question: vmheap size - Xoom General

I was looking at the build prop and noticed the VM heap in honeycomb is 256mb. Now I only know a llittle about the VM heap but doesn't that seem a little high? Could this contribute to the launcher getting kicked out of memory so often, it seems its always redrawing the home screen

I have been running mine that high to get lwp's to work on gingerbread ROMS, it also helped the honey sdk ports that are out there. Something changed a while back I think.

256MB is the absolute maximum any one process can allocate. Initial heap size is only 5MB and it looks like there is a limit of 48MB in the dynamic increase above the initial allocation. Actually, not quite sure how the 48MB and 256MB parameters work exactly. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Yes, I'd like to know more too. I used 396mb for a week with no issues on my mytouch 4g. It was 24mb in the stock build.

CM6T4 Lockscreen Lag

So I was messing with the VM Heap Size settings and decided to put it up to 32M... now there is absolutely 0 lag to open the lock screen.... amazing, and the phone is a little bit snappier too

Wasn't really any lag that I noticed till I did this lol thanks. Supa FAST
Also helps with stability of jit but I've noticed the lag gone completely from lockscreen. I changed mine to 48 I believe
The latest builds get rid of it no matter what. Rc1 is much smoother than test 4.

THIS. I was actually a bit depressed with the performance of CM6 (test 2 I think) but after changing the heap size from 12 to 32, everything's running VERY nicely.
Thanks for the info, I woulda never tried this otherwise.

[Q] How much ram free do you have when you kill all task?

how much of free ram do you have when you kill all task? just wondering because im running like 6 widgets and i get like around 165mb ram when i kill all task. and 224mb when i restart phone.
176 killing all tasks.i used to have the my toch slide and klling all apps i used to get 299 -324

I get about 185 on virtuous. People complain about sense being a mem hog, but coming from a G1, struggling to keep 20 mb free, even having 100 mb free seems pretty luxurious.
MIUI let me have about 230 mb free at any time, but if I ignored the numbers, I actually didn't really notice any difference in performance. In fact, my average mflops and quadrant scores were still better in virtuous running the same setCPU profiles. I know that's kind of a kernel thing, but still, just goes to show that virtuous is no slouch, even if it uses a lot more memory.
Just my personal experience.

I have 233mb free running CM7 Build #11. I haven't killed all tasks though, just running as normal.

really good point.
when running normal apps (messaging, internet, settings, random ish) I have ~100, if i kill everything i get 175, but that actually doesnt help performance, because next time i open messaging, it takes a few seconds to load back up because it isn't in RAM.
I'm running virtuous and OC'd to 1.49 and it runs perfectly smooth with 100mb free. I can even keep a game like angry birds running in the background without it affecting system performance at all.
on phones that only have 20-30mb free, opening something new can cause slowdowns, but for my G2, there's no need at all to force close things that are sitting nicely in the background.

[Q] What are your settings in "Cyanogenmod settings ->performance?"

What is your performance settings in CyanogenMod7 RC2?
I have mine set up as:
CUP settings (use setCPU instead)
USE JIT (not checked)
Enable surface dithering (not checked)
Lock home in memory (checked)
Lock messaging app in memory (not checked)
VM heap size 24M
how will it be differ one by one? could anyone explain the differences of each?
You should check jit it makes things a whole lot faster and easier for your phone. Enable surface dithering makes image quality better which isn't a problem having it off or on our phones or on gingerbread. I wouldn't mess with the virtual memory heap unless you know what your doing. Don't mess with any setting on your phone besides the CPU really are phone needs no changes.

I wouldn't even mess with the CPU settings. Overclocking it 24/7 can have bad side effects...

Android 2.3 Gingerbread is a ram hog :0

Y does gingerbread hog so much ram at start up?? when i had any froyo rom... each time i booted my phone, i had about 112mb used on start up on any froyo rom.. now on any gingerbread rom, its 220mb and more on start up!! and i also notice the phone lag allot when ever used up ram reaches 280 mbs... and it never gets past taht point.... wich i dont know y because thats just a waist of ram...
unused ram is wasted ram
Froyo and Gingerbread for me is the same when it comes to free ram.
Yes..... but id like to have the option to keep that unused ram for my iser applications...

That really isn't how it works.
Bad.... bescause the os kills apps that id like to have to background....when it can use upto 330mb...but chooses to not go past 280 sadly..
For me it uses about 110 MB which is a lot less than the 280 MB that froyo roms would use. I'm on cm7.1

I think you have it backwards. That's only how much you have left... I could be wrong though. I want to get my panties in a bunch over the principles of not having gingerbread. But to be totally honest after flashing so many roms and testing so many different kernel combos and so on, I don't see the real advantage of having my resources eaten up so that I have a "CRT" screen off animation. I am an adult that needs a functioning phone. I heard way back when that 2.3 is more optimized for gaming. I haven't noticed a difference. Flame away though ye Vibrant owners....
I'm looking at the running tabs of the manage apps section and I have 120 MB taken up with another 210 MB free. I'm running Skype, kaokaotalk, Google maps, beautiful Widgets and Google voice on top of the OS and just opening up the app manager takes up 18 mb itself. In total running apps take up around 60 mb. The rest are cached. I don't think the apps are taking much memory cause they're in standby mode though. Gingerbread has been like a night and day difference compared to froyo IMHO. Much better ram management and faster switching between apps and all out performance. Try cm7.1 I highly highly recommend it. I just started using it a week ago and I'm starting to think Im an idiot for not trying it before. Along with the GPS fix and glitch kernel its much better than bionic 1.3.1 which was what I was using before.

Cm7 lacks hardware acceleration wich means scrolling suvks on the web and no 720p fladh vid playback... wich is something i need.
You can just use opera web browser for smooth scrolling and amazing web browsing overall. I don't know about the lack of 720p playback will check on it though.

You really have no idea how android software manages itself, do you? I'm pretty sure the software is smarter than you are at managing your apps.
Also, the more functions you add in software, the more space it takes up in both rom and ram.

He should probably install Android 1.1 if he wants to go back to managing his apps.
How is performance? People need to stop worrying about how RAM is being used unless they're OS engineers or at least know a bit about how memory management works. People did the same thing when Windows 7 was released because it appears to use more RAM, but overall performance with modern hardware and a good amount of RAM is much better than Win2000 and WinXP. Ideally the OS should use as much RAM as possible and swap things out when needed according to a memory management algorithm that maximizes performance, not free RAM.
Memory don't really matter unless u use browser alot an its annoying opening system panel an see 90 apps open >.<

I have about 220 used out of 339mb honestly I have alot of apps running i do a good amount of web browsing and i have a live wallpaper going as well and i have yet to reach a point where there is not enough ram available ...This is my experience with most GB roms i have used..
I honestly think the biggest problem when it comes down to lag is people do not give enough time to run in the software.. Think about when you flash between different roms alot is changing, in some cases even the entire file system is converted. I use Simply Honey 4 now and the first day it had a little hang up here or there.. now 2 days later nothing lags not even the browser.. This was a similar experience when i tried out CM7 and Malice... Just my opinion..

You're assuming that it's lagging because it's not managing memory as well as it could be, but you're jumping to that conclusion. The processor, the IO with the browser cache, lots of Flash in pages, etc. can all cause browser lag. Try setting Plug-Ins to On Demand so that it doesn't run every Flash advertisement on every page. Flash really bogs down the CPU.

Cm7- Vm Heap Size on Htc Wildfire- Performance optimization

Hello,
two days ago i changed the size of my Vm-heap to 32mb. I was curious after i read in some posts that this could affect the performance of resource-intensiv apps. As i am using navigon-navigation a lot i had to give it a try...
After ive changed it and rebootet the device, navigon works MUCH better then before, track calculation is much faster and the app is much more responsive and running fluent. The difference is highly noticeable. For other apps like my browser i experiecend the same.
I read that the downside of it is that it is possible that apps could be moved out of memory because some other apps now use more ram and so the jumping between apps could be more time intensive. But i have noticed no slow down at all.
(Wildfire is not a fast phone, but i think 384 mb ram is really good for that kind of phone, some other phones like galaxy ace have only 287 RAM with better cpu)
My experience is that a lot of apps running much better know, and for me its a absolute performance enhancement, I would even go so far that i would say it was the best performance-enhacement after overclocking the device. So if you are running resource-intensive apps (like navigation browsing) you should definitely give it a try.
Whats your experience with that ? Ever changed the vm heap size? Noticed differences??
Cheers.
im rocking 32 since i s-off my phone with alpharevx beta, and yes its better for intensive apps (imo) but the one thing i cant understand is way my phone i lagging when i get a call??some times the ringtone is playing and the screen is black, any tips thx

It is indeed said that such lag is due to the 'extreme' underclocking of the processor.
I'm on CM7 RC1, use SMARTASS with 245 as a minimum, and haven't noticed any lag yet..

I didn't want to implicate that the ringing lag is about the low freq., but i noticed that with such low freq's the phone is not so responsive when pulling suddenly the notificationbar, get it out of standby and such things. Never noticed something like that??
I was testing about it too. i settled with 32mb heap size, which i've found to be the best practice. Anything lower would make apps like navigon or opera lag, anything higher, would give me force closes on apps for some reason.
I also tried to experiment with compcache, with the following settings "disabled, 18%, 26%" and i think 26% makes my wildfire a bit snappier, although it might be just a placebo effect, because there's no difference in quadrant/linpack benchmarks.
why placebo effect....the question is how good can a benchmark represent the practial application in daily usage. Anybody?
I tried vm heap bigger than 32mb too. But while running navigon it seems to me not much as a big improvement so i switched back.
The compcage thing will be the next thing im testing.

I have to agree with you Whatever makes my phone "feeling" snappier and faster is good enough in my eyes!
You should really check Juwes Ram optimization thread in the Android development section for some serious performance gain. I flashed it yesterday in CM 7.1 Nightly 144 and the responsiveness boost is quite noticeable.
i agree the synthetic benchmarks are not that important its the daily use performance that mater to me
I have disabled compcache and enabled swap and my phone is snappier than 18%compcache may be Coz of compressing and decompression techniques that slow the process in compcache and scores 3.9 to 4.1 on linpack score with 576 MHz speed...

Hmm i have a swap partition already made just in case and i might try it, but in theory a swap partition (even worse if it's a file) is much slower than the compressed cache due to the SD Speed limitations, unless we are discussing about class 10 cards.
anyone ?
