rom with the best battery life?
(Sense or AOSP)
Thanks in advance!

CyanogenMod 7 with tiamat kernel gets pretty good battery life. The kernels tend to have mor eaffect on battery life then the roms themselves.
Thanks!
And for some reason my gf's EVO is dying really fast. I mean it drains 1% every 5 mins.
I replaced the battery and still the same thing. It's running CM7.

Try MIUI with Tiamat 3.3.7 SBC
Sounds like she might have 4g running all the time. Or maybe she might be updating/refreshing her background data to often. Only use 4g to down load big files or steaming vedio. Check her 4g connection and turn off or her sync rate set it to every 3 hours or more. If one or both are the culprit then she'll see a big improvement.
I run EVO Deck rom with cyanogenmod love it. And every thing works.
Hope this helps
I figured I'd chime in because you said you wanted a fully functioning ROM. CM7 and Deck had always yielded the best battery life for me with the last rev of the Savage Zen Kernel, but if you're like me and are very anal about the phrase "fully functioning" then it should be noted that the AOSP ROMs don't have 720p video recording. If that doesn't bother you than CM7 or Deck all the way.
That said i'm running TommyTomato's Classic ROM with the Freedom Agressive kernel and I'm getting 25+ hours on a charge which puts it on par with any AOSP ROM/kernel combo I've run. Might be able to get a little better on AOSP, but I'd say that's pretty damn good and it's fully functioning as in EVERYTHING works 100%.

4G is never on, Background data is unchecked, Email is set to manual sync, brightness is dimmed, no wifi. I feel as if I've done every battery saving trick in the book.
But I realized yesterday that I had SetCPU at 700mhz to save battery. I uninstalled it and the battery life wasn't dropping so rapidly. I can't say that was the issue. I'll have to run a few more test.

I will definitely try that combo and see what happens. I always flash roms but never kernels, to scared haha.
I get better battery on drews ICS ROM Than any from I've run in a year. I use it as a daily, it isn't completely fully functioning though, as 4g doesn't work and video is iffy.
That said, after I updated to latest radio, my battery is dying much faster........did you do the radio update ?

If you're flashing ROMs, you're already flashing kernels. Don't fear the kernel flash. Tiamat Lee on CM7 or Deck's is where it's at.

Nope, no radio update. Im going to see how the battery life is at the end of the day without SetCPU.
MIUI or salvagemod 1.4 with Tiamat 3.3.7 SBC

I meant interchanging kernels with custom roms.
A lot of people are saying the same thing so I guess I'll try those recommendations.
If you want sense go with team nocturnals shooter ROM it has been my daily for a good while and I really love the battery life

I'm on Tommys Classic Supermagic, running the Hard to kill battery calibration script from Zepplins thread and i'm getting the best battery life i've had on any other rom and i've used this script with about 10 different roms, from AOSP to Sense 3.0,wont run 3.5 because of bugs and no 4G,after a full charge with alot of phone calls, texts and surfing,i held a charge for 4 days,it was 67% on the second day and actually died on the forth AM.
I'd definitely do a comparison between screen-on and awake time.
If you don't know this, you can access it through Settings > About Phone > Battery Use/History/Etc. See if the bar graphs of screen-on match awake. If you see a long bar under awake, but not a matching one under screen-on, you probably have a process or app that is stuck and needs to be removed/re-installed or have it's data cleared.
Note: it's normal to have some awake time that doesn't match screen on as apps/processes still have to perform there activities even with the screen-off, however, it shouldn't be a ton.
The best app out there to study this IMO is betterbatterstats. Hope this helps! Cheers!
