I have a question about my phone. Maybe someone can help me. I have the rom RoyalGinger installed on my phone. Before doing so, I updated my kernel and now I do not have the H or 4G symbol on my phone. In my areas, I have 4G coverage and it did show up before. Can someone help me to figure out why when uploading any roms, I cannot see the H symbol? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Simple...Each ROM has a display icon programmed into the .framework and it's the ROM dev's choice/preference of what they put there. They could put a smiley face there if they choose. Get it?
So that in turn does not mean you are not achieving 4G speeds. Just means the disply doesn't say so. Nothing to panic about.
If you want it back you can visit this thread to get it back.

Thank you for the response. It did worked following your directions. Thanks a lot!
IT's weird. On my htc stock sense, I saw the H symbol all the time. Ever since I rooted I rarely see it anymore. It says 3G but my speed test say otherwise as I am getting HSPA+ speeds.
Its just a display front in the framework. Don't worry.

hi guys, i live in a 4G area but i really dont use 4g since everywhere i go i got internet and i don tether (for now) so i decided to go AOSP and i got the miui rom, but it looks that i dont get 3G only shows 1X i tried cyanogen and still the same, then i went into another ROM (azrael and mikfroyo) and it shows 3G but i get the same crappy speeds as in the aosp roms showing 1X, 4kbps i tried different radio/combinations and still nothing, any idea... pls i really need to get this fixed,. thanks
forgot to say i didnt even noticed this b4 since i was always using 4g so now im stuck with an evo that doesnt like 3g
Ever since I got my replacement 004 model Ive had the exact same problem as you bud. Ive tried different kernels, different roms, anything anyone could suggest with no luck. Ive pretty much given up on the problem and live on 4G now.

Update PRL and Profile, get latest radio, PRI, and NV, then try CyanogenMod 6 WiMax Alpha 2, or CyanogenMod 7 Nightly.

all of the sense roms only show 3G never 1x even if you are on 1x. So basically when you are running a sense rom and you are showing crappy speeds you are actually on 1x. The ASOP roms show what network you are actually on. Basically you are in a 1x area and that's why you are getting crappy speeds. Hope this helps. This has been a problem for a long time.

So I'm running Kings Rom 7.3 its amazing. Only I'm having data issues, I'm only getting 1k. I haven't updated my radio yet. I'm new to this. I've only been rooted about a month. I did get the custom lock ring to work and I'm now rocking the blue skull. I can't do the ##3282# because the rom comes with a custom dialer. It really didn't bother me that much until I read the post below about the guy getting thrown off sprint for data roaming. Is it just that easy to update to the gingerbread radio? I know I've seen the link so I know I can find it. I also tried updating my PRL and profile to no avail. Any suggestions or is the 1K something I don't need to worry about. It would be nice to get 3g back. Thanks for any help
Stock sprint roms always show data as 3g or 4g. The 1x was added in so you would know what speed you're REALLY at. If it's showing 1x, then chances are you've been at 1x all along... you just didn't know it until now.
Thanks Bill. I appreciate it. I know it's the King's ROM but you did have something to do with the lock ring and boot screen mods? Right? I was tryna post in the Kings Rom thread but since its dev I'm locked out at the moment. I didn't want to PM the King cuz he proly has mad people blowing his **** up. I would love to thank him too. This ROM is ridiculous!!! Next step flashing the transparent task bar...
Also I flashed the new radio,PRI,and wimax from Caulkin's list. Still 1K. Thanks for the info Bill. I was more worried about data roaming issues from the post below of the guy losing his service. Every now and again I get a roaming notification that clicks off after a second. So I got a little scared
Thanks again you guys are amazing.
Thanks. Had nothing to do with the lockscreen mods though.. just some additional color theming and battery icons. Glad you like the rom. Keep an eye out over there... cool new stuff coming out later this week.
Hi all,
I am fairly new to modding and would like to ask a quick question that may be simple for some of you.
I have a MT4G "Glacier" and I did some steps found on this forum to root and install a custom firmware on my phone. For the past two weeks, I must have installed about 28 ROMS. Yeah, I know... I have too much free time.
Here is the issue. I have not found a single rom that can do it all. With some roms, my 4G speed don't work. With others, my screen flickers too. The last one I installed, doesn't have sense. No matter what I do, I can't get a rom where my 4G speed works, which I can't live without since I use my phone as hotspot all the time.
The rom that I like the most was [ROM] [ICS] Glacier_One_V_1.3 (9/24/2012) because it has BEATS audio, is based on ICS and it has sense 4.0 which looks and works great. I would love to find one that has all the bells and whistles like this one, but where I can still use my 4G speeds and my screen is not flashing all the time.
I understand that the RADIO is what controls the WIFI, cell signal, etc. Can I update the radio, for one that currently works under Gingerbread into this rom without messing anything up?
If so, how will I go about it and what things do I need to get? Please keep in mind that I already flashed back to stock and I am very comfortable with flashing now, but I don't know much about what goes inside the ROM itself.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Manny
Let me jump in before Jack shreds you for ignorance. The radio IS NOT part of your ROM and has nothing to do with your wifi, gps, the space station or anything other than cell reception (as much as software can). Changing it can be beneficial, but is also dangerous. A failed install means a permanently broken phone. Explain what you mean about not getting 4G.

Appreciate you saving my skin there. Sorry for my ignorance.
What I meam by no 4g speed is, my signal bar on the top right of the phone, almost always reads 4g and get fast browsing speeds on my phone. I can tether my internet to my laptop and it runs great on my stock Ginger.
The moment I go to custom ROM, I can only get 3g and is not just display issues, because the speed is slow based on speedtest.net.
Makes sense now?

Hmm, well, I'm not aware of speed issues on ICS, at least not anymore. However, if you're having issues with it you might try a Gingerbread ROM like Android Revolution HD or Insert Coin.
If you plan on sticking with ICS, you might try the "3G Hacks" in Pimp my ROM. 3G and 4G run off the exact same radio, but a value or two in the ROM may, I repeat MAY, affect the speed. What kind of speed differences are you seeing? Are you comparing these at a similar time of day?
Also, holy crap. You said CFW. I haven't seen that term since my old PSP hacking days. Good times.
Sent from my myTouch 4g using xda app-developers app
I am comparing at relatively the same timed, days and locations. Office versus home, etc.
I will flash againg ICS and test your recommendations. Thanks for your help.
Compare 10 runs back-to-back, same time, same day, same place. That would be a good basis to discuss something.
For all the rest: no ICS ROM will work properly for you. If you want stability - drop to Gingerbread.
About the radio - estallings15 already answered you. You're looking in the wrong places.
"4G" mark on the signal bar means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on this phone. 4G means something where "4G" stands for "LTE", which is a different set of bands and different transceivers. This phone doesn't have LTE, nor does T-Mobile AFAIK. So it's just an icon. But - make sure you have "H" showing instead on custom ROMs (HSDPA mode). It should show up when the phone starts actively using data.
This makes perfect sense. I really appreciate your prompt response and suggestions.
Back to flashing.

I suspect it's the radio. I keep getting crappy signal apparently with the Panache stock recently. It's taken to a new level now with no service out in the middle of the street. Is there anything I can do than try to switch radios? Even right now, I keep getting switched from 3G to HSPA+.

Radio Issue
I have a MT4G running 4.2.2 on LiquidSmooth and I cant get anything over 3g even in areas where I previously had awesome 4g service (on stock 2.3.4). I checked my md5 and it does not match any other radio/baseband's md5. I'd really like my 4g back but I also don't want to brick my phone. Currently my md5 is showing up as 60de66c8b88d27b9a3bbae385b7f71dc and have yet to find one anywhere to match it. I am fairly new to rooting androids ( I had an iPhone for like 5 years and I just got fed up with the limitations even when it was jailbroken) I read a forum about extracting the radio.img from a stock rom but I was still iffy about the md5 not matching. Absolutely any advice would be great. Thanks in advance (and apologies in advance if I somehow posted this in the wrong place or something)

"4G" and 3G use the same hardware. None, I repeat, NONE of the available radios break "4G." What you're seeing is a difference in the icons used. Whereas the stock GB ROM simply shows "4G" when using HSPA+, the AOSP variants show 3G when idle and switch to H/H+ when data is being used. There is nothing you need to change. It's a gimmick that often evokes a placebo effect.

Thanks for the quick reply and thank you again for clarifying that. But when I ran speed test my download speed is showing around 350kb/s when I usually get around 1.5 mb/s. I recently asked my friends in the area that also have t mobile and they said they've experienced a decent loss in speed/signal just in the past month or so. So is it possible that another baseband might increase my signal strength at least? Because if it's not possible/effective than I feel like I'd be wasting time trying to fix my md5 issue.

If you're worried about the radio, download a different one, verify the md5 ON THAT DOWNLOAD and flash it. Feel free to report the speed difference, if there is one.
I've read up on this and understand it is supposed to be normal, but man does it make my phone so much worse. Every single time a page loads it has to switch from 3G to H. My reception seems like it sucks so bad because of this. Sometimes it doesn't switch. I get good bars everywhere I go, but it feels like I have terrible reception.
I've never understood radios and such. I'm rooted with the stock rom. Would this be better if I tried cyanogenmod with a different radio? There has to be a fix for this issue.
If you solve this for me, I'll kiss you through the internet.
I don't think kissing anyone over the internet would make them want to help you any more
Its how the phone works, its supposed to switch to 3G to H. H comes on when data is more active.

the bars are for your gsm radio, telephone calls. they dont give you an idea on data speeds. do a speed test to see how good of a data connection you have.

I knew the bars are for phone calls, but I'm in the city of Chicago and have a hard time believing my data is as bad as it seems. I'll have plenty of times where it shows 3G connection and doesn't switch to H, therefore no data comes through. I've had plenty of times where I didn't believe I wasn't getting data, so I reset my phone and sure enough - data!
I do believe something could be wrong with my specific phone. I might need to try a full reset or flash cyanogenmod. I just didn't want to do that. Especially without checking with you genius's beforehand!

The radio is .48.. Baseband is Radio. You can go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227 and try out other radio to see if you get better reception.
If you're in a TMO 4G LTE area you can try activating LTE to see if you'd like it any more.

I can do that, but I'll first have to figure out how to do it. For some reason my drivers say they don't work and it won't let me flash clockwork mod. I was going to make another post about it after I figured this out. Do you think radio could be the issue?
Also, I am on Tmobile, but I thought LTE didn't really work since it was ATT band 4 or something and only very specific areas had it?

Well, I just found out my APN was the one used when you are on LTE. I changed it to the non LTE version and will test over the next few days. If that was my problem, I'm going to be upset at the Tmobile lady who put in that info.
Please do let us know if it's any better after using the epc APN.
If you flash to the .33 radio, the LTE will turn on and it's very good at holding a data connection. It's just when it's not available and my phone connects to hspa+. I have similar problems as you. My signal indicator works great and its blue but no internet. I'm wondering if i'll need to keep switching apns. I hope not.

Well, I did my commute this morning and there really was no change. It could be a combination of poor data reception areas and slow switching. I'd like to try to flash a new radio, but I don't know how. I can start a new thread about this, but I'll at least mention my problem here. I installed the Nexus 4 Toolkit and went through all the steps to make sure the drivers were installed correctly and such. I did this a long time ago when I rooted the phone. But something is wrong and it doesn't let me flash clockworkmod. It tells me to go through the steps again, which I have tried.
Is there a way to flash a new radio without clockwordmod?

Lte is amazing in Chicago but not as strong in Chicagoland. However, hspa+ is garbage in Chicago but better in Chicago land.
As for cwm, I prefer twrp. You can just download goo manager from the app store and it will install twrp for you. As far as I know you need to use a custom Rom that supports the older radios or else your calling might mess up. I use aokp.

I actually tried that a few weeks ago, before I knew what I was doing. I wasn't able to flash it because I didn't have a custom recovery. I'm glad I went to CyanogenMod though. It seems to be faster and there are little things that make it better than stock.

Yeah CM has a lot of nice additions, Paranoid is pretty slick...been a fan of that one on multiple devices. It's built around swapping ui dpi...so you can set your phone to act like a phablet or tablet per app...ie...make gmail look like it does on your tablet on your phone. Let's you drop out the soft keys and replace them with a pop up slide wheel/etc and has a lot of the AOSP and CM features like the quick notification toggles etc.
