Root sprint hero? Bought it and it came with 2.1 installed -,-

So yeah, I bought my hero yesterday and the guys at the sprint store spent around 30mins with it(I guess they were giving it the update, but they never asked me if I wanted it)
so the question is, how do I go about rooting it now? all the tuts I've seen are for 1.5

meh I feel like fighting sprint over it since they didn't even tell me what they did, but asking for a phone swap over an update sounds like a douche costumer
I've seen people asking for an exchange over less than that. Here is a good one, a customer who just upgraded his phone came back and demanded an exchange because the box had a weird mark on the button of it that was smaller than a grain of rice and it did not affect his phone or the functions of the phone at all.
I miss the days when all we had was basic calling phones
But yeah I'm new to the hero (coming from the t-mo G1) 2.1 is much more smooth along with the sense UI. and here I am wondering when(if) we are getting 2.2 or root access on 2.1 in order to get a 2.2 rom.
waiting on the devs , root access would be great(wifi tether!)

Woot! Got 1.5 back after new 2.1 ruu

So i Just got my replacement HTC Hero from Sprint. IT HAS 1.5 !!!!
So here is what you need to do if you want to have 1.5 back:
1) cal sprint tech support and complin about the phone not working right, It gets to hot while making calls or using it at all * this one is important *, the battery only last 2 1\2 to 3 hours after full charge, data never connect correctly and you have to refresh it by going into and then out of airplane mode, and what ever else you can think of or are really having a problem with.
2) tell them your phone worked fine until the new 2.1 update released on sprint's website May 19th 2010, and you followed every instruction they gave
3) DEMAND !! ( I'm not usually like this, but it was the only way they would do it ) Demand a new htc hero be sent to you, and tell them to request in the notes that it has 1.5
**** IMPORTANT *****
The replacement phone comes from asurion, your insurance provider. They are currently working on flashing all HEROs with 2.1, so if you want 1.5, DO THIS TODAY !!!!
4) once you get the new one, make sure you reflash the 2.1 RUU on the old phone as to wipe everything and remove traces of customization * as they look for these and can charge you $75* Then call sprint and activate the replacement.
5) **** MOST IMPORTANT STEP ******
MAKE SURE YOU MAIL THIS BACK WITHIN 15 DAYS, as sprint will charge you a $500 NON REFUNDABLE Charge to your account !!!!!
Also once you get the new phone you can update the firmware to the
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test Firmware, as it has a built in ROOT ACCESS. just follow steps at: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/9542-how-repair-your-bootloader-after-using-2-1-ruu.html to get root access.
That's it I hope this helps !
Now I am going to enjoy custom ROMs again !
Moved your post to a new thread under general as it was not relevant to DamageControl rom development.

Actually u just got lucky. Asurion does not know what theyre shipping wether its new, used and what software it runs.
woot woot i was still in the 30 days from purchasing phone so i went to the store and got a new phone with 1.5 on it since i pushed 2.1 before i researched rooting, now lets see if I can get this one rooted, any really easy ways?
thats what i did as well, use fresh kitchen took me all of about 30 seconds to root.... then i went and updated the recovery to 1.5.6 and installed damagecontrols 2.08.1 rom and so far i like it, its like having a stock 2.1 rom but with root access and a tad bit more features.

FlashRec.apk, or Fresh Kitchen. TheUnlockr.com has a tutorial how to root using flashrec.

HTC Hero 2.1 t-mobile GSM Update ota

Hi, just wondering if anyone can please help me.
Has the t-mobile released the 2.1 update for their G2 Gsm HTC Hero?
Mine is unrooted, and still on 1.5, getting a little frustrated waiting now. Im using the Handset in the u.s with a none t-mobile sim. Will this make a difference? Theres no che l for software update in the menu of the tmobile editions. Thanks

You're posting in the Android Development forum! We're all into rooting our phones and flashing custom roms here!
If you'd like to root your phone and flash 2.1 (or 2.2 now!), then do a bit of reading here and over at theunlockr.com on rooting the HTC Hero. Then pick your ROM and flash away.
If, however, you're looking to stay on a stock ROM, your best best would be to check the T-Mobile discussion forum. It's probably full of people crying out for the T-Mobile branded update, like they were at the tail end of 2009.

if you're stuck on stock 1.5, try this it worked for my mate:
- Settings > time and date
- Untick the automatic time setting
- Change the data forward a year
- You should recieve a pop up after a couple of seconds...

Hi,
I guess they did not yet upgrade. The main link I see is:
http://www.t-mobile.nl/persoonlijk/..._UK_2.73.110.26_R_release_signed_NoDriver.zip
Still the 1.5 For NL anyhow.
Bunt, a few people have mentioned that clock forward method, tried it but no luck. Do u think it maybe because i dont have a t-mobile sim in it wont work?
I cant root my handset as im travelling for a few months and have no access to a p.c without the admin restrictions etc :-(
thanks a lot for your help though.
Really appreciated

A friend of mine received the OTA on his last night. However my other friend hasent received this yet, is there a mirror on the tmo website to get it from at all?
just do the factory restore, u will shortly after be in the update process.
got the g2 t-mobile (last night) and done this last night. went to 1.6 and then 2.1 i think.
due to sense, u wont really see much difference in the layout.
Aah yer, thats kinda eorked. My phone now asks to update. I click the Update now button and the phone restarts. It then reboots with a yellow explamation icon with a phone amd doesnt do anything else at all. I left it for over an hour. Any suggestions? Ive tried restarting, battery off ect but just keep getting the yellow icon after the update reboot... mmm

[Q] Use myTouch 3G without contract?

I switched my wife over to Sprint to be on my family plan and I thought it would be nice to use her old T-Mobile myTouch 3G as wifi-only Android device. I have already reset the device to stock. It was never rooted or anything.
The problem is that now it boots up and says "touch the android to begin". But we don't have T-Mobile service on it, so it won't let me get past the setup. I have Googled this and I can find is some stuff about touching the 4 corners, but it does not work.
I would just like to do two things:
1) Load the new 2.2 ROM
2) Use the phone on my home network
How? Please help.
I have experience with custom ROMs on Windows Mobile phones, I'm even running Froyo on my Touch Diamond, but I'm new to the native Android scene...
You'll need to just throw a data enabled SIM in to activate and you'll be good after. You'll have to have one for T-Mobile though unless you unlock the phone. A lot of people have had success getting an unlock code from T-Mobile though so that shouldn't be too hard, just a phone call.

So to be clear, there's no method to simply connect the phone to my computer using USB and bypass activation and/or load a new ROM? Keeping in mind that I don't want to use any cellular service with it...

cant you just skip the sign in part? then just use wifi?
if not, maybe you need to root it andload cm or something on it
on my backup mt3g, which is rooted, with cm6, i can skip the sign in, and then use wifi
He can't bypass the activation on the stock ROM. It'll be a pain to root without being able to access the phone unless he's got ready access to another Android powered device.

more evidence of:
stock=bad
root=good
btw, with UniversalAndroot, you could root that sucker in literally one or two clicks, my 7 year old niece could do it, then install rom manager, and if you dont have a file explorer, here's root explorer
after that, i would wipe all, flash cm nightly 221 over that stock junk and add pershoot's kernel
problem solved-skip sign-in and use your mt3g on da wi-fi
That would be great if he didn't have to get past the activation screen on the stock ROM initially to do all of it. Not trying to troll you, just saying.

guess he just needs to borrow a friend's tmo sim card, then
oh well
just went back and read his op
"I have already reset the device to stock. It was never rooted or anything."
curious as to why he "reset" if it wasnt rooted? should have just left it alone
wonder if the friendly folks at the Tmo store would let him borrow a sim for a few minutes

I was able to successfully unlocked my Evo

So my original Evo 4G got ran over by a BrightHouse van. At least it was replaced the next day but to my demise i couldn't immediately root it. I found out i had to do newer steps i havent done b4. If was fun to see my phone become the phone i was had. Suffice to say Ausurion replaced my phone with the new updates and I got it unlcocked watermrk removed. S-off and flash with the new MIKG
