for those who may be interested...it is possible to have your hero flashed to work on the Cricket network. it may not be for everyone, but i couldn't resist the lure of $40/mo unlimited everything with no contract. (saves around $1,000+ over the life of the contract)
here's what i did:
-buy cdma hero on ebay
-go to a cricket store and ask them to activate the phone
-usually the rep will "know a guy" who can work with htc (try a few stores or call around)
-they may charge you $30 or so to flash it and its working
wireless data, visual voicemail, and mms dont' work...but they expect to get them working soon (phone is only a few weeks old at this point)... and where i'm at, i almost always have wifi and don't care about vm or mms.
Might see if any of these guys know about xda...perhaps they just need to be pointed here to share the wealth of what they're doing.
HTC Hero Phone Code Numbers ##
if you do transfer to cricket (or perhaps another cdma carrier), a good thing to know is:
##000000#
this will allow you to edit or view EPST (change/view your Mobile Directory Number MDN and MSID)
The MDN is your current phone number, your local cricket store can give you your MSID (which also depends on your phone number).

The radio is separate from the OS and the traditional CDMA tools work on the Hero like any other phone. There are plenty of other forums talking about how to port CDMA phones to other providers; especially Indian forums because there are large CDMA networks there.
Edit: when he says "flash it," he probably just means to put a new PRL (preferred roaming list) and editing the details under ##DATA to match what another provider wants.

"Broadband Workaround Trick"
Hey guys!
I'm new to the Hero (CDMA Sprint flashed to Cricket) and Android. Totally new. I'm no stranger to Windows Mobile though, I've been a pretty intense user and contributor to development on the Axim x51v. Thought it was time to update though, and here I am.
Now, I've googled my butt off (which is going to make it tough to poop later, for sure), and I just can't find much detail or step by step info on how to get internet access working on this thing other than Wifi.
I have phone/text, and I also bought a Cricket Broadband plan to go along with it.
My phone is not rooted, not unlocked, unless this was part of what they did at the Cricket store to get my Hero flashed to Cricket.
I've read some mentions in google searches about a way to use my Broadband service through my phone... but I need some step by step info on how to do this. Can anyone help? What would be handy, as a somewhat savvy noob, would be prerequisites, instructions, and info I'll need to do this.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help, and I apologize in advance if I didn't google well enough before asking... although I definitely gave it a damn good shot before asking for help!
I've never tried it, so i don't know, but i have flashed a lot of WM phones to cricket with working mms and WAP. I would think you could get the internet to work by entering first changing your msl to 000000 and then just entering in all the correct settings in your EPST like you would a windows mobile phone?
cricket wap on hero
the phone has built in proxy support so u can download anycut from the market and input "wap.mycricket.com" and "8080" in the proxy settings. however most of the internet apps dont work, but the browser does. i believe the broadband hack or possibly the html plan will help in getting the internet apps to work but havent tried yet
htc hero wap no working
.i have a sprint htc hero that had cellular south on it now its flashed to cricket.the only thing working is calling.can you walk me through getting internet.i belive my wap setting are set up,but when i try and connect to mobile network it says "standbye for connecting to mobile network then connecting and keeps repeating"i have read that iv got to root the phone.iv been trying to root with no success.and hepl please .ty
htc hero cricket
please help dont want to try anything till im shure .lol
its actually possible. my friend works for cricket and got a sprint branded touch pro working. he just has voice and mms. but its a start i guess. i needs my data lol.
so why would you want a hero that only half the features work on?
i have an htc hero...i live in laredo tx..if anyone knows how i can flash this cell phone to cricket please let me know..they have told me that they dont have the software to do so..please HELP ME!!! *TeAr* and where did u guyz flash it so i can go overthere if i cant do to here....

Flashing Motorola droid to Cricket...?
Is there a step by step way to Flash Motorola Droid to Cricket. I have heard that Cricket uses a proxy. There is a some info on the web but most of it is partial or sketchy at best. There is also some talk that the Droid will only support voice and there is also problems with certain apps. If anyone has some info please post.
You wouldn't need to flash the device, you just need to have a way to change the ESN of the droid to your phone number in crickets system, and you would need to know all of crickets server settings for their cell phone network, and program it into the droid using ##PROGRAM in the phone and hit send to get to the manual programming menu. A tech at cricket probable has access to the manual programming settings, but whether or not they're willing to share with you is another story.
This does not make sense. If only a ESN # change was required then why would they be Flashing the Droid for Cricket. It's hard to say since I am unfamiliar with phone flashing.
I would like to know as well. So far what I've read is settings for EVDO don't stick. They revert back to verizon after a reset. So everything works, but that. And without EVDO you're stuck on 1x internet... If anyone has read anything to the contrary or knows how to do it, I would be more than greatful if they would share =)

If I root the droid and put CM on it would i be able to keep the ##PROGRAM settings after a reboot? I want to avoid paying 50 bucks for a F***in "flash"

FLASH FLASH FLASH ... i got the full flash for a Droid 2 then rooted
i get 3g and 1x never EVDO in my area..
Ive flashed like 3 roms already and havent lost flash
i recommend it
if you know what ur doin
Edit: Plus if you flash via Cricket Retailer they will reflash for 1 yr if you lose flash..
I'm using DC v1 right now and there is no MNS (Mobile Network Sharing) as of now, so I have made a nand img for you all of the last rom that I used that had MNS working 100%.
I use this ONLY when I need to tether... which is often lol because I live on campus at the University of Miami.
I flashed Flipz's 2.1 v1.8-7 Eclair (which has working MNS) that I had lying around.
Stripped it for JUST tethering, got rid of Sprint crap & the works.
Includes,
Wireless Tether
&
NetCounter. Since there is no display on how much data/wifi you are using, NetCounter is a *free* program on the market that will tell you.
THIS IS A NANDROID IMAGE. DO NOT FLASH AS A .ZIP!!!!!
I am not responsible if this screws anything up. I just posted my nand image.
UNZIP FILE AND PUT FOLDER "2.1_Eclair_Tether" ON YOU SDCARD UNDER:
nandroid > Your serial # >
THEN APPLY LIKE A NORMAL NAND RESTORE.
I have never shared a Nandriod image before, so not even sure if it will work. I DID NOT sign into anything after flashing (google, market, gmail, facebook...) so it is completely stock.
Anyone willing to try this nand restore?
Just trying to help out those who miss MNS.
Also, post your results, would like to know if sharing nandroid backups could be convenient.

I flashed an old Nandroid backup onto a replacement phone (different serial, obviously) and it worked fine. Only thing that I had to do afterwards was clear the cache on Gmail for some reason, though I don't think it was related to flashing between different phones since others in the forums have reported the same issue.
Oh...and I'm using EasyTether Lite that I'd downloaded from the market a while back. Works great. I hear that the latest version has some additional limitations though...such as no https sites.
I'm using DC 2.1 and my MNS works fine.
Start up wireless tether, connect with laptop or whatever, disable mobile network, enable mobile network, wireless tether works perfect.
Its a bug, but that is the fix. Only need to do it once I believe.

I'm anxious to see this too. I remember working on my Hero back when tethering on 1.5 discussions were happening, and really the only thing you could do in the CDMA Workshop (I think that's the name of it) was change your email address used as your id to the network from the one that's using PAM to mimic what was being sent during normal data usage. I think in the PAM communication was set blank, and the normal one was set to your id. It didn't work at all actually. It seemed that something else was built into the Android/Sprint stuff in Android that made that impossible. This is basically what you did, albeit through WindowsMobile's registry, to accomplish the same result in windows mobile.
I think in this instance, it's the other way around. Meaning that we have to get around it from a software standpoint so that it doesn't access the Sprint validation to determine whether to use PAM (Phone as Modem) line or normal line (even though it's just an id.)
This is what MNS accomplishes, it gets around that by appearing as normal data, and doesn't cause our Hero to throw error 67 data failure messages.
I may be completely off, but sounds feasible right?

Did you finish the process with QPST after using CDMA? If your getting a fast busy signal like sound, it's more then likely Cricket not having your correct ESN. Do you have an account setup already and have provided them your converted MEID #?
My friend had given me the wrong MIN number.. for some reason data still worked. Changed the MIN and walla.. Find out another thing later that day though.. Google voice acts crazy with cricket on a flashed Droid X. Made it pretty much impossible for someone to call me. Would actually say the number is no longer in service. Tried to deactivate call forwarding from the info in account settings for google voice. it says to dial *740 on your phone and hit call.. Doesn't work. *720 WILL fix the issue though. Something to do with Cricket not doing conditional call forwarding. .

Glad to hear it's working. Actually, funny thing with Cricket and data...as soon as your done with CDMA, you will have data. Let's say you have a data plan already on your phone and you buy another phone you are going to upgrade to. You can still flash your new phone to Cricket and while your old phone might not have voice calls/texts, you can surf the web on both phones still getting perfectly clear 3G where it's available
YEA! I have a friend that i flashed a mogul and a Touch pro to cricket back in the day. He had the mogul activated and was still able to surf the web with the Touch pro. Nice little bonus i guess. lol

There used to be an online tutorial on how to flash a DX to Cricket but the whole forum has been down for a while. Its a lengthy process to flash and as you already know, it takes a long time if you don't know what you are doing 100%. Techs charge up to $90 for this flash for a reason...they know the ins and outs and have a guide that's taken time and patience to make. Like myself. I can flash any Motorola Droid to Cricket in less then 10 minutes. Its taken me hours to get that fast and lots of trail and error.
What part are you having trouble with?

not sure why the other person hasnt answered but I would like some help with the same issue. I can talk and text fine via the PRL change. I can use anything CDMAWS and QPST to edit my phone but after i try using a nvram backup from whiterabbit or whether i try to edit the settings using QPST the phone restarts as normal and u see the data bar going from 1x to 3g and the phone soft resets over and over. ideas? CDMA or QPST should not be causing your phone to reset unless you accidently changed a setting in QPST. Which PRL are you using? Most stable is 49027 for the DX at the moment. Did you have these issues before the flash? Did you buy the phone used and then started the flash process? I hope you didn't get a busted DX

Ahh, that must be why it works! I am on the $55 plan and my 3G speeds are consistent 1.2Ghz when stupid iJunk users aren’t bogging down AT&T's network. When speed is at it's best, it always beats out my girlfriend’s Droid X 3G speed on Verizon, not by much but enough to say so.
Im using 49027. I've narrowed it down to possible glitch. Upon entering the info for the proxy manually it goes into 1x then 3g then reader loop. Ivebeen using a stock backup to revert to prior tweaking so I can keep trying to figure this out if u have a exact method u use im all ears. Or just ideas. Im running out lol
Also one more thing, ive just entered in the proxy information manually via the cell phone and the phone hasnt given me a boot loop like it used to, still the internet isnt working yet so im going to go into QPST and see if just changing the mobile IP setting throws me into the loop again...EDIT: it sends me into a soft restart loop since its on mob+simp f/back again... catlog didnt show anything that i can see sadly. the soft restart forces the log to stop and doesnt show why it did.switched it back to mobile ip only and stopped the reboot cycle but no data at all ugh...

Just flash it in ROM Manager
I've talked to a couple of folks on the V10 token. Some say it has no relevance and one said it might actually harm your phone since it's not even made for the Droid X specifically. I tried it and it didn’t do anything. It came to be that my MNC in my APN was incorrect.
Without doing a full SBF on your phone, there array of issues you might have are to wide to diagnose. You need to start over and not use your backup. If the problem still persists then let us know but I doubt it will if you did the Cricket flash properly.
Have you changed your APN settings as well? I use anycut from the market to edit and save it.

I've always used it and it does help. It has never broken my X. I don't know why why it doesn't work for you but I've used it on my old ERIS, Droid X, and my wifes DInc.

Alright, I've checked everywhere, so now I'm asking you guys. I have a SPRINT Samsung Galaxy S 4G phone. I would like to simply switch this thing over to another network (PagePlus), and it would be a shame to simply give up. Yes, I understand it's CDMA, but no CDMA Workshop tool I download seems to understand what it is. I have CDMA WS 3.7, and every time I click "read" it simply locks up, it doesn't matter what mode I'm in; Charging, Mass Storage, Debug on or not. So first, I guess it would be helpful to find a working CDMA tool for this particular model. I've flashed it, it's rooted, I have superuser abilities, and even a terminal emulator. Superoneclick, HTC Sync, QPST 2.7, you name it, I've tried it. I'm even willing to go so far as opening this thing up if I have to! What do?
I don't use said tool, but didi you try download mode? From power off, hold "1" and the hold power at the same time. Idk if it will help.

never used it, but if it says cannot talk to phone, did you install the Samsung drivers? You may also need Android SDK too... idunno... check the software.
Just making sure here: You are talking about the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint, and not the Samsung Galaxy S 4G for T-Mobile, right?
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
Wow. Page Plus has horrible phones. They have 5 year old VZW Phones. I see why u want the Epic there. So far, I think you can only flash to Boost Mobile and Cricket. Evo can be on Metro PCS.
Still at it
ungovernable: Yes I have all of the Samsung drivers, sry I didn't mention that before.
Zanderman: Yes, that's why I bothered to type sprint in all capital letters in the original post. Actually, I still have a standing trade offer up in Craigslist, for the same model phone with T-Mobile, just so I could unlock THAT one. So far, no one has bitten.
xboxfanj: You're telling me! Horrible phones. I've seen the T-mobile version unlocked (easy!), and other smart phones from both Samsung and Sprint unlocked too, so I'm trying not to give up. Once I find an answer, I'm gonna post the crap out of it.
Thanx to everyone so far for even bothering to read my tripe of an issue, I still have hope we can do this, and I'll keep finagling this thing.
There are sites that claim they could do it.
Here is one:
http://vannuyswireless.com/ppactivations.htm
I have never tried myself, just passing on the info:
This link may have some relevant info also:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...S-Sprint-Epic-4G-onto-Verizon-to-use-PagePlus
"We Can Activate Most Any Verizon Phones As Well As Sprint Boost MetroPCS On The PagePlus Network-The Cost For A Simple Activation Is $5-You Get Activation On PagePlus W A New Number in (818) (310 ) (323) Etc.+$2.00 AirTime.-Port-in Activations Are $10 (Port-in Is When You Transfer Your Existing Telephone Number To PagePlus) Non-Verizon Phones Will Need To Be Brought In To Be Flashed Manually And Work Times Vary By Model."
Look at the thread about switching to cricket here in the general section and follow all the steps up until you put in the cricket prl, instead put in the one for your carrier. Unfortunatly, I don't think you'll be able to get mms and web though, i don't know those settings for your carrier....

#1. Pageplus needs to add the Phone's ESN to their network, otherwise all that you're doing is in vain.
#2. You need a full Licensed version of CDMA, so 'assuming' you paid 100$ for that copy of CDMA WS 3.7, it is faulty. Even the cracked versions of CDMA aren't cracked at 3.7, it's like 2.6 or around there.
#3 If you downloaded the Trial version of 3.7, that's why it won't work, there's a high chance its on a different com port.. though this I can't vouch for, seeing to that Odin for me uses one of the first com ports on my laptop.
#4. Try CDMA WS on a different laptop.
P.S. : Having faith you get it to work, you'll want to change your MSL code to: 000000

You need to dial ##8778# and set the USB mode to "Modem" before CDMA Workshop or any diagnostic software transmitting over a COM port will be able to talk to your phone.
