Phone is Making Random Phone Calls - Nexus S General

Two of my work colleagues came up to me this morning and were curious to why I had called them. One colleague received a call yesterday evening at 10:30PM and the other received one at 9AM this morning. Keep in mind the call my other colleague received at 9AM this morning was when I was sitting at my desk.
My call log shows nothing in regards to calling these people.
Is anyone else having this problem or have heard of it?
Both of their names begin with BR. Not sure?

??!!! OH ****...did u install some of this apps?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976913
it's maybe laggy, maybe Malware
if it's gonna be again, just flash it to any custom rom (IF U DON'T WANT TO DO THAT, try to wipe everything, do the factory reset+(if i was you) erase USB storage too)
or
type this on the dial pad
*2767*3855# (it's gonna delete everything !)
or
Manual method is to place the phone in Restore Mode (Power off (shut down phone), Vol up + power on )
Factory Reset then Clear Cache (it's gonna delete everything !)

2.3.X+ was immune to those apps.
Note that, since everyone on Nexus S is presumably running at least Android 2.3, the vulnerability those apps exploited is already patched, rendering the malicious code ineffective. It's only people with older OS versions that need to be concerned. Yet another argument for taking responsibility for software updates out of the hands of manufacturers and carriers.

ok, so did you try to wipe everything? after when you find your "Phone is Making Random Phone Calls"?

I'm new to Android so I just want to confirm I should do the factory wipe?
I don't know anything about ROM type etc...
I don't really have anything " saved" on my phone. A few APPs, I mean literally two or three.
My only concern would be the contacts but those are synced with Google so I shouldn't have any issues. As far as texts, browsing history, photo's, none of that stuff really matters to me.
Should I do the wipe?

I would.
Sent from either my Nexus S, N1 or telepathically using two tin cans and some string.

Do it....no choice

Do you use bluetooth headets?
I read in other android forums for other phones that some ppl had similar issues when they were using really old bluetooth headsets and was causing random dialing. This is supposing your phone's dialer isn't compromised.

I don't use Bluetooth headsets. Just use Bluetooth in my car.

My mom's NS used to make random calls and she uses a bluetooth headset. It was a really old one. I got her a new one and so far her phone hasn't been making any random calls. Also I manually updated hers to 2.3.3 as well. Are you on 2.3.3?

Typing delay + more!

alright when i first got my phone i never had a problem with a typing delay. but now my phone is 6 mopnths old and i am now having lots of problems. fristly a few weeks ago i had to do a complete factory reset becuse my phone totally went rretarted. i was sitting in a restuarant and i was txting someone and her name is tiffany. i texted her and then the next message she sent me showed her number in stead of her name(like from tiffany now says from 72789846) but i didnt think anything of it like maybe she had her friends phone or something. so i didnt do anything about it. and then i got home that night and fell asleep and when i awoke i had 2 missed called so i clicked missed calls on the htc home plug in and the phone totally locked up. i reset it and upod reset i found that i cannot make calls. cant recieve calls. it said i didnt have service. couldnt go online . lost all my contacts. and the only thing i could do is text. i was furious of course. this would be the second time this year i lost all my contacts! So i called sprint and they could do nothing for me. So i did a factory reset and sucked it up!. this itself is a huge prblem becuase i no longer trust my phone at all. but i reset it and then found the new sprint rom so i loaded that on there (2nd format basicly) and its all good i suppose. its a little bit slower than it used to be. but now my cpu is as 90-95% with nothing running. slowing down my ppc to almost a standstill. it takes a very long time to open anything. but thats not why im bothered. now whenever i type the typeing delay is sooooooooo badd.. i will type a full text message and it wont type anything then i will put my phone down and 5 seconds or so later the message will be typing itself!. i want this to be fixed. also i want to speed up my phone because its very agrivating. a cheap 20 dollar phone is faster than this 350 dollar POS. but i am forced to live with my phone. and its a dam shame because i love the phone. i love everything you can do. but i want to be able to do those things well..i mean i paid 350$ for a good phone not frustration. if anyone can be of assistance please post thank you

I am sorry, that is one of the hardest things to read I have ever seen on this board. Good luck to you and to whoever can read that and find an answer for you.
OP: I have to agree with RevSand.
I Tried - really, I did. But, the simple fact is, my eyes crossed trying to read that ?paragraph?
You'll have much better luck getting a response if you
A) shorten that whole thing to include relevant details
B) don't type it like you're typing a text message
C) Line breaks. Paragraph Breaks.
People on message boards (myself included) generally browse through pretty quickly. VERY long winded and difficult to read posts often get read 5% of the way through, and not finished. I'm sure you can see why this would be detrimental to your getting a response/solution.
Have a great day,
Ben

I suggest finding a reliable ROM from either DCD kitchens or no2chem. Then uploading it into your phone ( sprint rom ofcourse ) maybe the tweaks they have made can help you out.
But if you want to stay at a stock rom ( with out GPS or Rev.A ) im sure DCD has a very stable rom for that too, or you can exchange your phone for a new one if everything else fails.

I second [email protected]$'s sentiments. I'm using DCD's 3.0.1 ROM and it is great!
The 15 minute solution is to first reflash your phone with the latest Official Sprint Mogul ROM 3.35:
http://www.htc.com/us/FAQ_Detail.aspx?p_id=75&act=sd
This will not only hard reset your device (erases all data), it will upgrade both the operating system and the radio. The upgraded radio enables GPS and also enables even faster data speeds.
Copy the .exe file of dotFred's PIM backup v2.8 (for WM5 & WM6)
http://www.dotfred.net/default.htm
into a directory (doesn't matter) on your Mogul and schedule it to regularly, AUTOMATICALLY backup all of your Contacts (and whatever else you want) onto your MicroSD every night.
There is LOTS of detailed information in this great forum about this. For further info on the Stock Sprint upgrade you can also check out:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20641
Depending upon your job or environment, it is possible that you subjected your Mogul to an electric shock or EMP of some sort that might happen again (which could erase or corrupt your personal data), so you probably want to make a habit of backing up/synchronizing your unit with your desktop PC.
If you want to use a customized ROM, I would recommend one of DCD's latest. At the top of the "Titan Upgrading" section of XDA-Developers, you'll see DCD's latest ROM "dcd's titan ROMs & kitchen 3.0.4" or you can do a search for "DCD titan Rom 3.0.1" and select the .exe "Sprint ROM" made by |||bored||| posted by DCD in the first post. These can speed up your device even more and offer some nice features.
However there are some careful (but easy) steps that you'll want to follow when upgrading to a customized ROM, so I strongly recommend reading the forums carefully. I found this one helpful:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17667
Also, because most of the customized ROMs are streamlined to operate faster and more efficiently, some features that you MIGHT want have been disabled or removed. Browsing the forums can help identify how to re-enable/re-install any of these that are important to you. That being said, they've added LOTs of nice features not available on the stock ROM.

Reporting a major bug

If you use the camera and then lock your phone without closing the camera app some very strange things can happen to your phone. I did this for the first time a week ago and my internal SD card got completely wiped to the point that the phone could not recognize it and I had to do a format of the card.
Then I did it again yesterday just by accident and it reset my apps. What I mean is my browser acted like it was a new install and had reset to the factory settings. My market place app did the same thing and now my Samsung Social Hub keeps crashing when I try to run it which sucks because it is tied into my email and messaging and those apps don't work anymore.
Doesn't happen with mine. replace your phone.
Also this is on a stock i9000 it has not been rooted.

I'm getting really bored of reading comments such as yours. Just because people are experiencing problems with their phones and are reporting them here, does not mean they are trolls. You have presented no f*cking proof this person is trolling.
To the OP, that's (obviously) not normal behaviour. You could try either restoring factory settings if you can access the boot menu (search here for "samsung vol home up" if you need instructions), or seeking out a replacement from where ever you purchased the phone...
Jeeze, settle down you two.
@OP Have you updated your firmware? Beeing rooted/non-rooted doesn't fix nor does it create bugs, rather, it's the firmware. You can update your firmware through Kies or download it from this site and flash with ODIN. You may as well root your device whilst your at it.

Xoom being Wiped Every Power Off

Hi All,
Every time I press the power switch off at the back to turn off - I get a partial system wipe.
I installed one or two apps then started having issues turned off and on again and working fine. Installed a few more apps - then issues now everytime I power off with the power button I get the first few apps and lose everything else.
I have tried a reset to factory defaults but that leaves the few apps on ( LinkedIn, DroidIn and Facebook).
I am also left with my Hotmail (ActiveSync) still syncing.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am in Ireland using a 3G & WiFi and on Androind 3.0.1 out of the box.
Thanks
Rob

Do you think the problem is related to the apps you downloaded?
Hey,
I tried uninstalling the apps before the wipe and leaving on before the wipe.
Bizarrely I remove all my music (through Windows) and even that is restored?
Given its out of the box since Friday it may be returned.
Given the quality of the Honeycomb it does require power off....... damn frustrating.

I would grab your stock images from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049485 and just start over. Something is not right.
Hi,
I was clinging onto the hope of avoiding this but in the back of my mind... expecting it.....
Given I have little idea on what to do can you treat me like a newbie and walk me through - or should I recognise my shortcomings and return for a swap out?

I would not return it, this is the best way to learn . I would start here, a friend of mine wrote a really good guide for unrooting. If you follow it, it will get you where u need to be. Read my warning below. If you need more help, feel free to come by the #xoom irc channel, link is in my signature.

DO NOT DO THE LAST FASTBOOT COMMAND:

That post seems to suggest unrooting - not sure how this is relevant, I have not rooted the device - done nothing other than install a few apps and copy my music on....

I usually don't suggest this as I'm with bwcorvus about using the opportunity to learn, but as you are on an EU model (I'm assuming) with 3G, you might be better off with an exchange. Something is definitely not right and it's so new...you didn't even have time to break it yet!
Just exchange...the new one will be great! Then if you want to update, root and customize I know there is a method here for all of that.

[Q] lost my galaxy s2 - utrack not active :((((

Hi all
I lost my galaxy s2 two days ago. I called my phone a few times until the person who has found it, shut it down.
Unfortunately I did not activate utrack. All I have my IMEI. Here in Switzerland only my provider does blacklist IMEI-Numbers, so that sucks too.
Anybody got any idea, or should I leave it??
There is not much you can do if you didn't activate tracking in phone(samsungdive) or use some aplication for that purpose.
Tracking is i think.by.default active if u logged in to samsung account

This app could have helped you, had you not called the number and warned the person that you are looking for the phone.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lookout.labs.planb&feature=search_result
if the phone is still on you can still try to install that app via the link above.
Sign into the market on your PC using your google account.
Choose to install "Lookout Plan B" to your phone.
If it is on and with network connection, with your data remaining, it should be installed.
if who found your phone know a little bit about android i think the first thing he does is to delete your gmail account to prevent you from install apps from the web...so if you can't lock by imei there's nothing else you can do i guess

hey guys
Many Many thanks for that great input. I am talking about Plan B. The chance that somebody knowing about android found it, isnt that big. I did install it over the market and it said, that its going to be installed, so i am praying for my luck know.
Will keep you guys up-to-date.
Thanks once again.
for all these things (Plan B and Dive) to even work the phone must be on, must be on 3G data plan service, or be on Wifi. If you had the data off when you lost it, and the finder does not enable it by some rare miracle, you will never find it.
Most probably you are screwed OP. I lost my SGS1 the same way.
You can however try sending to your number a text message that says "Get $$ reward for this phone, call XXXXX" or something similar, and hope the crook will decide to return your phone. For this to work the phone must only be on and must be on a cell network (no data required).
Last option is to print reward ads and stick them to light poles in the area where you lost the phone.

hmmm... And I thought my lost-phone-karma was positive, since I found and SGS1 a few months ago and returned it to the owner immediatly.
well, my only chance is, the phone will be connected to a wireless connection, since ive got my sim blocked through the provider. The hope is gone but who knows, miracles can happen
Firstly, good luck carthago, I hope you find your phone!
Secondly, and just for curiosity, does anyone know if could Samsung DIVE, Tektrak, Lookout and those similar tools can operate if the person who find the phone do a factory reset or flash a new firmware? I doubt that it could be possible, however I'm not an expert.
If there is no way for those tools to work after a factory reset or a flashing a new firmware, their usefulness is limited to the case that the thief either an idiot (regarding the factory reset) or computer illiterate (regarding re-flashing the phone).
In the case of free tools, any remote possibility of help is welcome, of course (better than nothing), however there are also many paid apps which purport to be THE solution this kind of problem.
No they don't work after factory reset

All those tools are good IF you lost the phone, realized it right away, ran to the nearest computer and activated the tools, provided the phone is still reachable and on data network.
For the crooks who STEAL the expensive phones, the business is a fine tuned machine. 10 people run around stealing, and the immediately turn them off or remove battery. then they bulk-sell them to phone hackers who produce brand new freshly installed phones that can be sold at local flea market
Deactivating the IMEI I think will do anything only if the new owner tries to activate the phone on the same network.
First I was calling my phone again and again, cause I thought perhaps it was laying around somewhere and so I could hear it. But then that asshole had found out how to shut it down.
If you find something and theres no name and nothing on it, ok, if you keep that perhaps thats not exactly stealing. But if you shutdown a phone, because the owner is calling again and again, that is STEALING!

I was just wondering: one of the features of those tracking apps is the possibility of wiping your data if you lose your phone. Therefore, if wiping your data in this way (which I don't know if it corresponds to a factory reset or is just a 'soft wipe') means that it will be no longer possible to locate your phone?

[Q] My wifes G2 was remotely Hacked

Has this happened to anyone elses G2? I am on verizon with 4.4.2 update and not rooted. He had complete control of her phone. Was writing me messages and kept opening pics of my 4 yr daughter. I diconnected the wifi and mobile data. He still had control of the phone. Then I factory reset it and he still was on it. Verizon is sending me a new phone and getting a new sims card. Is there a way from stoping this from happening?
I truly dont believe though that when you switched off network that someone can still connect. Anyways:
firstly, recap if the phone was ever left unattended, letting someone install something on it.
Dont do that, even if if it has a password on it, anyone not looking away when entering it on the street can see what the pincode/password is.
Apps not from play store, dont install. Ever.
Change all passwords on a safe medium (multiple antiviris vendors scanned) of wifi router, to anything, including recovery questions, make them different and non logical or affiliated to you.
Run virus scans on computer and or any medium that ever connected phone.
Then check apps/websites of mail and such for activity, likely activity at times you didnt use any of the services. Anyway facebook and such lets you close open sessions anywhere.
That should do the trick. And big tip dont get paranoid Just ponder how somehow got acces.
I find it hard to believe that someone could still control the device after a factory reset. Highly unlikely I would say.

1. I really doubt this happened.
2. After disconnecting wifi and mobile data, it would be impossible
3. Factory reset would definitely make it impossible
4. It's more likely that the touch screen is having phantom touches
I had issues with phantom touches on my Optimus G. Drove me batty. Some days it was impossible to use the phone, as the touches were all registering in the bottom half of the screen where the keyboard appears. So random letters would be inserted into words.
Turned out to be a driver issue with the custom kernels in some of the ROMs is using.
Factory reset and being more selective in the kernels I ran fixed the issue.
If it's still happening after a factory reset, then you have a defective touchscreen. Replace the phone under warranty.
Typos courtesy of my LG G2 (D803) running Mahdi-ROM.
I really have no reason to lie to you guys. The messages stopped after I disconnted the internet but the screen was still jumping around. That is why i figured he still had access.
I just received the new phone today. Should I go ahead and get a new sims card or I be ok with the old one?

its possible, if he were root and had something installed as system app.
also you can set stuff like tasker to autimaticaly turn network back on.
what did the messages say, cause if they were gybrisch then it seems like phantom touches.

I would, you could have the old encryption method on the sim card which would make it easier to root the card. But I am guessing what happened to your wife was something more like an AndroRAT exploit.
It could be possible seeing as all you need is a phone number to find your location by txt msg, and that can be done silently without you ever knowing.
Seems it's a built in part of the RADIO AT that providers can use, if you're on the inside and know how it works it'd be a doddle, but if the txt msgs were gibberish I'd go with the majority with faulty touchscreen/drivers and nothing to worry about
Bashing away at my HTC Desire C
Tell to the hacker to try to hack my phone instead, I don't care. I will shoot exclusively for him a pic of my arse as award if he manages to hack it and he can print it, or try to sell to the newspapers.
BTW, I'm not so anxious about apps not installed directly from Play Store. You can easily check or restrict the permissions of any app as root user. I never yet faced the problems.

I diconnected the wifi and mobile data. He still had control of the phone. Then I factory reset it and he still was on it. Verizon is sending me a new phone and getting a new sims card. Is there a way from stoping this from happening?

This is very likely version. Anything could be installed via remote then easily.

yeah, all you have to do is google reset password
This could be an issue with faulty digitizer.

Thank you everyone for your responses. He was asking me what I would like him to do for me. I had her open a new gmail account.

The phone was not rooted as per OP hence I find it unlikely.

ahhh the mistery what can it be, what can it be. Not sure if the typing was incoherent or not. That rules out possible digitizer issues or not.

I really have no reason to lie to you guys. The messages stopped after I disconnted the internet but the screen was still jumping around. That is why i figured he still had access.

The TOP bid would be == prank application.
Everything else would mean you're the targeted one (but how would the attacker have your new data?)
Maybe your gmail acc has some connections to another app -> look for permissions in your dashboard.
Please wake up from a dream <3
