Hi,
Has anyone been able to do usb tethering in CM7 on Windows xp? I am getting issue of unknown drivers. I have htc sync (latest) installed. Not sure where else can I find the drivers.
Anyone please.
Usb tethering worked fine for me on stock eclair rom. Couldn't get it working on cm :-(

Windows XP users: For details on setting up USB tethering on Windows XP, see http://www.android.com/tether
And if you go there you can find the tetherxp.inf file
Windows XP contains the drivers you need to take advantage of USB tethering, but you must install a configuration file before connecting your phone to your Windows XP computer, to instruct Windows XP how to configure itself to use those drivers.
Download the following configuration file (tetherxp.inf) to your Windows XP computer. Typically, you can right click on the link and choose "Save As". (If your browser appends .html to the file name, you will need to edit the name to remove the .html extension.)
Use the USB cable that came with your phone to connect your phone to your computer.
On the Android phone, press Home, press Menu, and touch Settings to open the Settings application.
Touch Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
Check USB tethering.
When Windows XP’s New Hardware Wizard opens, select No, not at this time and click Next.
Select Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
Click Browse to browse to the directory where you installed the configuration file you downloaded in Step 1 and click Next. Windows XP uses the configuration file to configure itself to support USB tethering with the Android phone.
When Windows XP finishes installing the software for Android USB Ethernet/RNDIS, click Finish.
You can now use the new Windows XP local area network connection provided by your phone via USB tethering. For more information about configuring networks in Windows XP, see the documentation that comes with Windows.

Thank You!
It worked for me on GingerVillain (can't remember which one, but i think 2.3c) so I didn't think it was a general android issue. Thanks again I'll try it out!

Thanks a lot man. This solution worked flawlessly.
Thank A lot
It Worked Fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
XP does not even register USB Tether mode.
Storage mode works fine, so USB is being detected.
I restored the system files back to the original to no avail.
How do I get the system to register?

USB tether in WinXP
Here's what I learned trying to USB tether my HTC Incredible with CM7 and my netbook with WinXP. WindowsXP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Linux, and Apple all have the USB android RNDIS drivers needed for USB tethering. However, WinXP is not ready to go out of the box and needs a configuration file, teatherxp.inf, to configure WinXP to install these drivers. When the Android USB drivers are installed they are found under Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Network Adaptors > Android USB Ethernet/RNDIS.
Follow the instructions on http://support.google.com/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=182134 and it shows you how to install the drivers. This works fine and dandy and WinXP will try to install the Android USB drivers when you start USB tethering according to the directions as long as your phone is contained in the configuration file on this web site.*
If you phone is not in the inf file it will not recognize the inf file. If this is the case, you need to modify the inf file to include your phone. Do not modify the tetherxp.inf file in the Google link. Use the XDA Developers tetherxp.inf from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419159 as it is configured in a more readable and understandable way and perhaps more timely. This tetherxp.inf is configured for only some models of Google Nexus, HTC, and Motorlola and did not work with my HTC Incredible.
Open tetherxp.inf in a text editor and you will find the phones are listed twice, both under [AndroidDevices] and [AndroidDevices.NT.5.1]. You can add your own phone but obviously the syntax has to be exactly correct and you need to find the information to include. If you start USB tethering and you were not able to install the drivers then go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and you will find Other Devices > RNDIS with a yellow question mark. Right click and go to properties > details > device instance ID and you will find the information that needs to go in the file. My Incredible had USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C03\HT05GHJ09289. You don't use the final slash and following text which is he USB ID of the phone. It is no coincidence how similar the information on the Incredible is to the other HTC phones.
At the end of [AndroidDevices] paste the following 2 lines:
; HTC Incredible without adb
%AndroidDevice% = RNDIS, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C03
At the end of [AndroidDevices.NT.5.1] paste the following two lines:
; HTC Incredible without adb
%AndroidDevice% = RNDIS.NT.5.1, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C03
Now save the file and go back to Other Devices > RNDIS and update the driver by pointing to your now updated tetherxp.inf file and the drivers will be installed and your phone will have USB tether on WinXP. If you follow these general principles you should be able to put any phone into tetherxp.inf.
Hope this is helpful to someone. It took me awhile to figure it out. BTW, when you are using USB tether on WinXp and you are done using it, don't uncheck the USB tether box in the Android settings, just unplug it. Otherwise something hangs and you will have trouble starting it up again and your computer can't complete the shutdown.
The solution doesn't work.
I have HTC Desire GSM with CM7.1.0 (stable) and when I try to connect device to pc (win xp sp3 32-bit), OS can't install any driver (I've tried to install google usb drivers, htc sync driver and google tether drivers)
Disabling USB Debug, drivers are correctly installed... but I don't like this solution (I prefer this option enabled)

I put this together using the generic drivers available at Microsoft. Couldn't find a driver elsewhere.

I tested it with my 8525 and Windows XP. Works fine except the Internet Sharing application on the 8525 will not disconnect after a USB connection is made. Don't think this is an issue with the driver. Please test and post any comments here.

hello,
i've got an error code 10 when i've install XDA driver on XP SP2.
using a diamond ROM official FR from provider SFR.
Active sync must be install for working ?
thanks
sry to bring this dead post back alive, but... what does that do? i tried to install it by right clicking the .inf file and choosing install, but it shows up question mark in device manager.
This still works great. I have an HTC Incredible and Vista x86.
When it asks you to find a driver, select that you have a disk and point it to the .inf
Had a search and found 1 or 2 things but they never worked for me. Anyway I have complied this driver for Windows XP so all you need to do is add it to your Internal Storage, plug it in to your computer copy it to your PC, then set your phone to internet sharing. When it moans that it dosn't know where the driver is, point it to them and it should work.
I just tested it on an XP machine and it worked so hopefully it will work for you.
If there is already a solution for this please let em know.

thanks... vista and windows 7 has the drivers inbuilt but not for windows xp..
Driver works on Magic 32A with SuperD 1.5.1, WinXP SP2.
Thank you very, very much

Worked beautifully for me!
Worked great for me!

I cannot get these drivers to work. I'm using an xp machine and every time I turn on the usb tethering, it automatically installs drivers identified as "HTC remote ndis remote device" and it has a big yellow ! next to it. I tried pointing at your folder for the device wizard and it says it couldn't locate better drivers to install. What am I missing here?
I have the same issue with you, waiting for the solution.

Try tell it that you will select the driver manually. Then click the "Have Disk" button and point to the inf of this driver. That should install it regardless of what Device Manager thinks is the best drriver.
Been having trouble getting wired tether to work also. In device manager I had a yellow "!" sign on USB composite device, installed the driver from this thread and the caution sign disappeared - still no tethering though
I suppose I'll just have to make do with wireless tether.
when I point that file as the driver it tells me it isnt for that device.
Connect your phone, then when it says it has found new hardware but cant install it, go to the device manager, double click the and click reinstall driver.
Point the folder to where ever you saved the driver too and it should install.

Windows 2000.....is this possible?
Thanks you! Something that finally works!
I have a question. My PC at work still has its normal LAN connection through a network card. Now I have this second connection through my G1. If I make a web request with Firefox, which connection will it use? Do I have to disable the LAN connection to guarantee that it uses the G1? Or is there someway to make Windows default to the G1 if it's attached, and use the LAN otherwise?
Works for USB tethering using Android 2.2 (Froyo) and Windows XP
Thanks for the driver. FYI I was able to use it with Android 2.2's built-in USB tethering and Windows XP SP3.
Unrooted Nexus One with stock Android 2.2 (Froyo)
this worked for me, thanks!

"all you need to do is add it to your Internal Storage" The file you posted is to get the driver on your computer working, right? Am I copying ANY file at all to the phone or?
Ive tried searching now for about 2 hours for a fix.
Ive just installed windows 7 x64 pro and i can not get it to work with my HD. It will not recognize it at all. Ive had various problems, always seems different.
Ive tried turning off the enable fast data. This changed the problem, but didnt fix it.
At the moment, i have that enabled and the problem from what i can tell is, in device manager Microsoft Windows Remote Adapter is not working.
If i disable fast data, i get a connecting to host message on my HD screen and nothing else really happens.
Ive tried updating the USB drivers, but that will not work, something to do with unsigned drivers.
Under mobile devices in device manager i get PocketPC USB Sync instead of the HTC usb Sync thing.
Is there a solution for this please?
With me it worked on windows 7x64 straight out of the box. I suggest re-installing win 7.
I'd have to agree, using Windows x64 Professional here and both my Touch HD and my partners work fine (I had to allow Windows to download an updated version of Windows Mobile Device Center first though).
I do not suggest reinstalling Win 7. Geez. Sorry, but that's using an axe to trim a toenail.
Try downloading and reinstall the x64 version of Windows Mobile Device Center. Make sure you get version 6.1. Do not download any driver updates meant for Vista - you don't need them. But this main file will be marked Vista - it includes you too.
Next, it's possible that when you first plugged in the blackstone, a driver install got canceled or didn't happen right. Use your hardware manager and look for any new generic devices or HID devices. You can try deleting the hardware from the list and asking device manager to look again.
MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER.
Good luck.
Installed windows 7 last week.... i mainly use this pc at home and at work i use XP.
Anyway just connected it now to my notebook and after some driver downloads from windows the phone works fine...
make sure u download the latest mobile device center.
I had the same with my Topaz and windows 7. The fix was to disable the windows firewall while syncing.
This solved my sync problems with Windows 7 ultimate x64
Open notepad
write the text : net localgroup Administrators LocalService /add
save the file as e.g. HTC.bat somewhere on your hard drive where you can find it
Locate with Windows Explorer the .Bat file you just edited
Rightclick on the bat fil
select "run as administrator"
restart your computer. Your HTCH Touch HD should connect without problems
Hi,
It seems that I've searched everywhere and tried everything, but I'm unable to get USB tethering to work.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my understanding of how it should work between Windows 7 64bit and Typhoon's CM7 Android running on the HTC HD2:
Phone Side:
Wired tethering is already available as an option, so simply enable USB tethering by ticking Settings -> Wireless and network settings -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> USB tethering
Windows Side:
Install the correct ADB driver for the HTC HD2. Does this create a new network adapter? I'm assuming a internet connection starts automatically as soon as tethering is enabled on the phone (and this runs via the network adapter)
When I connect the phone via USB, windows is unable to automatically find a driver. Apparently windows already comes prepackaged with a RDNIS driver, but this doesn't seem to work. The phone shows up in device manager under "Other devices" and is listed as "ADB" with a yellow exclamation mark. Where do I find the correct driver to use, and what happens after I've installed the driver. Is it true that the process is automatic, or do I need to right click on the installed adapter and click connect?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
Regards,
XA83

Hey. I haven't been able to get native USB teathering to work. U can use a app to make it work that seems to be the only way as of now. If you search my posts I posted the apk file.

In the past I've had to search on google for the ADB driver but cannot remember where i found it since I couldnt find it again but a friend just brang their desire hd over and windows 7 found the driver straight away, do u know anyone who would borrow u their android device?
dunno if this helps
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Thanks for the replies.
I've already installed the Google USB driver (from the developer site listed above). The phone shows up and the ADB driver is installed.
I've also tried installing the wired tethering apk from google apps. It is currently at version 1.4.
HOWEVER, I still don't understand how this is supposed to work as the ADB driver is not listed under networking devices. Surely you need a network driver to able to establish a connection. What am I not understanding?
Regards,
XA83
Hey, just built a new PC for a friend and tried sharing my internet connection using easytether which didnt work because the pc didnt have the correct adb driver. My friend then installed HTC Sync (for her Desire HD) and windows found an adb driver in there. Now the native tethering & easytether on my phone works.
Now I'm not too sure if htc sync has ANYTHING to do with this, or if the driver was downloaded from her desire hd (usb was plugged in already) but I guess you could try downloading htc sync and see what happens.

This is part "bump" and part assistance. You can at least get the Nexus 7 connected via ADB using these steps:
enable USB debugging
install the Android SDK (from Android's developer site)
from the SDK manager install the latest version of the USB driver too.
Make sure your Nexus 7 is hooked up.
Go into your device manager (Start > Control Panel > Device Manager)
navigate to the right Nexus device (not MTP in this case),
right click it,
click Update Device Drivers.
Choose your own driver manually.
When asked for a folder, navigate to C:\[your username]\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver
make sure searching in folders is checked
...that should at least get the ADB driver running. From there you can PUSH or PULL files or open the SHELL, but I don't know of a client-side file manager that makes those things easy yet. This is just one step of many, I bet...
2 things
Have you the latest win media player installed on PC? If not, update it.
Is n7 USB debugging on? If so, turn it off.
That should allow MTP to begin. If not, try the previous post

If your using a N or KN version of Windows 7, you can't use MTP. N and KN versions of Windows have media foundation and other media-specific features stripped from it; and MTP itself does not work.
If you are on such an OS, then this media pack may help:

ADB works without a problem.. it is just hte MTP that wont show up
I have the same issue. If I select PTP, the camera shows. Once I switch back to MTP, it goes away and no disks are displayed. In Device Manager I see Android Phone, I installed Google drivers and adb works. I have a Google Nexus also and is OK.
You're not alone, Sir.

Anyone who found a fix for this? Couldn't get it to work on W7, on Windows 8 still no MTP. I can use it for debugging with the ADB, but everything I tried failed. Now I'm using AirDroid, but this option is the way slower.

Here's the official documentation from Google for enabling this protocol.
"Transfer files through USB" (Google this** and click the link by support.google.com)
Relevant Info:
On your device, make sure that the USB computer connection is set to “Media device (MTP).”
Go to Settings > Device > Storage. Then open Menu > USB computer connection.
MTP should be selected by default, but you may have to uncheck MTP, check and uncheck Camera (PTP), and then recheck MTP.
