Hi
Does anybody know where the skins are for the signal strength button the connection state button and the volume button are.
As you can see in the image below im trying to set a green theme with the txt on my exec and these icons don't go as they are white.
Many thanks
Scott
There built into some of the ROM dlls I think. Most people skin the bar with WisBar or similar.
V
I Suspected as much that these were related to dll's
Does anybody know which dll's they are.
I did use to use wisbar but i found that there was just to much lag with it.
I would like to know this to as i also think that wisbar lags up the device to mutch
Anybody got any ideas.
I think if we can crack this 1 it may also helps us understand how to remove the dam battery icon in the new imate rom and let us put the clock back.
shellres.96.dll
V
Microsoft design guidelines demand that these symbols remain white... Not that this will stop you but I thought you should know.

Is there anything on this board that is within the Microsoft guidelines!?

This looks kick ass! When did you cook this one now???
San, that's a screenshot from VJSmallIcons II, which will turn your "programs" launcher fullscreen and permit changing the view style (look up VJSmallIcons to see what the original did). The new version, although looking simple, requires a lot of voodoo in the background, but it's a test platform for stuff I'm developing for VJToggleToday II.
VJSmallIcons II should be out quite soon, just one or two more tweaks to retain settings in the registry and it'll be out for test releases.
scotjen1: to come back On topic, I've never tried overriding that dll, but I presume you could try the same technique used by Azhad here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=34995&highlight=
to create a new resource dll to override the original icons etc. It'd be a nice hack to try.

Great work with VJsmallicons II looking good.
Now back to the skinning. I have managed to copy the shellres.96.dll (great work for that V would have never known that) to my desktop and have used resource hacker to extract the ico files from it.
I then found a program called easy icon maker (good program works well) and have managed to change the colour of these icons.
When i then replace the resource with resource hacker it show as if it has been replaced i then load the DLL back in to the windows dir and get an error saying this file is in use and can't be overwritten but i use resco and it gave me an option to continue which i presume forces it to be over written. I then soft reset and bang the icons are exactly the same. Any idea's ?
Also just 1 other thing when changing the icons they were set to 16 x 16 and 2 colours so i had to change this to 16 x 16 and 16 colours would this have made a difference also.
scotjen1: it's likely to be more involved then that (as if that wasn't enough!).
You will have to have a read through Azhad's thread above, and the VGA files thread. What you need to do on WM5 is, I believe, although I have no direct experience in this area, is to create a resource only dll containing the icons you want to replace. 16 colours should make no difference. But I believe the resource ids need to match the original.
That needs to be signed (check the first few VGA files posts for info of how this was done originally, and find the signer, called SignIt, posted by BeyondTheTech I believe), and then save the file as an .mui file so that it gets loaded over the top of the original shell file. That shell file is unlikely to be replaceable whatever Resco thinks.
Have a read through Azhad's thread, decompile his .mui files and that should point you in the right direction.
V
V
Wow that does sound quite a challenge still though im not going to let it beat me lol.
I have got Azhad's files at home (i presume you are talking about the power backlight and wifi files) i will have a go at trying to decompile them tonight see if it can shed some light on the situaion.
As for the signing wasn't there a cab flying around somewhere that disabled this or am i completly going off track here.
You still need to sign the dlls for WM5.
SignCode:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=191136#191136
I really can't say if any of this is correct, as I said, it's something I've thought about but never bothered with. I'm working on my own skinner for the bar, but this method should be effective + no overhead.
You don't need to decompile Azhad's stuff, just resource hack it to see what he's put in the dlls. In fact, use his dlls, empty it out, stuff it with your stuff and re-sign.
V
Nice that sounds a little bit easier lol.
Will give it a try when the work day ends will keep you posted on the progress.
I did about 3 hard reset to the phone (for testing purposes), and all the sudden the myfavs program does not appear after I did the hard reset the 4th time, I did the hard reset about 2 more times and it did not restore the myfavs program (it suppose to back to its factory settings)
Now I keep getting "your myfaves contacts have been restored" text message every time time I turn on the phone (keeps pilling up with this same text message)which your suppose to only get once.
under the memory setting; storage & program seems to have the exactly same file size as when i had myfavs before.
What can I do? all I want is the default factory settings.. help me.
Hah! You survived longer than I did with it. I hard reset once just to clean my phone up before I started messing with anything (messing with the ROM, etc.) and the MyFaves app disappeared completely from the little tray bar at the bottom and the Today Screen.
Interestingly if you dig around with the file browser in the \windows\ directory I can see all the MyFav5 related applications, but nothing launches.
I'm tempted to try the RUU but to be honest the MyFaves program just ate a ton of memory and resulted in me calling people on accident when I had the Today Screen Plug-in active. So as long as the plan still gets accounted correctly (read as: I don't get charged for calling my 5 people),I don't really care.
I thought I'd let you know you aren't the only one out there with the exact same problem. I would like a solution but it isn't mission critical for me.
I found a solution to your problem. I'll do some more testing later. For now:
Could you look in your \Windows\ directory of your phone and tell me what "My*" applications and files are listed there? (You might have to make the basic file explorer show all files by using Menu>Show All Files).
All the "My" files that are in windows directory (revised & no file missing or mistyped). The some files are repeated to I placed the filesize next to them.

My5Service.exe is the key application. I wanted to make sure you had all the bits to the MyFaves program. The reason you see duplicate names with different file sizes is that the File Explorer program that you have on your hand held suppresses extensions of files for whatever idea.
Now then to fix your problem you are going to need to edit the registry of your device (I used total commander, the .CAB is in one of the Useful cab threads).
A key is missing from the registry after hard reset. WOO!!
Go to \\registry\\HKLM\init\ (using total commander's akward directory structure style)
You then have to add a new key, I used "Launch94" as I was noticing most of the T-Mo crapware was using the Launch9# series of keys
Then edit the key's data to be: My5Service.exe (Must be spelled correctly)
Basically what you did was add in a registry key that tells windows to load up the MyFaves service at boot so all the my faves apps will initialize properly. Putting My5Service.exe into the \windows\startup\ folder doesn't work (I tried it initially).
Soft reset and the phone will act wonky for a second as it is refreshing itself, don't panic. A box popped up saying "MyFaves display set to ON" and all was well at that point.
Then, since you want factory default I'd just remove Total Commander using the add/remove programs feature.
Good lookin out!!!
thanks alot, it did it and it worked.
I made an attemp to reformat the phone again, and myfavs appeared. Funny How I never managed to get that total commander for this phone. Lol im an experience user with registries (now gonna experiment with the register editor an tweak the phone to make phone faster and remove useless I don't need)
Thanks lot you have been helpful and gave fast support!!
Ah well no insult to your ability or experience was meant. I try to be as specific in my write ups as possible so others who might have the same problem can understand the solution, regardless of ability. Tends to make my life at work a lot easier when I do that so it's become a bit of a habit.
Glad it worked for ya and I'm actually surprised it survived another format. But hey all it says is there is some glitchy code in the re-install portion T-Mo has built.

By the way, let me know what tweaks you try. I'd be interested in them myself.
Good seeing people help each other out. The speed tweaks are everywhere, but to remove things you have to recook and flash your phone. (Alternatively, you can flash one of the many available ROMs our cooks have already made or made a custom one based on my own through the link on my signature.)
i got a quick Question how about trying to add it to a already cooked rom is that possible ? bc i love the PDAVIET-ROM BUILD 20931.1.5.0.PV(uploaded) rom but the myfaves tab dont work
does anyone have the my faves.cab?
I don't know when or how but I've ended up with some crappy barely readable fonts in my Google Map and Facebook application on my Sprint TP2.
They look very much like the type of font you see on a LED seven segment display with the space between each segment.
Can anyone tell my how to change the fonts on these two applications. I'm thinking it must be a registry entry.
Thanks.

Yep, this happened to me after installing some apps.
Just find a font you like, and replace the ones in the fonts dir in windows. I used comic sans and renamed it to what was in the fonts folder and over wrote them. This will fix your problem.

I had the same problem after installing MS Reader. The problem is Google (and I'm guessing Facebook) use the first font listed alphabetically in your Windows dir. Least it sounds like you can see the words, I ended up with a whole bunch of characters that looked like +x0 overlapping like a LCD diplay with each segment lit.
You could try finding all the fonts on your system, working out which one comes first alphabetically, then making a copy of a font you like and renaming it to be alphabetically first. Unfortunately, even if you systematically uninstall everything, I think the font will remain so the copy/rename method is your only option. Or you could hard reset (*warning, you will loose everything!*) then inspect each CAB file you install, removing any additional fonts they contain. If you're not sure how to do that last sentence, or don't have the software to disect CAB files, it's probably best you don't go down that route!
Culprit seems to be TouchWatch2. Guess I'll either delete it or get good at switching fonts.
Thanks for the help.
Hello,
Earlier today, I copied a file named AVATOR.PNG into the \Windows folder of my HTC Touch HD (running Grzegorz10s custom Dusk ROM). The file was meant to replace an existing Avator.png file. (The graphics file is part of a skinned Manila 2.5 installation, but that's beside the point.) I ended up with two separate files in \Windows; one named AVATOR.PNG and the other named Avator.png.
At this point, I can't remove either file, nor can I change their file properties. A few days ago (before doing a task 29 and reflashing the ROM to improve device performance), I could replace the packaged file without problem. The procedure at that time was simply to stop HTC Sense from the list of Home Screen items, remove the read only attribute of Avator.png, and overwrite it with another graphic with the same name.
This time, I apparently didn't pay enough attention to upper and lower case characters.... To view the symptoms and issue, please refer to this YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMQkgENs0DA
Can anybody help me out? I could always reflash the ROM but it seems like too much work for something this "simple."
Thanks,
Svein
ok, you already wrote, you will care for case sentitivity next time, so no lecturing there
these might sound stupid, but have you tried, either renaming AVATOR.png (the one you copied there, if i'm not mistaking) to Avator.png (should either ask to overwrite or at least give another error) or something completely unrelated (to get rid of the conflict)?
can you maybe move that file to, say, my documents\ and delete it there?
the only other things, that would come to mind would be to write a script to delete that one file and run it in startup, before anything else starts, or in a UC environment, where also nearly everything else is stopped, but to be honest, you should rather perform a hard reset, much faster.

Thanks, Tony. Yeah, the case sensitivity is a given - my bad. And I will likely opt for a hard reset. I had *really* looked forward to not having to reconfigure my device again, now that I finally found a ROM that I thoroughly enjoy, but alas... The files are locked (can't move, delete, or change attributes no matter what...)
Googled "UC environment" with both HTC and windows mobile as keywords and came up with Unified Communication. Is that the right way to go or did I just blow my cover and will get tossed outta here as the functional, non-techie user that I just professed to be?
by UC, i was referring to the automatic customizations (formerly known as EXTROM), run after a hard reset or through an automatic installer integrated in many roms, i saw it as XDA_UC or Cloudy AutoInstall. Because the purpose of these automatic customizations are to install settings (mms, internet) or skins and wallpapers, usually done by your carrier, when running this setup, all connections are cut, all apps are shut down and only a basic windows mobile is running (also sense is shut down).
these autoinstallers can use cab or xml or mortscript files, but setting up a mortscript to try and delete a file, when you've never done it before, probably takes longer than hard resetting and setting up your device again. yet, you can make use of autoinstallers to get all your programs up and running, sync with myphone, and all that is left to do is make some basic settings like owner information. usually that should take less than an hour, that way, being much faster than searching solutions for several days

Hi all!
My post should be in the developer page, but since I have less than 10 posts I'll post it here. Hope someone'll read it, I think it may be useful to everybody. BTW sorry for my poor english.
I am a user of Windows 8 from the developer preview, and I learned to appreciate the new Start Page and get used to.
The only thing that makes it still "just bearable" to me is the poor (more like nonexistent) non-metro applications customization. I understand that Windows wants developers to create Metro Apps, but their usability on a desktop PC does not fully not convince me; for some uses I prefer a thousand times to use the classic applications.
The question is: how to get the tiles to the classic desktop applications more pleasing than a monochromatic square with an icon?
I started to look far and wide on the Internet, finding not that much (really this does not affect anyone?), but I found something, something (even right in this site).
I've thought about three different ways of solving this problem. Since it's a little bit tl;dr i'll organize them under quotes.
1- An app that opens programs
- it is relatively easy to modify images of Metro Tiles for metro applications already installed, just follow this guide.
- For those who have knowledge of programming C + +, Javascript, or, generically, any language to Visual Basic, creating a tile for your application is extremely easy, so easy even I did it (I don't know programming, sadly). Still, nobody yet has thought to create standard desktop applications with these tiles, even Microsoft itself (Visual Studio RC hasn't got it!).
- I know that Metro Apps work a bit like the sandbox, but you can set the permissions to access images, documents and so on, so should not be impossible to make up a "double bounce" (metro app that opens a link in the Documents which opens the user desktop) without slowing down too the opening of the original program. I do not think is too complex, yet I can not do it alone.
- Also, an xda user found a way to bypass the sandbox and HERE someone (looks like the only one on the ENTIRE internet, apart from me) wondered about this problem and tried to solve this by itself.

2- The icon, centered and bigger
- a simple and elegant solution: can't we just edit the registry to bring up the icon in the middle of the tiles and change as well as the size of it equal to the tile itself? Then we should just make bigger icons for programs large enough to not be pixelated.
I searched a bit in regedit on:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ ImmersiveShell \ Grid
However, I found "only" how to enlarge or shrink the tile itself or the number of these files. There are a lot of other data but does not have competence to understand the setup.
Seems the easiest way.

3- Copying from Google
As you surely know Google has launched the Google Chrome metro interface, with some special features:
- The program does not come from the Windows App Store, but can be downloaded from the Chromium Project site, therefore, is installed in the usual place of Chrome (User / AppData / Local) and not in the folder WindowsApps. This is quite unusual, because I thought it was the "exclusive" folder for metro applications;
- From my analysis I understood that the application that starts, both in desktop and Metro look, is always the same, "chrome.exe". To confirm this I noticed that, in fact, the folder "Metro" in "Google Chrome" folder contains only the userdata files and not specific ones for the program, which instead are contained by the classic Chrome folder;
- I'm pretty sure that all Google Chrome files are in this folder, since I found inside the "Manifest" and the images for the tiles. Trying to change the PNG and cleaning the cache also changed the tile in the Start bar.
- The first step, too simple for it to be working ( ) was to copy the manifest and the images folder in the folder of another program (obviously changing the directory on the manifest through Notepad), clearing the cache and restarting the PC. It did not work, of course.
- The next step was to open the folder "C: \ Users \ MYUSERPROFILE \ AppData \ Roaming \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Start Menu \ Programs" and try to understand more of nature of the link to Google Chrome...Only to find out that the link to Chrome was not there! ... Does anyone know where it is?

I would think that Microsoft would give a way for Google to bypass the restriction on side-loading (for verified developers like Google or the like) if they requested (Of course, they could also have found a way to install Metro Applications without the developers license/enterprise requirement, etc.)
This is probably how it works since the Metro application is not in the usual Installation folder. It is something to wonder about though.

The problem is that I haven't got enough knowledge (not as much as my dedication to the cause ) to really do something with this...I am kinda searching for some help from XDA Developers
Same problem here
I'm also having the same problems on Windows 8. I'm also finding a way to change the default traditional app icons to the metro look, like what google do. Hmmmm.... Microsoft should add a feature to change default non-metro icons to non-metro tiles.
What's weird is that, as someone made me notice, if you make Google Chrome (the W8 version) the default browser for Metro instead of Internet Explorer, IE loses it's metro icon and become a normal Windows monocoloured tile. It's weird enough for making me think that the "copy Google" way is a bit harder than expected.
On the other hand, I've got a friend of mine searching in Windows 8 resources for a way to enlarge and center icons in Start Scren. Nowadays all the icons are big and detailed enough to fit inside a tile, and if they don't we can always make our own. I think that this is actually the easiest way.
Anyone have any clue that might help the cause? Also, since I still have less than 10 post, might someone link this thread in the Windows 8 hacking-developer forum?

Not sure what might cause it, but I know that it's a behavior that's been there since Developers Preview, after setting Chrome as the default browser it would go away, Even when I set the older chrome versions as default it would do it.
Still nothing...! This is quite frustrating, I'm searching really deeply a way to edit the METRO UI, but nothing yet found. Any help?
The way I think would be easier is to center and make bigger the Icon inside the Metro Tiles. I'm trying to use a Resource Editor in windows, but I haven't found anything yet.
Hi, I'm (obviously) new here.
I actually joined just to try and help figure this very issue out.
1. I actually noticed about an hour ago (when installing Firefox) the change that occurred with the Metro tile for IE, changing to a default tile. Your post made me chuckle, as I had literally just done that very thing. It was as if IE felt unloved.
2. I am a designer. The ability to not change these tiles right now is killing me from the inside! I could easily set some color values or make my own icons in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and then make new metro-esque tiles the way I want for nearly all my apps in no time.
So, with all of that said... I too shall be looking into how we can manage making our own tiles for non-metro apps.
I wonder (and this is a cheap cheap fix) if one were to design an application icon for say, Firefox, and it would be the actual size & dimension of the pre-fixed metro square...would that icon fill the sqaure and at least give the appearance of being a metro app? It may, but I fear it might just down-size the icon entirely leaving us at square one.
All my design programs are on my OS X hard drives. Later I'll plug them back in, then re-boot my hackintosh and try to make a fill-in metro styled icon for testing purposes.
-TYPØ
Hi TYPOGRAPH1C, sadly changing the icon size won't work, nowadays almost every application icon for Windows have a resolution big enough to fit more than just the METRO tile; sadly, it's still not working.
Also, I've tried (withouth success) another experiment: In the "Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" folder you can find the links for some of the METRO APP; those icons are from a DLL! I've tried to simply copy one of those in another folder and make a legacy program use it, but it didn't work. I guess is one way less to try
That is unfortunate. And, who knows this may be something we can't fully tackle until the full release of the OS. But, I do know that I went through yesterday and counted 30+ apps that I personally would like to make icons for. Mainly the general stuff I use, but a lot of them are things many people use as well. So between now and the finalized OS release, I should have them all done. And if worst case, we can never set the tiles ourselves... at least I'd rock some custom metro style icons on my taskbar.
But if we do get this working... I was actually thinking last night about this. If we were able to achieve the correct look for the tile icons, I suppose it would be 100% possible to have practically nothing living on the taskbar in Windows 8 (besides the current open desktop application). Everything could be bound to the Start Menu and grouped accordingly in theory.
-TYPØ
I am also looking for a solution. I really want all my programs to have the tile icon.
What i already did is make a white icon for some programs and then specify it as the icon.
Like this you have the icon in the tile (downsized ofc) but the tile itself isn't filled with a background color.
I looks better than the full colored icons from before but i still want the whole metro tile look.

You can read all about "metro enabled desktop browsers" when you get some free time. It's a cool idea, but unfortunately, you can only have one.
Could someone who knows how to make Tiles not make a custom tile app that can then handle custom image and file path, so we just update the details within the app so it points the the right place? So we could install the placeholder with the new set details and pop the icons are Larg and Small and offer booting the exe?
I have NO idea how to make tiles but I just thought maybe that could be a way?

Windows Phone has custom tile apps...Wiztiles is one I use. A user can create custom tiles using pictures they have on their phone. These tiles can then be used to link to specific functions. The function I use it for is to point to websites. You can have it open many of the built in apps on WinPhone. It will open email and draft a new email for you with contact, subject and even the body of the mail drafted...all you have o do is hit send, or edit then send. Same with sms. It can be used to dial a contact or perform a search in the marketplace or Bing app. So it doesn't just open an app, it opens and performs an initial action in the app. Not sure how much of a leap it would be to have it point to 3rd party apps, but the basic idea is there.
The website the OP posted which was this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9527644/launching-a-desktop-application-with-a-metro-style-app actually does have a method on creating an app to launch a desktop app if anyone wants to try it. Me I'm not that great with code.
a tip for hex editors, just DUI hackers: twinui.dll UIFILES.
I think that it's possible, because you can open internet explorer desktop from internet explorer immersive
@Ka-la I've tried some time ago, but twinui.dll get corrupted... (Next time I will retry )

I managed to size content in my tiles in RTM pretty succesfully, not sure why you corrupt it. Im not using Windows 8 at the moment so I cannot really help. I remember there were templates for many variant of tiles (widewithpicture and smallwithpicture and so on). If there is one for that applies to desktop apps, it might be possible to apply a metro one to it
I'll give it a shot once im using Windows 8 but cant promise anything.
Maybe i had wrong edits in wrong place
