Audio Quality - Fascinate General

I don't understand this... Before this fascinate I used to use an Ipod Touch for my music/entertainment duties, and I must say this thing blows the Ipod Touch away in terms of sound quality. The stock quality is great, and with Voodoo sound its just amazing. Im just saying its weird that this phone delivers sound with such quality vs an Ipod thats meant for music... Well thats Apple for you.

Well thank you so much for informing us.

iPod's are overrated music players in general. There are much better music players out there, such as the Zune HD, and like you said, the Fascinate.

I bought a 4G iPod Touch yesterday.. I love it.. killer sound quality, especially with my Skullcandy headphones. The Fascinate is horrible in comparison.

To each, his own

it is really all about the files you play and the hardware you listen to them with. If you have nice headphones, the same exact sound file is gonna sound the same on a phone or an iPod with a flat EQ. Throw in some voodoo sound enhancements and other tricks we can do and it is better. It really isn't a difference between devices besides what you do to customize them.

The only reason I use an ipod touch is because of the amount of songs I have. If I could load 50gb of music and videos on my fascinate, the ipod would be gone!
You just got Tapatalk'd

My ipod touch sounds better and more useful as a jukebox than sf.
Besides its an ios device.

Completely stock, I'd say it's a toss up. With the EQ in PowerAMP, the Samsung Fascinate beats the iPod, hands down, even if you use the iPod's EQ settings (which don't do a whole lot, according to my ears). And with Voodoo Sound? That would be like comparing a CD boombox (the iPod) to a high end stereo system. Not even on the same level.

Only problem is that you currently have to stay on Eclair to use Voodoo sound...

Yea.... I love Voodoo Sound, but the advantages in Froyo outweigh the Eclair W/VooDoo. Still the Sound Quality IMO is still Better even without voodoo sound. Im just waiting for Fascinate Froyo Source to be released so we can have Voodoo sound.

Supercurios latest tweets indicate that he's working on making the Voodoo sound driver work as an independent install, which won't require kernel patching anymore. I'm guessing that means that it will soon work for our Froyo builds without needing kernel source code. If so, I will definitely buy it!!!

I disagree. Ipod Touch has a lower quality DAC chipset than the SF does. Plus you can upgrade storage SD card on the SF. I have a 32gb class 10 it is really really fast. Let's not forget you are not bound to any application (iTurd) to get movies and music on or off the SF. Oh and there is no conversion required to place movie files on the SF the iPod only plays m4v sad days. All the music and movie files I have play on the SF ever HD.

I have lots of video files that won't play on my Fascinate, but that's another topic for another thread.

I got Noise Complaint yesterday for testing EQ Poweramp + Voodoo Sound
haha

If you think the fascinate is great for sound, try a bb storm 2 if you know someone with one. I had to boost the preamp on my car stereo when I switched to the fascinate. Also the blackberry seemed to have deeper bass with headphones.. As for clarity though, its hard to decide which is better because both are great at all volumes.

Voodoo sound kernel?

I've been reading rave reviews about Supercurio's Voodoo Sound and was interested in giving it a try but it requires a kernel update. Does anyone know if there is a kernel for the Fascinate that supports Voodoo Sound?

EQ settings are going to depend largely on your headphones. I also use poweramp and for the moment have turned the EQ off so that i can get comfortable listening to the effect of the new sound driver. My normal listening headphones are a set of klipsch Image S4s which frankly for the money ($79) sound quite good, but are a little too strong in the midrange and roll off too quickly up top.
Typically with the poweramp EQ I've been cutting a little in the upper midrange and boosting a little up top to compensate for this, but after a few minutes listening to the new sound driver with the SNR boost and 128x oversampling enabled, i don't think i'm going to need as much boost on the top end.
I'll play with the EQ later after my ears adjust, but i'm really looking forward to Supercurio implementing the EQ in his app so that i can use it as a global EQ for all sources (especially since i listen through the same headphones all the time).
This Voodoo Sound kernel sounds excellent using PowerAmp and my equalizer settings. If you're interested in my equalizer setup, I've attached a picture. I'm using my Grado Sr60i headphones right now, I haven't tried out the new Voodoo sound kernal on my Koss Ksc75 headphones yet, however.

It should, but I don't know how noticeable it will be. It seems that most people say that it's a very noticeable difference, so you could test it and find out.

Funny enough I just bought these headphones today at best buy! I can't agree enough, for the money they are easily as good as my Shures that cost about 60 bucks more. When you find out what you think are good settings could you maybe PM to me? I need to get some flac files on here to set it up properly, but I just don't feel like getting rid of some of my music in order to make space for flac versions. TLDR PM me your settings please!

Once I get comfortable with the new voodoo sound, i'll post up or pm you some settings.
I can tell you that the new kernel has me really questioning some of my source material. Everything without it was pretty muddy, which is why I had to cut around 2k iirc and boost the top end, but with voodoo most if my stuff sounds fantastic dead flat except for a few files which is causing me to to doubt the quality of the conversion.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
ya so far I am pretty amazed at having everything on flat, my voodoo amp at -8 db and then checking just the DAC 1.5 db gain. I'm not sure what exactly either of those check boxes does and it may be all in my head, (there always seems to be a constant battle between my head and ears) but maybe you could enlighten me as to what the benefits are of those 2 check boxes?
From supercurio
"oversampling improve the digital filtering quality of the signal before it's sent to the DAC, and makes the DAC runs at a higher rate.
It reduces the distortion and improve the SNR too a little bit, but mostly, it helps filter high frequencies people cannot hear but only feel and it acts on the listening fatigue."
Also from Supercurio
"Internally, the audio codec reserve some headroom for the signal, allowing to do some processing without reaching saturating levels.
The +1.5dB SNR boost disable this conservative settings using a non-documented trick and now a lot of people tested it: looks like it cause 0 issue!
It makes the sound +1.5dB louder without creating any noise. As consequence, the signal to noise ratio is also improved by +1.5dB.
It's all good"
Okay, with my earbuds, which are not the cheapest, but not super high dollar, I thought this sounded pretty good. Then tonight I plugged my phone into my car stereo (2008 Jeep with factory Infinity premium audio system). H...O...L...Y...C...O...W...! I thought my ears were going to burst into flames. I actually had to crank down the EQ settings in PowerAMP some, because the bass and treble were absolutely ridiculous. I think I've got it set to a pretty good level now, but it still thumps the subwoofer pretty good. And the clarity in general is unreal. I'm hearing things in my mp3s that I've never heard before because the levels were so muddy, even with PowerAMP's EQ. Anybody with decent speakers who has installed this sound fix knows exactly what I mean, and those that haven't most definitely should.
Meh, and to think I was considering $300+ on an aftermarket head unit to get more power, when all I needed to do was add a few lines of code to my phone. I think Samsung needs to fire all their programmers and start over, because they're insanely crippling their hardware with crap code. I think the Galaxy S phones really would be the Android equivalent of the iPhone right now, in terms of cult following, if people only knew how good the hardware really is. Sorry Motorola, but the Droid X has got absolutely nothin' on this phone in the hardware department. You can keep your few extra pixels.

Actually, it looks like supercurio pitched a plan to Samsung for them to use the community (and, of course, help it by releasing beta source, etc) to overhaul their phone software strategy. Good luck to him.
Wow, if he pulls that off, that would be awesome.

Help installing Voodoo Control Plus

I really want to install Voodoo Control Plus however I'm a total tech novice and haven't got a clue on how to get it to install and work. Anyone kind enough out there to give me the quickest most simplest (and least dangerous) method of being able to setup the app? My main emphasis is going to be on changing as little as possible. I would love to play around with root access and custom roms and stuff but in my own time and once I've became a bit more experienced with android phones and the community.

hardware limitations. supercurio was essentially able to develop voodoo for wolfson dac based devices as the defects back then were software based and were solved by rewriting some of the buggy code.
The yamaha dac used in SGSII meanwhile has some critical hardware flaws that can only be resolved at the production/design level by the manufacturer. As an independent user just like the rest of us, all supercurio can do now is to feedback his findings to yamaha and hope they resolve the issues in future batches of their dac...
That's basically what I gather from supercurio's twitter posts and his reasoning for not pursing voodoo sound on the SGSII.
I wonder though if the color banding seen on the sgs2 is also caused by the sharpness filters mentioned in the voodoo project.
I sold the S2 and went back to the original Galaxy S with voodoo sound mod.
The difference is day and night ...... and the Galaxy S has far far more volume for driving headphones.
I did prefer the S2 screen and camera, but the sound was just truly horrible. With no prospect of a sound fix on the Yamaha card and no word of a volume boost there was no point going on with the S2.
Sadly, if playing music is a priority then the S2 is not for you!

Volume+ boosts the volume fine on my SGS2....
All volume+ does is rack up all the frequencies on the system EQ and it sounds terrible.
Enable Volume+ then look at the curve it sets with the equalizer app. It's not a volume boost as such rather an EQ boost that makes the distortion worse!
Keith
FWIW I don't find the sound that bad on the SGS2 using Classic Equaliser and Normal sound effect... yes it could be a touch louder, but it compared OK with my Sony NWZ-S639 walkman which was highly regarded for its sound quality a couple of years back, I also had an iphone 4 beforehand.
I'm not saying the SGS2 is perfect for audio playback, far from it, but it is COMPLETELY blown out of proportion on here.
Bit of a noob question here but I'm finding it difficult to find clear info on this.
I've just switched from an iPhone 3G to the SGS2 and the volume on the SGS2 (with every band maxed in the equaliser) is only about 2/3 of what my iPhone maxed was outputting (nothing too scientific - I just listened to the same track on my SGS2 as my iPhone with the SGS2 headphones).
From reading this I get the impression that this is the highest volume I'll ever be able to get from the SGS2 because the audio hardware is kinda lousy - is that right? Or is there any other way I can boost the output?
Sometimes i think I'm crazy; I'm using the S2 with the lowest possible volume output with my custom molded earphones (almost no resistance) but even with high resistance headphones (eg. a 300ohm beyer dynamic) it's still more then loud enough for me. What bothers me though it that the dac chip is just crap soundwise, low on stereo seperation and an enormous boost for midrange tones; as if the headphone output is meant to be used as a headset for crips and loud talks.
My desire hd had a better sound output (which was still louzy).
can any one shed some light on service mode *#197328640# i read somewhere online but could not find any difference....
[5]audio > [3]WB > ....headset...
This depends on the headphones I can't go Anywhere near half on the sgs its just too loud. If your using high resistance headphones get an amp ?

If supercurious has not time working on a SGS2 version he should give the source codes to sgs2 devs over here!
This is a community after all and the sgs2 screen is more modable than sgs1 because we already have ''background effects'' that we can change

If I were Motorola or HTC or Apple even for that matter I would start buying the samsung speakers and putting them in my phone. I swear i've never heard such a tiny little friggen thing get so loud. If I play pandora for background music and turn it up, it's impossible to hear anything else lol. It's like a mini boombox.
And for the giant apple is, and how they are all about "music" and that jazz you think they would have a free mp3 downloader somewhere?? or that there speaker on their phone would actually put out some sound. I know quiet a few people with Iphones, if I ever don't like what their playing I just turn on mine.

the only problems i have with the music player on this phone has to do with a stock ROM issue causing the sound drivers to not work properly after leaving the phone on for 12+ hrs. a reboot fixes but pain in the ass
Speakers do blow also... Your speaker could be blown. Mine was, it didn't crackle or anything but it only worked at half the volume it should have... It just randomly happened.
Best music player, eh? If you're talking about playing music through the speaker on the player, then absolutely not. It's just good enough to use as a speaker phone, but sound quality through the Galaxy S's speaker is about as weak as you'd expect, meaning no bass to speak of and very little in the way of clarity.
Now if you're talking about as a music player more as an iPod replacement AKA using it with headphones, then I'd say the Galaxy S has the best sound of any system I've used as long as you use decent headphones or IEMs. For instance, if you go the Skullcandy or Jbuds route, the Galaxy S performs about as well as any other music player.
However, if you do some research and pick out a nice set of sub-$100 IEMs, like the MEElectronics M9 series ($13 to $20), MEElectronics M6 ($20 to $30), Brainwavz M1 ($35 to $46), NuForce NE-700X ($60 to $75), or my personal favorite MEElectronics A151 ($50 to $75)? Well, then the Galaxy S will send out clear, unadultered sound that a quality pair of IEMs can turn into jaw-droppingly beautiful music.
Of course, you'll need to do your research, test out different IEMs, and most importantly, find a perfect set of tips that give you the best seal (poor seal = tiny sound and weak bass). You'll also want the latest Voodoo, but use as little processing as possible. No more than the Voodoo AMP if possible.
No, I'm not an audiophile. I just play one on the internetz.

Considering how small it is, it does a really good job. It has a built-in passive subwoofer that fires from the top. Its not gonna blow you away with earth shaking lows, but the bass notes are there and very clear. I am running Flexreaper ROM on my A500 at the moment and using the equalizer app thats included I get the lows dialed in pretty damn well. Keep in mind that I mainly listen to pretty lo-fi punk rock so the bass is fairly minimal anyway. But when I do listen to something with heavy bass, it sounds good.
thanks ill look into getting one then just bought a case with keyboard built in ;-)

Virtual Surround Sound on the N10?

I've seen claims that 4.3 brought surround to our Nexus 10 on multiple sites, I can't check for myself because don't really plan to update until my favorite kernel is compatible, has anyone noticed a difference?

Yes in the Google Movies app you can definitely hear the difference. I played about 3 minutes of Ice Age to check it out and it definitely now has surround in that app. Sound great too. Didnt try with headphones which probably would have had an even better sounding effect but with hardware speakers it is noticeable.

Sweet, does any other app support it at the moment?

Hopefully Archos can add this capability. I use that to stream stuff on my local network.
Did not think I would hear a difference or would experience a pseudo effect but wow. Especially with headphones or headsets.
Having it checked and unchecked makes a huge difference. Tested it on some scenes of ice age (came with my Nexus 10) and it sounds great.
I hope mxplayer jumps on this and integrates this feature!
