I was thinking. Here I am waiting for the wifi xoom since Im not with verizon
and i realized if this
http://galaxytab.samsungmobile.com/
comes out before, im prob getting it
I mean essentially its the SAME tablet, same OS, same processor
but it looks dam sexier (back, grippable), is lighter (even then the ipad 2), has SD Card, same resolution (samsung makes great screens too) and 8MP camera at the back
AND PROBABLY wont have the video watching problem since Samsung goes the extra step to secure codecs (see the galaxy S phones, they run nethin)
Only advantage I see the xoom having is the HDMI out
What do you all think
It's supposed to be a Google experience device so don't expect Samsung to include codecs for video playback. With that said, the screen will be the deciding factor for me. If it's viewing angles are better than the Xoom's, I'm returning the Xoom and getting the Tab.

You mean the codecs are only part of Sense :S ?
i never knew, on alot of my custom roms on old galaxy S which wiped out samsung stuff i still had video playback
Sense is HTC, Samsung is TouchWiz. And yes, because the codecs aren't included within stock Honeycomb, I wouldn't expect the Tab 10.1 to have them. Your past custom roms were built by people who chose to pull the codecs from TouchWiz and include them on top of Android.
ya that makes sense, like CM
ya i meant touchwiz, apologies
I do think the Tab looks better on back, and I like the finish/form of the back as far as gripping the tablet goes.
The one thing I hate is that the GT10.1 is gonna have a proprietary connector to USB, rather than a standard micro USB plug, and of course no HDMI out, but that's not super important to me.
I feel like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 probably has the same issues the Xoom does right now, and they're simply waiting for everything in 3.0 that is initially broken to be fixed before launching. Who knows when that will be though I don't think we've heard anything decently solid regarding release.
I don't think it has an sd card slot either
I can't wait until this actually becomes a xoom forum instead of a 'what should I buy instead of a xoom?' forum.
You realize there is a galaxy tab 10.1 xda forum, right?

I agree it looks great, but Samsung is soooooo slllooooowwwww with updating their devices. They took forever with Windows phones are are probably the worst manufacturer about updating their Android phones as well (many US galaxy phones are STILL on 2.1).

That has a lot to do with their touchWiz afaik, which won't be an issue with the tab 10.1.
I'd be more excited about it if there was a release date and sd card slot

the new designed tab (8.9 n 10.1) has been announced. i like the new look very much, n sdcard is now available, but sadly the camera has been downgraded to 3mp =( n it looks a bit lag in the video by androidcentral in youtube..
n, is 8.9 using tegra cpu?
anyone think i shud jump to xoom iinstead?
I think I'm firmly on the new 10.1 Tab right now. 3 MP camera is something I can live with, in exchange for the slimness and weight. I think they displayed an older build (10.6 mm) thickness, with TouchWiz on it on the AC video. So, I don't want to jump to conclusions on the lag

Yes but when compared to all the other Android tablets, the rear camera is the worst. Even worst then any smartphone out last year and now.

But why in the world would you ever need a 8MP camera on your 10" tablet??? Is there ever a time when you have your tablet with you and not your phone or other digital camera/DSLR and you just need to take a hi-res photo?

I agree. I only use my phone camera for an "Oh Crap" spontaneous photo, not a thought out photograph where high res makes a difference. Not to mention that the quality of the lens really determines the end quality of the image. You can find shots taken on a 3MP camera with a great lens that will blow you away.

I haven't see the Androidcentral video. But apparently there were no functioning new Galaxy Tab 10.1. The old 10.1 was used to demonstrate Honeycomb and TouchWiz. So I probably wouldn't worry too much about that, since that isn't the tablet we are getting anyway.
I'm not concerned about the camera. I'd like to have a camera, but I don't require it to be uber. I think having a good camera on my smart phone is far more important, because it's easier to hold and click pictures with a 4 inch phone than a 10 inch tablet.
Xoom disappointed me, I returned mine after a few days. It was too heavy, didn't feel comfortable to hold long, and the screen was good, but not great.
Galaxy Tab is much lighter and appears to be more comfortable to hold. Comfort is huge, I want to be able to hold this thing in my hands without fatigue or sharp corners digging into my fingers.
And the PLS screen, no doubt will blow away whatever type of panel the Xoom is using.

I just got back from the Verizon store and spent a good 20 minutes with the Xoom, and honestly my arm got tired. That thing is HEAVY. Its the first thing you notice when you pick it up. It is obviously solidly built which is what the weight offers, but man I couldn't see myself using that thing with one hand for very long.
1.6lbs is heavy. If these things come out and are solidly built for 1lb I'll be sold on it.
Should also note that using the Xoom makes me realize I probably won't want anything smaller than a 10.1" tablet. The Xoom has a much smaller footprint than the iPad because it is 16:9 and not 4:3. I think the 8.9" might be a little too small. I like the 10.1" ability to be able to view full web pages without pinching/zooming to read them properly.
Yep, I'm sold on the 10.1 even though i swore to never purchase a Samsung device. I'm putting my Xoom up for sale as of today

Nvidia's tegra site has the galaxy tab 10.1 listed as having the tegra 2
I will probably look to buy the 10.1v (or whatever they end up calling the original). I want to buy in the next month or so, so if it's not available it will be the iPad 2 until June.
Have you seen the needle like charger tip for the xoom? Bad things will happen to something so flimsy... That's half the reason I took mine back. Other half is the new Tab 10.1.
I need another tablet for the wife. Was thinking about giving her my current xoom and getting the samsung 10.1 when it comes out.
Is there any reason why I would regret that decision? It seems like the samsung is just as open as the xoom. I have nothing against the xoom, but since I just bought a samsung galaxy sII i thought it would be nice to match it with the new tablet.
I just want to know if I am overlooking something, and there is a reason I should stick with the xoom.

Now, we aren't certain about anything yet.
I hate TW (Vibrant owner) as much as the next guy, but I've heard conflicting reports (too lazy to properly cite right now) on whether the new incarnation of TW will simply be a UI overlay, or a fully integrated modification to the OS.
I'm certainly keeping my ear to the ground re: the new line of Galaxy tablets.
That said, if the tablet need is now, the Xoom is the best bet IMO.

Please put a disclaimer when you post this. There is no confirmation whether or not these devices will have touch wiz. Many reports even say that if it does come with TouchWiz, it will be able to be turned off.
I actually plan on selling my Xoom once a tablet with the new Qualcomm chipset comes out. I didn't realize the media limitations of the Tegra 2 until after I bought it and am having a bit of buyers remorse now. The new Qualcomms can decode 1080p like the TI used in the Playbook. I'm not sure if this is something that can be addressed by nvidia via drivers. For the record I'm able to play high profile (4500kbps) 720p encoded with DVD Catalyst on my Xoom.

The Samsung 10.1 tab have about same weight as the ipad2, so will be a bit lighter than the Xoom, not sure if this will affect battery life.
The biggest advantage of the 10.1 tab I think will be a better screen than the Xoom. I’m happy with the quality and viewing angle of my Xoom. However, when compared to my 7” Galaxy tab and friend's ipad, the Xoom’s screen looks dull and not as bright.
All depend on how long you want to wait for the 10.1 Galaxy tab.
Also the Galaxy tab 8.9 (470g) is almost light as the 7" Galaxy tab (380g), that might be a good 2nd tablet.

From the specs we saw on the GT 10.1v (the older model) the battery size will be the same or slightly bigger than the Xoom.
FWIW. I'm growing a bit tired of the size/weight of the Xoom. The 8.9 (or other similar sized/weighted tablets) might be up my alley. The Xoom is just too clumsy and heavy for extended 1 handed use (not to mention that the UI is not very landscape 1-hand friendly). I'll take a device that is made out of plastic as long as its light and well built for the components.
I think they mentioned that the touch wiz ux is just a set of widgets and not fully integrated into the system

That Tab 10.1 is a sexy looking device. Tough decision. It might be worth going with the 10.1 just to get the better screen, though IIRC, it doesn't have a SDcard slot (not that it's doing us Xoom owners much good right now).
That said, I think physical storage capacity is almost irrelevant anymore. I have both Amazon cloud for my music and Google cloud for pictures and docs. The only storage I actually need is for apps, and they're generally small.

I think you're right. Can't remember, but I feel like the 8.9 didn't have a SDcard slot though. Could be wrong.
The new samsung galaxy 10.1 should be a nice tablet and should not come with anything but pure honeycomb with some added apps/Widgets.
Other tablets to consider, besides the ipad2 or new Samsung 10.1:
Asus transformer, which will be short on stock and hard to come by for the next few months or so. It has a nice pricepoint and some nice accessories.
Nook color, just updated to basically be a pseudo tablet but has alot of Dev/rom support so is pretty much full blow android experience.
HTC flyer, will have some very awesome features especially very accurate integration with stylus, not using honeycomb experience but should be upgraded to honeycomb soon after release.
Playbook, nice tablet but is kind of hampered at the moment and is meant more for business user in my opinion.
Toshiba 10.1 inch tablet rumored to be Google's baby and if true should get great honeycomb support. This will be THE tablet if all the rumors are true (do a Google search for nexus tablet or nexus t). We should find out at Google I/o on may 10th or 11th.
Honestly I would go with the xoom or the Toshiba tablet. I would certainly wait till Google I/o to make a decision since the xoom should have some updates coming down the pipe as well.
I for one will keep my Xoom and upgrade a year or 2 down the road (I'll give it to my wife or something) to the latest octuple core processor 1mm thick 10" tablet capable of playing 4K video flawlessly. Then I will laugh at all of you with your old samsung 10.1's! bwahahaha
I'd wait to see if it has a working fastboot first, and can flash unsigned images.
Touchwiz for Honeycomb
Anandtech is saying it will ship with Touchwiz for Honeycomb.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1's greatest attribute is how thin and light it is. Touchwiz will hinder you if you wanted to stay current with Honeycomb's latest n greatest versions.

GO CANES!!!
Ok so I'm looking into buying an android tablet because I'm going on a road trip to Vegas in July and its a 3 day drive so I wanted to get one to stay entertained on the drive and while we r out there (I can't gamble because I'm only 16 ). So I can't decide between the galaxy tab 10.1 and the xoom.
From what I have heard the xoom's display is kinda dim and glary and the speakers r decent but it has stock 3.0 so it get direct updates which is a huge plus.
But I'm guessing the tab will have some kind of super amoled screen since just about all of their phones do so that would be a plus. But this will have a touchwiz overlay on it which is a downside because Samsung f***ing sucks with updates and I hate waiting. But if google releases the source code for 3.0 then it wont matter because I'm sure devs will make some good roms for it.
So what do you guys think will be better?

Couldn't find the specs for the Tab 10.1 from Samsung's site but I think I found the specs on some other site and it looks to be comparable to the XOOM (The specs for the Tab: (google "samsung galaxy tab 10.1 specifications" and first link, I would post the link itself but the forum won't let me since I don't have enough posts))
Since the Tab 10.1 isn't out yet, it makes it hard to really compare based off of just specs alone (even more so when the specs can changed from now until released date in June, although they probably won't change it much now since it's getting closer to that date).
What I can see, the Tab 10.1 will have support for playback in 1080p and records in 720p. The XOOM playbacks and records in 720p. The Tab's back facing camera is only 3MP while the XOOM's 5MP. The front facing is 2MP for both.
Both tablets are using the same processor so not much to say about that.
Both tablets are using 3.0 Honeycomb but the Tab 10.1 has a few UI changes but not by much (probably by way of an add APK file since Google is not allowing manufacturers to change the core UI from my understanding, but I could be wrong).
Another thing that's different is that the Tab 10.1 will be for 3G/WiFi only while the XOOM will be upgraded to 4G LTE once available.
I, personally, gotten the XOOM because I feel in love with what it can do plus the fact that it's pure Android allows for easy and fast upgrades. Plus the fact that it's upgraded to 4G LTE is awesome for using the faster speeds once available.
Note that Xoom is NOT a Nexus device.
Meaning, it will get update from Motorola, and NOT directly from Google.
TouchWiz on GTab 10.1 is not deeply integrated on OS like in the Samsung phones. It is just apps and Widgets. It does not alter the Android Honeycomb UI.
That's about Android update.

True, but I said it as such due to the fact that the updates will be much faster since there is no core UI changes
I do love my Xoom, but play on upgrading to either the 10.1 or 8.9 Galaxy tab when the 3G/4G versions are out. It's significantly lighter and thinner than the Xoom (almost half the weight, and yes, it does matter) and I personally look forward to TouchWiz with resizable widgets and such, though I realize I'm in the minority.
Once it's out, go to the store, try them both, see how they feel. something like a tablet (or ebook reader, I got the original Nook over a Kindle because of this) it really matter how it feels in your hands, and that differs with every person.
The sexy thin Tab 10.1 for sure, if you can wait until they come out, if you need a tab now thats another debate

hi all,
im after some of your advice as to the best tablet, im going to ask in the Transformer and Galaxy forums as well, but id like your opinions on what is the best tablet to buy, obviously you guys are using the Xoom already, and are happily modding the hell out of them, so you may have experience with the others as well.
i am trying to find somewhere which has all 3 which i can look at side by side, but in the UK im pretty much left with Pc world/Currys.. so i thought id do the next best thing and talk to people who have/use them.
i have narrowed my choices to;
Motorola Xoom,
Asus Transformer
Samsung Galaxy 10.1
if possible can you let me know what your experiences are like with any of them.
Thanks All.

There are already quite a few threads in General and in Q&A touching on the comparsion between these tablets. There's been pretty frank discussion of pros and cons, but as you'd expect on a Xoom forum, most passionate cooments were pro-Xoom. Check them out...you will need to go back a few pages in both sections, but it makes for some lively reading.
Good luck with your decision-making process (but buy the Xoom!)
The Xoom is quite heavy so if you want to hold it with one hand for a minute or two, it isn't the right tablet. It's built really durable but the weight factor is a big con for me. It also has really good specs, just look at reviews on youtube on the tablets. Also, make sure you see all your options! Many of these tablets are getting a price reduction via coupon so find them first so you save a hundred or two.

The Xoom isn't the heaviest tab, but it is the best built. Those others incorporate a lot of plastic and flex a lot if squeezed. There are some issues with all of them, some are related to build quality/quality control, and others are more subjective.
Hello
I purchased my Xoom from best buy 2 weeks ago at the time of purchase I had a play on the Asus and Acer. I chose the XOOM on the back of the better build quality and feel. Yes it is that little bit heavier but it feels better. I also thought about the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 to match it with my Galaxy SII phone but the lack of an sd slot was a big let down for me. Since then Google have purchased part of Motorola which should mean that the Xoom should be supported for a long time to come.

Wow a quadruple post! I haven't seen one of those in awhile ;p
Sorry only meant to press it 1 time.
I've had my Xoom since Feb 24th at 11:12 a.m. & it's hands down the best to me.I love it.I played with the Samsung 10.1 in the store a few weeks ago & wasn't impressed. All it was was thinner..The screen on it didn't blow me away as some people in the 10.1 forum suggests.Me & my Xoom have been thru a lot together
Just come through the same problem as you and narrowed it down to the xoom, for build and expansion and the galaxy tab, for screen and light wieght.
The deciding factor was the price, pc world now do the xoom for £329 wifi or £400 for 3g. I couldnt turn down an offer like that and havent looked back since yes the xoom is a little heavy but I like that! And the screen is fine too, not as bright as the galaxy tab or as vivid colours but long as your not comparing them back to back you'll never notice it tbh.
Good luck with the choice

I think the Xoom's colors are more natural, if more subdued. I had a chance to compare my Xoom vs. a Galaxy Tab 10.1 yesterday and the GTab's screen is certainly vivid! Very good for some things (movies, games), but as an artist, I like to see my work and others' work in a more natural color palette. YMMV.

I think the Xoom's colors are more natural, if more subdued. I had a chance to compare my Xoom vs. a Galaxy Tab 10.1 yesterday and the GTab's screen is certainly vivid! Very true and feel the same myself and was the same reason I went for the desire HD rather than the gallaxy s but some people see bright and think its better, its all down to personal taste I suppose

Definitely the xoom. Its built better then other tabs and has some great support as well.
I couldn't be happier.
The sound beats all other tabs and the display may not be as bright but its ultra responsive. The transformer had a nice responsive screen as well but build quality was subpar.
Like others said before this tablet has a subdued color palette which is great.

hmm i hadnt thought about the vivid colour schemes..
im tempted to wait a bit longer to see what comes out in the next wave of tablets, though im unsure the price of the current best bunch is going to fall by much.
If cost is not a concern, (i guess there isn't a large varience in price anyways), I would advise the galaxy. It is in general just a bit more refined than the xoom. But if you want the hdmi, standard USB, slightly better cameras and more dev work, you can't go wrong with the xoom...
