Samsung prepping 10" tab with honeycomb for release?

Anyway, great another 3.0 tablet. Made by samsung... Great. Will it be an official Android experience like the xoom? Does it have a dual core? Etc etc... We don't know.

I wouldn't buy a Samsung myself...I'd especially like GPS to work on my tablet.

The article also mentions that 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet that we heard of yesterday, confirming it will pack a 1GHz dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera with "full HD" video recording, and dual surround sound speakers. Sounds promising, but only time will tell whether all this is true or simply a matter of lost in translation.

Alright, we've just laid eyes on some internal Samsung documents and can bring you the official names and specs of the successors to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab. Firstly, the Galaxy S II will tout a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1GHz dual-core Orion / Exynos processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, and 24Mbps HSPA+ connectivity. All those stats were leaked earlier this morning, along with the image above, and we've once again seen the 8.49mm thickness for this device, although we now believe it is the measurement at its thinnest point -- it's likely that the S II will fatten up to 9.9mm, presumably to accommodate the camera module, one of the last remaining parts of smartphone construction that require extra girth (NFC being another).
As to the Galaxy Tab II, it is indeed the 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet we've been hearing so much about, with the added bonus of it being a Google Experience Device. That should mean no Samsung-derived skin customizations atop the stock Android 3.0 UI -- exactly what we expect to see from the Motorola Xoom. Also matching the Xoom are the resolution, at 1280 x 800, and CPU speed, at 1GHz, though we couldn't determine whether the Tab II will be a dual- or single-core tablet. Our money's on seeing the Exynos 4210 appear in both new Galaxy devices, but we'll have to wait until Samsung's presser tomorrow to find out for sure. One more note of import on specs: we saw a 16GB / 32GB / 64GB storage listing, but couldn't be sure what product it referred to -- wouldn't it be lovely if the Galaxy S II was the first smartphone to step past the 60GB barrier?
Finally, looking toward the future, Samsung is apparently working on a 4-inch WVGA display with 3D capabilities -- presumably autostereoscopic like LG's Optimus 3D -- and an intriguing "Motion UI" control scheme. The latter will allow you to pan inside Google Maps and StreetView just by the movement of your phone, as well as zoom in and out of pages by tilting the handset up and down (a gyroscope will be required for both functions). Samsung also has big plans for LTE, with a focus on pumping out whatever you receive over the 4G connection to a nearby HDTV using dual display technology. The two applications we caught sight of were personal broadcasting, where your Sammy handset would act as an extremely sophisticated internet TV receiver, and cloud-based gaming. Here's hoping we learn more about these future ventures tomorrow.

I will buy this over Xoom if:
- It is confirmed (and reviewed) Google Experience Device (no TouchWiz etc!). This is the most crucial thing for any Android tablet that I might buy
- It is dual core (It should be comparable to Xoom)
- It has at least 1GB RAM
- It has the same or better battery life
- It has at least SUPER AMOLED screen (better if SUPER AMOLED Plus)
Then bye-bye Xoom
I am not worried about GPS, because I can trust my Nexus S for that (Or my wife old WinMo + external GPS lol!!!).
And I think, Samsung device is easier to hack (root) compare to Motorola, correct? More XDA dev support!

Im sure it'll be announced at MWC in less than 12 hours from now. This is definately going to compete with the Xoom. Especially if it will be priced lower than the xoom, which i hope it does. As mentioned above, I hope it runs a dual core processor. I read it has a 8 megapixel rear camera. This tablet is BANGIN!

I need foolproof GPS because I'm going to be connecting the Xoom to my Nexus One via wifi hotspot so I can use the Xoom's 10in screen for Google Navigation without having to pay for data(unlimited on AT&T)...I can freaking hardly wait to see Google Nav on a tablet
Besides not being a fan of Apple, that's why I never bought a wifi only iPad. No GPS chip.

What does wifi hotspot via Nexus has anything to do with GPS in the tablet?
Ah yes, Google maps ... hmmm. For me, Google maps is just a "backup" for Sygic Aura
I can imagine you need GPS for mobile navigation, but I cannot picture myself putting the 10.1 tablet at the windshield Too big, and I don't think it is even legal (size wise)?
Oh, and I don't care with the camera either, because I will always carry my Nexus phone OR my digital camera. And it will look weird making photo with a tablet on the street!!! LOL!
Seriously, I would dreaming to have manufacturer that can tailor a tablet as customer order. Similar like Dell.com, which we can choose which component to be included. Certainly, I will exclude 3G/4G, rear camera, no use!!!

If the Samsung GPS has issues, I'll still get it and ask for directions as opposed to paying $1200 for the Xoom!!!

The Super AMOLED screen is doubtful (to me... it just doesn't seem likely for some reason), the dual-core CPU is a given, and I'm sure good battery life is also an obvious feature. I assume 1GB of RAM will be present as well.

Samsung is also offering a 16gb model which should be cheaper and allow for more people to afford the tablet as compared to the Xoom. I have not seen any word of a micro sd card slot which would be disappointing if it did not have one.
The battery is also 6860 mah any idea how large the xooms is? Battery life should be similar per mah considering the specs are basically the same and running the same software.

I won't buy if there is no SD card slot.

It seems like Samsung tried to somewhat replicate the iPad.
This thing is missing lots of ports that many of the other Honeycomb tablets have.

No USB and HDMI port, that sucks big time.

Battery for the Xoom lasts 10hours..my dell streak 7 only lasts about 3 to 4 hours

Would the removal of the extra peripherals (HDMI, USB, etc.) lower the price? Or does it not matter?

Quad core asus tablet announced , would you upgrade

A the title says Asus announced a quad core Nvidia tegra 3 tablet ,

like you I'm very tempted esp after seeing the pics of the new Transformer Prime. If I don't do an impulsive purchase, I'll wait to see if Samsung is going to release a Quadcore GTab.

If it's thinner, lighter and price-wise = or cheaper than the GT then hell yeah!

Who wouldn't like a faster processor? They're just planning to launch a 3G version of the Transformer I this month and it'll only have a HSPA 14.4 modem. I (finally) got my new 3G Tab from the UK yesterday. It's got a different display, pulls 8GB down on AT&T, and the KH3 ROM vastly improves screen responsiveness and transitions. Hardware's just one part of the equation. Samsung's audio and video codec support is second to none. If I abandon ship, it'll be to a quad-core Samsung Tab.

I'm still setting up the new Tab. Once I'm done I'll post the differences between it and the U.S. Wi-Fi version I've been using. The display's definately different. Maybe they updated it because of the Newton rings. When you look at it from the side, you can see a very subtle texture under the glass. Also, the color temperature is cooler and colors aren't as exagerated. It's a definite improvement (to me). The back has also been changed. It's now solid black with a soft-touch coating vs. the metal-esque grey plastic of the Wi-Fi version. The UK 3G Tabs were received by resellers last week and have an October build date.

If the build quality on the quad core is the same as the reg TF, then NO. The TF is a crappy product. The Tab is much more refined.

The build quality on my TF is perfectly fine - it is in no way a crappy product.
In my opinion, the TF is a different class of product to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is a definitely a "purer" tablet experience, and in general I do prefer my GT10.1 over my TF.
However, when I go on vacation next week, I will probably leave my GT10.1 at home, and take the Asus TF with dock instead because of the advantages the dock brings.
If the new TF can bring the tablet experience of the GT10.1, with the flexibility of the TF dock, I'm sold.

I have got the uk 3g here in Egypt from Vodafone official store and I liked the black back allot more valuable than both metallic and write backs, thanks for your reply and wating for your comparison between the two versions

I wouldn't call it "crappy" but I'd say it's pretty average. I looked at all the tablets before buying the G-Tab and none of them were as refined h/w wise. The Transformer's I played with all creaked and the display wan't as good as the G-Tab. Friends have Transformer's and some have had to either exchange them or send them in for service for various h/w issues. (And I know, the G-Tab has Newton rings but it hasn't effected my two or those owned by friends.)

is it not scaring any of you that quad cores are coming so fast.. it means google and the manifacturers did not even give their tablets a year to sit on their thrones (not even a half year for many ones).. it gives me the fear of being outdated "abnormally fast" (please mind that statement=abnormally fast) no matter what i buy... and now there is the risk for our tegra 2 tablets not to get ICS.. it also scares me to be outdated easily again.. i mean, if the biggest rival apple is still caring about their iphone 3gs even after 2 more new models, what manifacturers are doing sounds so nokia-ish (like giving birth to many children but not caring about their growing).. is it not?

No plans on switching. Waiting for ICS update and I will be happy.
Regarding TF201 I don't really fancy the "rings" used on on the back and the bezel that is big. But it got better battery with the dock (hence the big bezel).
Love my Galaxy Tab and wouldn't trade it for a Transformer.

The tab I want next is based on these factors:
- form: how thin and portable is it
- display: must be vivid and sharp, no les than samsung quality
- expansion: absolute must. itis the single place the STab failed on for me
- price: has to be market price or better, no first adopter prices please
- processor: the more powerful a processor you get, the less likley you will need to upgarde for a longer term
I will hold no loyalty to a brand, but some brands do things better insome areas than others. For now, the Asus pad, at least visually, looks pretty sweet.

If the quad/tegra3 can play my 1080p mkv content off my portable hard drive while connected to a HDTV with the HDMI cable plugged in then I'm sold.
As of right now when I bring movies home to my parents for my dad to watch I still have to use my bulky laptop. I got the tab in hopes I could decrease my travel weight. Alas I've only added as now I bring my tab AND my laptop.
So sad.

Taking Back And Waiting A Month.

Since they just announced the pre-order and release date for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 I decided to take my regular 10.1 back, since i'm still within my 30 day return period.
Really excited for the new one with all the upgrades. Having a SD card slot, 2 speakers on the front of the Tab and adding IR so I can control my home theater components, and getting official ICS on it. I can't wait.
Pre-order May 7th, release date on the 22nd.

It's actually a downgrade, not an upgrade. It's thicker and heavier which means that either the components were changed or the design has been changed to make it cheaper to build. There's no flash on the camera either. It's got an OMAP chip vs. Teg2 so it's pretty much a lateral move but I'm sure the OMAP will be better at local video playback (anything would). The SD card's a benefit but ICS is a wash since the orignal G-Tab will get it (eventually) too. The 8GB is supposed to be $399 while the 16GB will be $449 so it's still no bargain.

That's what I'm waiting for. I love my 3G Tab and the only thing that (for me) needs improvement is a more powerful processor. For taking notes and such at work the S-Pen's also a cool and practical feature. It's been delayed until June so Samsung can put a new quad-core Exynos SoC in and I'm hoping they bump up the display resolution while they're at it.

I'm in a similar predicament. I want to get the Galaxy tab but now with Tab 2 launching i'm not sure if it's a wise decision. I feel like I will have buyers remorse if I buy the Galaxy tab 2 just because it has older components and a step backwards. Galaxy Note 10.1 won't arrive till June if its not pushed back (high possibility of delays). The Transformer Prime was another Tablet I was looking at but with the wifi and gps issues not too sure about Asus. So now sadly, I may look at the new iPad. Anyone else have any other suggestions?

You can pre-order both the Acer A510 and new non-Prime Transformer (TF300) that has a plastic back cover and shouldn't have wireless issues. They're $449 and $399 respectively with the Acer being the more upscale of the two. Asus' build quality and QC have been sketchy and I haven't really followed Acer to offer any opinion. Costco's got some good deals on the G-Tab 1 and a ninety day return policy which should fall in to the launch timeframe for the Note.

Yeah in a lot of ways, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a DOWNGRADE over the original GT 10.1. The SD card slot is nice, but when you think about it, you can just get a 32 GB Tab 10.1 and be fine. I like the new placement of the speakers, but that's about it. Front facing camera is only VGA. No flash for the rear camera. Thicker and cheaper build quality. Same PLS screen, same res, same processor speed. The original 10.1 with the Tegra 2 would be better for gaming, while the OMAP should be better for HD vid watching. Although I have to say, if you encode a 720p file properly, it looks great on the Tab and plays really well. You don't need to play 1080p on these things.
If I didn't have a tablet right now and was looking to invest 400 dollars for a high-end one, I would honestly wait a few months. I'd wait either for the upgraded Transformer Prime with the higher res. screen and no GPS/WiFI issues, the Acer, the Galaxy Note 10.1, or even whatever quadcore Exynos Tab Samsung is working on at the moment.
Besides all of that, cheaper 7 inch Tegra 3 tablets are coming soon. Now is not a good time to be tablet shopping.

When I looked at the size and weight, and it was almost the same. From what I've read it's the same height and width, only 3 or 4 more ounces. Not a dramatic difference in weight. Hopefully, they kept the same shape and dimensions
so it will fit in my Galaxy Tab Book Cover Case.
I know there was no real upgrade in terms of specs, but, the additions they did make was huge to me. Adding ICS, something the previous Tab will probably not get, and if it does, it will be several months away. I had a ICS rom on mine and it was nice, but, lacking in some areas of true ICS. I like the speakers on the front at the top and bottom better than on the sides. It should make a huge difference when watching movies or listening to music. You can thank the German courts for this and Apple. Throw in the fact they added a space for SD card storage to expand, IR capabilities, will be great controlling my Home Theater components and it's a winner to me at the $399 price tag.

Sadly, I think you are right. I will have to be patient and wait and see what happens next. I guess with Google IO coming up soon the emphasis will be completely on JellyBean and ICS will be obsolete already by the time summer comes around.

The original Tab 10.1 is getting ICS. Samsung have confirmed it at several different points in time. WHEN will we get it, that's another story, but it's coming. It's being worked on. They even said that it was number 2 on the their priority list, right behind the GS II which has already started it's ICS rollout globally. It can't be that far away
So if you factor out ICS as an advantage (which you should), the only two things the Tab 2 has over the Tab 1 are the modified speaker positions and debatably the microSD storage (I say that because the storage sizes are halved on the Tab 2). Everything else that's different on the Tab 2 is a disadvantage.
Sorry to say, but it's the truth. And that 399 price point doesn't make it any easier to swallow, especially when you consider that if you can be patient for another couple of months, you'll have a huge selection of Tegra 3 tablets at all different sizes, all different price points, made by different companies.
Believe me, I'm not hating here. I got my Tab 10.1 last July and I absolutely love it. But right now, if 300 or 400 is my sweet spot for a tablet, I'm holding off for a couple of months. The Tab 2 isn't worth that.

I'd wait either for the upgraded Transformer Prime with the higher res. screen and no GPS/WiFI issues, the Acer, the Galaxy Note 10.1, or even whatever quadcore Exynos Tab Samsung is working on at the moment.
Besides all of that, cheaper 7 inch Tegra 3 tablets are coming soon. Now is not a good time to be tablet shopping.

screw this..selling it and getting the asus prime

I would also hold off for the note 10.1... Better hardware AND the s-pen will give it functionality that no other tab has. I have tried the regular note (5.3) and the pen works very well, very cool to jot down stuff quickly or to add comments/notes to documents.

Now they are saying they halted production of the Tab 2 for some upgrades. One of them being a quad core processor with their latest chip.

I read that also... it definitely has me wondering if this will delay us OG Tab owners from getting the ICS update in May. I have no doubt that the appeal of ICS is a selling point for Samsung and potential Tab-2 customers might settle for the original tab if it gets ICS prior to the release of the Tab-2.

With the Galxy Note 2 reportedly coming out soon, what do you guys think about the Tab 7.7 successor?
I believe the Note and Tab 7.7 were announced the same time last year.

Don't ask me how I know this, but there is (or was as of a few months ago) a successor planned.

I also love the 7.7 because of the size, super amoled plus screen and the build quality but that comes at a high price compared to other tablets.
I would love Samsung to release a successor with a higher resolution screen (1920*1080), 2GB of memory, 2-GHz quad-core processor, S-Pen and Jelly bean which would make upgrading worthwhile.

Their approach is so scattershot, there's no way they'd ever operate this way.
Granted, sAMOLED+ will be replaced SOON. My guess is 2015, likely by motorola or apple,
Capacitive brushes and precision styli won't require wacom forever... it wasn't hard to come up with what would make the next gen version of the p68xx worth paying for, so how do we move this forward?

they should redesign the speaker positions like those gtabs in germany wherein the speakers are on top and the bottom of the device (front facing i think)
so that whenever I play something, I won't inadvertently cover the speaker ports

i agree to this. but yeah a successor would be nice. as long as my current 7.7 can do what i want it to do then i'm fine with it hehe.
for me, at least, the features that i would like for it to have is:
- higher resolution/dpi screen
- 8 or 12mp camera at the back
- 3 or 5mp camera in front
- removable/replaceable battery (no tablet has this i think)
- microUSB suporrt
- a better and faster media scanner (current one is pretty slow)
- orientation lock for the native video player
- better/louder speakers
- support for external hard drive usage
- dual sim support
- dual microSD suport
- keep receiver mode (love that i can call and send text messages using this tablet)
speaking of impossible, it would be awesome if the tab industry makes a tablet that can fold the screen into two, making it two screens. just unfold to return back to the full screen. LOL

I m with you on that! Even ics is half ass effort by sammy. Wifi is not working on my hk tab after the upgrade. Battery dies quickly. They should fix what we have now before asking ask to spend more $ on a new device

Why have you stopped?
But seriously, there is no reason why these can't be included in a tab, but the drawbacks, I believe are:
1) Google want people to use "cloud"/internet to save and retrieve information from - not USB or internal storage - more advertising revenue (?)
2) The reason for a non-replaceable battery is that it is of a much better quality, whilst keeping production costs down - spare part batteries may also keep the device going longer than Samsung wish.
3) other things will come as technology improves and costs are kept under control - e.g. producing a drastically better dpi screen would double the price of the tab because that is not the current norm.
Anyway, this time next year, a lot of these wishes could be the norm.

A removable battery should be included, what happens when the original battery dies? Are we gonna be forced to buy a new tab because we can't replace battery?

7.7" SAMOLED 286 PPI @ 1080P, oh man that screen would be gorgeous... That screen + Exynos Quad + 2GB of RAM would be pretty sweet device (and realistic too). Because they can make higher PPI displays using pentile matrix on OLED tech. (S III has 306 PPI).

Unfortunately with the release and pricing of the Nexus 7, I'll be surprised to see Samsung continue to compete in this area... Which is unfortunate with the many features I appreciate missing in the Nexus.

The next nexus tablet could be a motorola, which has licensed the sAMOLED patent from samsung, or samsung manufactured the screen for the droid razr... also, toshiba has released a sAMOLED tablet, but I've been too busy fawning over mine to pay much attention to it.
I'd be willing to bet a "nexus line" of products will be coming along soon. Mid-high range devices for professionals and not just enthusiasts...

You are right. Will there be 3rd parties willing to offer replacing batteries? I fear a period of time will come when people start ripping out the insides to replace parts and they won't be able to. The battery is my prime suspect.

Suggest it to Engadget and get them to post it up on their site.
Apparently Samsung look to their comments section for feedback on their devices (their laptops anyway).

Asus is crazy today, I have to say that. All of their offers are crazy (for specs or for price).

I think Sony faces the payoff of delaying its Tablet Z. These two tablets are so powerful. The new Asus Infinity has better specs in any area with the same price but having a excellent dock (which many love). The MemoPad's specs are not far from Tablet Z (better CPU with less power consumed, weaker GPU), the possibility of installing normal Windows 8 due to Intel CPU, and the price should be much more sweet.
I have three Asus tablets (tf101, tf201, tf701), and I know their issues (stupid update, bad build quality, and something special issues of each tablet) and swear not to buy another one, but as I said, these offers above are two sweet, and I think Asus has the experience to pass some stupid things like cheap NAND (which make horrible I/O on my tf701) or wifi.
What do you think?

Where did you get those prices from ? To my knowledge old infinity sells at same price as XTZ and the new one would be cheaper then it ? I dont buy it.
Also memo pad 10 was released like 3 months ago and with such price of new one it wouldn't cause them big loses.
My wild guess is that new memo will be 400 and tegra 4 based wont go under 600.
Power wise - i think all knew new gen is coming and XTZ will be getting snapdragon 800 version for that reason. I don't play games on tablet so power is secondary and i wanted HD screen and low weight.

Asus's tablets have very good devs. In fact they are the reasons why users do not leave Asus for their bad software support.

I meant how is Asus at supporting Debs? Unlock and AOSP releases and all that. I'd still put my money on the XTZ right now.

It is also worth considering form factor. The lightness of the XTZ counts for a lot.

Asus is the quickest OEM releasing the new update (yep, crap but quick very near stock one)
Normally the bootloader is unlocked, even locked but not hard to pass.

Yes, IMO it's a good selling point too, but now we still don't know the exact weight of the new Infinity. The dock is great, truely, that's why I bought three Asus tablets (tf201 is a nightmare though)

Definitely some impressive hardware from the new ASUS Infinity. It seems it has a great display as well, as expected from a SuperIPS panel and now at such high resolution. USB 3.0 is a good thing from the dock. $499 (dock included) would be a great price for such specs.
Weight is a big deal, personally. It's a 10.1, which means, if it's a kind of heavy tablet, it would be exhausting to use it for prolonged periods of time. I pre-ordered my XTZ, a week ago, but hasn't arrived yet. I think I'm gonna love it but I can deny that the ASUS Infinity would be a great option to wait for.

Yea its their selling point, each of them try to have something unique : asus got docking , google updates , sony design and samsung s-pen / pricing i guess.

I have been burned a few times on Asus tablets; the TF 201 had crappy wifi and gps reception, and the Infinity had terrible IO performance which made the tablet stutter badly when doing something like downloading an update, a file, etc. Also, the chassis started to separate from the screen bezel area on mine, and I barely used used it for a couple of months.
I like the innovation and many efforts that Asus makes when trying to do something different; but for me, build-quality is lacklustre. I would certainly wait for a while before going with any Asus tablet to see what the issues for that tablet will be. Perhaps they will grow of out these issues.
