i was just wondering how hard is it to port gingerbread to a phone or the droid 2
Good question but the answer is... a little complicated. I tried to figure this out but unfortunately there are not really any guides or even explanations of where to begin.
I'm convinced you have to be a relatively skilled hacker, because the documentation just does not seem to be there.
If anybody knows otherwise I would be glad to know.
At this point its relatively impossible due to the locked bootloader, if we cant get past it the only thing we can do is customize the stock rom

wow that sucks..if there was a guide to start off i would give it a try

Alright so there was the story about that dreaded efuse but I don't think its a piece of hardware. Im figurin its a program somewhere because if it was hardware then there'd be a thread on how to take it out. Im guessin the locked bootloader has something to do with it as well
It's hardware. It's not removable to my knowledge.

I don't see how hardware could be the issue. A program has to start it and what im thinkin is if the program is deleted or changed in some way then bricking would be gone. The only thing is where is that file? Hopefully someone can find it

It could be firmware
So it'd still be files. If you could access that file and change it then the possibility of a nand unlock is there and full custom roms
I don't think you understand how this works... It's not as easy as you would think, or someone would have already done it. There's a lot of talent out there working on the DX, and they're doing everything they can.
It is hardware, for sure, and it's (again) not as easy as popping it out. I think it's actually a part of the processor...
I get what you're saying. But in order for that piece of hardware to work the program has to enable it. And as soon as someone can unlock the os files that little part can be altered. Of course no one knows how moto has done it so its all just ideas

From what I know is like flashed BIOS. The only downside is that there's no know way to access it. It could even be a little old school and burned like an eprom chip.

I don't know much about root with the mytouch 4g Or any phone for that matter A
except that it is considered very very good However it may or may not want a warranty that is where I hear different issues
Could someone clarify the two things first what are the exact benefits I get out of it. would it take me back to what I had on my nexus --basic android. nd
Secondly would it void my warranty? If so is there a way of getting back to the original factory settings where they would not know?
Lastly there is no way I would be able to do this is there anyway of getting anyone else to do it in person or over the computer By giving me instructions I know there is a list of instructions but I was thinking more along the lines of seeing or speaking to someone
I would pay handsomely for this
Thank you and this was typed and sent using Dragon dictation so forgive me for any misspellings or punctuation I correct is almost all spelling and punctuation till the end

1 - Simply rooting the phone would not give you the same setup that you had on your Nexus One, but it would allow you to get there. By rooting the phone, you are getting complete access to every partition on that phone and THAT is what allows changes to be made to the kernel and operating systems (aka ROMs). Unless you are a developer and know how to create your own ROM, you'd have to wait until one is created for us. Right now I believe there is one called Ice or something to that extent. You can check the Development section for that.
2 - Rooting technically does void your warranty, however there are way to get back to the original stock ROM/settings. There are threads in the Development section as well. As with anything that is in unfamiliar territory, take care and precaution when modifying your phone...especially if you use it on a daily basis and aren't sure of the exact steps to take.
Hopefully this was somewhat useful. Good luck!
Allen, and everyone, thank you
Yes, it does help
You say I can wait for one, or do my own, or use one by ??Ice.
Is that the one that was on the net, namely one like this, created by Scotty also?
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/11/11/root-mytouch-4g-install-custom-recovery/
1. Is that safe
2. Is the "flash" the thing that can get you back to factory settings
3. As far as the ? about getting anyone to take baby steps with you in doing this OR somewhere to take the phone to do it, has anyone heard of this.
Lastly, Allen
did you know anything about the phone locking up after a break, when using WiFi (EDIT: Oops thought I mentioned this in the post above. fwiw, anyone know why I can use wifi over the net quite well, using my browser (not to confuse using the wifi calling app, as one gent thought I meant. But then after a brief break, it locks up. even if I switch back to hspa. I have to restart. any ideas?)
Again, Thanks Allen, and all
If the only thing you know about rooting is "its very very good" then my suggestion would be to not do it just to do it.... do your research first, learn the basics and what its all about, yes there are pro's but theres con's. A simple mistake could leave you with a very expensive paper weight. All I'm saying is there's no need to jump in to it. root was around far before android and wont disappear over night. The only thing that I can't stress enough is research research research.

For a beginner developing your own rom would be extremely difficult/almost impossible... no other roms have been released yet except for the ice one but that is the exact same thing as what you have now minus the stock apps
One problem with using other peoples roms is if you can't read the code you really don't know what your putting on your phone... with XDA a decent amount of us can read code and would say something if we found it malicious but what if noone took the time on that specific rom? unless you can read it that just brings me back to you really never know
So I guess that answers your is it safe question... its safe if you know what your doing... and don't get me wrong I'm not tryin to make it sound scary it'll be a 1 in a million shot to find a malicious file on xda but it could happen
2 flash an equal to install ... as installing a rom flashing a rom
3 no idea what you mean

thanks. No, that just about answers it. very well, I might add. I will wait
what i meant, is if there is one that comes out, might there be someone who will walk you thru it, i.e for a newbie either thru chat, phone, or somewhere to take your phone to get it flashed with the new rom
oh ok i see, you would probably not want someone to do it for you because youll need to do it more than once... if someone walks you through it at least you learn how to do it and you'll be able to do it next time (and trust me theres always a next time) if your interested in doing it i pm'd you my aim name and id help you out with it... its really quite simply when its broken down... but like i said before id do some more research on it first and come up with some reason you personally need root access because its importance to other people may not mean anything to you n vice versa.
I am the current owner of a Fascinate, rooted/romed ect, and I'm planning on getting the girl a Droid X tomorrow. Been cruising this section for a few days now lurking, and I'm still utterly blown away by the seemingly endless Rom choices. We want to root her new phone and I'd love to try and keep it as stock as possible. Looking for wireless tethering and some sort of Pepto Pink theme. I read something about some sort of boot loader, no clue what that is, but seems like something I need to look into.
I'm very familiar with Rom Manager, and flashing custom roms on my Fascinate, but the lack of Dev. on the SGS makes for very clear easy choices on what roms/kernels to flash. I'm not asking for a spoon feeding, just possibly some basic information on what to research and maybe some links of information to read up on.
Thanks in advance!
Aside from rooting... you want to look into the app droid x bootstrapper by koush google it or download it from the market... after that then decide what rom you want to use... don't worry about kernels we can't flash custom kernels cuz of the locked bootloader (i think)....there are guides all over this forum...
Aside from your keeping it stock as possible.... there are roms that keep some blur aspects and others that are more aosp... i personally use apex...

This has probably been asked before, but i cant seem to put together the right string of words to get an answer when I search/ I am not a noob but not an expert so bare with me. Is it possible to put ROMS from other phones on the vibrant? It seems like they are all android that you could but i know nothing of the differences. I am currently on my second TOXIC ROM and i have been able to do all the tweaks and have been able to add scripts and kernals and modems without help. Thanks to all of those who can give me an answer!
No you can't

Im no expert either but maybe this will somewhat help. You cant just flash roms from other phones due to several factors that im not 100% sure of but an experienced dev can port roms from other devices to work on the vibrant like the many i9000 roms we have. I havent seen anything other than roms being ported from devices other than the galaxy line tho.
thanks kon that is the answer i was looking for
No problem glad i could be of assistance

I have been searching on how to port ROMs from one device over to another but i have not yielded many results and most of the info i came across
seems a little hard to follow. I was looking at a sense 4.0 ROM for the Desire HD and wanted to port it over to our HD2 to test out its function or lack
of function. The issue i'm running into is i've not came across any (device specific) information on how to port over the ROM i'm looking at. Here is the
ROM i'm looking to port. This would be my first try at this so i'm not sure how successful i'll be but i definitely wish to give it a go.
I've already looked at all four suggested threads before opening this thread and did a search on Google and XDA. I also looked on several other
forums to which i have not seen any useful info on porting for the HD2. Any info or links to a how to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It is not easy. It takes lots of work. But I will give you the theory. At least to the best of my knowledge.
1) Find rom you want to port..
2) Find similar rom that already works for your phone (Android 2.3.7 or 4.0.3 etc etc..)
3) Break down both roms
4) Remove drivers from the rom you are porting
5) Copy drivers from working rom to porting rom
6) Rewrite build.prop if the driver names are different
7) Repack and test..
Hope that helps some!!
great i also want to do it
I'm going to give it a go. I doubt i will release it on the forums just because i wouldn't be able to keep up with fixing bugs and stuff like that. I would try it out and see how it runs, maybe if it runs without to much headache i might but i think i'm getting way ahead of myself. first thing is to just read and re-read intill i think i have everything down. Then i'll begin the hard parts.
No offense, but it isn't easy. I hope you will be able to make a port. But in my opinion if I were trying to port something and even got it to boot I'd be feeling pretty great about myself.. lol
If it boots you're doing good!

No offense taken. I know its not going to be easy by any means but I still would like to give it a go. Considering the Desire is pretty close to the HD2 is the only reason why I'm even trying it out. Luckily I have the premium warranty protection to cover lost, stolen and water damage phones, or in this case a software mess up if something goes wrong.
