Repartioning SD card without loosing contents possible? - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Wow, What will happen with wp7 if SD cards go bad?
I installed WP7 a few weeks ago with the intention of using a dual boot with Android, so I partitioned the 16gb SD card 50-50 but never got round to trying Android and am happy with WP7, so want to use the full space of the SD card and reformat it so wp7 can use all 16gb available.
Now I have a predicament, I powered off the phone and removed the SD card to see what was actually stored on the phone itself and was surprised that absolutely nothing is stored on the card it basically boots to a new install
Is there any way I can back up the phone (not pictures, music and videos as they are synced on zune)
But what about my contacts, email accounts and apps (rather than having to set them all up again)
If not then this is a BIG hurdle for WP7 to build a system where users cannot back up essential data like contacts and emails from the phone.
Is there a solution to this?

The whole 16gb would have been formatted on first boot of wp7... I tried about everything with my 8gb card to save 4gb but no matter how I formatted or partitioned it including encrypting 4gb with a password before I ran wp7 it still formatted the whole thing.
So you probably already have 16gb available unless you started with a 8gb first then copied the image to a 16gb card like how people set it up to dual boot. In that case nothing you can do but start over....
I have my contacts synced with my Gmail so no matter what I'm running wm6.5,wp7, or Android I have access to my contacts. Just set it up like an active sync account but use m.google.com as the server.

Yeah it is partitioned, Like I said I was going to install Android on second partition but found wp7 ample for my needs, (littel tip if you want 2 parts on your card follow the install wp7 and android dual boot tutorial just make sure the wp7 part is slightly larger than the fat32 one and it should work)
As for my problem yes I guess sycning contacts with google is only option and reinstalling all the apps afterwards (some are side loaded)

How to recover bricked (locked) SD card by WP7

If you have ruined your Micro SD by installing WP7 over it, here is the solution;
First and the fastest solution is to find a friend with a Nokia symbian phone like N8. Insert the card into the phone, phone says "locked SD" press cancel when it attempts for unclock code. Then use tools menu and select reformat. Get along well with that friend if you ever plan to flash WP7 again.
Second solution is to flash a NAND Android build with working USB storage while keeping the same card in the HD2. When flashing Android recognizes the card and creates a 200 MB partition on it. So this seems to be your card's new capacity. After flashing connect to a PC and select USB storage mode. Now you are done with the HD2, leave it connected in this state.
Windows (Win7 in my case) can see and even quick format the card as USB drive. However you need to low level format with flash erase. Search the forum (or use google) and get the program "SDFormatter V2.9.0.5" of Panasonic. Install it to your PC. When you run it, pick your SD drive, click options, choose Full (Erase ON) in the Format Type and "ON" in the format size adjustment tab. Then click format on the main window. Now you can leave and find something else to kill your time. Depending on the size of your SD this may take a few hours. When it is done, congratulations, you have recovered your SD. Depending on the assigned allocation unit size, Android may not recognize your SD, but your PC surely does. in this case, you need to quick format your SD with Win 7 or another program by choosing default allocation size.
The point here is, if Android recognizes the card, which means it can bypass the "Secure Digital" locking mechanism, then SD is not "secured" anymore and we should be able to format it to the proper capacity in the same way it automatically does for the preset 200MB. I guess lock is somehow removed by MAGLDR (or Android) and we only need to wipe out everything on the SD.
I just reflashed Android(NAND), then reformatted sd card and have 14GB space available. Then saw this post. Will do rest to get all of my SDCard back. Thanks.
SDFormatter v3.0 (BETA)
I had the same problem with WP7 "shrinking" my card. After reading this thread, I searched for SDFormatter and found BETA v3.0. Using that, I was able to just put my card into my PC's card reader and do a format, and got my full 16Gb back.
Just make sure you choose FORMAT TYPE as "FULL" (Erase or OverWrite -- I used "Erase" but I doubt it matters), and most importantly, set FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT to "On."
okay, i've tried using minitools partition to try and delete the 200mb partition and then recreate the entire 16gb that is my microsd as well as sdformatter with full (erase as well as overwrite) with size adjustment on but the problem is that i can only see one partition, the 200mb partition, i can't even see the the second partition or whatever that wp7 created
anyone have any other solutions?
When SDFormatter finished formatting your card, you should have gotten a pop-up giving you the results and listing the size of the card.
On that pop-up, did it say 200MB or had it changed to 14.8GB (which is the usable space on a 16GB card)?

Just simply flash WinMo and use HTC's SD Card format tool in it, works fine (I did it myself that way).
When you format, you format a partition.
WM7 creates 2 partitions, the first one 200Mb and the rest of the SD for the 2nd.
To recover the SD:
1/ delete all partitions (I used EASEUS but many other soft will work, Win7 disk managment will not)
2/ create a new partition
3/ format it.
When I can't recover a disk I use a bootable distri of Linux, it's powerful to manage disks (sorry I've lost my disk so google will be your friend).
Great!
worked but had to do it via card reader on computer. Found SDFormatter V 3.0 and set to full erase and overwrite. Took about an hour but got my memory back! Thanks!
Nokia E51 did the trick
Just to confirm that a humble Nokia E51 was good enough to format an encrypted SDHC 16GB Kingstone Class 4.
After doctor Nokia's cure, I was able to recover all the space, I then used "SD Formatter 3.1" tool in order to totally clean up the card, just in case.
Repeated the trick also against a 16GB SDHC Class 10 Trascend, same great result
HTH
Nothing worked
Tried 5 Nokia phones (no E51 unfortunately), some of them ask for a password even if I say Format or delete the password. Some say that the card is corrupted and refuse to format it. Can anyone advise anything. I have an original SanDisk 16 gb SDHC class 2 card from HD2 T-Mobile. It was locked by WP and I cannot use it anymore.
Any advise will be much appreciated !!
OP's advice doesn't work?
Oh.
I assume that you got rid of it by installing Android. And I assume you haven't got rid of your HD2 yet. If second assumption is wrong, you may go and look for a device that can see the card. If only the first is wrong, skip the next paragraph.
Flash WP7 again. Updating it isn't necessary, but the tool may not work.
Download DEV_STORAGELOCK.cab from here. Send it to your device through WP7 Cab Sender. If you don't have it, download it from here. If you don't know how to use it - put the .cab next to the "WP7 Update Cab Sender.bat" file.
Use it. Double-click that .bat file, exit Zune, wait few seconds and press S. It doesn't work? Install the tool from "if needed install this tool" folder. No need to reboot, just go to that .bat file and press S again. The phone will reboot and the cab will be installed. On the phone tap that key icon, tap OK and ta-dah - the card is unlocked. Turn off WP7, take the card out, use it. Optional - get rid of WP7.
Thank you for your reply. I still have HD2 and it runs Mango just fine. The thing is that 16 gb card was the one that didn't want to work properly with WP. So I bought another one (not one ))) ) Transcend 8gb class 4 and it works fine. So, right now I have one useless 16gb card and I decided to bring it back to life. My only concern, If I switch the cards, will I loose any data on my 8 gig card (I have installed all soft that I need, and I do not want to loose it ), or maybe my phone will start to behave strange? I'm really tired of hard resets and re-installs.
Thank you in advance.
PS
That is why I was trying Nokia "trick"
No, the files should be there. But! WP7 may not boot and tell you that you have to use your 8gb sd. If it doesnt - good, you may unlock it. If it does, then... You will need to hardreset WP7 and that deletes all your files. Or turn it off and go back to your working card and look for devices that may see and format your 16gb.

Thanks, will try what you suggested
good job man..
All of this doesn't seem to work for me. I keep ending up in a boot loop when trying the DEV_STORAGELOCK method. The only WP7 version that i can get to work is XBmod 7004 as the HD2 also ends up in a boot loop when i try to update it. My pc won't recognize my card in any way. And the sad thing is that I only have 1 card with me at the moment. any solutions??
Haven't read the whole thread but Panasonic's SD formatter works a treat if you have access to anything that can mount the SD card to a PC.

anyone here who also had the problem that even SD formatter cannot repair the SD card?
well before formating any way to get the data on the SD card back? 16GB SD card is like 10-15 USD its not a big issue if u lose the card, but the issue actually is in the data that we might loose
If u want to get back your data u can use O&O Disk Recovery. This program restored my files from formatted and locked SD card.

[Q] Old HD2 ROM still there?

I installed WM7 on my HD2 that was running a custom 6.5 rom.
After I installed it though, WM7 keeps telling me that there isn't a lot of space. When I checked, there's only 6.5mb free. Is there a way the old ROM is still under WM7, thus taking up so much space?
I always had a ton of space on 6.5 to install apps/games/etc. (I did a "factory reset" of wm7 annnnd then it sent my phone into a never-ending bootcycle.)
So my question is, how do I wipe completely the old WM 6.5 ROM to fresh install 7 and save all of that space?
Also, my old boot image from 6.5 still shows up when 7 was booted.
Check your SD card. Might not be compatible.
There's actually no SD card in there. I'm talking about just the straight up phone storage.
(I'm using my 16g SD card for my Android phone and don't feel like backing up/reformatting right now).
That is why. WP7 requires a sd card to be in the phone so it can use it as if it were internal storage.
Oh gotcha.
If I just have my SD card inserted when I flash WP7, will it do the rest for me?
And does the SD card need to then remain in the phone for it to work properly?

Yes, you need the sd card in there when you first boot wp7 (you don't need to reflash, just hard reset it with card in), and the card must remain in the phone anytime you have wp7 on. If you turn on wp7 without the card or take it out while booted in to wp7, you will have to restart. Also, wp7 will format and make the card only readable by wp7... you can't take the card out to use with a card reader or for anything else. It's only usable with wp7.
yea i saw somewhere that the WP7 regular phones with sd slots make the memory "expandable" but as it formats and uses it in conjunction with the nand partition it is not "removable"...
Which is why the HD2 has a couple of plus points compared to a native HD7 in which the sd card is actually hidden underneath all the casing which you cant access..

[Q] Strange Problems with new SD Card running nand apps2sd

Had my HD2 for over a year now and finally got fed up of lack of WinMo apps, which my housemate with his iPhone loved to point out all the time. So I decided to try out Android a few days ago.
Read all tutorials etc and installed Skink's clean desire rom v1.3 using cwm. Got everything set up and was really pleased with my shiny new phone. Everything was working like a dream!
I decided to get a new 16 GB SD card as my 8GB card was full of music etc. Here is where the problems started...
To get all data onto 16GB SD card:
I partitioned it using cwm using same size partition size as on 8GB (1024mb)
Copied all files on 8GB fat32 partition onto 16GB fat32
With the 8GB SD card in the phone did a backup using cwm
Copied backup onto 16GB card inserted it into phone and did a restore
Now the fat32 and ext3 partitions on the 16GB card and 8GB card should be the same, so everything should carry on working fine when i boot up my phone.
It didn't I just kept getting lots of stopped unexpectedly errors until finally everything stopped loading even the home screen, and I'd have to remove battery. However if I just put my old 8GB card in everything worked fine as before
So after much frustation I gave up on this method and decided to just wipe everything on 16GB card and start from scratch:
Formatted 16GB card
Repartitioned it using cwm
wiped data, cache, dalvik cache
installed clean desire rom from sd card
booted up started reinstalling all apps etc
Now here is where things get very strange, I'd start reinstalling apps and reconfiguring to how it was before and then randomly I'll get a stopped unexpectedly error, like process.android.media or something similar. But it seems as if everything would carry on working, then slowly I get more errors until for example as soon as you click on internet you get an error and it closes.
I believe the problem lies with the sd card seeing as that is the only thing that has changed. I also think this rom stores more than just apps on the sd card. Because after I get a few of these stopped unexpectedly errors nothing is saved on the phone. For example I'll change the ringtone from x to y click ok, but when I click back on change ringtone it's still on x. But I can still play music that is stored on the sd card. After I reboot the phone for a while I can make changes and they are persistent but eventually I end up back at this strange state. It's almost as if I can read from the SD card but not write to it.
Another example when I've got to this strange state, I'll add a folder to home screen, add apps into etc. But when I restart the folder has gone.
If I reinsert my 8GB card and do a restore, I get everything back and it works perfectly. But I want to use my 16GB card, that's why I bought it!
My questions are:
Does anybody have an idea of what is going on when it gets into this strange state?
Does anybody know how to fix it?
Is there some way of testing the SD card?
Should my first method of getting all data onto new sd card have worked?
SD Cards are:
Samsung 8GB class 6
Transcend 16GB class 6
Sorry for the long post, any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Swapping out MicroSD

How can this be done?
I have a class 2 sandisc which I consider slow... I have a class 6 on the way but already setup wp7 the way I like it... Is it a matter of simply swapping cards and resyncing zune? Or will there be apps on the card?
From what I understand the SD card is formatted and prepared in such a way that the SD Card becomes part of the main storage so if you change SD cards it will be as though you have a brand new WP7 install...
Stupid question. But if I swap out cards to a faster, better quality card and start from scratch, would I need to buy all my apps again or will it recognise I have purchased it before like the old marketplace?
As long as you use the same account details all will be well. The apps are linked with your account, not a specific installation.
I used Minitool Partition manager to copy my partitions from my old SD card to the new one. Worked like a charm. Everything (settings and apps) was intact.
Cheers for that, downloaded and installed... I'll give it a whirl when my card comes in the mail...

REALLY!? that will work? Now what if like in my case, I just installed a NAND Android ROM, but used a different SD Card. When I re-install WP7 when Nodo comes out, can I just install WP7 w/o the SD Card in place then put it in on reboot and all my stuff will be there?
I know probably a long shot, but would like to try or know if anyone has tried.

There is a difference between your case and the OP's case. In the OP's case, the ROM knows the old SD card's config (partitions, files etc), so it would work fine as long as the new SD card also has the same partition layout and files. In your case, after re-install, it is a new ROM, so he would repartition the SD card.
I had tried to use a copied card after a ROM reset, but it re-created the partitions. So a ROM reinstall should behave similar. Anyway, it is worth giving a try.

[Q] had wp7 running, switched sd cards, not neither card words

hi really did try searching for this couldn't find any help.
i successfully had WP7 on my hd2 with a 4GB card, had it activated via chat and everything. I wanted to put in my 16GB card and try setting up a dual boot with android.
WP7 gives me an error now "memory card not working" and my only option is to turn off phone (or make emergency call).
it gives me that error with the 4GB card and the 16GB card.
i have tried reflashing it with the 16GB in it and that doesn't work.
I have tried reflashing it with no card in it and that doesn't work.
pretty sure i tried with the 4GB card too.
i know both cards work. the 4GB still has the small partition and the larger unknown from the wp7 install.
any help please?

Some Windows Phone 7 devices include a Secure Digital (SD) card slot underneath the battery cover. If you buy a Windows Phone 7 device that includes an SD card slot, you should be aware of several important differences from other devices that use SD cards:
The SD card slot in your phone is intended to be used only by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) that built your phone and your Mobile Operator (MO). These partners can add an SD card to this slot to expand the amount of storage on your phone.
To help ensure a great user experience, Microsoft has performed exhaustive testing to determine which SD cards perform well with Windows Phone 7 devices. Microsoft has worked closely with OEMs and MOs to ensure that they only add these cards to Windows Phone 7 devices.

I used a PNY 16GB c4 SD card for dual boot, no problem. WP7 is picky though.
4GB is cutting it WAY too close for any kind of functional dual boot. Each OS takes about 1GB. That doesn't leave you much room for anything else.
that's interesting that my pny 16GB doesn't work while yours does.
I tried to setup dual boot but i didn't do something right cause i get a load error when i try to do from the SD rom.
when setting the card up for dual boot, i was watching a youtube video of a person here doing it, at one point the partition they are working on goes from fat 16 to fat 32 but he doesn't describe doing it.
youtube.com/watch?v=jhuR59UXw_4&feature=player_embedded
i'm not sure if that is the prob or what. I ended up converting the partition to fat 32
i got the dual boot figured out using this guide instead:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYL1M40Ntzo&feature=player_embedded
there was some editing i was not doing.
this was with the 4GB. i'll try to find another bigger card that works.
