Is there a way I can trick my phone into thinking it on wifi when it's not?
I want to be able to make skype calls when I'm on the road.

I don't know how to trick phone, but I am on verizon's skype, the one with white icon, not blue, well, it allows to make skype calls without Wi-Fi by default.
Oh, I was using the other one. Thank you very much sir.

Google skype hack for android. This is a version somebody moded so it works on either wifi and/or 3g, so you are always on. I have it and works like a charm.

Hi guys, i have recently started using gtalk to make calls on the pc. Of course there's no option to initiate calls naively in Android, so I was wondering if there was an app that could basically turn the n1 into a headset wiry a dial pad, so while connected via Bluetooth or WiFi, a call could be dialed on the n1 and gtalk on the pc connects the call, thus turning thephone into a glorified headset?
Any ideas?

How about waiting for Gingerbread with Gtalk voice and video built in (hopefully)?
That would be nice, but incase that's not a feature...

I think google should just come out with their own cell phone company already. Just call it G-Talk or something. That would be way rad.
edit: o nvrmind i was confused.

I've been thinking the same thing since gmail calling came out: they should put out something in the vein of Peek, but with WiFi and 3G calling in addition to Google Voice SMS. A pure Google Voice/Google Talk device. It would (should) be an affordable device (like, <$50 with a data contract, maybe around $100-$200 without) with unlimited mobile data and WiFi capabilities.

I use "fring" for gtalk voip calls.
Works great!
I'm looking for a solution to an uninterrupted tethering experience. I tether my x to play my 360 on live sometimes. Any text or phone call interrupts the signal, kicking me off.
Im currently using Wireless Tether, found in the market.
Is this the same for most tethering apps? Or does this fall into the ad-hoc discussion also?
Sorry for the noob question.

I use Wireless Tether for Root Users from the market and use it at school so my friends can use their iPhones (pathetic). I get plenty of texts and all sorts of stuff but it never kicks them off.

the data connection is paused while receiving or sending a text so there will be an interuption whenever one is sent or received. it is also paused while on phone call. only gsm phones can do data and voice/text simultaneously

only way you could accomplish that is if there was some way to temporarily block all calls and text. might be somethin out there that does it.

Thank you for the reply. Makes a lot of sense. Now, anyone know any apps that can do this?

You can't avoid the interruption because Verizon uses CDMA technology which one or the other can be used but not simultaneously. That's one thing I miss about Tmobile. : /

Something like "airplane mode" is what you are looking for. Not quite, since air plane mode would disables wifi (maybe you can toggle on? don't know).
Right. After more reading, cdma limits us a lot. Oh well.

Yeah, I don't think there would be a way around it... except...
If you only used google voice for all texting and calls, and then disabled google voice from routing to your phone/email/texts during the times you want uninterrupted tethering, then unless for some odd reason someone used your real number, you would be in the clear.
It could be a pain to switch the settings back and forth all the time, but I suppose by using tasker you could at least reduce some of the steps.
It's a crappy drawback of CDMA.
There is a program called Call Blocker which can block certain callers from getting through or in your case block all callers until reset-you can also block sms texts. Hope this helps

It will still cause a break in data, from my experience, though sometimes it's so quick that it doesn't make it an issue. At other times it will interrupt a download long enough to break it.
The main reason is that the call/text still gets through, but it intercepts it as quickly as it can. It doesn't actually block it completely, as there are no apps that can do that, for Android. That's something that's not feasible, that I'm aware of. Of course, if you could make that app exist, it would sell like crazy.
You can set your phone to not accept calls though Verizon so they when they call it takes straight to voicemail
Don't know about text tho

Hi all, I'm planning on switching over to the streak, and have searched for this but the "answers" I found aren't conclusive or dont really apply. Here's my background. I am currently grandfathered with ATT on an unlimited PDA personal data plan, with no voice. (i have a business cell for voice and ATT's network is faster and is perfect in the areas I visit, as well as my home which is the reason I opted not to get a voice plan since id rarely use it) So SOMETIMES I use skype (i have a skype out accout and skype #) to make voice calls if I leave my business cell at home/batt dies or whatever. My question is,
1: does the skype app work to make phone calls, (without frezing the phone). I do not need video chat, I just want voice calls to work. Also if it does work, what rom does it work on well? I not afraid of rooting and moding the device, im coming over from the Captivate which basically needed custom roms to function the way it SHOULD.
Q2: how well would you say gps and wifi tether work on whichever rom you recommend? Turn by turn nav work fluidly, or does it randomly throw you in the woods/ half a mile away like my Captivate?
Thanks in advance!

I've downloaded and installed Skype but haven't tried using it yet. With Rogers (Canada) official 2.2 ROM, Skype showed up in the Market, which it didn't when it was under 1.6
I have owned many android phones and i must say that the streak works great with skype. I've been talking for over an hour yesterday and i didn't have any issues (both 3g and wifi). 10+ for Streak
For gps navigation i use Copilot and works great also. My rom 2.2 - 318 EU
Doesn't work for me on 3G. Says not supported on 3G. Rather annoying.

Do a bit of googling and you'll find a "cracked" version of Skype that'll work over 3G.
Edit: It's here http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/78843-apks-unlocked-apps.html
Am surprised you cannot use Skype over 3G. The version I got from Market works over 3G ... Perhaps your carrier blocks it?

I should have specified, I am in the US on AT&T and they block it from being able to make voice calls over 3g. I tried the cracked version because thats what I used on my old Captivate and it didnt work on the streak. Depending on which cracked version you download, one doesn't even run (i believe the one intended for non-rooted/for people with preinstalled skype already on their phones) and the other package with is intended for rooted users: when I make a call it says call ended right away, then i try to make another call and skype tells me i have to hang up my other call before I make a new one. Kind of disapointing :/

in the us its limited to wifi only to appease to the carriers. or so they say, i think its because skype doesnt want to upgrade their systems to handle the traffic. att used to be able to block skype from using 3g on the iphone, and now the iphone is capable of calling and video chat on 3g while android users get no love. tbh, i dont care if i have to use wifi but i really do want video chat.
Try oovoo. It sounds lame but works beautifully both voice and video. Much much better than Skype on android, which never worked for me on any handset.
Skype on my streak works over 3G no issues... BT headset wont work though...

I just downloaded and installed Skype from the Market. I unlocked my Streak and am using a T-Mobile SIM (data only). When I tried to make a call to one of my Skype contacts I got the message 'In the U.S., you can only make Skype calls over Wi-Fi.'
P.S. My Streak is so far unrooted...I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
This has frustrated me to no end. Does anybody know if there is an app that will switch from HSPDA to 2g? Preferably one I can set to a schedule? The WiFi calling app is the only one that seems to do this flawlessly, however it requires a WiFi connection.
When I am at work I do not use my phone for anything except phone calls and my calendar, so I do not have any need for 4 or even 3g coverage... And my phone just drains battery trying to establish these connections.
I've tried using APNdroid but it just force closes my phone process.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm running elite sense 2.6 if that matters at all.

Hi, I know there are many Tablet SMS applications, but I want to know is there a way to make calls from your N7?
Preferably using my normal contract phone number, so people know its me.
Im sure I've seen it somewhere on the web on a video I saw, but havent a clue what it was called.
Im from the UK so no US only apps please.
Much appreciated.
You mean by Sim or by Wifi? If sim, impossible.

No I mean a little bit like TabletTalk, where it connects to your phone for example.
I don't mind whether its VoIP or whatever, I just want to be able to make a call from my Nexus7, that uses my phones number.
IVE SEEN IT on a Video which makes it even more annoying.

Tablet talk will allow you to answer calls as well you just need a bluetooth headset connected to your actual phone, it works in the same sense as the sms you phone is still the one connecting you are just controlling your phone with the N7

Thanks for your reply mate,
On the Video I saw it was using some sort of VoIP and used the N7's mic, no bluetooth mic needed.
I know that the connection goes through the phone which is fine, as how else would it get the number etc, but I don't want to buy a bluetooth headset.
It may have been GrooveIP but I think thats US only any UK alternatives?
THANKS !
EDIT - It was GrooveIP, what is the difference between GrooveIP and tablet talk?
As tablet talk is made by an XDA user and would love to support them rather than a company.
I've used groove IP on my phone and it does work in Canada but the sound can be glitchy. You have to sign in through Google to set it up, haven't tried it on nexus though.

It is possible to call from SIM if you have a N7 with 3G.
Some Internet providers have also an Internet+Voice option that you can enable. With a specific rom or application that can pop dialer I am pretty sure that you can make calls with your Internet/Voice SIM. I didn't activate the option but I did activate an Internet + Messages option and sending / receiving them work like a charm. I'm pretty sure with a Voice subscription you can do that too, but do keep in mind, if you have a SIM slot.

It is US only because of the laws that GrooveIP must follow. It is the same reason Google Voice is so hard to deal with, because Google provides it for free but has to dodge some laws here and there. Google may require payment after 2013 (they have secure 2013 as free, though).
