Issues in conecting to the PC in "Download Mode" - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi,
I am trying hardly to connect to the PC when the phone is in download mode. All the time the PC(doesn't metter in XP or W7) is telling me that the USB is not recognized.
When I am connected normally it's working and I can connect with Kies.
What's going on?
BR,
Mircea
PS: I'm trying to update the i9000 software to I9000XWJS8

Update your USB drivers (Samsung ones) with Kies closed and try again. I only had this kind of problem while using old/bad USB drivers.

Options
Have you tried:
1) Battery out then immediately into download (its a little tricky with holding all the buttons and sliding in the battery).
2) Reinstall the drivers as suggested - not from kies but the independent drivers.
and remove and reinstall of kies is another avenue to try.
3) You could try to do the whole android adb thing (see info elsewhere) and push the phone into download (I think). Useful for troubleshooting at least.
4) try cleaning the usb port with alcohol (never hurts and might cause some issues if it is dirty).
5) changing the connection order (usb in computer and phone, then on/download then connect/download with usb in and reboot computer etc). And if you are using odin add that in the mix too (load after connected, load before)
6) sim card and sd card in may effect the download mode (I think I read that when I was trying the same - only I had no recognition at that time).
7) if you need Odin, you could try heimdall in ubuntu as another option.
8) try various usb ports (ie on the back of a desktop - no hubs)
Going though all of these takes a long time and I know how frustrating it can be.
If it were me doing it again with another phone I would try drivers/re and re kies/ clean port and try back of the computer first. You can likely do all that in about 20 minutes. I'd go right to ADB to see if it can see the device. I think it also installs its own driver which might help too.
Good luck, let people know what worked.

Hi,
Thanks for the answers.
I already updated USB drivers several times from Kies. From where should I take the indepedent of Kies USB drivers?
I tried with all USBs from my PC and laptop....

I did not check if the link was active but it seems recent. I know I got mine off softpedia several times (It was a long time before I solved my own issues!).

On re reading the post where it is sort of recognized from the PC, I would definately clean the port with alcohol if the new drivers don't work right away. Once I did that for mine I had like 7 drivers install right away. That usb connection seems very finnicky on the i9000.
If you don't have rubbing alcohol handy you might just try blowing in the port or compressed air on the off chance that is enough.

If Kies picks up your connection via USB .
Then open Kies shrink it go to download mode and connect USB see what happens .
jje

Same things happened to me. So i conected the phone first to the computer (it was off), and then put it into download mode.
Otherwise you can try the app "spooffw" to spoof Kies2 and update the phone to XWJS8, like i did it.

For those who can't connect with Kies

After half an hour trying I have just found a working solution how to connect your SGS in Kies. Here is the deal:
Start Kies, put phone's USB settings in Kies mode. Connect your phone to the PC. Wait until MTP App show "Connected". Go to your PC's Device manager, find Portable Devices and select Disable on GT-I9000. Do not wait for the disabling process to be completed, just disconnect the USB cable. Now connect the USB cable again, wait the MTP App on the phone to show you the message "Connected" and choose Enable on GT-I9000 in Device Manager. After a few seconds your phone should be ready in Kies
I tried this both on x86 and x64 Windows 7 and it works for me.
I hope this will help! And I hope there isn't another thread with this solution. If there is - I'm sorry
i cant wait to get home and try this... another 10h to go
but if this helps ur a geniues

Will put this in the FAQ if we have some confirmations for its effectiveness
when i first bought my phone it worked with kies, but after flashing it to a different firmware there was nothing i could do to get it to connect. i had deleted drivers, re-installed, etc etc but nothing worked. what ended up working was putting the phone in download mode, plugging in the usb to both phone and pc, then putting the phone into recovery mode, and as soon as the recovery menu popped up my device was recognized and the correct drivers were reinstalled and all was fine again

If you still have this problem, please try my method and tell me if it works
I had issues and I also tried this method. But it didn't help
Last thing I tried was to format the internal SD. That did the trick for me....
The biggest problem with getting the phone to connect to Kies is two fold:
1) MTP application will ONLY launch from the home screen (touchwiz screen). NOT from any app. drawer / launcher screen
2) If USB mode on the phone is set to Ask on Connection, MTP won't launch due to the USB app. being open (see 1) above)
If you set USB to Kies mode and then ensure you are on the home screen of the phone with nothing else running, Kies WILL connect
Also remember the 16+ size extension bug.
So a full wipe on ur I internal sd card is a good solution just make sure u back it up tour hdd
I also did a "Driver recovery" from Kies and it worked after that. Although MTP driver failed to install for me in this case.
Make sure to update to the latest version of Kies ( Now 1.5.1.0074.45 ) as this version seems far more reliable when connecting the phone
I recently discovered that the culprit of Kies continuously trying to connect to phone was caused by wrong MTP driver selected.
Under WinXP
After phone connected in Kies Mode..Go to Device Manager/Portable device..
If you see a device labeled as "MTP xxx or Portable device.." ,wrong MTP driver or older driver has been used..For my case, a Microsoft 2004 MTP driver was selected.
To fix it.
1) Do a manual driver update..for my case ,i let the driver wizard to search automatically..this round, another newer Microsoft driver was found..in fact 2 of them.. after installing the drivers(Microsoft 2006 MTP driver,2 are listed..). .Now Device Manager/Portable device listed "GT-i9000" ,Kies immediately found my phone.
Driver name that worked are "wpdusb.sys" and "wudfrd.sys" found under \windows\System32\drivers\..

Probable Fix for Kies
Friends,
I have also faced the same problem (while connecting my SGS via Kies MTP was crashing). It used to work earlier so I started to remove Applications and data in the reverse order of Installation. After I removed "Dolphin Browser HD" and all saved bookmarks it started working.
This may be a probable solution if you also have Installed Dolphin Browser.

India.
2 different issues.
MTP crashing on phone is independent from Kies on PC cant detect phone.
i couldnt use kies either but i wasnt worried as i hardly have free time now..
this was a simple fix and now it workes perfectly for me.
sorry about the late replay.
thanks

You might be interested in my little APK (SGS Toolbox). I first created it to have it read the product code from the nv_data file to allow you to check whether it has been modified after a firmware update. But now I added some extra options, of which one is the option to check whether there are new firmware updates available in KIES by issuing the same request KIES does when checking for new firmware. This way you don't have to connect your phone to your computer all the time to check for new updates in KIES. Note: It sends JM1 as the current firmware version to find the latest. I might send the actual phone's firmware version once I figured out how to find it. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778244
Thanks, I'll give it a try

Help connecting Epic to pc (yes I used the search and my issue isn't resolved)

Ever since I rooted I can not get my Epic to connect to a computer period. I'm about to give up and just deal with what I got, hopefully someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Before anyone decides to be a smart ass I have used the search function literally for days and have tried tons of things recommended with no result. I am the first to admit I'm an idiot when it comes to anything involving computers but I'm pretty determained to learn.
This has to be the phone because I have tried to connect to 2 desktops (1 running Windows 00 and 1 running the most updated Ubuntu), and 3 laptops (Windows xp, Windows Vista and Ubuntu). When I rooted I used the Vista computer and connected fine (can't anymore). I didn't have the space on the C drive to install the Android SDK so I switched to Ubuntu (first time user btw lol). Somehow when I was backing my SD card I lost any access to it or the notification bar. I never got my SD back til I rebooted but I haven't been able to connect to any PC since. When I charge (even in the car) it always tries to stay in mass storage mode. I basically charge in my car with my phone off hoping it will just charge and not mount my sd card to my car or wall lol. Yes I wiped 3 times, partitioned sd, tried several different cables (but my husband used mine and no problems on his Motorola) I'm sure I've done something wrong when I rooted or mounted to Ubuntu.
I also can't use adb. I followed the directions to the t (a few times lol) but when I run any commands it says "no such file or directory" I didn't have adb on the windows pc when I di noobnl's one click so I never ran the (adb shell ect) commands. I now can't do jack. I am now running noobnl's DI18 ROM with modem.bin flashed thru Clockworkmod.
I have tried all the basics you will find wit 2 days of web search.
My goal is DK28 (dream on Erica lol)...Thanks for any help and for anyone sparing me a lashing ;-)

When you plug in on your windows pcs...in Device manager..do you see anything appear? also do you have USB debugging on the phone?
USB debugging on?
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the Epic?
Rebooted phone and PC? (Sometimes it helps)
Used Odin?
Something might have been screwed up during one of your downloads, bad file maybe. Try reinstalling your drivers first, use Odin (phone must be in download mode), and see if it recognizes te device. If it does then Odin the stock .tar file and go from there. It'll give you a fresh start.
That's all I can think of right now.

I bet your USB debugging is on since most root's requier it. Even tho it says connect to pc if usb debugging is on it wont connect to my windows 7 box
I would suggest, if you're really having this many issues, just boot into download mode (1 on the keyboard + power button) and odin back to di18.
Just for kicks have you tried Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset? I assume that wiping does the same thing if not more but it's worth it to see if it somehow resets a setting that might be the issue.
What's left - software issue or Hardware issue.
Software:
hmmm...yeah gotta try connecting through Odin which uses downloader mode instead of USB modes...
Can Odin see your phone? Run Odin as admin with antivirus off, and proper samsung drivers installed. Then boot phone holding down 1 key into downloader mode. Connect to computer through USB port on back of computer (i.e. directly to motherboard) - does Odin identify something attached to USB port?
Yes - flash the dk28!
No - with Odin still on, unplug the USB cable, pause, and reconnect it. Still No? Try a different USB port on computer. Also try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers - be sure to reboot the PC. If still No, then try on another computer, and as you did before, try different cables. Still No?? --> hardware problem with phone.
Hardware problem with phone: Look at the usb port in the phone - is there any junk in there that might interefere with the connection?
Yes - clean it out
No: phone perhaps internally damaged:
Solution for hardware damage:
You and husband clean up and go to sprint store.
At store - tech will know phone is rooted, so:
--Tech more likely to like you? You handle it, maybe even blame husband. Husband can silently attend and look sheepish, playing the part of 'me man, me dominate environment, me break fancy tech of wife, me sorry." Try to get free replacement phone while simultaneously promising never to let your husband root the phone again, or even touch it.
--Tech more likely to like husband? He goes alone, cops to the true story of how you rooted it and then was backing stuff up when it suddenly stopped working [truth from men? so sincere!]. Try to get free replacement phone while simultaneously promising not to let you in the house should you even attempt to root again.
P.S. forgot to add you might turn off the PCs firewall while testing, as well.

same here. I tried out the free tethering app the other day and with usb debugging on i coudl never get it to install the proper drivers. Without it on and the 64bit drivers installed Odin worked just fine.
I have seen many Galaxy S devices not connect to a computer because of a faulty USB cable. Had my girlfriends sister switch out 3 Vibrants only to accidentally try and connect it to a laptop with a different USB cable and I've seen two others not connect with the stock Samsung USB cable.
How I fixed the tethering issue
I've had the same problem with my galaxy s - connecting to the PC (Win7 32bit) just doesn't do anything. As a test, I had a friend with the same phone/rom (froyo, rooted) connect - and he was able to! It installed the drivers and it just worked. He disconnected, I connected, and now it's fine.
So, see if you can find someone with the same phone and see if they can connect. Makes no sense to me, but it worked.
I've had my Epic fail to mount before. Interestingly any time I had an issue it was with a Mac - it always mounts on a PC. I'll stop now before I open up a can of worms.
Best advice I have is get a Dropbox account. You can use that guy to move files from a computer to the SD card without having to mount to the computer. Perhaps you can get a factory ROM (with root of course) on your phone that way?
You can get a app from the market called SWIFTP (free) & connect to your sdcard via ftp server. This can be a temporary fix till you get your connection error resolved.
I have 1 USB port on my laptop that the Epic shows up as "unknown device" on. Works on every other port, and everything else works just fine on the same port. The factory USB cable is finicky!

ODIN COM port problem

I've tried every way possible of getting ODIN to give me a yellow COM box with no positive results.
Followed instructions to the T everytime. Tried all 4 different USB ports on my desktop, Ive tried three different versions of ODIN, v1.0, v1.3, and v1.7.
What am I trying to do in ODIN you might ask? Flash my phone back to stock. I had AXURA 2.2.7.1 and wanted to go back to 2.1 eClair. ODIN stopped mid-flash to stock, so I went to sleep and left it alone, Woke up with the same situation. Pulled cord, pulled battery. Now I get the "Phone ! Computer" sign.
Really need to recover my phone as fast as possible, as it is the only phone I have (No landline either!)
Why am I not getting a COM port #?
Open up Odin .
Then plug the cable into the PC only .
Then pull the battery from the phone and wait about 5 seconds .
Now hold both volume buttons and put the battery back in (dont let go) .
Still holding the both volume buttons now plug in the usb cable to the phone .
You should now be in download mode and Odin should see the phone .
If not try using a different usb port preferably one directly off the motherboard .
Also try right clicking MY COMPUTER then selecting MANAGE then click Device MANAGER to see if it being recognized .
Followed your instructions twice, nothing. Checked device manager and I dont see anything indicating the phone is being recognized.
It's a driver issue. You need to use the Samsung Mobile driver rather than the SGH-t959_Vibrant_USB_Drivers driver. There was a thread or even multiple threads containing both drivers. The Kies Mini contains the Samsung Mobile driver. Do a search or something and you'll find them. There are multiple ways you can do this. If you want, you can try uninstalling whatever driver you have now. Uninstall Kies Mini if you have it installed and still not recognized. Reboot and reinstall Kies Mini. reboot and do you Odin thing. GL
Have you installed the drivers .
If not download and install the drivers found here .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Its fixed. Apparently the drivers I downloaded on my desktop were wrong, or something. Went upstairs and grabbed my mom's laptop that I was using last night when this problem happened, and it went right through. Thanks all!

Do you have the usb drivers installed correctly? Or try another usb port/ cable.
IVE put the USB driver in the c drive along sid the KIES and still it says its (USB) not recognised. Is there something else i could use instead ,i didnt like kies anyway.I tried to get airdroid to work (ive had that for 3 years) but it doesnt handle software (my phone) 4.4.2 it only does 4.3. It says FORBIDEN.FAILED TO SEND MESSAGE on my PC.
Most likely you are using an outdated version of Kies. There are multiple versions of Kies, ensure that you install the latest version of Kies. Then open Kies and have it detect your phone. That is by far the easiest way to install the proper driver for your S5 model. After the driver is in place you can close Kies and never use it again. Or uninstall it if you wish.
Do not use an USB hub, connect directly to your phone. If you have ongoing issues, use a different USB cable and port. Ensure that you are using a data cable, not a charging (only) cable that has the data lines shorted. If your PC has USB driver issues in general, then you'll need to resolve those issues first or use a different PC.

If you use Windows 8(.1) you have to disable driver signature verification to get the usb drivers installed. Here is a tut. https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorial...abling-signed-driver-enforcement-on-windows-8.

You are juggling too many unnecessary variables. Try to simply that and don't skip checking any of the points.
I have no idea what you mean by plug it in the mains? And at least until you solve this you should not be using a cradle, hub or anything else. As I suggested earlier, connect the phone directly to your computer USB hub. And if you have ongoing problems, try a different cable, USB port or even PC.
Making an assumption that the cable that came with the phone is good enough is counter productive. It's not impossible that it may be damaged or have some problem. Borrow or buy another cable, to eliminate one more possible cause of your issue.
Retrace and double check each step. As soon as you make an assumption that it's not worth checking x step because it couldn't possibly be the cause, you are skipping a possible solution. Make sure that you are using the latest Odin, make sure that you installed it from windows administrator mode, connect directly to the PC's USB port, different cable, etc. If you are methodical, you'll resolve the problem.
Good luck

If you haven't given AirDroid permissions to send SMS directly, "FORBIDEN.FAILED TO SEND MESSAGE" might appear. Change the permissions in phone's settings for a try

Odin Cannot See Note 4

So I'm attemping to use CF AutoRoot on my Note 4. I'm familiar with the process as I've used it on a few Samsung phones at this point. I went through the steps verbatim (installed Samsung Driver, Kies 3, start Odin, select firmware, power off phone, power on with vol-down/home/pwr, select up to put it in "downloading ..." steate, and then connect to USB). However, it never shows up in the ID:COM section. I thought it might be the cable, so I tried 3 different onces. I thought it might be something on the PC, so I tried 2 laptops and a desktop (2 WIndows 7 and 1 Windows 8.1, all of which I have admin on). Tried starting Odin as an Admin too. Rebooted all of the machines. Took out the battery on the phone for a couple minutes and booted in to the loader again. No dice.
Anyone know of any other way I can get this phone to show up on the PC?
Thanks!
Does your device detect by PC in explorer ?
May be your USB pin is faulty. Many times I have seen device can charge but can't connect to PC bcoz of faulty USB socket
And try with the stock cable. Sometime the aftermarket ones don't work as expected.

You need to make sure that KIES is not running (press SHIFT+CTRL+ESC, click on Processes, find the KIES processes and kill them all by clicking on "End Process").
Actually, KIES is completely unnecessary and does more harm than good. All you need are the Samsung drivers, which can be downloaded from here:
http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117
The thing is: if KIES is running in the background, it won't allow Odin to recognize the device, so that is why you should either kill it or (preferably, IMO) uninstall it and keep the drivers. Then you run Odin.
It was the cord on mine.
I dont have the stock cord.
I first plugged it in and it found hardware and started searching and installing drivers, even though I had installed the samsung drivers prior to plugging it in. There were 4 drivers it installed.
Then Odin wouldnt see it. So I tried another cord, with no effect, then a third cord and when I plugged it in, it found and installed 2 more drivers..
Then odin was able to see my note 4.
Hope that helps.
If u are using windows, install samsung drivers in compatibility mode. Right click on drivers icon setup, select install in mode compatibility eith windows 7, and follow the instructions. It must work. Saludos
