[Q] Question regarding NoDo update on Focus - Focus General

Hi can someone tell me if I have an unlocked Focus here in Pakistan, will I get an update when AT&T releases it or right after when MS releases it(which they have)?

We could tell you that, but it depends on when we get it here.

Is the OS branded? Meaning when you first got it, did you have AT&T apps? If so, then you'll have to wait until AT&T lets MS release it. Otherwise you should be getting it soon. The NoDo release like all WP7 updates so far is a gradual roll-out.
Actually, here's a better response: Do you have the pre-update?

I'll have to check on the pre-update. So AT&T can control updates on my phone all the way in Pakistan? :S

If your phone is AT&T branded on the OS-level, then it can control updates anywhere for AT&T Focus phones.

So it can be unlocked to be used anywhere in the world, and yet be branded on the OS-level by AT&T?

If your phone has AT&T apps, then it's an AT&T phone. Maybe I'm wrong. However, I think if you buy it locked, its updates are locked to that carrier's schedule. If you have the pre-update, then this conversation is moot. Just go to your About page and see if your OS version is 7.0.7004 or 7.0.7008. If it's 8, then you should be looking for NoDo come out anytime now. If you're on 4, then you won't get it until the AT&T folks get it unless you Dev-unlock it and remove the branding information.

How does one do that with a Dev-unlocked phone? I tried to get to the reg keys I found on some guys tweet but it tells me that they are restricted.... any help would be great

I'm trying to find that out too. Chris Walsh is supposed to be working on a post for people with the HTC Mozart, and (theoretically) the steps shouldn't be too different.

Just as an example, I have an unlocked ATT Focus on Rogers in Canada. I was getting no update available. As soon as I removed the ATT branding using the registry patch, my phone immediately told me that I had the pre-nodo update ready.
Hopefully as soon as Microsoft releases teh nodo for the Focus I will get it instead of having to wait for ATT to approve it.

Hi,
can you quickly point me to the info about how to remove the ATT branding using the registry. First time I hear about the possibility...
Sounds promising!
Thanks!
cheers,
Alex

You need a registry editor. Then go to HKLM\System\Platform\\DeviceTargetingInfo\MobileOperator
it should say ATT-US. Delete the ATT-US & leave it blank
save - reboot & you're done. You should now get notified of the pre-update.
SR

wait so is there a reason why we shouldnt all do this registry edit and get nodo today? what are the consequences of doing this?

No NoDo

I believe what the posters are saying is that you will get the pre-update to 7008, you will not get NoDo.

so am i better off with 7008. should i do this update so i can get nodo faster or should i just sit and wait with 7004

This assumes you have permission to see that registry value. On my phone Everything under \System is restricted, with no visible subfolder Platform. And since the key presumably exists, you can't just create a key called Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo\MobileOperator with blank value (at least I can't do it) because that key can't be overwritten.
HTC devs have of course already figured out how to do it on their phones:
http://blog.walshie.me/2011/03/23/h...-and-get-your-windows-phone-updates-htc-only/
I'm probably switching to an HD7S so I can feel the love of XDA devs again.

You need the SamsungRegistry app not the TouchXperience RegistryEditor app in order to see and edit the proper code. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910911

I went ahead and unbranded mine as well and got the pre-nodo. Now come on MS and push it out.
Ahhh, push it
Push it real good

can anyone help me unbrand my samsung focus.

get this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910911
then do this
Then go to HKLM\System\Platform\\DeviceTargetingInfo\MobileOp erator

perhaps if yours is branded tmobile you could do so, and post the changelog here ?
there must be some change or why would they post it dated 15/03/10 ???

there is no changelog from htc's site. it's just a small "updated" t-mo uk ROM, still based on the very first 1.43 ROMs. i wont call it an update at all. FYI, this so called update has been made available in xda for a long time now. i've downloaded it and compared the Hash, and they are 100% identical.
omg!
if this is the update i've waited 3 months for then heads are gonna roll!
is it actually the exact same rom as before?
what the hell was the point in it?

It's not even an update. Its the exact same version number that I have on my original ROM T-Mobile HD2 - ROM Version:1.43.110.2.
And yes, I still have my original ROM. It works okay for what I do, and want to stick with official ROMs if possible. Maybe in the future if T-Mobile don't give a real update, or I hit serious issues, but for now I'd like to keep my warranty intact. I'm aware I can re-flash it easily back to the original ROM (even more so now that ROM is officially available to download) - however my concern is over times when I get a fault which means I cannot re-flash it.
i'm on the original t-mobile rom and find it suitable. the only real change ive made is to revert back to the windows messaging set up, not htc messages.
how many people on the original rom have had problems with HTC messaging?
The disclaimer says:
* This is a generic software update. Any additional software or settings provided by your mobile operator or company will be lost. If you require this customization, please contact your supplier first before upgrading.
This may 'unlock' t-mobile from their current position and allow them the HTC rom upgrade path.
Has anyone tried this?

Interesting point, however I suspect it's a standard disclaimer they put onto their ROM downloads. Would be interesting though for someone to confirm?
Well, someone try and download it using their S/N and try flashing. Worst that happens is it says 'Incorrect Vendor ID'

I don't even want to think what the reaction on there is going to be once they actually announce it.

I tried it just incase it was generic but that was a a massive waste of time, as far as I can see this rom is identical to the factory version.

New to wp7. Focus vs omnia 7? (Tmobile user)

I know that this topic has probably been posted 1000 time, but I would like to know which phone would be a better choice for use with tmobile. (the lack of 3g is a non-issue to me, I don't have a data plan nor do I plan on getting one) Which is the better phone? The omnia looks like it's built better, but the focus has expandable memory.
Also, how would updating work with an unlocked omnia 7?

Had Omnia7 on 3. Switched to Focus.
Updated both fine, no issues whatsoever.
I switched to Focus because I use the space (7 of 24 GB free)
The choice is yours and as you put it, Omnia7 is built better but both have pluses and minuses, some according to taste.
For example, I prefer Focus because of expandable memory, less weight and rounded edges, no metallic (cold) feel, in this order.
Is there any word on mango for the focus? I seem to remember some sort of holdup with nodo.

as long as you have a 1.3 focus, you can install any of the mango builds (i have rtm 7720 on mine right now)
i think the nodo update for 1.4 focuses was rolling out now, if that's the case, you should be able to update that to mango as well (i think)

So does it matter whether or not I get a rev 1.3 focus?
on the sticker under the battery (on the phone) it will say rev 1.3 or rev 1.4, it might say it on the box too, but i can't find mine to check.
if nodo is live for 1.4 it shouldn't matter which one you get, but if you can pick up a 1.3, i think you'll have less issues.

It does matter, rev 1.4 has different hardware and Mango updates for it are "delayed".
Best and easiest way to find the revision without even removing the battery, read my post here. Not all Focus versions have the revision on the sticker. Roger doesn't.
Ended up getting a rev 1.3 focus. Thanks for all the help guys!

So far, here's how it goes:
Unlockable by Chevron are versions:
7004
7008
In order to unlock, you need to have one of these. If you have a greater version, you will need to downgrade/flash one of these roms to get 7004.
Then, install Samsung Tools and run it. You only need to do this once. Do NOT connect to Zune, except to install this app. Then, after running this, check that you are still unlocked with Chevron, it should display "Relock".
Update to 739x (NoDo, that's 7390/7392) and your unlock will keep.
To update to Mango and keep unlock (sideloading), read here. Keep in mind this hasn't been tested for Focus, yet.

I should make a FAQ for Focus
Formatting/flashing the phone doesn't affect SIM lock.
Locks are in NVRAM - you do not overwrite this section by flashing firmware or formatting. If the device is already SIM unlocked, flashing/updating/downgrading the ROM will keep the phone unlocked.

plug the phone into PC and open Zune. If it doesn't prompt you to update then in zune go settings> phone> update
I may have had it yesterday but through my phone on the charger w/o looking at it. Saw the update when I got up at 0530, though. Cool that I got it, but I was hoping for Mango and am still waiting on a replacement phone in the mail that is "in production"
Ok, so I tried to update it but Zune didn't say anything so I checked the settings and it said my phone's firmware is 212. Does that mean it did it on it's own? Also when I bought the phone off of somebody almost a month ago they had put the version of Mango that was out already on it. Is it possible that they put this on there too?
firmware wise, you should be good to go. as far as your mango rom on it goes...if someone sold it to you with the beta mango on it, and you dont have a NoDo (pre-mango) backup saved you may be screwed on future updates. You might read up on putting the RTM mango on it, as iirc it puts you back in the main update channel.
a month late well more than a month
you finally get it
it does bring some better life to the phone
Although hard reset after the update
Can this update work over the Mango build?
I also have a DVP on AT&T, but I put the Mango release on it in July and so far my phone sees no update when I connect it. Do I need to revert back to the NoDo, pre mango install state?

Pretty sure youll need to go NoDo again. In fact, I'd stay there for the time being since Mango is imminent.
I got my replacement phone today (AT&T) that shipped out on 9/23. It didn't even have NoDo installed. At least I was able to update it but I would've thought it would at least have NoDo. Damn Dell.
AT&T DVP without nodo would be good thing because you could unlock it then update. Most ( all I thought before reading your post) AT&T DVPs shipped with nodo so no chevron unlock.

Is AT&T Pushing Mango out to DVP owners now?
I reverted to NoDo and the 7392 update came down. WiFi works! Haven't seen the Mango update yet, though and reverting to NoDo from Mango makes me really miss those Mango features.
The status page on AT&T says that DVP Mango update is in planning. But this thread makes it sound like AT&T users have received a Mango update. The WMPOWERUSER trick of pulling the ethernet on Update has not tricked Zune into updating my phone. So... is the Mango update available from AT&T for DVP or not?

Since Dell iced it's WP7 division... is AT&T Mango gonna happen?
Shoud I unlock the phone and go without AT&T integration or wait for Dell/Microsoft to figure this out? As noted, this isn't "scheduled" or "in progress", it's "in planning" which translates to a multi-month delay, or never before we get the update.

Had a few problems with Rainbow *not just the relocking* but I've been using this for 3 days now and its a lot less hassle with an Omnia 7
Same here. Orange UK - Still on 7740.
Orange have been poor with updates. Shame really... I couldn't look at other networks though as Orange have by far the best deals available and do stock a decent range of WP7 handsets.
I've been having major issues with the 3G not working randomly after 8107, so you are quite lucky.
I know this is an oldish thread but has anyone on orange/tmob/everything everywhere or whatever they are calling themselves today have the 8107 update?
The disappearing keyboard is such a pain and I need a fix.
It's Mozart I'm wondering about really because reading up it seems other phones may already have had this update.
I called Orange business support and theire tech guys "don't know about any 8107 update". I thought this was just the call centre woman fobbing me off so sent an email to account managers and they said the same thing even though I sent them offical link from MS about the update.
Wasn't being pushed to my Omnia 7 on T-Mobile UK as of last week.
Is your phone Interop unlocked? If so you could just tweak a registry entry so you receive the update.
If not, you can manually update using the cab sender method. Doesn't require a developer/unlocked phone. I did it myself and its pretty straightforward.
I followed this guide. Easy to do and it shouldn't stop you getting future OS updates (i.e. Tango) and manufacturer firmware updates through Zune. That is, if Orange ever get round to letting them be pushed out.
Thanks sab, I followed the guide and have updated my phone.
I've not seen any problems so going to update my colleagues phone too!
I'm just annoyed with Orange for not pushing updates from MS. I think MS should take control of updates like they do with their operating systems and take the carrier out of it. I appreciate there will be regional issues and carrier specific configurations but it's just silly having updates and not being able to apply them.

Can you confirm this works OK for Orange UK? I don't want to screw up a phone when I still have a few months of the contract left. Also, did you only need 5 language pack on the Mozart? Mine only lists 5 under Display Lancuages, but loads under Region Format.

I've been using it fine since I posted that updated. As has my colleague. So great to fix that annoying 'hidden keyboard' problem.
If I remember correctly, I used the 5 languages pack only. The same as what was listed in the languages section of the phone.
There are no guarantees and you may screw up your phone. That's the risk you'll have to take.

Forgive my asking another stupid question, but my phone only lists "English". Am I correct in assuming this is English-UK?
I'm also wondering if I should to this if it might break the auto-update and the Tango update might be available in the future. Any thoughts?
Finally, my phone's on 7740, not 7720. Anyone know if that would make a difference?
Yes "English" is English UK. Mine is the same.
I can't comment on the Tango update but I doubt it will affect it. This cab update your doing is an official release as far as I know but it's just that you are forcing the update instead of waiting for Orange to do it.
I was on 7740. This should be the latest build(last time I checked) from Orange on my phone anyways - HTC Mozart.

But without changing the operator,
I mean official from ATT, please advise,
Thanks in advance
Best Regards
Ihab
I'm in New Zealand with an AT&T focus, I got that update two weeks ago I think, maybe longer.

If you have the phone from AT&T then your ROM carrier is AT&T and you will get the 8107 update when AT&T releases it. That does NOT depend on the current carrier. Your phone's IMEI is in the AT&T database, so when Zune checks for update it looks in your phone in the registry for the OEM carrier, which is AT&T. There are ways to change that in the registry, if you're interop unlocked. Read here.

Thanks EnderPspfor your interest,
I know all what you are talking about, I'm pro,
I think it is better to wait for the official ATT update than changing the registry, may be ATT has different and better radio version,
I saw here a lot of guys complaining about slow 3G connections after hacking the registery and update,
I think it is better to waiti,
Any way thanks for your replay

No problem, glad to assist as we're here to help.
I wouldn't bet on AT&T update being better . Actually, if anything, the AT&T updates have "worse" numbers for Radio (and not only) compared to the Rogers, as you can see in several places across the forum, for example here.
Shortly:
Radio Software version: 2103.11.8.1 (AT&T)
Radio software version: 2124.11.9.3 (Rogers)
However, AT&T seem to mod the ROM specific for their network, and while that might be good locally, I doubt it's good overall. But I can't really tell...

Thanks a lot for your replay again,
May be you are right and I sholud change the registry to update,
I'll read more today and take my decision,
Thanks again
Wait?
Waiting for ATT is like waiting for world peace. Good luck with that. I normally wait for the carrier updates but did not with 7720 or 8107. I used the cab sender method, not the registry change method. In either case, you are getting updates off the Microsoft servers.
Thanks for the clarification,
I think I'll change the registery to my operator Vodafone Egypt and get the update
waiting for a good custom ROM from DFT

Yes I'm following it,
But I'm sure that the successor will be better, I hope it will based on the 8107 update
you can try manual update using update cab sender

to be honest with you, I don't trust this method,
flashing a ROM or updating via Zune is preferred,
any way thanks for reminding
sounds like those guys at AT&T don't care about the updates I emailed them about it this what i got back
"I have reviewed your account and the most recent software update was released on 09/27/2011. This was the Windows 7.5 update. If you select settings on your device then phone, it will show you which Windows version you are running. When updates come out for your device, notification will be sent to your phone advising you to update your phone. Unfortunately we are not notified in advance of when new updates are coming out. You can also contact Microsoft at 1-800-642-7676."

This response is not that ATT does not care, it's that they are the last to be notified of updates and the last to know if they are actually going to push the update out; sometimes they wait and skip over an update to have a more significant release. They will not divulge any information until the update is actually released. The only way they will give any hints of an update is if there was a major flaw or demand that customers were looking for ie mango has multitasking custom ringtones, nodo copy and paste. There has been multiple handset receiving official 8107 updates. ATT although the premier carrier for WP7 probably will either wait for the next apollo update or release 8107 offical update about 2 to 4 weeks after the other major carriers (T-mobile) release theres. The reason is they usually incorporate ATT specific features or software with the microsoft update and that ATT is slow in pretty much everything they do haha. You can update with official 8107 update by branding your carrier to rogers through registry edit for the samsung focus. I do not like using cab sender method either.
well i'll wait for them to release it because last time i edited the registry i had install the 7004 roms
