[Q] Cannot upgrade to Froyo

Hello. I have recently bought a T-Mobile unlocked Galaxy S (Vibrant) from ebay and I am trying to upgrade it to 2.2 (it is 2.1 now) using Kies Mini but I get the message "Error upgrading phone." After looking on the internet, I found that you cannot upgrade the phone if you use it in another country (I bought the phone from a UK company through ebay and I live in Cyprus). I also saw that there is a registry hack to trick Kies mini to think that you are in a different country, but I don't know what values to put there. Can anyone help?

Just try to root it and use a custom 2.2 rom. You will be much more satisfied.

I bought my Vibrant when i was in USA. Now i'm in France,i have a french sim and i'm using Kies Mini to update it.It worked even with KB1.

I bought unlocked T-Mobile USA Vibrant, live in Russia and upgrade it here, first time to J16, later to KA6 FROYO without any problem via Kies mini.

That should work for you since the author is in NZ and was able to get the kies upgrade. There's another article here on XDA for those that want to trick kies into download mode even though they are not running official roms:

Be forewarned. Kies mini may still give you problems, it's a little buggy. Halfway through the upgrade process I got "Error upgrading phone" and this on my phone:

Pulled battery, same thing. Pulled battery again, put it back in, held both volume I was able to get into recovery mode and the upgrade resumed. That was fun..NOT!!!

phrack, another method to get rid of that screen if your phone is already connected to your pc and your running heimdall is C:\<path-to-heimdall>\heimdall close-pc-screen
not only do i have adb set up in PATH, I have heimdall in PATH as well. I use it quite frequently with the zImages.

That's good to know..if you're running heimdall...
But I was running kies (just like the OP) so that wouldn't have helped me. I just found out about heimdall but since more people here use odin I would probably use that when I decide to flash since it would be easier to get help.

It will automatically update. Just now I open Kies and its updated automatically. But they have removed Samsung store tab from the new update. Really Bad.

For me this is the first time it actually works, previously it said it was anavailable

You couldn't use Samsung Apps from pc anyway, because of Google's policy, so it was useless.

i jus connected mine after the latest kies update.. its working fine.
try installing the phone drivers again manually
Kies toolbar -> TOOLS -> Install driver

Or just install the drivers without your phone plugged in...

Just try everything and keep getting "impossible to iniate service at the phone"

I think it's global release. I installed it just now, reinstalled the drivers after updating without connecting the phone and everything worked smooth. Synced my phone from the first try without even rebooting the pc.

Kies is a crap
I also think that it is global. Anyway I'm really starting to think, that Kies in just a piece of crap.
1)Update to new version offered, but after starting the installation for 4th time, I've decided to download it manually.
2)Have the same trouble as some guys here, cannot connect to the phone (solved by restart, but WTF? This is 2011 and I don't like restarts anymore)
3)When the phone is connected and lock-screen on, Kies won't connect
4)When connected, I cannot use the phone (with HTC you can)
5) Still no BT sync available, why?
I have SGS II for few weeks and the phone really rocks, but dev team of Kies should get some slap in the face to wake up....
What do you think guys?

I am also having the same problem.Not connecting at all.
Tried with Galaxy 3 and it is connecting.

yeah agreed mate, although i remember when the SGSII first came out it was similar to this but after a week or two it was must easier to root the phone.

Hello, first of all, i would like to say thank you so much for your noob proof guide on rooting SGS3. I successfully rooted my SGS3 by following your method (and i am a noob haha).
But, i have a problem now, my phone keep reminding me to update my firmware, and i couldn't do it. From what i read, its because my phone is rooted.
So, now i want to un-root my phone, but i am so confuse because so much info out there. I try to read it over and over but i still not understand (i am a noob).
So, i need your help to guide me to unroot my phone. I am not using the CF-Root, i am using the first method you posted on this thread.

Please xda brethren, I need some help. My niece purchased a sgs4, which was rooted for like $150. She was in need of a phone. Anyway, the damn thing has been permanently frozen after a week of use. So i figured maybe flashing it back to stock rom. I found the links to download the stock rom, but its taking forever to get it down. I've been at this since 9:30 THIS MORNING and it hasn't downloaded fully yet. the download keeps stopping. I have to be back at work in 6 1/2 hours and i haven't even slept yet. Can someone please out of the kindness of your heart provide me with the latest stock rom for the sgs4. I'm dying over here for sleep. :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Uhhhh.....Hyelton, I need the firmware file for me to utilize kies. Otherwise, i wouldn't be looking for the stock rom of ICS for SGS4. This phone is rooted already. I need to UNDO the root.

You cannot flash files with kies. You only flash latest. Which you use emergency recovery and enter your imei

No need to look for an old file like this. He's the latest stock to run through Odin, it should get get all fixed up and unrooted.

Samsung SM-T330 Root on 4.4.2 please??

My little boy has autism and so cannot handle when things change and look different.
I have an SM-T330 running 4.4.2 (uk) which is rooted and has been great but is starting to hiccup a bit so I wanted a backup plan and so I bought another SM-T330 from ebay.
Problem is that I rooted mine about 9 years ago and cannot remember how I did it, but also the new tablet is on 5.1 android.
I cannot find a CF root available for 4.4.2 please help.
I tried to do kingoroot one touch on it and it has bricked it, so I am currently downloading both the stock 5.1 and 4.4.2 to try fix that using ODIN (but I am so out of my depth)
So if I manage to un-brick the tablet, I will be looking to try use ODIN to root it.
But so far I can only find CF-autoroot files that say they are for 5.1
Does anyone know if these would work on 4.4.2 or would they brick it again?
Or does anyone know where I can get a CF-autoroot file for 4.4.2 please
I am honestly out of my depth so apologies if I am not using all the correct terms, I just hope to get it on 4.4.2 and rooted (Once I have that, everything else I have backed up with titanium backup).
Please help
Really hoping to avoid 5.1 as my boy would not handle the difference.

So I managed to unbrick it to flash it to 4.4.2 great, but now it does not show/recognise in odin? It saw it fine before, why not now? Is it a different set of samsung usb drivers maybe??

I discovered that the button press to get the tablet into download mode was different in 5.1 to 4.4.2 so I was in the wrong adb mode.
Manage to unbrick and flash to 4.4.2 at first.
Now have managed to flash the cf-autoroot for the later 5.1 version using odin and it looks to have worked phew.
As far as I can tell I now have a 4.4.2 version with root which is what I needed.

My Tab 4 is in 4.4.2 version, can you tell me what button combination did you use, because power button+volume up comes up with a screen (pic included) but Odin doesn't want to work with it.

I honestly cant remember but if you have tried power+vol-up then it may well be power+vol-down or something similar.
I remember that both ways gave different options for odin to try recognise I just cant remember what the combination was and now realise I shouldve written it down at the time sorry.
If you try some combinations and get the right one please do post again here

I think you need the home+power+vol(up or down) so try both

OK I will try, I am not sure if the twrp version I am using is correct or not, I'm trying to use the same as I used in Android 5.1 but it should be fine I guess.
EDIT: It was fine of course, the combination was POWER+HOME+VOLUME DOWN to download page then POWER+HOME+VOLUME UP for Twrp page
