I would like to know if it is possible to sell this phone, in a working condition to someone else. Or is this phone forever tied to me? I currently have this phone and one on another carrier which is much cheaper and cannot afford the hero ATM

Did you sign a contract? If so, you should talk to Sprint about that. We aren't contract lawyers.
Well i didnt actually SIGN anything.. haha but yes I am under contract, I have left carriers before while under contract, with no problems though.
But my question remains the same, if the phone IS tied to me, because of contract or other reasons, is there a way to revert it to a new-like state in which someone could purchase and use the phone? This IS a hacking website after all.

Have you rooted it? If so, you should probably RUU unless they actually WANT the rooted phone. Other than that, you should simply need to format the SD card and do a factory wipe of the phone data. That would return the phone to a factory state.

Well, if you have this phone flashed to another carrier, you'll need to get it all setup back to Sprint before someone else can take it over. But chances are as long as you didn't clone the ESN or something illegal. You can sell it off just fine.
Best bet is to call Sprint and have them check the ESN before you sell it. They can look it up and make sure it can be activated. If there is an unpaid bill on the ESN or if it was ever reported stolen, they will not activate it.
The phone is NOT tied to you once you've been released from your account obligation. People sell their CDMA phones all the time. This isn't a problem
okay, But if i sold it and DIDNT tell sprint, and just stopped paying the bill could it still be activated? BTW it is not flashed to use another carrier. But It would nice if i could unlock it to open up the possibilty of an international sale.

It can't be sold internationally because USA is the only country with CDMA.
Nope a phone has to have a clean ESN to be put on another account. A bad ESN means phone came from an account which still has a balance or was stolen.
You don't even really have to tell sprint, if you activate another phone on the account and remove the Hero... But something has to be active on the account in its place - They pretty much hold the phone hostage until you have paid them.

You can stop paying and sell the phone. Its not a problem. Unless someone reports the phone stolen then it will get a bad ESN number. If you just simply sell it or give it to someone else, it will work perfectly fine.

Ummm no. Have you ever registered a phone that came from an account that still had a balance on it? It won't work
Arrgggh so im getting conflicting answers here. Thats okay though. It makes alot of sense that you wouldnt be able to sell your phone until your balance is paid/ different phone switched to same account.
So ill ask this; is there a way to clean/reset your ESN? That would be ideal.
I've also heard the idea of selling the phone for "parts", but that sounds less appealing because im sure nobody is in the market for a "parts" Hero. Unless someone has knowledge of the contrary.
try selling the phone and transferring the account to someone else at the same time, just go with them to a sprint store. I THINK that can be done.
As for changing the ESN you won't find help for that here as it's illegal.
I have not ever done this before, but I found this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/UNLOCK-Code-AT-...Accessories&hash=item1c138c9851#ht_4764wt_913
I was wondering if any of these are legit or do they all fall into the realm of too good to be true. I have called at&t and they stated that I could not have an unlock code so that is why I am going down this route, if it turns out to be legit.
Anyway I welcome your feedback about what may be just a dumbass question, LOL.
p.s. the only reason I am looking at this guy's page is that he has +50000 reviews with 99.8% quality.
my one experience with an ebay unlock code was it bricked the phone I was using. After doing further research I found that this was a constant for that phone. I have not seen any posts about unlocking an Aria yet but I also have not been looking for them since I am on AT&T so there is no need to unlock the phone for a different carrier currently.
that's the same guy i used to unlock 3 at&t phone. i never had a problem
If you are going out of the country then call att and tell them that. they will give you your unlock code for free all youll have to do is get a different (Non att) sim.

They changed that policy. Now you have to wait for your contract to run out before they will unlock your phone, even if you tell them you're traveling. I tried calling them and having them unlock it, and that's what they told me. I was really disappointed too, because they've unlocked my phone before and never gave me any trouble because of the contract.
Maybe if I had threatened to unlock it anyhow, I might have had better luck– but I doubt it.
Ya I tried calling them too. Told them my situation and it was denied. I guess I will try this guy. At the most I am out 10 bucks.

Strange, I just re-upped my contract when buying my Aria, and unlocked my phone with the code from ATT tech support for free. I do go internation a few times/year, so that may be a flag that I am not entirely lying, but it was no problem. Also, I used chat, instead of phone...they gave the my code in 10 seconds.
So I took the plunge. Fast service from this guy. Bought yesterday and got today. Went by t-mobile store and borrowed a sim. Put in unlock code and let me in the system. Rebooted to verify with t-mobile sim. Did not ask for code the second time.
Altogether happy. Me -$13.00. Phone unlocked.
Buyer beware. Cannot guarantee same results.

just curious so please forgive me but how did that go, you walked into store..umm, can I borrow a sim ? they just hand them out to try out ?
I spoke with ATT tech (actually chat and then called to verify..) and they said they will give unlock code in 90 days from day of activation, no problem on their part, no cost.
i'm curious about all this too and still with a locked HTC Aria.
I went to the ebay link and read everything.
At some point it says:
"...be advised I cannot do refunds if phone asking for a PIN (personal code) which is password set on the phone (?)"

Well if this is my phone and I have the personal password, then I might have it.
When inserting a SIM card the phone says:
"SIM network unlock PIN", SOOOOO, I don't get it... will write the guy an email about it and hear what he says about it...
Eager to unlock this phone!
So..
1. I have heard various things from people regarding what AT&T will do for them. I would call them first and if they will unlock it for you then great. I spoke to them and they would not give it to me and told me that they had an exclusive right to the phone for the foreseeable future.
2. I did just walk into the t-mobile store and ask for a sim. The girl looked at me puzzled and said they are 20 bucks. I told here I need it for five seconds to unlock my phone. She said that Phones don't do that. I said that I have the code. She gave me a used sim.
In conclusion I think that I did go searching for a credible way to do this. I don't want a million people telling me what at&t's policy is since I did call them though. At any rate I did unlock my phone so I am good.

May I ask you and if you remember what was the message the phone displayed before you unlock it with the t-moblie SIM card?
It was the message "SIM network unlock PIN" or what did it say?
I believe what you did, I've done certain type of things in past, walking into a store and asking for those sort of things... lol... great that it worked!
Ya it was something like "SIM NETWORK UNLOCK" not a personal unlock and I had to put in the 8 digit unlock code I bought off ebay. The previous post of mine was just about all the people stating all the AT&T policies that they have heard of and asking why I didn't just call them when I stated in my first post that I did. Also ya social engineering worked great there as they gave me some old sim to use they they found in a desk that didn't work but had a different network ID on it so it would prompt me for the SIM UNLOCK code.
seems then that I 'm having the same message, will try buying a code from the ebay guy then.
thanks a lot for your response.
PS. Calling AT&T wont work for me either as I bought the phone through ebay and I have not and will never have AT&T phone # or something to just simply call them and say 'hey I bought one of your phones over ebay, would you please give me the unlock code?' lol...
just bought a code from the ebay seller... will see how it develops and if the code works.
I will post results and everything related once I have the code
universal Sim
I have tried a few online sellers and they say a code is not available for my aria. Bummer, hopefully that will change. I remembered I had one of those universal sim chips like a Rebel Sim. I sort of works. Sometimes when I turn the phone on I can manually choose the network and get service, but most of the time it won't connect. Maybe I can buy a newer version of the universal sim.
Well dude, I got to say that the ebay deal really worked for me!!! Couldn't be more happy!
Was a little skeptical about it but just got the code on the email minutes ago and worked right away!!!
Cost me 9.95 because the price was reduced and paid with PayPal. Bought it in the morning and got the code minutes ago.
There's another ebay seller with the same price/offer which seems to work too (good feedback too)

What phone did you tried to unlock?
---------------
Thanks to breakeven and xda-developers forum!!!
I decided to test this out today for fun.
I tried 3 different ebay unlockers (all were rated as top-sellers) and all 3 were unable to unlock my off-contract Aria (from Amazon). They did, however, offer to try on another server, at around 2-3x the original cost, which I refused and was refunded my money.
I really don't care if my Aria can be unlocked since I have no intention of leaving AT&T anyway, but I thought I'd share MY experience with the rest of you. YOUR experience may vary.
On a side note, I unlocked 2 different models of Blackberry (again, just for fun) a few days ago using one of those ebay sellers with no problem. So I wouldn't worry too much about getting ripped off (as long as they are top rated sellers).
tongas
hey tongas would you mind telling us which ebay seller unlocked you Aria?
Thanks
so my friend got a vibrant, and he wanted to file a claim for a lost phone to get one for his brother. as far as I know this is illegal. can you guys give me some examples of things that might happen to him if he goes through with it or some possible consequences? Insurnce fraud. He would go to jail most likely.
TMobile can track the missing phone using gps and cell towers. They'll see where the phone is and get it for him instead of giving him a new one.

Well your friend is slightly dumb. First of all, the lost phone is blocked for life. Meaning if anyone ever tries to put a sim card in it, and use it, on any network, it won't work. It is permanently blocked from registering onto any network. So basically your friend is going to get 1 refurbished phone in the mail, and his new vibrant will be blacklisted for ever.
Next, if they find out about the fraud, well he can face fraud charges. If he is underage on a family plan, his parents will face fraud charges.
Good luck.
thanks guys!
Its cheaper to buy one from wal-mart than to file a claim (Wal-mart new two year contract is $98.99, asurion charges $130, not to mention you run the risk (more likely than not) you'd get caught.)

Insurance don't deal with the phone company. You can claim online without ever speaking to anyone .
Also they do blacklist the sim but a new sim will work, this isn't cdma where ya need to call the phone company to activate a new bought phone, just put in your sim...

T-Mobile can and most likely will block the IMEI number from being able to register on the network. They've done it multiple times for my sister when she has had the phone stolen or lost. They can insert another SIM card all they want and it won't work. It might work on AT&T, I don't know if the companies share blacklisted IMEI numbers.
Most likely, they would not go through the process of prosecuting a fraud case on something like this because the cost of the lawyers and other legal fees outweigh the cost of just paying the claim but you never know.

holly cow, you have a wife? with the comments you leave on here, I thought you were a 12 yr old.
they don't blacklist the IMEI because whoever finds it still has to have a service provider... its the same way with the iphone... Phone company is gonna get paid, regardless of whoever has the phone. I do think however that they lock the number associated with the simcard to prevent "fraudulent activities" i think its like 30 days i remember reading that at the tmobile website
google tmobile insurance replacement FAQs it lays it all out.
good luck, best to do it with a prepaid card so you don't lock a good number...
not that i would ever condone such behavior

I've been in the cell industry for the last 6 years and can tell you for a fact, with GSM phones they do not blacklist or lock IMEI's. Its not even possible. The only thing they might do is see if you are stupid enough to use the lost phone on your own plan.

I need to unlock my HD2. I need to get the 25 digit activation code. Does anyone on here know how to do this or could point me in the cheapest direction for the newest database? i know mine needs a code from the most up to date database.
thanks.
:]
There is a lot of threads on this exact subject, please use search next time.
Now as for your question yes you can simple unlock your HD2 as well as most other smartphones that require a simple card to work. I see your carrier is listed as T-Mobile so all you have to do is contact T-Mobile And tell them you need a unlock code cor your HD2. Tell them you are going to have to go out of country for business or a vacation and you want to be able to use a local carrier's services while there. Or if you want just tekl them you are going to terminate your contract with them and switch to another carrier, but still want to use your HD2 and not have to buy another phone. I recommend the first suggestion myself but hey sometimes honesty is the best policy. Your other option is to go to Ebay and buy a code. they are not expensive at all. It is up to you how you want to go about getting your code. Be advised though using your HD2 with another carrier. You will only get Edge signal for your data signal. This is because of the hardware in the HD2 not the software. If you are switching to AT&T the Australian HD2 can use AT&T's 3G Signal but no other HD2.
contacting t-mobile isn't an option. ill just save up money and buy one on ebay. i knew i was gonna have to do that but i was just seeing if anyone on XDA could unlock phones.

I just got the phone off Craigslist, I didn't waste time spend little $, went to three sites, try and get codes, no luck, waste times, n hope I ll get my $ back. After 2 weeks, I finally got unlcok code from the seller, who's carrier is tmobile, since I asked him I can't get the unlock code from different sites, so he finally forwarded tmobile email w unlock code to me. You can get a friend who uses tmobile to do it for you? You get one unlock code every 90 days. I've unlocked two phones already including my HD2 and they don't care whose phone it belongs to.
All they ask for is the IMEI, the phone model, and an email address to contact you to send you the code. At first I got a confirmation email a day after calling, then the three days later they sent me the code.

Just make sure your bill is paid, they won't give you the unlock code if your bill is outstanding.
TMobile has some awesome service, I'm going to miss them.
yea, i have an outstanding bill. i tried calling them and just saying i bought the phone off of someone. they said they needed the original owner to call them. guess ill just get 1 off ebay.

Your best bet is to get it from the orignal carrier. Other then that you can pay a few places to get the code and sometimes they will have it. But remember that it is illegal now without the carriers permission.

I think what he was trying to do is teach you how to fish for yourself...... instead of just giving you a fish. This way you can find your own answers and do some reading and learn while doing so. Most of the devs on XDA get frustrated because people do not try to get their own answers and just want someone to figure it out for them instead. These usually are the people who brick their phones and don't know how to fix them. Then they post here about how urgent it is and need someone to help them un brick their phones. I have seen this so many times here......
I was contemplating purchasing a phone from a seller on craigslist. I am an AT&T customer and my account is in good standing. I called from my ATT phone and connected with a customer service representative. After about 2 minutes of establishing rapport and explaining that this phone would be for my wife for mother's day and I wanted to be certain it wasn't reported stolen. I also explained that we will be traveling in the next month to go to Cambodia. She said no problem, and I received a text with the unlock code. Total time on the phone was under 3 minutes.
if you pay full price for the phone from a carrier (meaning the off contract price), they are legally obligated to provide you the unlock code. if you didn't you have to use a website's services
thanks!

i had the s3 for att unlocked yesterday i sold my s3 to get the s4,call and say you want the network sim unlock code they will ask for imei and then youll wait while they search to make sure its not stolen or blacklisted and if its fine they give you code and instructions how to do it ,but idk if they will for the s4 just yet,had it unlocked for tmo
Why not unlock the phone for free with the hidden menu option?

ATT sucks
I fought with them for hours to get an unlock code and they told me i had to cancel my contract and pay the fee to get the code. I canceled my contract and fought with them until they credited my fee and they said in 24hrs you can have an unlock code fromt he protal on ATT.com. I waited and tried and tried and tried and it didnt work they said it couldnt be unlocked at this time.. So i called them back and after about 45minutes on the phone with another rep he said that they told me bad information and you need to fully complete your contract to be able to get an unlock code then offered to start me back up and give me a free month. Thats not what i wanted because im goign to tmobile for a pay as you go plan but in the end, ATT screwed me and then kept going on about how it wasnt their fault but it was and they werent going to do anyhting about giving me an unlock code. Now im using Unlock-Code-World.com and they are taking forever to give me a code and probably wont even work anyway because they replied for me information saying they could crack it with what i had given them. Unfortunately the free way also doesnt work anymore because they locked it down in 4.3 or even the mf3 in 4.2.2 but who knows, it doesnt work.
