I switched my wife over to Sprint to be on my family plan and I thought it would be nice to use her old T-Mobile myTouch 3G as wifi-only Android device. I have already reset the device to stock. It was never rooted or anything.
The problem is that now it boots up and says "touch the android to begin". But we don't have T-Mobile service on it, so it won't let me get past the setup. I have Googled this and I can find is some stuff about touching the 4 corners, but it does not work.
I would just like to do two things:
1) Load the new 2.2 ROM
2) Use the phone on my home network
How? Please help.
I have experience with custom ROMs on Windows Mobile phones, I'm even running Froyo on my Touch Diamond, but I'm new to the native Android scene...
You'll need to just throw a data enabled SIM in to activate and you'll be good after. You'll have to have one for T-Mobile though unless you unlock the phone. A lot of people have had success getting an unlock code from T-Mobile though so that shouldn't be too hard, just a phone call.

So to be clear, there's no method to simply connect the phone to my computer using USB and bypass activation and/or load a new ROM? Keeping in mind that I don't want to use any cellular service with it...

cant you just skip the sign in part? then just use wifi?
if not, maybe you need to root it andload cm or something on it
on my backup mt3g, which is rooted, with cm6, i can skip the sign in, and then use wifi
He can't bypass the activation on the stock ROM. It'll be a pain to root without being able to access the phone unless he's got ready access to another Android powered device.

more evidence of:
stock=bad
root=good
btw, with UniversalAndroot, you could root that sucker in literally one or two clicks, my 7 year old niece could do it, then install rom manager, and if you dont have a file explorer, here's root explorer
after that, i would wipe all, flash cm nightly 221 over that stock junk and add pershoot's kernel
problem solved-skip sign-in and use your mt3g on da wi-fi
That would be great if he didn't have to get past the activation screen on the stock ROM initially to do all of it. Not trying to troll you, just saying.

guess he just needs to borrow a friend's tmo sim card, then
oh well
just went back and read his op
"I have already reset the device to stock. It was never rooted or anything."
curious as to why he "reset" if it wasnt rooted? should have just left it alone
wonder if the friendly folks at the Tmo store would let him borrow a sim for a few minutes

The code from it is what Regaw used in his thread on how to root 2.1. I just downloaded and it is an apk. I'm still rooted from 1.5 but it appears you can download from your phone and run the app and then you have root.

i dont know if it works for hero users, but ive read quite a few success stories over at the evo forums.
I had a sneaking suspicion that the key to rooting the Hero was going to be tied to the Evo. The Evo gets rooted soon after Google I/O and they held the code back to get it done until evo release day, which makes sense. I'm quite happy with how things are looking. When I eventually scrape the pennies together to get the Evo I'll be able to root it easily.
That's going to be a lot of pennies. I told one of the guys from work I was getting the Evo and he was like "son of a b!tch" I can't afford one right now, but the look on his face was funny.

I can get one at new subscriber rates in 11 months. I'm hoping that in 6 months the Evo is old and busted and there will people dumping it for brand new hotness. What I'd really like is an Evo specced phone without 4G or it's upcharge.

Plus 1 on that! I'm not unhappy with my Hero though. I AM sort of regretting getting the Hero, because now I want the cool new phones! Actually, I'll blame it on the Instinct and being on the everything family plan, which give me premier account status, where I get the full upgrade every year...

Maybe Regaw will chime in on this and tell us what's going on with it, and if someone just took his work and turned it into an app.
Confirmed
I confirm this 1 click root does work on the Hero. Love this method. Great work from the developers.

did it root with 2.1, or with 2.1+the ota update that was recently released?

I too did this, but now my Hero won't update the weather and I can't access the market...something about a data connection error.
Anyone else experiencing this?
oops, make that "a network error has occurred"
unrEVOked is a one-click-root tool by mmastrac who also got a lot of help from the likes of toastcfh, maejrep, and some other guys.
The exploit behind the tool is the exact same one used in Regawmod's root for 2.1, just the boot.img was patched to play nicely with our phones.
Then again, I don't see why this is in the development section.
so.. lol im not to new to this but is this flashing a recovery? or just gaining root and adding su ect ect.
well i will find out in a min either way lol
edit:
worked perfectly, no problems here.
Is there any chance this has messed with my Hero? I can't get online and weather won't display or connect. I have done multiple soft resets. Is there something I am forgetting to do? I downloaded and ran the unrevoked apk.
try loading a custom rom.
or call customer service, Sprint shut off my data for now reason last week and couldnt tell me how it happend.
does the phone make calls? sms? mms?
Well, I did another soft reset, but this time pulled the battery and waited several minutes. The network access came back, weather started working again, etc. So then I downloaded/installed wireless tether and started to play with that but then the network access went down again. I can't figure out if its Sprint getting screwy or this phone
T-Mobile support confirmed that there have been alot of complaints regarding sluggish phones after updating to OS 2.2.1. They said that they are offering to exchange myTouch 3G phones with the LG Optimus-T phone due to the problems caused by the update. I checked the specs on each phone and they are quite similar; the LG's processor is a bit faster. Has anyone tried the LG Optimus-T? I'm gonna go to the T-Mobile store to test it out, but I figured I'd check out all your opinions before I make a decision.
Thanks,

optimus is way faster. it feels better in the hand too. and it can run lwp smoothly without lags

I tried out the Optimus-T at the T-Mobile store; the extra 80Mhz of processor really makes a drastic difference! I'm definitely gonna swap the myTouch for an Optimus-T. The one thing that I wasn't able to test out at the store was the built-in microphone. I'm a musician and I use the mic alot to record guitar riffs if I think I'm going to forget them. I tried out a couple different smart phones before I went with the myTouch and the mics on some of the other phones were terrible. Anyone have any comments on the quality of the Optimus-T's mic? When it comes down to it, I really don't have any option but to swap phones; 2.2 drools on the myTouch.

How is it fixable? I've tried multiple hard resets. Running it with no applications or widgets running, no GPS, no anything and it still is sloooooow. What do you suggest because I'd rather keep the myTouch. Please advise.

Easy day. Download this file and rename it sappimg.zip (not sappimg.zip.zip)(To make sure go to Start->Control Panel->Folder Options->View Tab-> Uncheck "Hide known file extensions"). Then download this file and rename it to update.zip. Next, put them both on the root of your SD card. Boot into hboot (volume down+power) and the phone will pickup the SAPPIMG on it's own and do a file check. When prompted, hit the trackball to continue, it'll run the updates, then hit the trackball again to reboot. When you get to the activation screen, turn the phone off. Power on holding (home+power) which will get you to a screen showing a triangle with an exclamation point and a phone. Hit (home+power) again to bring up the recovery menu. Select the "wipe data/factory reset" option, then select "apply update.zip from SD card". Let it do it's thing and sit until your back at the activation screen. I'm sure you can figure it out from there.

What does this do to the phone? Will it void the warranty?
No, everything is stock. Your basically downgrading back to Android 1.6 and then reapplying the update, but doing it properly. The update should have included a script that would clean up the phones cache, but it apparently doesn't which is the root of the sluggish phone. I had the same issue until doing what I told you to do. Of course, I've been rooting/ROMing/theming my phone for 6 months, so I kind of figured that was the problem. Also to note, doing a factory reset after applying the update just doesn't seem to be cutting it. With my method, you'll come to the update as clean as possible.

[Q] Mytouch 1.2 trade in?
So I've been hearing that tmobile is offering a phone trade in for devices bricked by the ota update. It seems that the replacement for the mytouch 1.2 is the optimus t. The fender edition receives a vibrant. Is this the same as the optimus GT540? And is it worth manually bricking my phone to get it? And since the fender is switched for a much better phone, would it be possible to get that instead of the optimus? Please let me know.
Edit: Yes I did read the other thread about this, but that one moved off topic.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using XDA App
The Optimus T is also the Optimus One P500. You won't be able to get the Vibrant, even if you offer to pay the difference, I tried. Maybe if your persistant enough and get a nice CS Rep you may be able to weasle one out. Either way, your getting a better phone.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using Tapatalk
So you're saying I could pretend it was a fender to get the vibrant? Because I know the ship you the phone first, before requiring you to send it back. And will they let me trade in for lagginess, or do I manually have to flash the wrong update?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using XDA App
Vibrant is out unless you find a CS that's just really nice or you annoy them to the point they'll do anything to shut you up. Their going to base the swap out off of what device your account has on it. So if your account says you have a regular 1.2 then your getting the Optimus. Unless, like I said, pigs start flying and cows start pooping fossil fuel. From what I've read they're doing it for lag as well but only after you go through the facade of them having you do a factory reset from recovery and waiting a day or so.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using Tapatalk
Note that I can manipulate these people well. I bricked two mytouches trying to get root(before androot existed), and ive gotten mine replaced every time. I'll try and keep you posted.

Does this apply to the original my touch 3g? If so I would like something different than this phone. I am happy with it if not but if I can get a new phone because of the OTA update I am all for it.
Ok so i had installed universal androot on my sisters tmobile mytouch and got it rooted everything working fine thanks to you guys on the forum!
now a few days ago she updated it and ever since its super slow and it keeps restarting. I would think its because of the root but i cant even get to androot to unroot the phone because it freezes and then restarts on me...any ideas?
One, its not rooted anymore. Two, the update has been hosing a lot of phones. Does she have the headphone Jack on top or the Fender edition?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using Tapatalk
headphone jack.. I just read the other thread and am trying to dl all the stuff for it but its taking forever....
i just need the phone rooted so that she can do wifi tethering.
I did factory reboot and am now going to try universal androot again... here goes nothing!
Universal Androot wont work since your on 2.2.1. Basically you've got three choices.
1. Reinstall the update the right way which will improve performance, but it wont be as good as 1.6. I can provide the files and instructions if you want to go this route.
2. Root and install a custom ROM which, if you pick the right one, will give great performance plus extra functionality. You can use one of my guides on the first page to get this done.
3. Have her call T-Mobile complaining about the performance saying that she already did two factory resets with no change and they will send her an LG Optimus T.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using Tapatalk
think im going to go the optimus route. Can that phone do wifi tethering or will i still need to root it?
Probably still going to have to root, but its just as easy as the myTouch if not easier. Mine will be rooted on Wednesday when I get it. So just PM me and I can babystep you through it. Do a Google search though because I'm only 95% sure about wifi tethering not being stock, not 100%.

I noticed that the evo 3d now has temp root.
http://therootofallevo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=76
Would be nice if we could get someone with the latest ota to attempt it and if this temp root would work for the evo as well. I won't be able to test this until later tomorrow evening.
If anyone tries it please let me know.
I have an evo with a broken screen that I will try it on...but not today. Too much BBQ'n to do. So, unless someone has another sacrificial lamb, or is just feelin' the itch, I'll take one for the team.
Well sh1tsticks! Just read in q&a that 2 people have already tried it...no dice.
Yeah word is it is a Sense 2.0+ exploit, yet another slap in the face from Sprint & HTC for not upgrading us EVO owners to a newer version of Sense with that lackluster gingerbread update.

Evo 4g OTA 4.24.651.1 Rooted
Hi guys,
Well I'm fully rooted. Cracked a screen on my old one, 5 days ago got new unit with 4.24.651.1 Looked at every forum, could not find a way to root, finally broke down and found a person on Craigs List and he helped me via remote PC session. He charges $35 but I trated him some services I provide. I gues it involves some keygen, cuz when I have him my serial number he than came back with another number and we pushed few files on via USB Mode and I'm rooted with Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4 and than I chose MikG-v2.45-signed.zip By far the best Rom I tried on my EVO 4g. Guess I'm just mentioning this to those that still believe that that firmware has the HBOOT locked still. It is for sure rootable. I would share if I had his permission. I don't even know what was involved when he took my phones S/N but it took 10 mins to root
I'm not even promoting his services, look on CL if you like. I'm just happy to be rooted. Also I was blown away that the built in hotspot now works !! no need for wi-fi tether app ! Also i noticed much better connectivity using the hotspot from Sprint, it only allows 5 devices but worked excelent and faster. Hope I don't get a bill in the mail though Hope this info helps someone guys
Ohh my goddd hahahahahahhaah root has been available for a few days now. For free(lmfaooo) look at the date of this thread..

I've been having a lot of problems with my atrix. Currently it's just a paper weight, and I'm using my blackberry that I absolutely hate.
Basically, my phone will power on, but the modem will not power up. I have tried countless things that I've seen on these message boards, and nothing has worked.
I am able to boot into Android, but the only will reboot after 2 or 3 minutes of playing around.
I'm starting to get pretty frustrated, and I'm willing to pay someone that will be able to get my phone back to a working state.
This is time sensitive as I'm leaving for a European vacation on Tuesday, and I would like to be able to use my Atrix as I travel.
Someone, please help!
When you say the modem will not power up do you mean you have no data or wifi?
Need more info about your phone like build number, baseband, etc.
All the pertinent info can be found at Settings > About Phone.
I'm studying at uoft right now, but id need more info before I committed to anything.
Is your phone completely stock? (if yes don't answer questions you dont need to)
Is it Bell?
Is your bootloader unlocked?
Is your phone rooted?
Did you try to do anything to your phone that caused it to start working improperly?
Have you thought about turning in your phone or sending it in (since it should be under warranty)?
Basically, my phone won't boot up. When I power it on, the phone shows the motorola logo "Dual Core Technololgy." Then after about a minute, it will say "Modem did not power up (3) Starting RSD protocol support" I can't even get into the phone to use it.
I bought the phone unlocked about 2 weeks ago. It was working perfectly fine, had no issues, then all of the sudden the phone just started rebooting, and sometimes saying "Modem did not power up" But i would just take the battery out, and then it would boot up perfectly fine. But 2 days ago, removing the battery no longer worked.
I checked the warranty on Motorola's site, and the phone is under warranty. The only reason I dont want to send it off right now is because I'm leaving for Europe next week, and I want to be able to use it over there.
Also, when the phone constantly started to reboot, I wasnt try to flash anything, or mess around with ROM's or anything.
When you say unlocked, do you mean similar unlocked or was the phone unlocked?...
