Based on my own experience, as well as many requests in various ROM release threads, as well as many other comments in various ROM release threads...
RFS please.
Any speed gain from EXT4 with no journaling is made moot the first time one has to wipe and re-flash, even with backups (maybe especially with backups, which seem to cause some issues as well).
I like speed, I overclock my computer, my video card, and even my phone, but I need stability in my phone. I need the dependability that if my phone crashes it isn't going to force me to do a wipe and re-flash half the time. So... suppress your inner flash-happy geek enough to realize that stability and dependability are important aspects of a phone and at least give the option of an RFS file system.
You are in the minority my friend,90% or more that use EXT4 have no problems at all,,,I don't trust no journaling 100%,but I havnt had 1 problem running it for almost 3 months; And you can enable journaling...

Same here... I haven't had a single problem on any of the ROMs I have run here. I have been enjoying speed + reliability.
I understand what JMMusic is saying though...the whole premise of having a custom ROM is that you can modify it how you want. Maybe RFS should be an option for those that want it. I do think that EXT4 with journaling enabled is the best route though.
I personally agree with OP. I'd rather have stability over speed in my phone. I? Ok with just ext4 journalling over rfs, but I would rather have journalling on.

I cosigned OP, this is the reason I'm not flashing anymore custom roms now. Everybody is on this ext4 banwagon. I'm good, they can miss me with that. I've never had problems out of the ordinary from RFS. I can go on for days about ext4. When I do flash a rom it will be CM7 before anything now.
I hate "Top Flight Security Mods"
Add me to the jouraling ON list. I need stability more than I need the highest quadrant score.. Re-flashing gets old when your supposedly great ROM decides to bork itself every couple days.

Lucky you. I flashed a certain popular ROM. Everything was amazing...for a few days. Then it screwed up. Flashed it again. Everything cool. Couple days later it's crashing again. This process happened over and over. I NEVER had this problem with stock or stock minus bloat or stock minus bloat plus OC kernel. Only when using an EXT4 ROM with journaling turned off.
Coincidence? Not.

Stock ran very well for me. The only reason I went with a custom rom is just because I could. If I do start having issues such as data corruption, then I probably would go back to stock. So far though I guess I am lucky...I just hope I stay lucky for another 15 months or so when I'm eligible for my next upgrade.

That's why I gave it a go too. I didn't fare so well. Performance was amazing, but it never lasted. You could almost set your clock to the system failure. I'm not the only one, either.
No RFS for me but EXT4 with journaling enabled would be nice.

I have to respectfully disagree here - apples and oranges. Huge differences between an OS and FS here. Yes RFS is older and slower but does seem to be less prone to corruption. Luckily I have 2 phones, the epic being for personal use so I don't mind the risk. But if this was my business use phone Id want the functionality of custom roms, and the slow but sturdy filesystem. Just my .02....

I don't know if I'd go that far. RFS is compatible with FAT so it can be read in windows. Not having to connect a USB cable to copy files from/to your SDCard is an advantage over EXT4.
Of course, while writing this post, I got curious, searched and found ext2fsd. Which might provide a solution to the ext4 'disadvantage'. Haven't tried it though.

I don't understand. How could you transfer files on RFS without a USB cable? I did then, and now, with an FTP server. Was there another way?
I need stability over performance. That is why I've stayed with stock. I would be using SRF 1.0.1 right now if it had journaling enabled. Then again, I haven't had the time to do the research yet on how to enable it after the fact.
Sure it's nice to frequently backup to have a snapshot handy, but that should never be a requirement to maintain stability of a custom rom, IMO.
The lack of journaling still doesn't detract from the good job the ACS crew has done thus far with CIQ removal and whatnot.

Just saw a tweet from DLife about an improved Froyo 2.2. Anyone try it yet? I'm not sure I want to do a wipe if its not really that much improved.
EDIT: link http://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/02/download-new-android-2-2-droid-incredible-build/
EDIT EDIT: My recommendation is that you don't use this build. It lacks the stock wallpapers except for the red swirl. It lacks the stock ringtones, AND I'm not sure it even has Flash 10.1. Some sites don't seem to work now that I installed it and I'm reinstalling the previous 2.2 leak instead of this one.

So far I agree.... Not worth wiping out everything I've done with the first leak! Unless someone can convince me otherwise.
I do have one question though.... Shouldn't there be some way to update the first leak with a new version in the future without wiping the phone? They should have mostly all the same base right?

+100. I've worked out all the bugs that affect my daily usage: 3g hotspot working, no 0's on my Gmail, still pulling 1250-1300+ on Quadrant, market/browser work beautifully. I'll need to see some solid improvements/benchmarks to make it "worth" switching.
Though for posterity's sake, for those concerned about wiping, since it's a 2.2 -> 2.2, I would think a proper titanium restore would work without much issue, app-wise.
Opposite
I am the opposite ... I see no reason to apply a beta radio and a beta pre-release (even one from yesterday) at this point, especially if its going to be a pain in the butt due to radio reflash and app reinstall. Would just as soon wait in hopes that unrEVOked can root the real OTA. Would MUCH rather go thru the pain and effort (and danger) using VZW's release.
Have you gotten Ti backup to work with 2.2? I had issues. It worked to restore my apps from 2.1, but since switching to 2.2 I could do a backup. I remember there being some issue but not what it was. I haven't tried again since.
As for the upgrade, I'm only using the stock Froyo rom and I've found some bugs in it when using Seesmic and Astro amongst others. I think they need to upgrade for 2.2 compatibility before I upgrade the rom.

Did you do a "Backup all user apps + system data" and then "Restore missing apps + all system data" or did you just do apps? I'm new to best practices of Titanium Backup... Thanks!
I just do app+app data. No system crap...it isn't that hard for me to add the 4 icons and clock to the screen and setup some ringer preferences...even with all that it took me 5 minutes. Some people may have insane screens full of widgets and apps...mines pretty simple. Also I already fixed my build.prop Plus I only have 2 paid apps...titanium and phonemypc and I already pulled the apks from my phone to install manually without the market anyway. So I dunno.

Damn. I'd have to go back in and remove all of the bloatware, reinstall all of my apps, and everything else. Not sure I'm up for a minor fix.
Just installed it.. I have to say.. its THE BEST ota leak so far. It's far more stable than the first leak... and it seems like it doesn't drain the battery as much..
Most recent ota leak is a nice improvement over first 2.2 leak. And yeah all you guys saying full wipe is painful.... titanium backup is awesome and can have you back from a full wipe with everything restored and intact within minutes. This 2.2 is faster, fixes most of the problems of the first leak (yes market still needs the fix... so what? Easy easy fix....) and imo is very much worth the upgrade. But seriously only once you know how to extract the most from titanium....
I am more than happy to help anyone with advice on titanium usage or whatever.... pm if you have questions or need help

I've got it down to about a half hour doing a Titanium restore. I just use that to restore the apps and the data.
What takes most of the time is getting the screens set up again.
Still seem to have problems with the Market however... intermittent freezing, hangs on "downloading", etc.
So I just got my Fascinate last week. I'm new to Android and I'm trying to get a grasp on what the popular/necessary apps, widgets, roots, launchers, etc. are...... So here is the question- What did you do straight away when you got your phone? And what do you wish you had done straight away?

First, before you do ANYTHING, read about what you're doing, what the repercussions are, and DON'T do anything to the OS of your phone if you don't know what you're doing. That being said, there's more than enough people around here willing to help if you ask educated questions, and use the search function, as a lot of questions have already been answered. The above thread is excellent reading as to how to get started.
IMHO, Root, install a clean (de-bloated) ROM of your choice (many of which can be found in the Fascinate-->android development sub forum), and then if you want install a custom kernel, voodoo enabled or not, overclocked or not. Just read a bit, it'll all become clear very soon...
Welcome to a Fascinating world.....ugh that was a terrible pun.

I came from an Omnia too. Reading these threads makes me wonder how many of the guys complaining about the bloat/lag had ever seen any WinMo phones...
In terms of removing bloat, a really easy way to hide it is simply use LauncherPro from the market. Aside from being crazy customizable, you can hide apps you don't want to see from showing up in your app drawer. Not exactly removing, but as mentioned baby steps can save you from that sinking feeling most of us have had...

Amen!!
I still pine for ListPro and Pocket Informant, tho.
lots of good information here. The only thing I would add is that you should probably steer clear of Voodoo for the time being. Yes, it does really speed things up however do to the fact that it changes the filesystem type of your /data partition it no longer allows you to perform full backups (Nandroid) of your phone unless you disable the Voodoo lag fix which has rendered several phones (including mine) unable to fully boot without restoring to stock.
Voodoo will NOT brick your phone but anyone considering using Voodoo should be prepared to lose all their data and know how to flash back to stock. If you are not willing / able to accept that risk I highly recommend avoiding Voodoo - at least for now.

I just got my droid 2 in the mail today and I'm disappointed, to say the least...first off I'm comin over from tmobile where I've had nearly every phone they have released over the last 2 years. The first thing I thought when I booted this droid 2 was how familiar evrything looked. Then I realized they put motoblur on it(boo!). So I feel like I'm using a moto cliq again...I thought that since this thing has a 1 ghz processor it would run a lot smoother than the cliq, but that has not been the case. It takes almost 10 seconds for the camera to open which is unacceptable. It hangs up doing the simplest things, such as opening and closing the app drawer. I planned on getting the droid x, but after reading several side by side comparisons, I decided on the 2. I hate to say this but I'm really thinking I made the wrong choice. I believe this to be a nice piece of hardware, just not right for me....
Anyone have any suggestions to make my experience better? I'm open to rooting but only if there is a 100% fully functional rom out there...my last tmobile phone is a vibrant and I don't know if you guys are aware of what's gone on over in those threads the last few days, but its been interesting to say the least

Um not sure I can't remember what it's like to not be rooted. lol.
I think you either need to be rooted or use ADB.
As for launcher's I've heard good things about LauncherPro but I use ADW. and Home switcher to set my choice to default (so the home soft key doesn't go back to stock.
You can wireless tether for free but as of yet the only infrastructure mode (as opposed to Ad-hoc) you can get is through the Verizon app but thankfully someone found out how to hack it. (check the Droid 2 Information Directory in Android Development for the D2)
Hey guys, so I rooted and bought one of those overclocking apps from the market. I know that quads and linpack mean nothin to some people, but I like to use them to gauge my own phones performance. I overclocked to 1.2 and my benchmark went from 865 ms to 675. My linpack is almost 17. But, my quads are down to 800! What the hell is that about? Are those overclock apps just crap?

Can you at least read data with apps such as Gallery and Astro File Manager? On my Droid Incredible I can copy pictures and ringtones from my computer directly to the internal memory (emmc), but with the Droid 2 I can only mount the SD Card. This is kinda annoying...I've been searching old threads but haven't found an answer.
I can move them between internal and external sd, but that's a freakin headache. On my vibrant when I mount sd to computer, I get two windows that open and I can transfer directly to internal from pc. I can't believe they (motorola) really give you 8 gigs for apps only. Everything is saved to external by default. Except apps.

Are you serious??? Wow, I'm glad I decided to stay with the Dinc as my main phone. So do you use any particular app for moving stuff between internal and the SD card? Or you do it within an adb shell? I don't see the point of making the internal memory only available for apps...I would never need that many space for apps...I rather use it for music.

Well here's my two cents...gps lock is not fixed...root is currently impossible to retain with the stock kernel. You need some kind of modified kernel to keep root. Keyboard lag is still present unless your rooted and install a fix.
These above listed items do have remedies, however they require a custom rom or multiple patches to fix.
That being said...if you always run stock there are no additional negatives. Gingerbread is much faster, smoother and cleaner imo. Take it from there.

I think both of these statements are wrong based on my experience.
I have root and have no modified kernel. I think you can keep root without a fix, what you can't keep is a custom recovery program (like CWM).
I have had no keyboard lag so far. If it is there, it is definitely MUCH better than the previous version.

I have backup with Mybackup and Titanium, so I am more than happy with my backup options. ROOT itself is very important to me (and a lot of other people), so given the option I would rather have root and no custom recovery program, as opposed to a custom recovery program and no root.
A very important distinction to make.

No, just unnerving that they'd have such a forceful recovery program. Samsung has been sneaking little locks in things lately. Odin can break them but it's frustrating that they've gone down this road.

ah gotcha.
there really is no point in staying on froyo ec05 now. the only thing i could think of that would keep me on it would be SRF1.2 but since you didnt mention she had that i would say just update it for her. Things are quicker, snappier. The OS is built to be more stable and just all around better for the phone than the froyo version was.

Keyboard works so damn well!! Seriously its never worked this well for me. I'm running the deodexed build with nubernel so I dunno if there are any key lag hack built in or not.
Cd's or tapes?
My main beef with my phone has been fixed with this update. Music playback was annoying. Didn't matter if it was stock player or PowerAmp, I would get a weird hiccup at about 3 seconds into every song. On top of that, I could hear some electrical crackling when doing certain things while listening to music, especially while using wired tether. Gingerbread has eliminated it and music playback has been flawless for me all day so far. Not even a little click when the screen goes on/off anymore.
No doubt this phone still needs to be rooted with some patches just to make it useable. I'm disappointed samsprint took this long and still left so many of the original issues that shipped with the phone on eclair.
Basically it has the exact same widgets and touchwiz as always but with the underlying os updated to gingerbread.
I was hoping we would get the sgs 2 version of tw with the new widgets, and see the keyboard, and gps working out of the box.
Also the browser is pissing me off. It removed the zoom buttons and double tap isn't zooming in anymore...?
Its not all bad. With the gps fix (flashed in cwm) I'm getting better gps locks than ever before on this phone. Also the system as a whole is a bit faster. Unfortunately you will still make tradeoffs by updating.
Edits:
Tap to zoom works on non-mobile websites in the browser. Using my /data hack I was able to change default text size also.
Notification LED does in fact appear to be fixed...but there is a very long time between blinks (something like 20 seconds), would be much happier with a 2 sec blink. It is so slow, I thought it was not working.

Still waiting on the offical version.
But I have been running swiss cheese samsprint for months with no issues at all. Everything fully functional.

You have to be on EC05 to get the update. It wont work on EE03.

Not theory. The lock patches on Galaxy Tab are a pain. So happy I got on In Paris so quickly.

So I wont even get the notification of an update?
I'm not sure If I even want it considering I have been using this ROM with no issues.

No u will not get the notification but I would recommend updating to the latest since I can say it will be more stable than one of the oldest gb builds out for this phone

Sorry I forgot to mention I put srf 1.2 on it before I sent her the phone.
Like an intelligent flashaholic, when I first rooted my phone, waaaaaaay back over 2 years ago, the firs thing I did was make a backup of my stock/rooted setup, then saved a copy on my computer. Every few months, I'll nandroid back, update any apps that need to be, then make a new, updated Backup.
Lately, I've been having a lot of problems with my phone, trying to run Jellybean ROMS, which has been a disaster. Even ruinning Kendall's Jellybread ROM, I have some issues with lagginess, occasional Force Closes, etc.
Yesterday morning, my phone was basically not usable, and not having time to play with anything because of work, I just flashed back to my stock/rooted ROM, updated it and have been running pure stock since. The weird thing is, it's the best my phone has run. Smooth, fast, everything working (Of course this is still Froyo, but still). It's just really ugly as hell, but it's amazing how smooth everything is.
OK, time to flash a ROM.....

I think if the stock ROM wasn't so ugly, then we'd have no use for customized ROMs. It's one of those things that allows us geeks to shine...
You know I have never even seen the stock froyo rom. Evo had already upgraded to gingerbread by the time I got mine. Maybe you could let me try out your stock froyo rom? ROFLMFAO!!!!!!! Heck maybe someone out here has a cupcake or donught I could use also. Then we could have a retro rom.

Hey hip, got a suggestion for your next flash.
Do your backup thing, wipe as usual, then flash rom.
Only this time before you reboot, push your log to sd. Then view it after everything is done...
Reason im saying this is mine would be fine then not...when I pulled the log fron recovery it actually showed that I had bad memory blocks an it was unable to repair/format/fix them..
Now my phone was and is usable still...but I cant flash all the roms. Only one that 100% worked was mazwoz.
So its just a thought bro, figured I'd share what I found. And without pulling the log I would have never seen it.

I pull the log most of the time myself and I also have bad blocks in multiple partitions. I have yet to have it cause any issues with any of the roms I flash. Also can I help you take over the world?!! Love me some pinky and the brain.

Lol, sometimes I forget that signature is there cuz I cant see it on Tapatalk. One of the Nocturnal guys made that for me.
Anyway, the roms would mostly flash on my phone. But some just didn't. I was testing rom for soap, tronit, an shaggy an none booted for me but worked fine for others.
Then I flashed say jmz rom an it worked fine. I started to notice that things weren't working.

Thanks. I was actually very concerned, but running the Hybrid MIUI we're releasing and it's fast as hell
Yes I mostly use the app so I don't get to see the cool signatures. Since I started doing the dev work I am on the PC more and must say there are a bunch of cool ones out now.

Heck if you think it is fast now just wait I have a couple more tricks left to pull out my hat. You ever run an odexed miui? Yes I will release a first ever (that I know of) odexed miui rom. This thing is crazy fast and get this all the apps that I preinstall will also be odexed so it will rocket like you have never seen. Just stand back and be amazed at the fastest miui to ever grace the og evo!!

Are MIUI mtz's universal or device specific?
I they are universal. I have some on my pc that i used on both the og and 3vo that my ex gf had.
FYI I dumped the preinstalled ics theme. So now any theme will install for the die hard miui user and the black ice mtz will be installed on the sdcard. The jb launcher is no longer default you can choose on boot which one you want. Now to get the ICS effect you go into settings themes and choose black ice. If you use the jb launcher you will need to go under launcher settings and reboot launcher. Now everything looks ics even the lockscreen.
