so ive got an evo. and i use my wireless tethering quite often. and when the galaxy tab came out, i tried to tether it to my phone, and i couldnt get it to work. i have no interest in a 3g or 4g connection for a tablet, atleast not now. so does anyone have any idea if i will be able to piggyback the xoom off of my phone?

It should work the same as any other wireless device. My wife uses her IPAD off my evo all the time.
have you tried tethering a android device to another android tablet? i tried it with a hero and an evo. couldnt get either to work.

I have done it with other android phones ( ie someone sharing my internet) but never an android tablet.

Which did you tether to what. HTC EVO, being designed for tethering has the proper wifi drivers to offer full infrastructure mode tethering. Some other devices, maybe the Hero, originally not being designed for wifi-tethering, only offered a certain kind of tethering that didn't work with some devices. IIRC this was fixed in the freely available Android Wifi Tether app. So if you tried to share your EVO's connection with the Hero, that should have worked. The reverse maybe not so much.
I tethered my HTC EVO to a Viewsonic G-Tablet with no problem so I don't foresee a issue with the xoom.
i was using wifi tether on my evo to provide the galaxy tab with internet. couldnt get it to work. so we tried the wifi tether on my brothers hero, and that would not support it either. im crossing my fingers that the xoom will be able to.
Your wifi tether program might not be working, I had the htc evo 4g and tether to the ipad, laptop, galaxy tab without a problem.

are you using an app or the native tethering btw? theres a few apps that only offer ad hoc wifi which isnt really "meant" for internet. It more of a device to device type thing. while infrastructure is internet to device and thats what you want from your evo. i think i explained that right, i havent slept for like a day. i got too freakin excited about preorder i couldnt fall asleep lol
I had that problem initially with the Viewsonic G-Tablet and with my Kindle. Change the wifi channel in the tethering app to anything but what it is, and try again.
Wireless tether, I've been able to have other android phones and an iPhone see it. For some strange reason barnacle won't show up on a scan with other wifi phones. It's probably going into a different mode that laptops can see but some phones can't.

I think you are right. Android devices can't wifi connect to ad-hoc connections, thus tethering doesn't work. However, if you have hotspot capability on your phone it might be different. Or even different tethering programs that don't do ad hoc. Do these exist?
I could wireless tether the Viewsonic Gtab (pre and post root) to my Evo using Fresh Rom and the included wireless tether. Fast and stable
I'm using the wifi tether app for root users from the android market. And yes it works great with my netbook, work desktop, home desktop, and even my ps3. As well as supplying a connection for a buddies iPhone. But when trying to connect the galaxy tab... nothing. It didnt even recognize it. I guess we will see in a few days. Cause this "will be a dealbreaker ladies" (for those that watch 30 rock)

hi folks.. I have a couple questions.
1. Can I tether (via USB) my A7 to my non-rooted Sprint evo.. if so what tethering app do I use?
2. I have a Verizon USB 3g modem... can I use it with my tablet? What program do I use?
Thanks all keep up the great work..

No on both counts.
So.... rooting my evo.. I love it as it is.. how much better is it rooted.. I am tempted because of free WiFi... but from a functional stand point it is pretty good stock..

I rooted mine with unrevoked3.
The biggest reason I did it was for wifi tethering.
root + Wireless Tether (available from market) = joy
If you are not going to be running custom roms and such, the only difference you will notice is an app called "Superuser Permissions" in your app drawer... And the superficial feeling of superiority over most other (normal) Evo users due to the fact that your phone now does what you want, and theirs still doesn't
Edit: after rooting, only use the tether app for tethering and DO NOT use the HotSpot app that came with the phone. That is, unless you actually want to pay Sprint $30 extra a month to actually be able to use your "unlimited" data plan.
Hi all
Is there a possibility to use a Android Phone as 3G Modem for the Iconia?
If yes, how?
Thanks
Wifi tether works fine between my legend and an a500

Also no problem using wifi tethering on my Nexus S.
Wifi tethering works great with my Vibrant.
My G2 works like a champ when I need it to.
If your phone is a bit older, it will most likely not support infratructure tethering and since the default Iconia can't see adhoc wifi, you will need to root and change the wpasupplicant file. I did that and now I can tehpther my old droid Eris to my iconia.

HTC Inspire (CM7)
I have had no issues using my HTC inspire wifi tethering capability to my A500. But heres an odd question.
As anyone tried to tether via USB? I tried lastnight just for the sake of expermenting and the A500 was on the net, via wired tether. Has anyone else tried this?

Huh. It worked? Lemme try this
Anyone using an Atrix with infrastructure? I'll likely be getting an Atrix later this year (unless something better comes along before then), and would like to make sure it will work with my iconia.

I'm 95% sure it will. The only phones that will tether with adhoc are OG droid era devices. Even then, you can do what I did which was root and change the wpa supplicant so that the iconia sees adhoc.

I haven't done anything to my HTC Legend and the a500 I wifi tethered with was in a shop, so all stock. Legend is running 2.2
My Samsung Galaxy S works with teethering. No problems.

Thanks to barnicle running on my x10 mini pro and replacing the wpa_suppliant sys file (as mentioned on xoom forum post), I got mine running beautifully!
No need to spend the extra bucks on a 3g model, just as I mostly only use my tab close to home or work hotspots
Nice!

Don't know why half of my post was missing but.
I was meaning to say that i do have it working with my X10 mini but, i just want to replace it because i feel cheated by the fact that SE have already discontinued the X10 mini (almost as it was released).
But yeah, Barnacle and a ad-hoc fix works great!
Explain to me what you want to do and I can possibly try it. I have both the Bell Atrix and the Iconia.
I am currently tethering the two when I need to with no issues.
I just bumped up my data plan to 6GB for the occasion!
If your phone plan doesn't support tethering you can do the wpa_supplicant fix and use an app like Barnacle to share your phone's wifi ad-hoc to your tablet.
Still uses data, but your carrier doesn't know the difference between phone data and tablet data at that point.
iconia tab droid tethered to og droid
I spent hours trying to do the wpa supplicant Bluetooth tether and get ad-hoc working to no avail. I finally got it working by following the instructions for the xoom wpa supplicant file replacement with a rooted iconia and rooted og droid except for instead of trying Bluetooth and wireless tether app, I used " barbacle wi tether" to get it working...great app!

Hello, im trying to tether my galaxy tab running 3.1 using my Charge. My tab doesn't seem to find it? Works fine with my macbook though. I've tried with wireless tether and barnicle. Any help would be great!
I use pdanet tablet. It's specially made to tether your phone with your tab. Do some searches in the market.

Is you Charge rooted? My guess is probably, but Android does not support ad-hoc networks, so you have to change the wpa_supplicant file to have it be able to work becuase wireless tether broadcasts ad-hoc.

How is that done?
Not to rub salt into anyones wound, but my rooted Evo 4G with CyanogenMod works perfectly as a wifi hotspot for my Tab.
This alone makes rooting your Android phone so worth it.

Hello everyone. I have just a quick question for ya. I know on the s3 on Verizon (where I came from) the native tether on ParanoidAndroid was free.Is this the same on tthis phone and carrier? I don't wanna use the built in tether if it's gonna charge me. Thanks in advance.
