Hello guys!
In about a week I'm going to the VIP launch event of the new Xperia-line in Brussels. I'll be able to extensively test the new phones and ask questions about them. If there is anything you want to know or want me to try out, please let me know in this topic.
It's Wednesday the 23'd, so you still have some time!

Hey
I'd like to know how all the basic applications are on the Arc, compared to HTC's. I'm talking about the dialer, contacts, calendar, clock and also Facebook integration... those things. I like HTC's, and I don't really like the stocks Android ones, so I'm wondering... No one really looks at those in reviews so far.
And I don't suppose you could install LauncherPro one the phone hehe...
Thanks, and have fun!
Many of us would like to know if the bootloader on the new Xperia phones will be locked. The true USP of Android is it's infinite customizability. Why does SE lock down their bootloaders?
EDIT: Also, I've read about a lot of lag on the Xperia Neo, during homescreen transitions and such. Can you please confirm if this is true? And if yes, how much would you rate it on the annoyance-meter?
EDIT #2: A lot of questions for you! :-D Does SE have any update schedule in place? How long will it take for them to deliver a point release update to their devices once Google releases it?

I guess I can answer those question for you.
1. Bootloader - It will be locked as always. There's no point in trying to convince them, as other companies are now following SE in signing their bootloader and locking it. It is not encrypted anymore, so there's no argument on blaming just SE that locks their bootloader.
2. The neo's video that we saw was running on an older firmware. I have a more current firmware, and it is lagless. I have mentioned that there's a small spike when you have massive amount of widgets that requires information from the internet, and it's been the same on all handsets, not just SE phones. There should be a video of it running lagless soon. I'll be sure to update on that.
3. There's an update planned. Cannot say much since Google hasn't announced anything yet, but it's planned

I can answer 1 and 2 for you already, I suppose. The bootloader will be locked, definately. There is no reason for Sony Ericsson not to lock it, and my guess is many other companies will be locking their bootloaders too pretty soon. The lag will probably be gone. If you look at reviews of the retail units on YouTube (they're rare, but they're there) you can easily tell everything is extremely smooth, even the widget overview thing!
On the update schedule - will definately try to get details of that!

thanks a lot man
Make sure to get the exact retail price in euros for the European market
Ask them about USB-OTG
Playstation Certified?
Please ask if it is Playstation Certified as well. It has the exact same processor and GPU of the Xperia play, so it'll be a little annoying if SE does not allow it to run the Playstation Pocket app.
If it will play the games, I am pretty much sold on this device, especially since the games will be optimized for the Adreno 205 GPU.
EDIT: If you can find a ballpark figure for the price in US dollars that would be swell, it doesn't matter if it's in Euros either.
the certification will probably involve physical controllers
I think if it was PS certified they would have already said so.

+1 to that. I agree that when it comes to the wholesome experience, nothing beats Sense. Android stock simply sucks on integration experience - dialer, home screen, calendar, synchronization, weather animation and so on.

I read a few unconfirmed statements (supposedly from Qualcomm) on the internet about SE employing newer optimised video drivers for the Adreno 205 chip in their new Xperia line.
This would make sense considering how they are pushing gaming with the Play, which uses the same hardware as the Arc. We all know that the Adreno 205 chip with the current drivers will come up short against most of the existing competition in 3D gaming performance, and that's not to mention the stuff coming out later this year. Better drivers won't make it a winner but it would likely create a very noticeable difference.
Again though, this is no more than a rumour. Confirmation of this would be great!

X10 is going to release very soon but it has already a lot of rivals: Google N1, HTC Desire, Motorola Shores (also going to be released soon)
So which Android phone is a true Phone?
The Droid.
I think the desire stands out thanks to HTC's sense interface.
X10 got Mediascape which easily beats everything else out there be it on Android or WinMo or iPhone OS or WebOS + got Timescape which is pretty much a match or better than WebOS great communication UI or better than the rest (Droid/Motoblur or iPhone's missing "unified communication")... the only negativ thing is running on DOnut (v1.6) but SE already said it will be updated - my money is on X10 and a 2.1 update by the Summer...
The Final retail-rom (not the one engadget reviewed) seems to be great! Some reviewers in the Netherlands already have them and they are very impressed by the speed, the screen and media/timescape!
Yes, I heard the same thing from a friend running it since last Fall... heck, when I tried X10 back in November it wasn't that bad already... and it's been 4+ months now, I'm sure they worked out all the kinks - as a matter of fact that was the official reason for postponing the launch date, to make it absolutely bug-free.
SE is top-notch when it comes to UI design, I always said it - it's just they have been always stretched too thin and never had the time to properly finish everything. It's a (resource) management issue and I think it is the same type confusion that caused the demise of Sony during the past decade.
SE should settle on ~2 platforms (plus their proprietary one for the integrated and lower-tier phones) and cut the number of concurrent models in half but every new release should be near flawless, as bug-free as literally possible because when you are asking $500-$1k for a phone it's better be perfect or you will lose its angry owner as a customer forever...

EW! how can you even say that's something worth holding in your hand. craptacular device. by craptacular company..
Well, I am using HTC Legend, and today I got SE X10, so what can I say, X10 has impressive screen but I am worry because it is TFT (and Legend has AMOLED), also Android 1.6 is not a match to an Android 2.1 in Legend (with and without HTC Sense).
Timescape and Mediascape are good and easy ideas, and they are beating HTC Sense in way of multimedia and friends stream (HTC Sense has Friends stream which dosent work so fine).
So, X10 is a preatty good smartphone, here in Croatia it will cost about 4500 kunas about 840 USD.
So, until they release Android 2.1 update on Xperia X10, it will be just a good smartphone with big potential, so SE if you are reading this, go to work!
There's nothing wrong with a TFT screen.

@szlevi
Good luck with getting an upgrade to the OS by the Summer as SE themselves have said it won't be till Q3 oh and by the time SE implement 2.1 what version will the others be at by then?.
I must say from reading your posts throughout the X10 section you seem quite the SE zealot but seriously anyone that bought a W950 and then also bought a W960 lacks a certain credibility IMO.
As for your claims about Timescape and Mediascape just being the best how's the Crystal ball doing as from what I've read they both suffer when updating. They may look pretty and functional when not very full but once they have lots of data to deal with they slow right down. Maybe you should have a device in hand to see just how well it performs when full of data before claiming it to be best.
Personally SE lost me from UIQ3 and nothing they have done since then has tempted me back till now either. It will be interesting to see if they do manage to actually launch a relatively bug free device for once. As although this is there aim they seem to keep falling short of this objective, it will interesting to see just how well the X10 does and what ordinary non SE fans make of it.
Marc

whats up with having both the legend and the X10`? doesn't that get kinda expensive.
Anyways, I did like the HTC magic, untill it got thrown into the wall in anger, because I was pisst off at a friend
And I have always loved SE, unlike Nokia(that I used to like before) are they actually trying different OS's etc.
+ I feel like they have better designs etc.

I know that, I read it in another thread a while after I posted this. So the "prior posts" thing, is kinda wrong to say.. since it wasn't mentioned in this thread.
And it wasn't posted in this thread, so I don't really see the big problem here.
I'm having my doubts, I'm actually thinking between the Nexus One and the X10, I'm currently liking the Droid due to the keyboard only because I email alot, and would not like to go for a blackberry.
The x10 seems fantastic, just that the absence of a physical qwerty may put me off.

Indeed. Once you go physical QWERTY, you never go back !
This might sound stupid, but only reason I'd get X10 than other phones (like Galaxy S, Milestone, Desire etc.) is cos the X10 looks much better, and my 'blind loyalty' to SE. But in terms of specs/features... well... X10 is really lacking.

Best phone for less than 150€!!! However, SE made horrible job with software... Fully working AOSP 2.1 would be perfect in this moment

Thumb Up:
- Price
- Size
- Basic funcions (email, browser..)
- Perfect if you want (slower) functions of a best performaces (and hi price) phone
Thumb Down:
- Battery
- >>> M U L T I T O U C H <<<
- Front Camera (to keep phone price low, I guess)
- SE Interface (replace asap with LauncherPro, ADW Launcher or similar..)
- SE Upgrade (At the moment no upgrade to Android 2.2 or greater scheduled)
I agree with member above me.
X8 is the best entry level android, cheap phone with HVGA screen, other type in the same price range give you phones with QVGA screen, 3 MP camera is fair enough, better than 2 MP from Samsung I5500, Eclair is good enough for me, just need to root it and enable App2SD make Froyo can be forgotten. Can play many games without lags, slightly smoother than Samsung I5500. The drawback is no multitouch, Samsung Spica I5700 multitouch can be enabled via SamdroidMod, but there is no multitouch too in Samsung I5500 after Froyo upgrade, so I'll be satisfied enough with dual touch, hope this is coming soon for X8. And there is no navigation key that made pain in the ass for me when editing text in messaging and browsing.
Sorry for my bad english...
Not a very good poll.
I chose all the options.

Hello,
As someone once post here my opinion about the X8 is like love/hate relationship.
There is times when I really love my phone and times when I really hate it.
But for it`s money it`s great phone.
And if you never use Android in my opinion it`s easy to use this phone.

Is's so cheap~
It's a Great phone for it's price, It's beautifull, really well designed compared to other devices. It's solid and SE quality made. In Hardware we can't really complain, like I said, for it's price... In Software, well good... except, what we all know, BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE from SE... If it weren't that it would be a great! phone.
i buy this phone for 200$ dolares on amazon, any other phone for that price is better than this X8
Pro's
>Form Factor
>Design
>Price
>Great Screen Size and Resolution
Con's
>Multi Touch
>Camera
>Update's
in this price range tier its direct competitor it would be Optimus One P500 it has
>Multi Touch
>2.2 Android update and can be upgraded to 2.3?
>Higher Ram 512
>Better Camera w/ Auto Focus/Face and Smile Detection
>More Screen Colors
>Bigger Screen .2"
>A Bit Higher Available Phone Memory
Much Expensive than X8 around $25-$30 more, but for all those features its worth it, if X8 have those features too, then X8 would be one of the BEST Android Mid Range
Amazon dont sell lg optimus ONE .
X8 is a great phone. i really love it
Everything is good except software update. I really hate the abandonment from SE.

It looks like the playstation phone will be on big red. I was going to wait until year's end and pick up whatever dual core monster is out there that i really like, but with the exception of this phone only being single core, it does have a lot of what I wanted anyways and more.

2. Android 2.3
3. Playstation controls
4. Newly announced Playstation Network store/studio or whatever the Android link up is called.

Xperia Play Confirmed for Verizon
Xperia Play just got released at Sony's Ericsson's MWC conference and it's confirmed for Verizon and start shipping in March! Unfortunately specs haven't be released yet and it's still made by Sony Ericsson, .
But i'm not going to lie, I'm kind of excited and want it to do well.

Neat, thanks for the info.

"Sony held the Sony Ericsson's MWC 2011 press event today, where they finally revealed the long-rumored PlayStation-inspired phone. Labeled the Xperia Play, the device utilizes Google's Android Gingerbread platform, is "PlayStation certified," and is on the Verizon Network.
"This Spring, expect to see a lot of people with their heads down and thumbs up," said Sony Ericsson's marketing head for North America, Peter Farmer. "Xperia Play combined with the power of the Verizon Wireless network gives you everything you need in a smartphone and the one thing you want – the ultimate gaming experience."
Due out this March, the phone will launch with 50 downloadable titles, play PSN games, and eventually be able to host original PlayStation titles. Sony's Kazuo Hirai teases that the phone will come pre-installed with a "legendary PS One title." My money is on Final Fantasy VII. The Xperia play will also come with Asphalt Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, and Tetris already on it.
Other games will include EA's FIFA series and the Android version of Dead Space. The phone is capable of utilizing Epic's Unreal Engine. Sony is also partnering with Unity Technologies to bring their Unity Engine to the Xperia Play. Approximately 350,000 games exist that utilize this engine, and this tech would allow those titles to be ported to the device.
Other stats:
-60 frames-per-second via the Snapdragon 1Ghz processor
-Adreno 205 graphical processor
-4-inch multi-touch display
-Four-way d-pad
-Alphabetical keys
-Left and right shoulder buttons
-Dual analog touch pads to mimic analog sticks
-5.0 megapixel camera"

Sony Ericsson's new Xperia Play smart phone may be supported by PlayStation games, but that doesn't mean that existing fans will have a leg up if they buy the phone.
GameSpot talked to Nathan Vautier, managing director of Sony Ericsson UK and Ireland, who admitted that any content previously purchased through the PSN store will have to be re-bought for the phone. "[Xperia Play owners] will have to re-purchase games, so it's not totally integrated."
One of the advantages of the Android-based phone is its ability to play PlayStation titles, and the phone will launch in March with 50 games available. Sony is already teasing that the device will come installed with a "legendary PSone title.

I have the X10, it was rooted.
Sony had a hard time with updates (untimely/didn't give us basic features/said features were impossible) but in all honesty they have done ok with updates...
We ended up getting 720p with the 2.1 update (long after 2.2 was out, we got an old OS Sony claimed was better than stock 2.2), we ended up getting glitched dualtouch after Sony told us it would never happen, and most recently they announced we will be getting 2.3.3 later in the year.
They say with the way Sony built their 2.3 ROMs they can provide more timely updates because they left it closer to stock Android.
Sony's support is really odd, they aren't truthful, they are behind the competition, but they do seem to work on the phones, they will probably update, I just don't know how timely it will be.
The Play looks promising, but the ROM will probably feel sluggish and don't count on Sony for anything wonderful, that will come from XDA Devs.
But I give Sony credit, they appear to be moving towards a more open concept with the new lines, they are unlocking the bootloader so updates will happen, from them or XDA, it will happen.
Latest rumor is that the Verizon version will be stock Android, and even the engadget preview of the Verizon version is stock android. The bigger question is whether the Verizon version will have a locked bootloader...
I am chomping at the bit for this phone!
yet we still have no info and date and price

same here does not depend on the fw looks like depends on what brand your phone is
from that link nothing looks interesting, just hanashi which is a copy from whatsapp
this is the list I see
several extenders/plugins for timescape (free)
several games (mostly free)
IM called hanashi (free)
dunno if depends on the market's region
Same here i have it too
Not for me... I only see the standard Market options and nothing more! May be it takes time to update, I guess.
btw I think this is obvious, but you have to be on stock firmware to see this 'sony ericsson button'
For everyone else, you can just go to the market and search for Sony Ericsson to see everything mentioned above.

Mostly due to the Psp phone.. "short lived it may be... lack of tegra it has"
May the fail be with it..
Today we’ve launched our very own channel in Android Market. We’re the first mobile phone manufacturer to do this and I’m really excited to see what we will be able to use it for. It should start to become available for most of you out there starting from today. It is an operator dependant feature though so it will not be there for all of you but most of you will get it.
What it means is that the “My Apps” option in Android Market is replaced by a link to our specific channel. (Don’t worry – “My Apps” is still available as well if you press the menu key.)
We will use this channel for many things, as a starting point this is our plan:
- Provide recommendations to help you find the best games & apps that enhance your Sony Ericsson ‘most entertaining’ experience.
- Provide a way to easily find original apps from Sony Ericsson such as Timescape plugins etc.
- From time to time offer exclusive games & apps only available in this channel.
- Help our developer partners promote their apps & games giving them a highlighted market space to our consumers.
Navigating through Android Market finding the right stuff is sometimes a bit tricky and this will give us a unique opportunity to more easily help consumers finding the stuff that we often get asked about or things that we know really enhances the user experience of our phones.
I’m sure there are more ways we could use this channel going forward so if you have ideas or suggestions on what you think we should do just shout away in the comments section!

amen for that
the only thing that makes xperia play interesting is the ability to play games (good ones according to SE) but that's why I have my PSP
also most are looking for GB and dual core devices now so basically SE is like 4 years behind
Who needs that button?
I don't...

Not happy about this myself. The My Apps button was the most used part of the market for me to check for updates and uninstall things. Now SE have removed that and made it harder to get to while giving me easy access to great bloatware which we spend out time trying to get rid of!
It might not be so bad if my X10i was capable of giving update notifications but they only appear once I load the My Apps page anyway!
So SE haven't learnt the requirements of an Android user after all
Earlier RootzWiki and AndroidPolice both received leaks from a "extremely reliable source" and they both obtained 2 different pictures of the new Ice Cream Sandwich interface running on the Nexus S.
You can read the whole article here:
http://venturebeat.com/2011/08/11/delicious-android-ice-cream-sandwich-images-leak-online/
Here are the leaks:

"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

ICS is also to include:
Brand-new launcher and app drawer, with screenshots of both featured exclusively on RootzWiki - with what appears to be a task switcher icon on the homescreen, though it could be something else.
Camera now has a panorama mode (not pictured)
Gmail has been totally re-themed to go with the new OS (not pictured)
Nexus S will be receiving ICS via update, but the "Nexus Prime" will be getting it first
Mostly UI changes - many older devices (< 1 year old) should be able to run it
Personally, I feel like these are fake. However, the AndroidPolice writers were heavily defending the credibility of their source in the comments section of the original post.
My reasons for being skeptical include:
At Google IO, they announced ICS would get a complete UI overhaul. This is the same basic layout we've been seeing for a long time.
The phone icon is the same as from eclair. A phone icon inside a sqaure, while the newest phone icon in gingerbread is just a phone with no square. Why would google use "new" icons for most of gapps but not the phone?
All the icons are the exact same ones from the Honeybread T-Mobile theme (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gfxandroid.honeybreadtheme&feature=search_result) I'm not sure what the original source of the icons were, but I do know the same icons were "released" way before these leaks.
The signal bar icon is rotated, as is in honeycomb (a tablet thing). The honeybread theme also rotates the signal bar. I don't think google would get rid of the standard bars that's been the same on (as far as I know) every cell phone ever.
To me these just look like a gingerbread build themed with a modified build.prop.
Those are just my 2 cents as of now. There are a couple other things that just don't fit, but then again there are a couple of things that haven't been seen before. I do know that icons can just be used as placeholders when developing and that this is not nearly finished so the final product could (and hopefully) be completely different. What are your opinons?
hmmm... interesting...
why not consider it is still work in progress? at least that is what i would consider it is...
so the same kernel as Gingerbread?
I vote fake as well.

Nexus one will not be having the ice update I guess.. google apps like google video and music and the new android market is so choppy on the nexus one..

I have to disagree. I can't speak for Google video as I don't use it, but Music and the new Market work damn near flawlessly on my device
Not sure of the source of the icons? Have you heard of something called Android 3.0?
Anyway, it looks like the interface is extremely WIP graphics wise, but this definitely seems like the real deal. I just want to know what's going to happen to phones that have softkeys with this release and if ICS phones will have virtual ones as has been speculated.
Also, I feel that the nexus won't be getting an official release of this, especially with the weak GPU.
Fake--
NO real changes, I have blue items in status bar too
That is a Nexus S, this is an N1 thread--
Don't think the N1 could handle ICS--IMHO

lolwhut?
Because you're so experienced with ICS and its requirements?
****ty posts like this are why XDA has turned in to what it is.

The N1 thus far has been able to handle everything even better than most phones that have come out in the past year. The custom kernels and oses for the N1 are incredible.

attacking people like this is what makes this place worse...
Everyone can have his own opinion mate....
Anyways am sure whatever changes are coming will mostly be ported out to our lovely N1 via custom roms thanks to the awesome devs around here!
If wp7 can make good use if the adreno 200, I am pretty sure google can make ics work well on the same gpu.

Thanks for the mature post
A better comment would have been telling me why it will and educating me not chastising me. It is only an opinion as pointed in my "IMHO" comment. I for one hope it will as I am only into 6 months of a 2 year contract with TMO. Brought the N1 to TMO from another carrier. I should have said that I didn't think it would work thru a normal OTA, but that with devs like Cyanogen, it may. Also, I don't know if anyone knows how much is being changed and if hardware will come into play. If you already know the source code enlighten us. I am no programmer, just a flasher. If this article is accurate it should work and seems to be little changed to a laymen. But, who knows yet?
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2101386/android-ice-cream-sandwich-leaked
Either way, it is my opinion at some point the N1's hardware or internal memory won't handle the newer OS's. ICS may not be that point yet. Hopefully never. We are running sense roms, thanks to folks like evil etc, but not without issues for a lot of folks. Bad blocks seem to hamper the N1 in some of these roms and the touch screen is not the best.
Another thread with varying opinions, albeit two months old--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137301
Either way I have thick skin and let's hope it works great
Ken
Don't know if these links have been posted before or their accuracy, but they seem to support our HOPE for ICS and talk about Nexus Prime. If this is old news sorry! Two pages.
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/compa..._nexus_one_vs_google_nexus_prime_rumours.html
If that's ics than its atrocious.
This will be the third straight dud out of Google.
I can't fathom "most work we've put into a release" and "total ui overhaul" result in that.
Seriously if that's real might as well hand over the reigns to crapple.
Quick thought,
Where it says android version, instead of sayin ICS shouldnt it say 2.4? To me it looks like somesones just recolored and renamed bits of CM7 I reckon this is fake but i guess we'll just have to wait and see
Good Point
But, maybe they haven't finalized a version number yet. Would think they would have though.
Trying to remember if GB leaks had number or said Gingerbread.

Shouldnt be that hard to track down. Since every single android release has had "leaks". Im sure whoever did this would have done that as well (if it were fake)
Agreed, having ICS means nothing
But, all I remember on pics is 2.3--
or, the GR122 or whatever the number is. It dosen't show on the MIUI rom I am on atm. Think it does on Cyan.
Either way after further research and faith in Cyan, I think we may see ICS on the N1. Unless some new info comes out. It would be nice because GB has reached it's wow factor to me at this time.
