I like Tasker to specifically activate GPS only when I use maps, and turn it off when i'm done with it. I'm on a big AOSP kick - and wanted to know if anyone figured out why Tasker isn't working on AOSP roms - or I guess at least MIUI.
Let me know

Curious to know about this as well. Just started running SalvageMod last week.
Tasker isn't compatible with gingerbread/aosp 2.3.3 I believe, that may be the problem. Some report it works some say it doesn't idk.

Your Gps already does that. I leave mine on all the time and the only time it comes on is when using maps, navigation, or other services that use location.

just a heads up but the gps doesn't use battery even if you have it enabled. it only uses battery when an app initializes it so in other words when you go into maps it turns on the gps and when you leave it turns it off. the setting in the settings menu only initializes the gps and allows apps to access it. you can leave it on with little to no battery use.
atleast thats how miui works.
p.s. I got this info from the miui developers on miui-dev.com its in one of the threads over there

What he said. Toggling gps is pointless and may even drain more juice as "turning on"may cause an initial tracking drain/update
Swyped from my pants, I'll let you figure out how.
I use tasker with cm7 and it seems like all the profiles I have work fine

Hello guys,
I recently updated my ScreenOn application to a far more stable version, an app that allows you to automatically keep the screen from turning off when specific apps are running. I find it very useful, in fact a friend of mine asked me if there is a way to do it, so I build this app!
It has also support for keeping the screen on at phone calls and on charge,
I know the app design is not great, but it is simple and clean.
The logo needs a great redesign, a friend of mine is working on it.
Any suggestions / ideas?

Not to burst your bubble, but there is a more mature app on the market called Screebl. Give it look: http://bit.ly/ipmwXn
Keep plugging, though and good luck.
well, Screebl keeps the screen on too, but the usage and the whole functionality is completely different.
Screebl understands when you are using your phone only by detecting the orientation.
ScreenOn does notice if you even keep your phone in a specific angle. It does care if you are running a specific app and you want to keep the screen on.
Many of the users find it very useful when reading a webpage, or using the google maps.
We all benefit from choices.
As an android user, I couldn't agree more
We now have better logo!
Check it out here and tell us what do your thoughts:
This is a great great app !! It was just what I was looking for
Thanks for your work Dev !!! Greatly appreciated
Always nice to hear
It's so great. It's what I need.
Brilliant sir.!!
Keep it on.
Tasker does the same thing with much more options
sounds useful to have - thanks
Thank you!
Just what I was looking for. Something simple to keep the screen awake while using Google Maps.
Zhto h Ellada
app is amazinh..That was i'm looking for..Thank you,and keep on,if you need any graphic help just send me PM..
One word...Perfect!
Many thanks
Is it possible to ad an option to set the screen on mini brightness ?
An other app called "keepscreenon" have this option, then the screen switchs to mini brightness without switch off. but it doesn't work well on ICS
TIA
Then you should try another application we have created, the AppAutoSettings!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pinapps.AppAutoSettings
thanks, but i can't find it for my tablette iconia a500, it seams to not be compatible
maybe not compatible with ice cream sandwich
Settings > Locations and Security > Uncheck everything in the first portion.
I happened to find my 'Use wireless networks' turned on one day, and after turning it off, my battery life improved (on the next charge) from (based on screen-on time, seen by checking Display in Battery Usage) 2 - 2.5 hours to 4.5 - 5 hours. That's double!
A battery recalibration is recommended after doing that.
It worked for me but it might not for you, so I don't guarantee any results. This is just my experience and the advice I'd like to give.
If it worked for you, enjoy!

It is always the same with this smartphone things. Mostly everytime you switch off some battery draining stuff, you loose comfort. I often want my phone to know where I am, because of wheather widget, bus/tram widget and so on.
This is good for someone who doesn't use these things.
yeah i always have this enabled because i want weather updates every 2 hours or so and sometimes use it ti check in to places, it doesn't use up that much battery compared to some other things.
Thats true. I didn't notice any difference because I don't use those things.

Disabling 'Background data' in 'accounts and sync' does a lot too .. I mean in the case you don't use it, and you have both wifi and mobile network off, so nothing can't connect anyway.

The same reason why ppl buy iphones....only to fit in.
As reported in some Nexus 5 reviews as well as on the Moves google play page reviews, the Moves app that comes on our phones seems to use quite a bit of battery. If you installed it, you can take a look on your own phone by pulling down settings and clicking on the battery icon.
Yes, I know they talk about how it uses much less power than other ways of tracking movement, but it still seems to be a noticeable amount.
According to Moves help, you can turn if off inside the Moves app settings by turning off tracking. At first I thought it came on the phone, but as others pointed out I installed it from google play..
I don't see any apps called moves? Is it hidden?

I see at least 10% battery drain due to Moves. Can't tell whether this is supposed to be expected.
Runtastic Pedometer has been doing much better for me battery-wise. Can leave it running all day and it is at the bottom of my list. Somethings not working right with Moves.
If you turn off tracking within the Moves app, won't that defeat the purpose of the Moves app? Ouch... Just checked mine and it's at 36%. I think i'm going to remove it for a while.
Hi all, got my Note 3 Thursday and I love it, came from a Z1 and what I love the most is the battery life. I'm a pretty heavy user and so far I'm getting at least 6hrs screen on which is awesome for me!
Anyway I noticed today that even though my GPS hasn't been on its showing on in battery stats

but when I did turn the GPS on it shows its off, it's like it's inverted strangely....rebooted phone still same.
I will back up and factory reset it tomorrow, but wanted to check if anyone else had this before, I did search but nothing came up. BTW I'm stock unrooted.

A colleague of mine is having same problem but with wifi, it's inverted....I will point out though it doesn't seem to have an effect on battery life. Must be a visual bug.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Edit: mine wasn't inverting like yours, just showing the gps on when it was off.
I isolated this down to google maps, I didn't notice a drop in battery, but It bugged me none the less. Once location was blocked in Xprivacy it stopped reporting GPS-on in the battery stats. This might fix it: Try temporarily disabling google maps from app info and see if it stops, then re-enable.

OP screen looks strange and looks nothing like mine: I have GPS on all the time and actually used maps for driving from work today and GPS shows active only when screen was on. With screen off on mine GPS shows off as well, where OP shows GPS active all the time. I wonder if OP has some program requesting GPS position at all times, even with screen off. Maybe some anti theft tracking or showing OP position to friends and family? Maybe same program over rides off setting? I never heard of settings being inverted, but maybe there is some system error.
Thanks for your feedback, after trying a few things: disabling Gmaps, rebooting device, turning off location services still no joy. So before doing a factory reset I reset the app preferences, which you can do but going to settings>app manager>all>press menu and then select ' reset app preferences' and it worked.
So it must if been some app causing this, I don't have a tracking app apart from the Android device manager, which is on, a bit stumped what it was but now glad it's gone as my OCD was going through the roof!! ?

I had the same problem, all my GPS settings were set to off but somehow the Battery stats were showing that the GPS was all time on! I tried many things until I found the real culprit, and in my case was not the OS software but an App that is keeping the GPS on despite closing it! The App (2GIS) is of course related to GPS as it includes navigation among its features. The solution was to close the app and reboot my device instead of deleting that app as I really want it! So I will advise anyone with this problem to find every app on their phone which uses GPS and monitor them, hopefully you will track down the culprit!
Im wondering if anybody is seeing these type of stats in Better Battery Stats. I see the phone is having alote of wakeups by the phone and there are several kernal wakelocks that I have not been able to find information on. Any help is much appreciated!

I do see high Android OS keep awake but it does not seems to affect the battery life much. When it is in standby for hours, the battery level hardly moves.
Battery does barely move during standby.

LOL I like the way you ask after you have done it.
Anyway, to answer your question, it is a feature used by some mobile service providers which in effect allows for a more efficient data service by not having to wake the device up to transfer packets of data. The converse is true if your provider doesn't support it. If your provider supports it, you want to leave it switched on. If your provider doesn't support it, turn it off.
My provider doesn't support it, so I turn mine off. You will have to Google to find out for sure if yours does. Don't rely on the gimps who work in shops/manage help desk calls to know. They most often don't and then just make their answer up.
Google is the best place to check.
I enable FD for the 3 network (UK) as it supports it, no battery issues
