Flashing a gingerbread ROM

Hi, I've had my vibrant for quite a while it's been rooted ever since day 1. However I just got got Clockwork Mod working on stock 2.2 KA6. I'm now ready to flash a 2.3or 2.3.4 ROM and I wanted to know how do I go about it. I not sure if I can just flash over the stock 2.2 or not. I also hope I wouldn't have to resort to ODIN, as every one of my last several experiences with it was not good at all. Someone please help me out!
Someone please help I just want instructions how I can upgrade from stock KA6 to a 2.3 or 2.3.4 ROM. I would like to be able to do this without ODIN.
Hey bud, I'm kinda new on this board and not a super geek, but I might be able to point you in the right direction.
First of all, there's not an official Gingerbread release, so if you want it, you'll want to jump over the Development board (just go up a level) and find a ROM that is in 2.3. I know that Cyanogen is, for example, and there are a couple more.
What I did was to use Clockwork to do a backup (called a nandroid backup) and then I downloaded Cyanogen and used Clockwork to flash it. Quite simple and it sounds like you're all set up and ready to go.
Be advised that on (I think all) the 2.3 builds, you will have to give up on GPS. I had Cyanogen briefly just so I could check out streaming Netflix, but I had a few glitchy things like Swype to fix and decided just to go back to my Bionix ROM.
Hope that helps! Use the Thanks button if it did.
You can now get GPS with GB roms. You can even get wifi calling. Follow the instructions for the rom you want. CM7 is very easy to install.

Its very simple. Since you have CWM (clockwork mod) now installed its easy peasy.
What you want to do is find a rom... personallt im using the nightly builds of CM7... You can find it by going to the android development section of our phone...
Find the rom then download the .zip file and place it somewhere on your internal sd card. Dont put it on your external sd.
Then go ahead and reboot into cwm and clear ur data/cache. After that go ahead and install zip, choose zip file from its location, then install.
Once installed, reboot and viola!
Most of all read the installation insrructions listed as well so you dont screw up. Worst comes to worst and your not sure then stop what your doing and ask here!!
Good luck my friend

Sweet! Really? Last time I put Cyanogen on my GPS was a no go. That was less than 2 weeks ago, but I will look into it again.

Custom Roms for ICS

Hello
I am considering installing a custom rom for ICS. I notice that some are in RC stages. I have a few questions:
What custom rom is the best for ICS?
Can you update the rom version without needing to reflash?
Thanks

Allways an update version needs to be flashed, but if you are on ICS you normally are not needed to make a factory reset. Only flash the update and reboot.
Nevertheless it is usefull to safe your data. CWM backup and Titanium Backup I would advice.
You should probably post in Q&A for this stuff.
There are two prominent versions at the mo,
1 - Onecosmics ICS RC 2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223)
2 - Teamhacksungs ICS ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593)
There are a few more but these are probably your best place to start.
OneCosmics version is based on stock ICS, Teamhacksungs is more of a CM7/ICS build, so not totally stock.
Both work well, but neither are perfect yet. Onecosmics is goodin my eye as i like stock. Keep it simple and hopefully little will break....
You should also read the android development page for i9000, this will show you all you need and you can read what you like!
Getting a 'Custom Rom' will be rare at this point as stock still isn't 100% to work off.
You can install both via CWM i believe. Just ensure you go from stock and backup via Nandroid or similar.
Going back to GB, you can just flash via ODIN.

No flashing is through recovery mode (cwm) . All instructions are posted in teamhacksung ics first post.

I cant see anything about flashing from a stock rom. I need a "from scratch" guide.
I myself would go for onescomics, but i just like stock android over CM7

Basically -
you want ICS to be installed over a clean firmware install to avoid potential problems. i.e. Stock firmware (stock with root is fine by the way!) with a factory reset & cache wipe from recovery mode. THEN install ICS via CWM.
If you are on stock GB already, then just do a factory reset & Cache wipe and go from there with instructions on Onecosmics thread mentioned above etc.
Make sure you know what you're doing and backup your efs etc.
That help?

How do you install cwm?

Cripes, you should do some forum reading, i'm worries you don't know enough to be doing this to your phone (sorry, i just don't want you to do something you're not sure about...)
CWM is generally installed when you root your phone, easiest method is with Chainfire's Root (i think SuperOneClick is also working again now, but i can't guarantee it'll work on JVU).
CF-Root (Chainfire's Root) look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Make sure you use root for JVU, and follow instructions, flash with ODIN.
This will install CWM and superuser. You can do a backup in CWM. Please read up on how it works, there are plenty of guides out there. for EFS backup, read about, i'd advise it, just in case. With root, there are programs you can download from market to do it, or Nandroid, if you know how that works.
NB: ROOTING VOIDS YOUR WARANTEE
kapeesh?
whatever you do, make sure you know what you're doing before flashing anything.
and read up on CWM and recovery mode. There be dragons in there....
Flake x
(p.s. remember to thank all the useful people yeh? )
Be careful have a good read up before you decide to flash. Make sure you read up on how to un brick your phone just in case.

Yup. Cf-root is available for JVU.

Done, had a scare at first.
When i flashed from cm7 to ics it didnt recognise my iemi or get a signal.
I Odin'd back to JVU and flashed the kernal then went straight to ICS and its working fine.
Yeah, I got the generic imei on flashing cm7, don't know why, as I'd used cm7 before with no issues. Fortunately had a backup. Bit scary though.

New to Rooting

Hello, I've had my TF101 for a while now and would like to root it. But I have some concerns and questions. I hope you guys can answer them. First, how do I root it; can I use Super One Click? Also, if I root it and for some reason need to unroot, is there a way to do so without deleting anything or changing the firmware. I Don't want to deal with the pain of re-installing things and transferring photos etc. Second, if I install Clockwork can I return back to the stock recovery and if so how do I do it. Third, do I need to unlock the bootloader for installing CM9. If so how do I do it. Finally, is CWM Touch any good.
Use ViperMod to root and unroot. If on ICS use option 1. If on HC use option 3.
Look for the Epic Noob Guide for how to get back to stock recovery.
Bootloader is locked. Just need root and customer recovery and read CM9 thread.
Sorry not more extensive answers but I am mobile, so....
Well if I need to return the recovery to stock, do I lose everything?

As other user said read then reread then read again Noob guide to rooting
Ok I figured it out. Is it it better to manually install CWM or let Rom Manager do it? Also anybody got opinions on CWM Touch?

No , you can mod build.prop and you can install the apk but you won't get it to work. It is even present in the framework but again, no it won't work.
That needs to be done in the building process of the rom. One more reason to go custom
Ask MD , it is even a pain to get it working on custom rom. It all got to do with signing the correct apk's before you build the rom.
So don't waist your time or mess up your system it is not going to happen.

Hi everyone!! Im new to this forum so bare with with me. I recently bought an acer iconia A500 4.0.3 ics (leak). I rooted it with blackthunde, but then I dident like the root sooo I found a utube video that said " unroot all android devices universal", i did what they said, which was" to remove the su files and the remove superuser and then boot" however; superuser did not remove from my devic. I used the root checker to c if it worked and i guess it did because now it saids "not rooted" sooo my question is: how do i get my tablet back to the state when I first bought it? or can i remove the superuser manually? but instead of it saying uninstall it saids "remove all updates". i dont know what to do, please can someone explain how to get it to brandnew and leave no trace of root..... thank you...
First this should be a question by itself.
But I will try and help you out bud.
To get to stock you must find a ROM that is stock then flash it.
If you want absolute stock that is beyond me as I've never looked into it in ics
What ROM are you on now? if you are just rooted just factory data reset and you should be happy where it is at.
If you are trying to sell it let me know!. as any another reason to go to stock I don't know why you would..
I don't understand your post really..

Well, probably because superuser apk was placed in the /system/app folder and you don't have /system rw permissions anymore.. Can't remove it unless you're rooted with /system RW access.
If you want it really back to stock condition, grab one of the update ICS files from the Dev section, decrypt it, pull the update.zip from it. Copy the update.zip to your ext SD, and boot holding Vol+ and PWR. Should install the update.
Note there are 2 update ICS files, so of one doesn't work, try the other. This will put a stock ICS back on your tab.
If it goes well that is

Video tutorial to Root N7000(ICS/GB), use root explorer

1.This is guide How to root galaxy Note (N7000) running on ICS (4.0.3/4.0.4) -Dedicate to Newbies
THIS METHOD IS SEEMS RISKY, AS CWM.ZIP CONTAINS BAD STRING AND CAN DAMAGE DEVICE.

3. How to copy/delete/edit/change permission with Root explorer
Since I'm a newbie at this stuff, just wanted to ask if rooting my Note would erase the data stored in my phone memory?
Also, should i make a backup of all the data incase anything goes bad??
P.S - thanks for the tutorial..
Rooting, doesn't erase anything.
But yes it is always advisable to keep backup of your important data, though you may have limited option to backup on unrooted device. some suggestion
Contact - inbuilt import/export or google sync
Msgs - use SMS restore backup appl
Applications - Non root version of My backup application. though you can backup only app not data of appl like game level, credential etc.
Haha
Classic Music Dr...
Thanks for the suggestions.
One last query. Is it necessary to flash another ROM after rooting the phone? If so, could you please suggest me an easy to use ROM and a tutorial on how to flash it would be really helpful!
P.S - I apologize for being such a newbie but this is the first Android phone I'm using!

In short - No.
No need to flash another ROM once rooted although it's preference. You can happily root your stock ROM and maintain root access which will allow you greater control and of course the ability to run Root only apps.
If you wanted to try out other ROM's, check out the development section, Most ROM's have a video or step by step walkthrough on how to install..
No need to apologise, and if you've not used it already - here's a great thread that should answer a lot of your questions;

Flash custom rom
Hi,
I followed the steps given in the video and was able to root successfully.
Now, Can i directly flash the custom ROMs (for eg. ICS Stunner 1.6.26 which is an ICS ROM) through CWM?
I read a warning that said flashing custom ROMs on ICS kernels can lead to a hard brick and that we need to flash a safe kernel like Abyss Kernel.
Here is a screenshot of my About Phone.
