[Q] use ATT laptop SIM in ATT GT - Galaxy Tab General

I have a laptop that has a ATT SIM card with data plan. I tried to use it with my ATT Galaxy tab but it didn't work! I easily reach my 2GB limit on my TAB and I was hoping I could use the one in the laptop since I rarely use it. I did SIM unlock (although both are ATT SIMs) yet didn't work.
Any ideas if this can be done and how?
Thanks

Hello.
Although not specific for you, I've done similar with my Canadian Bell Android phone with unlimited data plan, and Bell Galaxy Tab with pay per use plan.
I now have galaxy tab with unlimited data plan, provider is none the wiser.
Your issue might be the apn difference between the tab and the apn set up on your laptop's sim plan.

Thanks for your reply, but how did you do it? or it did work right out of the box without any adjustments?

Anybody have an answer or work around would be much appreciated

Find the APN settings from your service provider for the sim.
Then install APNDROID PRO and enter them settting from above. Install the sim and your laughing! !!!

[Q] Use AT&T iPad SIM on T-Mobile Galaxy Tab?

Ok, so I would really like to transplant my micro sim from my iPad, seeing as though I got the $29.99 unlimited plan & pop it in a T-Mobile Tab. Would this work? I've checked & the T-Mo Tab does support At&t's frequencies...
It's not a micro sim card, just a regular SIM. So not sure if you can get an adapter to make it fit?
It's a regular SIM card. I tried but the tab asked me for the unlock code. I guess that's another dead end. I talked to tmobile and they told me I have to wait 40 days for the unlock code. Any ideas?

1) you need to get around T-mobiles SIM lock
2) the tab is 2G quadband, so GPRS will work. But you won't get 3G on AT&Ts frequencies
flashing a rom should disable simlock. am i right?
no it will not

There is an unlock guide in General now for this.
Just FYI.

Have you set up the AT&T APN info?
Settings/Wireless and Networks/Mobile Networks/Access Point Names/(menu New APN) then enter the AT&T network info, which you can find with a quick web search.
Until you have that information, it can't connect to the internet. The T-Mobile APN is the only APN that device knows at the moment, and even that is hidden when using a SIM from a different network.
to get your tmobile Tab to work on att u have to settings>wireless and network>mobile network. then change Network Mode from AUTO to GSM Only
then you can use this on ATT with EDGE internet
What about putting an iPad microsim with adapter in the AT&T galaxy tab? Would any tweaking need to be done? Would 3G work or just EDGE?
I have no interest in voice on the G Tab.
thanks
I did some checking and was able to verify that the iPad microsim in the AT&T g tab will work. The poster didn't specificy if it was 3G or edge but I'm guessing it was 3G.
You will need to use "broadband" as the APN name for the iPad SIM data plan.
You may also need to choose "Supl" as the APN Type, had this issue with the Dell Streak,
Edge would work until i went to use Google Maps then it wold disconnect.
You will also want to set to 2G only or GSM as the US TMobile Tab doesnt have ATT frequiencies for 3G

ATT SIM Card

Hello,
I have an ATT data plan that I use with a wireless card. My question is can I just take the SIM card out of my wireless card and insert it into my Galaxy tab? Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't think it's that hard to find out. Just pull it out and insert it in.
I think he is asking for permission
Actually I should say that I don't have the tab yet but wondered if this would work. Anyone try it?
I have the tmobile version. I popped my sim card in and got 3g but redirected. I think that there isnt a restriction you can pop in your sim and start using it. If you want to use it as a phone you need to flash the firmware. check the att thread
No... This did not work effectively for me when I took the Samsung Galaxy Captivate (SGH-I897) SIM from AT&T and inserted it into the Tab... After talking to AT&T for several hours and even asking them to validate with Samsung we determined the following:
1. Audio calls using the 3G network is not possible at this point in time.
2. Needed to enable a separate data plan with AT&T and a new phone # using the SIM for 3G data (2GB/mo = $25 + I added the unlimited messaging = $15 /mo).

It will work just fine. At least it does on my AT&T Tab with Euro JK5 ROM.

Well, if you have hours to spend for AT&T rep, why don't you spend some time reading up from this forum? Here is a good place to start http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847273
Of course, it's not supported by AT&T but then why buy the tab if you can't do sh*t about it? If that the case, I would prolly buy an iPad and feed Steve Jobs so he could be wealthier
What the heck is wrong with some of you? Why don't some of you think for yourselves? I didn't even hestitate, I asked the sales rep if I could pop my SIM into their display model and she said ok. It downloaded data immediately on my account. And I have unlimited data plan and the SIM normally sits in my Tilt 2.
It works. I had the common sense to just do it then and there.
Sure, it doesn't make calls. That's a ROM issue. But then that's also heavily documented here on this forum and the info to defeat that is there, too.
Sheesh.

My New Nightmare Tablet

Picked up my Tablet yesterday from T-Mobile. Connected to the web etc using Wi-Fi because I had lots of software to download. Could NOT get any data with my sim card.
I am grandfathered into a data package with T-Mobile which gives me Unlimited Data for $19.99 plus a voice package. Support told me that for this tablet to work I had to upgrade to their Web Connect package for $39.95 and I would NOT have voice. [because they INSIST voice is IMPOSSIBLE with the Galaxy Tab.] [whatever]
I didn't want to agree to their upgrade because my sim works PERFECT in my Dell Streak 5 .. I believe that there is something wrong with the Gal-Tab. I kept telling them that the internet net was the same in their web connect package, it was just more expensive. They told me I was wrong. So I said .. OK make the change. They did and 12 hours later I still cannot connect.
I contacted them this morning and got them to give me my OLD $19.99 internet package and voice back ..
SO .. Any ideas ?? I even tried changing the APN on the Samsung to the same as on my streak. My streak is epc.mobile.com .. the Samsung had it as epc.tmobile.com
I had an issue with my data when I first got my tab too - the support personnel signed me up for an incorrect data package and all I got was a redirect to a Tmobile page when trying to use the browser (and no data on any other apps).
After talking to Support they changed my data package and voila, it worked.
So what's going on - unfortunately T-Mobile US filters Galaxy Tab's by IMEI. As such, they completely block it from working on any plan other than the data plan built for it. Despite the fact that the tab is technically capable of being a phone, T-Mobile will not allow it on their network.
So your telling me when I get my galaxy tab if I pop in my wifes T Mobile sim it wont work. That is truly annoying.
Instead of getting a new data package I am going to just pay the 10 a month to add mobile hot spot to her phone which will work great (maybe even faster because she has 4G on her phone)
THANKS .. I hate T-Mobile but have been with them for 8 years .. I guess I have just learned to put up with their NONSENSE !!
Since Dell Streak 5 came from AT&T Tmo does not have records and treats it as a smartphone. The same will be true for the Galaxy Tab purchased from AT&T. You will be able to get data and even voice using other Tmo Sim after reflashing proper firmware.
But since these two carriers use different frequencies for 3G you would get only EDGE.
It is hard for us to understand rational for such decisions. It seems that they are loosing Tab sales. Why do European carriers find it profitable while US not?
there is a way to get both voice+data on the tab using a standard t-mobile sim with data+voice. 1-you need to flash an European ROM to get voice and 2-then there is the issue of the IMEI which blocks the tab from accessing the web with a sim that already has data.
the second part cant really be posted as i was already removed by the mods due to rules violations, but it can be done i am using my Vibrants SIM on the tab.
Sounds like someone failed to do their homework. T-mo Tab is suppose to be data-only device and utilizes different APN's with custom modem firmware then smartphones, hence why your SIM would not work. You need to root the Tab, flash Euro firmware, then flash a custom modem. Instructions can be found in the development forum. Also, keep in mind that flashed T-Mo Tab can only get EDGE, no 3G.

That's not correct! You can get 3g data with your T-Mobile sim card with the correct modem. Just use roto-modem switcher

I think all our posts can confuse anyone.
The question was about using Tmobile smartphone Sim with the Tmobile Tab.
Let me say this: there is no way to get legitimely both voice and data on Tmo network using Tmo Sim. You can get voice without cellular data, or 3G data with different modem and separately paid broadband service Sim not the smartphone Sim.
I put my Sim card from my MyTouch 4G on the Tablet and phone works n/p but you need to flash a Euro rom! Thats it bottom line! Flash The rom and you will have phone access

question about tmobile plans.

ok so i took the sim card from my dumb phone out and put it into my tab.
added unlimited web and text to my plan
now i loaded the roto 2g 3g switcher. however mobile data does not work.
my browser redirects to a tmobile login.
deleted efs folder
no redirects to a pay as yougo page
anyideas how do u get data working?

I have the same problem....after reading the forum topic on how AT&T is blocking data usage from SGT's.....I think that T-Mobile is doing the same thing. I have two sims...one from/for each carrier and T-Mobile roams on AT&T's network and I have to tether to my EVO.....defeats the purpose of carrying only one device!
so theres no way to use data on a tmobile galaxy tab with a tmobile sim with the no contract 500 minute voice / unlimited web / messaging plan?

AT&T data only

Hi,
I am trying to get an AT&T data plan only for my Note. SO I was trying to get the data plan for a tablet and AT&T gave me a SIM card but they wouldn't activate it. They said I need to put it in my tablet to activate it. Does anyone know if I can just call AT&T and ask them to activate it for me over the phone???
Any other way to get data only plan on the Note?
I made a thread about this last week and never got a answer. I plan to be doing the same once I get mine. I have my Micro SIM from my iPAD(unlimited Data)
I know with the iPhone the only APN I had to change was the wap.cingular. I typed "Broadband" instead, and my iPhone works with the Data only SIM.
I used that same sim with a converter in my ATT Galaxy Tab with no modification.
See if you can find the normal ATT APN then do what I did, subtract the "wap.cingular" for "broadband"
If you are waiyting and just want to activate it...maybe try and fone some one with a 3g ipad that will let you activate your plan? Once you do, they can pop their sim back in and it wil be as if you never did anything.
