I don't know when this started happening, but I can no longer install apps. When I try to install an apk from the sd card, I click install and it immediately gives the error message "Application not installed."
I was having problems installing apps from the market, as well, and read a post that suggested unmounting the sd card first, then trying to install the app from the market. This does work. However, I can't very well unmount the sd card then install an apk from it...
I did use adb to change the default install location to the sd card awhile back, but I just reset it to 0 (automatic) and I still get the same error message. I have plenty of room on both the phone and the card.
What's wrong?
This very well may be a different issue altogether, but some phones that have done this in the past have just required a cache clear in the market. Just go settings > applications > market > clear cache
Again, probably something else, but have seen this issue in alot of different android phones.

Exactly same for me from today (maybe yesterday). HTC Desire, original ROM. WTF? I was already thinking about virus, but probobly its stupid idea. What's going on?
I cannot install apps from SD nor from Market.
I had an issue with this too kept getting "unknown reason 18" put new SD card in and no problems since

Yea, your sd card is dead. A new one will fix the issue.
Sent from my Nexus One
It's probably not a dead sd card, but more likely to be a single file.
You need to delete smdl2tmp1.asec from the .android-secure folder on the sd. You can't see this file with an on phone file manager, so you either have to use terminal emulator, or connect to a pc..

How are you looking at the .android-secure folder because as stated earlier, you cannot see the contents from the phone, you have to mount to a PC...

As the title suggests, the full version of this game was finally released today. BEWARE, THE SITE KEEPS CRASHING DUE TO THE NUMBER OF HITS:

but there are different versions for different android phones and I still haven't found the right one! The fact that the site keeps crashing due the volume of people trying to get the game means that I have only been able to download 2 versions, the desire version and the desire z. I don't even know if there is a version that will work for us yet but, if anyone has the right apk for the HD2 then please post it here.

+1 I also have the same problem. I have a stock nexus one rom by tytung, and I cant get this game to work. Any solutions?
It is also in the market. I am downloading it now.
my question might be a bit off topic (don't want to create another thread), sorry about that, i have read in several threads that i need to unmount and then mount my sd card to install angry birds. just wanted to know how that unmounting/mounting procedure will affect the files in my sd card. basically, is there a possibility to loose all the data/files in the sd card? cheers

as far as I know its not actually unmounting the card, obv we're running android from the card so therefore all sorts of problems would occur no??
I think it just pretends to unmount the card......
not entirely sure though....
Either way, Ive never had any issues.
Also unmounting drastically improves the speed of marketplace downloads......
Not been able to install this bloody game though........... about to try unmounting.
Ive been told it can be installed via ADB, however this involves dl'ing the entire android SDK....... all for a 12meg game about bloody birds........
anyway..... lol

Method 1: Go to settings and unmount your SD card. Then open the Market and Download and Install Angry Birds, this will be succesfull and afterwards you can mount your SD Card again.
Method 2: Download Angry Birds (http://www.mediafire.com/?6e1yfy5yg6912nk) and copy it to your SD Card. Next, move the file from the SD Card to internal memory with ASTRO or any file manager. You can place it in the 'cache' folder or something like that. Then unmount your SD card, go to the folder and install the .apk. After the installation is complete, you can mount your SD card again
P.S. Unmounting your SD card will not shut down your Android or make you lose any settings/features. You can safely mount and unmount the SD Card

It'd be nice to get SD Card to unmount on my hd2 with mccm 1.5 build :/ ...
It says unmounting in progress and that's about it - never unmounts it and if I exit and come back to settings - shows option available to unmount - so no angry birds for me
ive been trying to figure this out since yesterday but i am completely lost and really need help..
this started yesterday. i had my phone connected with adb and pulled some files (LatinIME.apk, framework-res.apk). i did not push or delete any. around the same time i download fx camera. all the work i did was actually just on the computer. the only thing i did on the phone around that time was use root explorer to check the name of the .apk for fx camera.
im not sure if any of that could possibly mean anything but i thought maybe it was worth mentioning.
here are the symptoms. right after i was done the phone was acting sluggish and crappy (it always does when i disconnect from usb since i switched to froshedyo v10) so i rebooted. upon booting up, 90% of apps were missing. i didnt feel like using titanium backup to manually "ok" each install, so i opted for a fairly recent NAND backup to restore to. i did but upon booting up, the same apps were missing.. very weird right? i know they were there when i made the backup.. so now i decided i had to use titanium. but when i began i noticed that it wouldnt install any app. it would hang on the "installing" screen forever. i rebooted and this time tried an app from the market, only to have the same results.
i did try wiping everything and starting fresh (with froshedyo v10). a strange thing happened. after logging in and setting up the basics i left it alone to restore the apps. when i checked later i had the notification, "applications partially restored". i never had that before.. it seemed like maybe a few more apps were there, but not much. i was mostly in the same boat. and again, titanium backup and market would not install any apps..
please help.. whats going on??
---------latest info--------
i wiped everything and tried to start fresh with a brand new copy of nonsensikal 16.1. no apps were restored, and i am unable to install or uninstall any app on the phone. it will just hang on the installing/uninstalling screen.
i have done multiple wipes and flashes, testing each time to see if anything is working, but it has not worked once. i can not install or uninstall any apps.
Were you using Apps2sd? I wonder if it could be something with that. Especially if your rom seems to be fine. Is everything else showing up on your sd card?
the file manager on the phone shows all my sd card contents just fine.
i believe when i first installed this rom about a week ago i did find an option somewhere in settings that said "choose location to install apps" (i chose external) and "allow moving of apps to external" (i chose yes).

I don't think you have a market problem...it sounds like an sd card issue which would explain alot of the symptoms including issues when unmounting from pc. If all your apps are installed on the sd and the card doesn't mount right they will "dissapear" as you have described. Try changing the setting to install apps back to internal and then apps should install. If apps install after you do that it probably means the sdcard is corrupted so you will need to back up the files on your sd and then reformat the card. PLEASE remember to back up the sd card before reformatting since it has your nand backups on it. The market fix is only a fix for apps not showing in the market not on the phone.
lol its ok rhamej.
i think i should clarify though that i do have a market. it may be worth noting that i used to have a blue themed market, which during this problem seems to have reverted to the stock green market. but i do have a market.
when i try to install from the market, it just kind of stalls when i accept the terms and permissions needed by the app. like, when i click the final "ok" which should then lead to the app actually beginning to download, it just stops. doesnt freeze the market or FC, its almost like the button is unresponsive.
when i try to install an app via file manager from sd card, it hangs on the "installing" screen. same with titanium backup.
----------developments------------
i couldnt stand not having my apps so i did a NAND back to nonsensikal. my apps were all restored this time but im still having problems installing.
from the sd card: hangs on install.
from the market: now will download, but hangs on install.

quick question. what format should my micro sd card be in? i know i formatted it right around the time i got it, to FAT32. im assuming thats correct but i would like to double check. google isnt answering my question fast enough..
still no progress.
i wiped everything, flashed a new nonsensikal 16.1. apps didnt automatically come back. i can not install or uninstall apps on the phone. they all hang on the installing/uninstalling screen.
how could this have happened? how can i fix it? i will gladly do a more thorough wipe. i wiped data and davlick. what else could i do to completely reset my phone to fix this problem? that is assuming that there is no other ideas of options.. i hope there is!
edit: in regards to previous ideas, i reformatted my sd card (FAT32) and replaced all the files.

You could try the flashback 21 file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792026
That should take you back to stock and replace your custom recovery with the default one. You could then re-root. I don't know if that's what you want, but that would be about as complete of a reset as you could get as far as I know.
Does anyone else know if this is the best option? I would hate to mislead...
I had a problem similar to this after I dropped my phone. I could not install any apps (market or .apk) and reading of my SD card was spotty at best. What fixed it for me was first deleting the .android-secure folder on the sd card. [NOTE!: this may delete some/all apps/app data you have so I hope you have a backup]. I have no idea why but the .android-secure was not happy at all ;] I believe you have to delete it on a computer because android file managers just can't do it.

Did you put all your files back on your sd card after reformatting it? I would try reformatting the card and then see if it works before you put your files back on. Like the previous poster said the android_secure folder could be messed up and if your copying it back could still cause issues.

well that android_secure thing seems to have been the problem! thank you guys very much! i just deleted it and rebooted and i am now able to install and uninstall apps, both from the sd card and market.
it got to the point where i couldnt connect via usb unless i was in recovery so things were getting pretty frustrating. im glad its over. any guesses what might have caused this craziness?
Just realized I can't install apps to SD like angry birds or minisquadron. I figured I need to unmount SD and then load and it works.
Anyone know how I can fix this issue? I tried searching with no luck
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
are you getting error 18? if you are, i had the same problem today and i searched it on google. people said to delete the file smdl2tmp1.asec in the /sdcard/.android_secure/ directory. unfortunately for me, i didnt have the file so another solution suggeted what you did, unmount sd card, install/update app, mount sd and that worked for me
Once you unmount, install, remount you can then move to SD.
Sent from my Dell Streak
i used to be able to load these items on first try without unmounting.
I think the issue lies with flashing so many roms in the fast few weeks. Going to 322 and back to 318 must have written something to my sd card.
when a new rom comes out, i will move my crap off my sd card, format and try again. That will probably fix it.
i have tried deleting android.secure, data on my external sd, no help.
i also don't have that file on my phone to delete.
I am trying to install an app with an .apk on my sd card. Using the app manage on the phone i try and install it and immediately get the message 'Application not installed'. Usually i would unmount the sd card and try again, and it would usually work, but obviously if the apk is on the sd card, unmounting it makes me no longer able to access the apk to install it. I have also tried the 'Android central sideload wonder machine' to install the app, but got the error 'install failed container error'. I would really like to be able to install this app.
Is there any place that i can put the apk and still be able to access to install it when i have unmounted the sd card, or is there another solution?
Thanks in advance.
Hey
not much specific info in your question so its not poss to give a specific answer, few questions tho...
-is it a system app, e.g. htc camera...
-have you tried to modify the apk, if so, has it been re-signed?
What app are you trying to install?
I am using rafdroid on sd
I have tried two different apps, can knockdown and jet car stunts, both of which failed to install. I haven't modified them.
Thanks.
Cache too small? Would be my first guess but I don't use sd

Its been a while since ive used an sd build, but i remember having similar issues with angry birds, 2 things to try:
1. unmount then remount & try to install
or
2. try installing via your pc using HTCSync
Yay! Installing the application using HTC sync worked
I downloaded HTC sync only yesterday, and removed it thinking i didn't need it!
Thanks again!
I have a Nook Color running CM7 from a Sandisk microSD card (not rooted). Everything was working fine but now I'm getting a ton of "xxx stopped unexpectedly" errors. I'm not aware of anything changing except a lot of updates were downloaded the other day. I have deleted all updates, run App Cache Cleaner, and rebooted using holding the "N" and power button down and choosing "recover" (or "restore" or whatever the other choice is besides reboot) . No change. I addition, avast! is reporting errors. Any ideas? I have a lot of apps installed and would rather not reformat the microSD card and start over.

On an sd install there is no recovery that can let clear anything on the sd. There is just the verygreen script that runs a bunch of text on the screen. If you choose the recovery on emmc, it is making changes to emmc, not the sd. Go to my tips thread linked in my signature and look at item B5, Alternate CWM recovery. Install that and you can wipe things like dalvik-cache (which it sounds like you need to do). Your apps will not be harmed by doing that. It may make things better.
PS, CM7 comes rooted without you having to do anything.

I'm not sure what that means. I never intended to root my NC, I wanted to keep CM on my SD card only. Are you saying I inadvertently rooted my Nook? If I take the microSD card out Nook boots up normally.
PS when I download updates, I get a lot of "package file is invalid" and "Package file was not signed correctly" errors.
PPS avast! reports "Invalid context during scan" for ADW.launcher, Android System, Google Play Store, etc.
No, your stock is still unrooted... unmodified... But when you are running CM7 you are running a rooted AOSP ROM.
If you run stock often, with that SD in, you may be causing the issues since stock is using your SD boot partition as the SD for itself... it will place all of its stuff on that partition... I am not saying this IS the issue, only that it may be.

Dizzy is right. I meant CM7 is rooted not your stock.
If you don't want to do the alternate CWM thing I mentioned in my last post, get root explorer or another root file manager and delete some files. Go to /data/dalvik-cache and delete all the files there. Then reboot. It will take a while to start up while it rebuilds those files. But it should be better.

Ok, stupid question , I DLed the files and un RARed them, how do I copy them to the microSD card root? I put it in a writer and put it in my USB slot, ("dir f:\" shows what I would expect) but when I try to copy the files via Windows explorer (or even at a DOS prompt) it seems to hang. Take the card out of the Nook and insert it into your card reader in your PC. Once your PC recognizes the card, it will show up with a new drive letter. Then copy the files there with Windows Explorer. Eject the card (right click on the drive). Put the card back in the Nook. Boot, holding down the volume up/down keys together. It should boot to the Alternate CWM. Then select advanced and wipe dalvik-cache. Reboot. Should be better.
edit: What kind of card reader are you using? Are you using a micro SD adapter? Sometimes those have write protect slide switches on them.

That post using terminal emulator should have worked for you. But that only clears the dalvik-cache for installed apps. Play Store is a system app. So you need to clear one more cache. Use the same terminal commands but change it to cd /cache/dalvik-cache and do the same rm* command.

Done, Thank you again. The final touch was my file permissions were borked. Rom Manager "fix permissions" wouldn't run. I went into SuperUser and set "permit" on instead of "prompt". Then Rom Manager and ran "fix permissions" Run successful. Then SuperUser again and set permissions back to "prompt". Everything seems to be stable now.
