Correct. It's doesn't work after the latest update. I used aRoot, and it worked perfectly. A lot of people have reported SuperOneClick working too.
Yes Can try Super One Click as it works for most of the phone

do you know if either method is compatible with 2.3/Gingerbread? It started rolling out (albeit in small scale) today for the droid pro. i figure its too soon to know for sure, but wouldn't hurt to ask

Someone will take the plunge and try it here I am sure. Would like to know the answer as well. Soooo many apps on the Pro that I would like to get rid of for my wife.

I haven't received the update yet myself, so I'm not sure. I'd be inclined to think that it probably won't work. Maybe something like Gingerbreak will. I've seen around various forums where several Pro users have received the update, but none of them are trying to see if currently available means will root it yet.

I think a lot of people (myself included) are unsure of the consequences yet. It's my wife's phone so I wouldn't take a chance on messing it up since she also uses it for work. Trust me if it were my phone it would definitely be tested right about now. I'll keep looking around to see what some other people's results are and report back.
Oh and FYI she did receive update early yesterday.

Trying to use Gingerbreak or SuperOneClick shouldn't mess up anything at all. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, the rooting process should just fail and that's it.

No.
The only way to have rooted Gingerbread on the Pro right now is the through pre-rooted update available from Team Black Hat.
Noted with thanks!
I tried this: http://www.android-advice.com/2011/root-the-motorola-droid-pro-on-gingerbread/ and it works perfectly!

I've been reading up on this but I'm still left wondering about something. This phone is not rooted yet but do I need root to put a new ROM on it?
What does root let me do that cupcake doesn't already provide?
yeppity
yes. unless it's an update from t-mobile, which rogers isn't... unless you're a lucky owner of a rogers g1 already... are you?
if so, then still yes XD

Among many others:
Tethering via WiFi or Bluetooth both require Root.
Terminal su permissions requires root.
Apps2SD requires root.
Ok cool. I'm hoping to see it get rooted soon so I can do some of that stuff. I'm not an owner quite yet but tomorrow I will be . I still can't seem to be able to find paid apps on the phone when I was playing around with his. Are paid apps not available in Canada or something? That doesn't make much sense to not allow this in Canada. Anyways..thanx for the info!

That is correct, paid apps are not available for Canadians yet. That is another advantage of being able to load on another rom.
Has anyone been able (or even tried) to use the ShootMe app on a non-rooted NS? When I had the Epic 4G awhile back, I was able to use ShootMe with no problems, and it was not rooted.
When I goto accept the agreement, it says to make sure that my device is root and that I have access to low end graphics (or something like that). Just wondered if there was a setting that I could do, to get it to work - without having to root.
Thx!

I think you have to be rooted....
It can confirm Shootme works on NS if you have root.

I tested it before rooting openness and it didn't work.
Thx for your replies guys. What has me puzzled, is that I used it on the Epic and I did NOT have that rooted. So I was hoping there was a way to get it to also work on the NS, as I know nothing about how to root! lol
Oh well, it is what it is - thx again!

+1 (that was AWESOME!). Nice of Google to actually come out and say it too.
In the ShootMe description, they do say you must be rooted. I use drocap2 for my screenies, and it's the same deal.
I was hanging on to Stock because I thought the amazon prime membership might be worthwhile, but after two painful OTA updates, I'm out.
I had even frozen OTASilentInstall after 6.2.1, but the damn thing updated anyway! I can't account for this, but it did happen.
I'm backing up my stuff now and will try CM7.
For the record, 6.2.2 breaks root and you need BurritoRoot2.bin to get it back. It's a pain and doesn't yet work like the original. (As far as I can tell, you have to reset it at each reboot. Probably OTA rootkeeper will work, but still a pain.)
What was painful about 6.2.2? You can easily root it again.
I gave up on stock a long time ago lol. Running ics now.

yes, you're right. I rootEd again long enough to install CM7.
I'd just had enough jumping through hoops getting my hardware to do what I wanted it to do.
I wish companies like Amazon would understand they would do better to cooperate with users than to fight against them or treat them like fools.
Agreed, I stayed with stock after the last update and root, but not again. I guess I didn't think it would happen again so fast.
I'd drop stock in a hot second if I could get the gameloft 'Kindle Fire Edition' games to run. Sadly there's something I'm missing in the system that keeps them from running in CM7.

It's been said numerous times that freezing OTASilentInstall does not prevent updates. Also Amazon isn't trying to intentionally break your root..
this one prevented ota for me two times (6.2.1 & 6.2.2):

Yes, I read that yesterday. Hey, a lot goes on on this site! I can't keep up with every thread every day.
I should have researched preventing the OTA updates further. Like the following:

Yup. It is a pain.
On the other hand. Now that I finally flashed CM7, it's fantastic! It essentially solves the issue in one fell swoop.
It seems to me, it all comes down to how much you plan to consume Amazon's services. If little to none, then CM7 or some other rom is the way to go. If you have or want a prime account, etc. then you have to deal with the workarounds.
Fair deal.
The only thing that kept me off of CM7 is the video issue relating to audio sync. Video is around .5 to .75 seconds ahead of audio at all times on Netflix. So right now I'm running the MoDaCo stock ROM, which I don't know if it will prevent OTA updates or not, but paulobrien gives you a pre-rooted, odexed ROM that's ready to fly. Then I just use a different launcher, and it at least FEELS less stock-ish.
A little lost....I am currently rooted, If I receive the 6.2.2 and root breaks....exactly what will I need to do?

You would want to follow the instructions found here. Although, per the post from jcase here, he has an app in the works that will put the OTA headaches behind us

I used this thread and got Order And Chaos working on CM7, runs perfect. Also, almost all the gameloft apps I was looking for showed up on the market.
The ONC I bought on the Amazon Market doesn't show up and I didn't try that one since I had picked up ONC on Android Market for .99 during the sale at New Years, so I don't know if KF edition will run. You may have to purchase them a second time.

Oh, yeah, I had been using Go Launcher Ex with an ICS theme and was pretty happy with it.
The thing is, I had spent so much time setting everything up and the update undid a bunch of it, not just root. Plus it revived a lot of the bloatware I had already gotten rid of. It was enough to push me over the edge.
I backed up if I ever want to go back and I may also consider MoDaCo which looks good. MoDaCo with OTA protection would be very tempting, indeed.
I do give Amazon credit. What they did with KF, they intended to do and they did it well. It's just that I'm an inveterate tinkerer so I need my freedom! I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here on that point.

Are you using the no_ads2.apk version of the dog's face? I used that one and it appears that step 1 would run but I can't get past step 2 with that app.

Yes, that's the one. I've used it before, but it seems it won't do the trick on Nougat.

Same, I used it on Marshmallow so I guess there's something with Nougat changed so this app no longer works. Guess we might have to wait a bit until a solution comes out
It's because that app used an exploit called DirtyCow that was patched with a security patch a few months ago. Since we were only up to July for security we were still able to take advantage of it
Hey all, long time since i've posted.
Wondering if anyone has or has not received the update? Is there a way to force it? I still haven't gotten mine and I really want to start using it.

There is a way to force it if you have root but according to the article your mileage may vary, You can find the instructions for what you need to do here https://www.xda-developers.com/try-android-messges-for-web-now/
is this carrier specific? I'm on straight talk and i got the update, but no option to enable it.
also i'm on stock everything oreo
Install it from apkmirror

I even removed and then redid the update, nothing! Not a happy camper!
Guys this is a staged rollout even once you have the update until google turns on the feature server side for you you don't get it. So chill and relax it will eventually work.
its here, i have it right now, w/o the hack
I got the notification today. Running beta 2 on Android p
