[Q] myTouch 3G vs LG Optimus-T (T-Moble Offered Trade-In) - myTouch 3G, Magic General

T-Mobile support confirmed that there have been alot of complaints regarding sluggish phones after updating to OS 2.2.1. They said that they are offering to exchange myTouch 3G phones with the LG Optimus-T phone due to the problems caused by the update. I checked the specs on each phone and they are quite similar; the LG's processor is a bit faster. Has anyone tried the LG Optimus-T? I'm gonna go to the T-Mobile store to test it out, but I figured I'd check out all your opinions before I make a decision.
Thanks,
-Adam

optimus is way faster. it feels better in the hand too. and it can run lwp smoothly without lags

Think I'm going to have to look into this.

I tried out the Optimus-T at the T-Mobile store; the extra 80Mhz of processor really makes a drastic difference! I'm definitely gonna swap the myTouch for an Optimus-T. The one thing that I wasn't able to test out at the store was the built-in microphone. I'm a musician and I use the mic alot to record guitar riffs if I think I'm going to forget them. I tried out a couple different smart phones before I went with the myTouch and the mics on some of the other phones were terrible. Anyone have any comments on the quality of the Optimus-T's mic? When it comes down to it, I really don't have any option but to swap phones; 2.2 drools on the myTouch.

That's fixable, but I would definitely be OK with a new phone.

How is it fixable? I've tried multiple hard resets. Running it with no applications or widgets running, no GPS, no anything and it still is sloooooow. What do you suggest because I'd rather keep the myTouch. Please advise.

Easy day. Download this file and rename it sappimg.zip (not sappimg.zip.zip)(To make sure go to Start->Control Panel->Folder Options->View Tab-> Uncheck "Hide known file extensions"). Then download this file and rename it to update.zip. Next, put them both on the root of your SD card. Boot into hboot (volume down+power) and the phone will pickup the SAPPIMG on it's own and do a file check. When prompted, hit the trackball to continue, it'll run the updates, then hit the trackball again to reboot. When you get to the activation screen, turn the phone off. Power on holding (home+power) which will get you to a screen showing a triangle with an exclamation point and a phone. Hit (home+power) again to bring up the recovery menu. Select the "wipe data/factory reset" option, then select "apply update.zip from SD card". Let it do it's thing and sit until your back at the activation screen. I'm sure you can figure it out from there.

What does this do to the phone? Will it void the warranty?

No, everything is stock. Your basically downgrading back to Android 1.6 and then reapplying the update, but doing it properly. The update should have included a script that would clean up the phones cache, but it apparently doesn't which is the root of the sluggish phone. I had the same issue until doing what I told you to do. Of course, I've been rooting/ROMing/theming my phone for 6 months, so I kind of figured that was the problem. Also to note, doing a factory reset after applying the update just doesn't seem to be cutting it. With my method, you'll come to the update as clean as possible.

Oh yeah, one more thing.. Can I do this on a Mac, or do you need a Windows computer?
Thanks,

A Mac will be fine.

if I re-root and use clockworkmod recovery, will the cache cleaner on there be suitable for this?

No, you need a fresh install, not just to clear out cache.

[Q] Mytouch 1.2 trade in?
So I've been hearing that tmobile is offering a phone trade in for devices bricked by the ota update. It seems that the replacement for the mytouch 1.2 is the optimus t. The fender edition receives a vibrant. Is this the same as the optimus GT540? And is it worth manually bricking my phone to get it? And since the fender is switched for a much better phone, would it be possible to get that instead of the optimus? Please let me know.
Edit: Yes I did read the other thread about this, but that one moved off topic.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using XDA App

The Optimus T is also the Optimus One P500. You won't be able to get the Vibrant, even if you offer to pay the difference, I tried. Maybe if your persistant enough and get a nice CS Rep you may be able to weasle one out. Either way, your getting a better phone.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using Tapatalk

So you're saying I could pretend it was a fender to get the vibrant? Because I know the ship you the phone first, before requiring you to send it back. And will they let me trade in for lagginess, or do I manually have to flash the wrong update?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using XDA App

Vibrant is out unless you find a CS that's just really nice or you annoy them to the point they'll do anything to shut you up. Their going to base the swap out off of what device your account has on it. So if your account says you have a regular 1.2 then your getting the Optimus. Unless, like I said, pigs start flying and cows start pooping fossil fuel. From what I've read they're doing it for lag as well but only after you go through the facade of them having you do a factory reset from recovery and waiting a day or so.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using Tapatalk

Note that I can manipulate these people well. I bricked two mytouches trying to get root(before androot existed), and ive gotten mine replaced every time. I'll try and keep you posted.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using XDA App

The exact same thing happened to me but in my case, i bricked three phones and this is my forth one that i am using now. Pissed off one of the reps, he said i cleaned out their stock. Hhaha
Sent from my GBRider_v4.0FR using XDA App

Does this apply to the original my touch 3g? If so I would like something different than this phone. I am happy with it if not but if I can get a new phone because of the OTA update I am all for it.

do you guys think if i apply a manual non-rooted update it would fix the problem?
if yes, where can i get a link to download this?
RUU
You should try running any of the stock RUU's; maybe even the most recent one (although I make no warranty; and this is at your risk). Perhaps your reboot loop is a heat related issue due to a faulty radio which is working too hard.
http://www.shipped-roms.com/shipped/Incredible/
has the RUU's although it is not clear as to how long.
I am on my 2nd incredible; first one overheated and would then would do a 4-13 white screen / black screen / white screen / ... until it would move on.

Welp
While it may not help you, it can't hurt to say. I was having huge reboot issues ... highest number was 13 initial white screen / black screen cycles. I could also NEVER get into Recovery (I could get into HBOOT but when I chose recovery, it would do TWO reboots, the second being full). A battery pull was usually needed.
However, the one thing that allowed me into recovery, etc., was to let the phone charge overnight to 100% and let it be. In the morning, the phone was charged and cool. At that point, I could easily get into recovery, start up, etc.
While I am sure you have tried this; just wanted to note to make sure your phone is cool and you did a battery pull for at least 10 minutes.
I too have this issue
I also have a stock incredible that I bought second hand, which when i bought it, I checked to make sure the device was ok. When I activated it like 2 minutes later it entered a reboot loop. I thought it might be a botched PRL so I went to the Verizon Rep (I met the seller at vz store) and he performed a forced activation. It continued the reboot loop so I took it home. I noticed that if I was outside or near a window, the phone would act normally. I used this discovery to root it and install a recovery. I flashed a few kernel/rom/radio combinations including stock rooted but there was no luck. I flashed back to RUU and it continued to reboot loop. The next day I reversed the activation back to my Eris. 20 minutes later the phone is perfect. I reactivated the device and it commenced rebooting immediately. I took it back to the store and they noted the same behavior. I'm pretty sure it's a faulty radio but since it wasn't activated on the original # they couldn't warranty it. They did tell me if the original owner activates it, they will warranty it so were gonna do that. I hope nobody else has this issue, but if you have this problem, try RUU, and if that doesnt fix it, it's likely hardware failure

[Q] PLZ help, Getting replacment phone soon...

So I am having issues with my G2, the quality in calls is horrible, and been getting worse. (Voices on other end cutting in and out, but the other party can hear me just fine)
SO I called T Mobile, and they are sending me one free of charge(Bare-bones, just the phone, I keep my battery, sim, sdcard, etc)
MY QUESTION IS: Before I send my current G2 back to t mobile, should I put it back to main factory settings??? (I have visionary, gscript, setcpu, etc.) I don't want them to see that, and them be like you voided it, so now you have to pay for two phones.
So do I set it back to factory, and if so, how do I do that, so they don't know I rooted it? I'm sorry I tried searching the forums, and did not find anything.
Thank-you in advance for your help.

You may as well, just to be on the safe side. Plus, that way it'll erase all of your personal information from the phone before they receive it back.

I hope you don't get charge cuz if they find out you will. Trust me I got a couple of friends working for Tmo.
I did the same thing OP, no big deal... I didn't get charged..
When I got mine I asked the sales person about rooting the phone. Keep in mind this is a salesperson and not T-Mobile corporate, but she really knew her stuff. She was the one everyone else in the store went to for help when they were not sure of the answer to a customer's question.
She said, if you have to return it just get it back to looking stock. Have the stock ROM on the phone and remove any obvious root or root required apps if they are still installed after you put the stock ROM on there. She said if it made me more comfortable I could remove busybox and su, but that nobody was going to go digging into the file system to see if the phone was rooted.
Basically they know, even if they don't officially acknowledge, that rooting the phone does not break it. If the phone is running stock firmware and it is still having issues then it is highly likely that the issue is hardware. Also, the preliminary acceptance or denial of the claim is done in store. If it makes it back to the factory it is pretty much accepted unless something really fishy pops up, like it is obvious you have been dissembling the device. They might kick it back if they find a FFC or soldering at the GPS antenna, but they are not looking for the su executive at that point.
They don't check the phones out that they get back they just restore them or whatever

I found a TMO store with the Gingerbread SDCARDS but>>

I found a store in my town that had the SD Card gingerbread update so I went there today. While I was waiting to be seen, I saw a My Touch 4g get updated using the SD Card by a customer service person. It took about 10 minutes. I was encouraged to see how quick it took. Now it was my turn. The customer service (C/S) who assisted me was a former tech support person for Tmoble who was now working in a store. She was very knowledgeable and very nice. She took my sdcard out and put in the gingerbread sdcard. The update started. There was about 10 steps that the update had to go through. The first step was 'bootloader'. The C/S said that this was the first G2 that she has done. She said she had done her My Touch 4g Slide and the update went smooth so again I was encouraged. I was happy to not have to wait for the OTA.
Well the update started on the first step and 45 minutes later, it was still on the first step. So she stopped the update to allow me to do a factory reset of my phone and I did so. The store had two gingerbread sdcards so she tried the second one on my phone. I went to starbucks for coffee and 20 minutes later, the update was still stuck on the first step. So, she told me that there was something wrong. She asked me if I had done anything to the phone? I said no. I told her that this G2 was a replacement phone that I had just recieved about a month ago because my first G2 stop charging. Well she gave up and so did I.
I called TMO C/S and they said that they had no record of the G2's having problems with the store gingerbread sdcards. He first asked me if I had any third party apps on my phone, I said no. They told me that the cards did not come from them but they came from HTC. So, I called HTC. The guy there commenced to reading the press release that we all have read a thousands times about being able to go to the store and get gingerbread after August 6. He also told me that he had no record of G2's having problems getting the update at the stores. I asked him if the same SD Card was to be used on the My Touch and on the G2? He said that he did not know and yes he was tech support . He advised me to call HTC headquarters at a different number and ask them that but they were closed.
I know some of you are gonna tell me to do the update myself with the links that are eveywhere on the web. Well, I'm not gonna do that. Tmo and HTC gotta get it together. They are running a business and they MUST do what they say they gonna do. I know that TMO don't have to provide any updates, I know this but they are offiering the updates and they tell us to wait for the OTA or go to a store after the Aug 6. Well I did that, I got nothing. By the way, there are three TMO stores in my town and only one had the SDCARDS. Peace
Well they DON'T know what they are doing otherwise the custom rom community wouldn't be as big as it is if they were able to get anything right themselves. So your **** out of luck. Let us know when you want a good working phone.

That's being kinda rude. If he doesn't want to root or apply manually he doesn't have to. He's just telling us what happened. No need to be rude.
OP, if the SDcard update didn't work, you should wait and see if you can get the OTA. If the OTA isn't working for your device either, you should contact T-mobile and express that you'd like a phone with 2.3 or will properly update to 2.3, assuming that you don't want to root or manually apply the update yourself.
That's ridiculous....minus the rude part, it is true tmobile and htc would much rather see you buy one of their newer phones and renew your contact than get a good working update. Try custom roms if you can...the vision is one of the easiest to root and stable when rooted and there are hundreds of roms around, I'm sure theres some rom gingerbread flavored you'll like.

Whether you choose to root or not, it's your device and you can do what you want with it. If you want the stock T-mo experience, then they should give you what they promised you. Good luck!
While I disagree with you rooting (many of the problems here are people who shouldn't even need to root in the first place, it's not for everybody), I don't understand why you wouldn't manually update. Download the file, name it update.zip, put on your sd card root, press a few buttons, done!

I may have the answer. You said that you had received the phone as a replacement. Did it already have gingerbread on it? Remember that some of the phones people were getting as replacements had gingerbread 2.3.3 on them and if your phone was one of those you can't update from 2.3.3 to the final release which is 2.3.4. Just a thought.

The replacement phone I received was 2.2.

Well they DON'T know what they are doing otherwise the custom rom community wouldn't be as big as it is if they were able to get anything right themselves. So your **** out of luck. Let us know when you want a good working phone.

I am very familar with rooting. I rooted my G1 within 5 months of having it and it stayed rooted for a year and half more until I retired it and got the G2. The reason I chose not to root my G2 was because I did not want to be contastantly flashing and removing roms and fixing issues. I got tired of baby sitting my G1. I have other things to do.

So... you tried a bunch of half-baked "roms" made by a bunch of kiddies who don't know what they're doing and found it a royal PITA. Ever heard of a "superstock" system image? Its basically the factory image with a few goodies added in, specifically ROOT. It doesn't require any "babysitting", but opens the door for some amount of enhancement, like the ability to change your hosts file (usually used to block spam), or the ability to delete useless cruft from the system image (i.e., you don't like the gmail application? Delete it.). You don't have to go with a full out special brownies system, but it is nice to at least gain control of what you own.
The store I work at finally got the SD cards to update, but the G2 update will not install.
The update works fine on the mytouch 4g, so the card is goood.
Well that sucks. Hope you get the issue resolved soon.
Looks like I figured it out. The G2 would only update if the battery was %100 charged.
Any less and it would freeze during the update.
Now that I know the update works I'll try and post the files when I get home.
Thanks atlp99!
I'd really like to get my hands on that file. I assume it is a pc10img.zip ? Seems like this is the best solution for those of us running the 2.3.3 leak...
G2 2.3.4 update pc10img
Here is the G2 update off of the micro sd cards the stores are receiving.

Works for 2.3.3 leak!
Just used this file to update my G2 running the 2.3.3 "leaked" gingerbread rom. No problems. Just slip the file into your root directory, and hold the volume down while turning the phone on. Piece of cake. You will lose your application data, of course, but you'll be updated...

No less than a day after I suck it up and downgrade my G2 to 2.2 so I can update (using update.zip) to 2.3.4 does the PC10IMG.zip get posted. My lack of patience kicked in. Nevertheless, thank you for posting this!

Having my battery at 100 percent did not work for me. The update still just sat there looking at me. This is crazy buy while I was trying to figure out what the problem was. I decided to do checkin and about 5 minutes later, I got the updae OTA
