[Q] Can't install Clockwordmod recovery (nand kernel open failed) - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I have a european HTC HD2 running MAGLDR 1.3 and I cannot install Clockworkmod under any circumstances. I've been running MDJ's Cyanogenmod 7 for weeks now and have the correct radio and hspl, but every time I attempt to flash clockwork I get a message saying NAND kernel open failed when I try to boot AD Recovery. I've tried both the NAND boot and the old style SD boot with no luck whatsoever. I'm now totally stumped and unable to get any of the new ROMS. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Can you give us the exact steps you have taken?
This way we can see if you missed something.

Thanks for the response,
Installed radio and hspl, then magldr 1.11 (this is the setup I'd been using for a while). Today I tried to install clockworkmod so I upgraded to magldr 1.13 at the tri color screen. That seemed to work fine, all the functions working perfectly. I then downloaded cwm 1.3 150mb and tried to install (USB flash, ran as admin etc.) The install seemed to go alright but when I tried to boot into recovery I got the error message. I ran into the same problem using the method where you put files on the SD first and using the script to install magldr 1.13 and cwm one after the other.

i had problems with cwm 150 installer. i ended up getting the 250 meg version, and editinf flash.cfg, worked first time.

Did you use AD SD or AD Recovery (option 8 )?
AD Recovery is the one to use.

I've used both and neither worked, they both result in nand kernel open failed. Its unable to find initrd or the other file no matter what i do.

Sounds like the file recovery.raw (or is it recovery.img, i forget) didn't get flashed, please confirm there is a recovery image included with the cwm files you are installing, and also please paste us the contents of your flash.cfg. file.

Try flashing 400mb clockwork mod.most roms require this mod and it does work
Sent from my HTC HD2 Gingerbread using XDA App

I got it to work by using the 250mb version with edited flash file! Thanks a lot for all the help.

open the file flash.cfg in notepad on the pc, edit the number in the system line (you will see what i mean when you see it) change it, save it, flash it.

nand kernel open failed
you are probably putting the 'clk' version of the rom in your storage card for installation. you need the 'magdlr' version of the rom for clockwork mod to correctly install android

Same problem with NAND karnel fails
I bought my HTC HD from my friend at work, it had installed, android aMAGLDR V1.13 I had a problem to erase my friends gmail account from the phone and when ever i connect to the Internet his account appears to log on and sync, I tried to reset the phone but I failed, now I tried ti flash the android regarding gunjahman's Flashing a new nand android rom over a previous one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11302885#post11302885
and I flashed with Recovery_400M and now I'm in Boot menu and can't get it to boot or anything else.
Can please anyone help me???

nand kernel open failed

after I flash with CWM, I get this when it trys to boot android "nand kernel open failed"
Also, in CWM, I get "E:Can't find misc"
installing nand without CWM works.
bump- I searched and didn't find anything helpful. I've tried 3 different roms
"Can't find misc" should only appear if you don't have a misc partition in NAND. (which is created when flashing CWM)
And nand kernel open failure probably means theres no zImage or initrd.gz in the boot partition.
Try flashing CWM from the CWM thread and then a ROM.

How did you transfer the zip file to SD? Did you use magldr? If so try re-transfering using your comp, as Magldr sometimes corrupts them.
Ricey
I have this same problem. I reflashed cwm and now i dont get the misc but no matter which rom i install from cwm i always get the kernel error =\

Did a clean install of TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 Nightly v3.3.1 and got the "nand kernel open failed" error.
I formated the SD-Card two times, reinstall cwm 150mb partition 3 times and still get the same error, first time within almost 1 year of android on my HD2 ._.
Any ideas or solutions welcome.

Typhoon doesn't use 250mb CWM, use the one provided with rom 150MB System/5MB Cache (ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.5), most "nand kernel open failed" are down to wrong CWM size
I'm getting the same error, but only with sense 3.0 roms. Any other roms I've used have installed have worked. Is there a certain step I'm missing with installing sense 3.0 roms? I'm using MAGLDR v1.13 and Clockwork Recovery Mod v3.0.2.5. I flashed recovery_150m_cache_5m.zip onto the phone using magldr usb flasher. Any ideas?

150mb for sense rom is definitely to low!
Read the rom's thread carefully guys!
It says there what CWR partition is needed.
Sense roms need SD CARD PARTITION so read the thread (it's first page).
If you have read it and your CWR partition looks exactly as it was given in the rom's thread then do task29, hspl, magldr 1.13 and CWR.
If it still doesn't work try different roms or try CLK.
Thanks for the response. How do I create a 5/240/5 partition through CWR? The last partition I made was just installed through .zip on CWR. Sorry for the questions, new to the hd2.

Hi guys, i had the same problem, and i figured maybe i can show u what i did, to help u.
i went to THIS thread and followed the instructions:
"Installation Guide for MAGLDR 1.13"
the error occured right after i flashed the MAGLDR_CWM_Recovery_v3.2.0.0_for_NexusHD2_135M.zip onto my HTC HD2.
the only thing i had to do was enter magldr boot menu (hold off button while booting)
then i choose AD RECOVERY
CWM started up and i choose install zip from SD card
ofcourse i have placed NexusHD2-Gingerbread_V3.0_NAND_(Android-2.3.5).zip onto the ROOT of my SD card previously.
the .zip file installed perfectly and then i rebooted my phone.
all was ok after that..
hope this helps!

[Q] Is my phone bricked?

First thing is first :
Radio 2.12.50.02.2
aMAGLDR 1.11
CWM Recovery 3.0.0.5
SPL 2.0.8
I was flashing from a custom nand to Hyper Droid CM7 v1.0.3. Now that I boot my phone it goes through magldr like normal but loaded zimage, says: load done ...123456 GOGOGO
Then it boots up into CWM recovery.. I tried to install the zip from here and it formats the boot and the system like normal... then copy's all the files to system. The install completes like normal. Then I reboot and it goes right back into CWM recovery. I have tried to flash other roms.. but now my phone wont active sync with my computer. I can only mount it. Any help would be amazing at this point. I have been troubleshooting this brick for the past 5 hours..
Thanks in advance for any help
I'm assuming i will have to start from scratch with wm 6.1... if so how would i flash the os to the phone is my phone doesnt sync with wmdc?

Yes, u should flash magldr 1.13, not magldr 1.11 because it will give stuck at GoGoGo. U need to enter bootloader to flash magldr 1.13.
Edit:sorry my bad. 1.11 wont give u stuck at gogogo, but flash 1.13 this time.
Do you actually know what you're doing? Your phone is most certainly not bricked. WMDC is useless once you don't have WinMo on your phone. I think the problem is your radio. Download and flash the 2.15.50.14 radio. It's the newest one. Then flash away and it should work. If not, task 29, reflash MAGLDR and then flash your ROM from clockwork.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Ok i got the new mglrd and radio.. now when you tell me to flash the rom from cwm.. you mean from zip right?
ok so I installed from zip and the phone booted up into CWM yet again. Telling me that it failed to find cache/recovery/command, cache/recovery/log.
Failed to find cache partition to mount to cache.
I did update the radio and mglrd like you said.
I had the same problem I task 29'd it then flashed the build via splash mode
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Just do the following
Below was taken from Tyween "TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 RC2+ v2.8.0"
1. Task 29
2. Flash Radio(2.15 Recommended)
3. MAGLDR 1.13
4. ClockworkMod Recovery v1.3 135M System/44M Cache/Recovery v3.0.1.9
5. Install TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 .zip with CWM
What i would do is download a stock rom, it will probably come as a single .exe file. rename the extension from .exe to .7z (if you have 7zip, im sure u can name it to what ever archieve program u have) then extract it. find the signed.nbh file and extract that. Then rename LEOIMG.nbh and put on root of sd card. power off phone and while booting hold the volume down button and the power button till you get the bootloader screen... follow prompts and then you are back to a stock hd2
I got it running now thanks for all the help guys. I just flashed a stock rom and changed the radio.

try this:
1) ensure you have magldr 1.13 loaded
2) boot into CWM
3) Do a wipe
4) re-download the ROM zip file (you could have gotten it corrupted somehow on the download)
5) put it on your SD card, load up CWM, flash choose.zip and find your ROM
6) after the flash do another wipe on CWM
7) restart your phone and from magldr load android from nand
edit: lol nvm, apparently I didn't see there was a page 2. Good job on gettin it running

you're really telling him to go back to full stock, with stock spl, that's not necessary, if he has hardspl already, he doesn't have to go thru that again, task 29 will remove all traces causing issues, so all he needs is task 29, radio 2.15.50.14, MGLDR, CWM with the proper partition, and flash desired rom from clockwork.

Wow I cant believe this worked. You have 2 recoveries, MAGLDR and CLK. So one would think you use the CLK rom with the CLK recovery, and the MAG rom with the MAG recover.
NOPE!!
You use MAG rom on CLK recovery. Jesus christ I spent 3 hours on this.

HD2 problem with flashing CWM

Hi.
My friend has HTC HD2 and we wanted to flash CWM and new nadroid.
The phone has already HSPL 2.08, MAGLDR 1.13 and radio 15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14.
In the phone there is android (Android 2.2, kernel 2.6.32.15 dirty cotulla, software number 2.29.405.5).
phone (in info): HTC Desire A8181
I tried flash CWM 150MB but:
1.) DAF doesn't work for me (error init USB). So I tried andr_install.exe, it worked and phone was connected
, but then it show message:
PARTITION LAYOUT NEW
Do you want to preserve data?
Press POWER to save it
Press GREEN to clear it
Press VOLDOWN to abandon flashing
I tried abandon flashing and I get error (something like can't clear partition)
We want to flash HyperDroid CM7.
So My question is, did I make something wrong?
Must I make repartition of MAGLDR befor flash CWM or CM?
I would to try HD2 NAND toolkit, but I looked, that it use also DAF.
I would try a full wipe (task29) in HD2 Toolkit.
But if it not work, we will have cleaned phone
Can I do this?
Repartition of MAGLDR to 150MB, catch 44MB.
Run CWM from SD card.
Install CWM from SD card to NAND (recovery_5.0.2.6_leo_CWR.zip)?
When you repartition, it installs cwm too.
Use the nand toolkit, put phone into magldr USB flasher, in nand toolkit select tye size you want, clik 'reaprtition' bottom left, hey presto partitions created and cwm installed. If you get connection errors click download drivers. (Alternate means of getting the correct drivers are - install 'myphoneexplorer ((also good cos it syncs with outlook)) or install the android sdk (Google for android USB drivers).
The reason you got the errors trying to flash cwm in post 1 is because the old method used to install your original rom doesn't create a recovery partition, so there's nowhere for cwm to install.
OK I will try it
I have already google drivers (from ADB)+HTC drivers (I have EVO 3D)+I installed windows mobile device center.
But andr_install.exe worked, so I hope that toolkit will work too
Thank you!
Android reflashed!
It worked really well, thank you!

[Q] Cant get into recovery, re-install under Linux?

I have flashed several roms using CLW already and it always worked fine, but now I'm really stuck.
The problem is that I installed the Hyperdroid CM7 rom. It worked fine. But when I wanted to install the Google Apps I just couldn't get into the recovery mode from the MAGLDR menue anymore. It just says "ERROR ERROR: Cannot read ramdisk image". I tried to update the CLW using the Rom Manager but it didn't solve my problem. Unfortunatelly I also can't boot the rom anymore now (I can't since I formated the SD card).
Can I now just install CLW again (over the existing version) with the "USB Flasher" option from the boot menue? Or can I repair the installed version somehow?
Is there a way of installing CLW under Linux? I've tried using WINE to run the daf.exe but it didn't work since it couldn't find the the usb connection.
Which would be the preffered method of installing roms NAND roms with Linux?
Thanks for any help in advance!

ROM Manager isn't compatible with MAGLDR, which is probably why your phone was messed up when you tried to use it. It only works if you use the cLK bootloader. As for your problem, I really can't see much else you can do other than fresh installing CWM through USB Flasher. I don't use Linux so I can't help you there, sorry.
Oh, I wasn't aware that MAGDLR isn't compatible with the ROM manager because it came with the MAGDRL/CWM rom i flashed. But thanks for that information!
Can I just install CWM "over" the allready installed but not existing version? Or will that cause even mor eproblems?

I think that would be fine, there isn't much point in Task29ing unless you are having major issues.
Ok,so since I couldn't get hold of a windows PC yet I couldn't re-install clockwork flashing with USB cabel.
But I couldn't load CWM recovery from SD card as described in this post #4 of this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352395
I was not able install the CWM then in the second step form zip file on the SD card. Some error message appeared, but I was able to flash a ROM. So my CWM is still broken, but the ROM is working fine which is ok for me now. When I get access to a Windows PC I'll re-flash CWM too.
So the "Linux problem" isn't solved but anyone experiencing problems to get into recovery from MAGDRLR menu should try the way in the above mentioned post.

Glad to hear it You aren't putting CWM 5.0.2.6 SD as a zip on your SD card by any chance are you? Because you need to extract it to your SD, I misread it first time around and was quite confused as to how that worked as a .zip file.
