Flash 10.2 to offer hardware video acceleration and REAL integration! - Xoom General

Hardware accelerated video presentation for H.264 (Android 3.0.1+ only)
Flash Player 10.2 leverages the Stage Video rendering pipeline to enable users of Android 3.0 tablets, like the MOTOROLA XOOM™, to enjoy smooth playback of high-definition Flash video content on the web. Users will experience reduced CPU usage and higher frame rates for existing H.264 video content.
Deeper integration with the Android browser rendering engine (Android 3.0.1+ only)
Deeper integration of Flash Player and the enhanced Android 3.0 browser delivers faster and better rendering of rich, interactive web content resulting in a browsing experience similar to the desktop.
Flash Player can now render content as part of the web page along with other components such as HTML, images and gif animation. As a result, users will experience:
Improved scrolling of web pages;
Uncompromised viewing of rich, immersive content in the way intended by the page designer, including support for instances where HTML and other web content is composited over Flash Player rendered content. Flash Player rendered content will continue to be placed in a separate window on top of HTML in the Android 2.2 and 2.3 browsers, as these browsers do not support the new Android 3.0 browser rendering model.

Finally, an android flash plugin that integrates fully... this sounds a lot better than the 10.1 implementation that would slow down the browser considerably.

I hope they keep the same options to turn Flash on and off...

Do you get the option to turn on flash content only on demand? rather than all the time. Cause i found this option on my nexus and it really cut out all browser lag i had.

Definitely good news. I can't wait to check out Amazon's video on demand. $80 a year for unlimited rentals, free 2 day air shipping, $5 next day air shipping, and free release date delivery for games? Sounds like a deal over Netflix if they've got the content!

I'm going to give PlayOn a try this weekend with the Epic, in preparation for the Xoom getting Flash on Friday. It's worth it to me to spend $40 a year (the first year; $20/year thereafter) and get access to Netflix, Xoom, and a great deal of other video on both my Epic and my Xoom.

Returned my Xoom =[.

I returned my Xoom yesterday to Best Buy( No Re-Stocking Fee) in Prep for the iPad2.
Sadly, the ONLY reason i'm returning is because of Tegra2 and it's depressing ability for High Profile video.
Kind of crazy all I really need is a great multimedia experience and my Xoom just wasn't it! So many foreclosure's if I have even 3-4 Tab's open in the browser.

Owned 2 Archos products in my day.. Very mediocre cheap products compared to the rest. iPad 2 is my best bet for now. Obviously alot will hate on my decision but it's clearly the best "Tablet" as of now. Hopefully I will be able to re-enter the HoneyComb seen shortly as I love the potential.

Both my wife and I have the Xoom. And we rarely get force closes if at all. The video complaint I can kinda understand but:
A.) How many 1080p movies can you fit on a Xoom or any mobile device anyway
B.) I am super confident it will be taken care by a Dev or Google itself
I will never go back to ios. A screen full of icons is so 1990s

I owned an iPad for 10 months. I got my Xoom on day 1. With all of the Xoom's temporary shortcomings, I'd pick it over the iPad any day. Personally I feel that the iPad 2 is a joke - definately not worth upgrading from iPad to iPad2. It's like when the iPhone 3g got upgraded to the 3gs. Laughable!

A) Very True. But, I should be able to easily fit 720P video and/or be able to get software that can decode for me correct? Having to convert manually will never be a solution in 2011 for me to play on a Tablet.
B) This is Theory.
I do want to multi-task I actually sold my iPad for the Xoom; because I have all Android phones*.
I love the screen full of iCons once customized. I think this is also opinion. I love BOTH Android and iOS. But "Honeycomb" just isn't ready for the public. And we don't know how long untill we get updated officially. I root my device's but don't like to really tweak to much. So, even if a XDA hack solution is available I and the common folk won't use it.
The Xoom is sexy and I F*(&*(& Miss it like HELL right now!!!
But, I remember how easy it was to just upload a dam 720P Starcraft2 video from YouTube downloader.
Quite funny as to why you actually went for Xoom in first place?
Just read 1 of the article & it actually sums up entire Tablet war....
1)Various so called websites{Engadget--funded by Steve Restriction Jobs & others} complaints are glitches, battery life, and slowdowns. Yes, glitches and slowdowns are there. Do they ruin/hinder the experience at all? Heck no. People fail to realize that Android Honeycomb is a much more sophisticated interface than iOS. When you take into account everything Android does over iOS (widgets, customization, live wallpapers, true multitasking, better web browsing etc.), of course battery life and performance will take small hits. But in the grand scheme of things, Android has improved tenfold from Android 1.0 and performs amazingly well for everything it does. iOS is an app driven interface, which isn’t a bad thing, but the user has no freedom to customize the device to make it their own. The experience gets boring for someone who has used iDevices for a few years now. If you took a tech blogger’s iPad and compared it to a random 80-year old grandmother’s iPad, they would nearly look identical. But if you took my Xoom and compared it to anyone else’s in the world, I guarantee they would look completely different.
2)It isn’t fair to compare the performance of Android Honeycomb to iOS for previously stated reasons. I get a laugh when a tech journalist “compares” Android Honeycomb to iOS and says Honeycomb isn’t as fast and continues on to crown iOS/the iPad 2 like it’s perfect. Someone who reviews technology for a living should make it clear that Android has much more going on at any given time compared to iOS.
3)Another funny thing I see people say a lot is the Motorola Xoom/Android Honeycomb will never be as popular as the iPad 2/iOS. Uhh, okay? Why does it matter to YOU which one is more popular? Use both, see which one you like more, and go with it. Android Honeycomb will catch on and so will the Motorola Xoom. They aren’t aimed at the same audiences. Apple markets the iPad as this magical, cute, family friendly device while the Xoom is marketed as this totally bad ass, rugged machine that can turn into a spaceship if you try to grab it.
This guy has just summed up the entire Android 3.0 Honeycomb story.
iPad an oversized ipod Touch Tablet
I'm not a fanboy but can someone please explain to me why it's so difficult to play Video on this thing? Can someone also explain why the browser crashes? My device wasn't rooted but it would crash if it had to many tab's open and when I moved to quickly between them. Completely stock with only CNN tablet app installed.
What i'm saying is I paid 847$ for this. I expect it to just play the standard of HD Video. If it cannot handle this standard, you will have to decode the video specifically to this standard. Some as you see on the forums are still having this issue with certain solutions.
This iPad as a ex user didn't have these issues with video. So ofcourse the iPad2 will improve. BUT I feel the Xoom is better hardware so the problem is "how" long will the wait of fix be? I then see an Update that doesn't even list anything about Flash, SD Card Support, but a Time fix?

Disappointed with my Xoom !

Hi Guys,
I am a big Android fan. I have Droid X and bought the Xoom the first day it came out. Was very happy with my Xoom untill my brother got the new IPAD2. It's lighter, thinner and the screen blows the Xoom screen, The Xoom screen colors are washed out, if you open the same image on both ipad and Xoom you will understand what I am talking about , its the contrast ratio ! I paid $800 plus tax for a device with mediocre screen and below average contrast ratio ! That's why Apple will stay the best and the top company as they don't compromise their quality and now even their price is unbeatable.
Also it was a big surprise that all the websites I browsed worked better on the Ipad browser. Engadget, Android central, and Cnet websites worked perfectly including the embedded Videos and I don't know how the video is playing while the Ipad does not have flash ? Managed to play the videos on my Xoom using the new flash 10.2 but it is not as clear and smooth and high resolutions as the ipad.
Friendly Facebook for ipad blows any Android app I ever seen, all other Apps including the new Weather bug for Honeycomb is not as good as the Ipads. Only the Pulse app is almost the same on both platforms.
Even though the Xoom resolution is higher, everything on the ipad looks smoother and much better with brilliant colors.
Now, I am not sure what is the thing that I can do with the Xoom and can't do it using the ipad. To be Frank I went back and checked my receipt to return the Xoom and buy an ipad but unfortunately I passed the 14 days return policy for Best Buy.
I wont sell it in Craigslist and loose some money, its a good tablet but I should not look at the ipad screen as it really irritates me.
Please drop a line with your thoughts
Regards

When you sell 15 million iPads in 9 months and over 100 million iphones, websites generally will make sure their content plays kindly with your devices. All of those websites detect if you are on an iPad and display content that works well on the ipad (HTML5 video for example). Some websites go into a special ipad tablet mode when you go to them. I think the NYT does this. That is why Steve Jobsy says flash is unnecessary, because he has 115 million devices in the wild and he knows websites will do what they can to accommodate those users instead of potentially missing out on that giant block of traffic. That will not be changing this year when the iPad2 really takes off either.
Yup and frankly speaking HTML5 is much better as videos looked much better than our flash with less battery consumption and very smooth scrolling.
But the question is I thought that Honeycomb supports HTML 5 , so why we can't play the videos without flash and just like the ipad ?

Sell it and get an iPad. Get what makes you happy. I'm fortunate, my wife and I currently have iPad 1s and I'm selling both of them. My wife is getting a new iPad 2 and I have a new Xoom. This way we have both in our house and I can use an ipad 2 whenever I feel like it (its actually my account so all my apps are on there anyway ).
Reality is, this religious war people have is freaking ridiculous. Just buy whatever makes you happy. One thing to note though about market share, last year when the iPhone 4 came out it blew away every Android phone on the market in benchmarks, specs, screen, apps, etc. and Apple was dominating the smartphone market.
Guess who's leading the smartphone market with leaps and bounds 1 year later?

HTML5 video works on Android 2.3, however I don't know about Honeycomb. I set my user agent to iPad with Dolphin Browser HD and HTML5 video worked perfectly.
Edit: You don't even have to do this. Just try HTML5 only video websites. I assume the same should apply to Honeycomb as well, if not that would be odd... I don't think I'm going to be using Flash for a while actually, as long as the site supports HTML5.

The videos plays using the Xoom video player in a new full size page which is fine but still not like the ipad that can play the embedded video within the same page with a full screen option.
But if I enable the plugin it will use flash even if I choose Ipad agent.

I would hardly call the iPad 2 a quality built device:

After seeing all the pics in that thread, and hearing that Apple Geniuses are telling people that all iPad 2's do this so it's normal, I wouldn't pay a hundred bucks for one. It's obvious from that thread just why the iPad has a good price. Apple used cheap parts and POOR quality control. I considered an iPad 2 to go with my Xoom, but not now...it's crap.
You sure that isn't just a manufacture error that will be fixed?

I have both the Xoom & the iPad 2, and to be honest, I'm using the iPad 2 a lot more than the Xoom, design wise they both have their pros and cons, same thing with hardware and build quality, I do however like the design of the Xoom a bit more and i like the feel more than the iPad just seems like its better put together to me. As for the power button on the Xoom, I'm not sure why people hate it, coming from the Viewsonic Gtab & a variety of other chinese tablets I think the button is great, I've never accidently hit it before. Anyways, I've got my Xoom about 3 days after it launched and only played with it for about 2 days max, cause frankly the apps just aren't there yet since it is a new device after all and there are still lots of bugs to work out this I understand. I've never owned the original iPad and was on the fence about the iPad 2 until I saw the specs for it, the dual core processor was what sold me on the iPad 2. Since getting it on launch day, I haven't been able to put it down, great device (yes, i hate the stupid iPhone UI) but the apps are years a head of the android apps, I love tinkering and customizing my devices with custom roms etc, but I find for daily use right now, the iPad 2 is a much better device since it has so much app support right now. Of course this could all change in about 6-12 months when more developers make apps for Honeycomb. Still, I find the overall quality of iPad apps/iPhone apps are better than android apps. My only gripe with the iPad is the crappy screen resolution on the iPad, sure the IPS screen has better viewing angles then the Xoom screen, but when you're looking straight at it you can tell the Xoom screen looks much sharper because of the resolution, if only Apple increased the screen resolution.
Anyways, both great devices but like I said the only thing that sucks on the Xoom is the app support right now which should be fixed in a few months once more devices are available. Totally different platforms, anyways, in my opinion the Xoom probably wont do 1/10th of the iPad sales just because the mass market wont get this device. Cause at this moment the iPad 2 is a much better functioning device, browsing is easier, and smoother, no (atleast I haven't had one) forced closes, it just seems like a more complete device for the mass market and I really think apple is smart for having their tiered pricing. So don't expect any SD card slot or anythign like that, cause if they do add an SD Card slot, then there is no incentive for people to buy the 64GB version.

Well who knows? But more than a few users have commented in that thread saying the ipad 1 had the same issue but to a lesser degree and that apple never did fix it. They are now seriously worried that they won't fix it this time either. Look how apple reacted to the iphone 4 antenna issue. Maybe they should stop looking at the ipad2 that way At any rate I'm not risking my time and money on a device with a screen that looks like that.

Video Playback.

I'd like to make a comparison in video playback before I preorder mine mine tomorrow.
I have one particular video in mind
Zenith Part 1 Sample mkv. It can be found via thepiratebay (official destributer, its free and legal, the video I mean, as well as the full version of it.) But you can find it elsewhere (their own website) if you have a problem with TPB.
The galaxy tab struggles to play the sample in VPlayer and refuses in the stock player to even try. I get screen glitching and slowness if it doesn't just crash.
Would someone be willing to download it (33MB) sample and comment?
Thanks.

playback is very slow. audio plays at a normal speed. used mobo for the video app.
Thanks for the test. I just tried mono on my grab plays slow but no screen glitching like my other player. I had to use soft decoding though. Unsupported by system player.
It seems video playback is no better than the gtab.
Hopefully its atleast similar I'm happy with that much.

I tried it, but because I'm using the Galaxy Tab as a comparison here, it's build in codecs don't support the sample video format and so can't play it.
You may want to wait for Samsung's upcoming GalaxyS tablets that are coming in June. Their GalaxyS phones are the only ones I know of with out-of-the-box great MP4, MKV, Xvid, and WMV support. My Xoom doesn't play a vast majority of videos that my GalaxyS Vibrant does. Presumably the GalaxyS tablets will have similar abilities.

You may want to wait for Samsung's upcoming GalaxyS tablets that are coming in June. Their GalaxyS phones are the only ones I know of with out-of-the-box great MP4, MKV, Xvid, and WMV support. Thanks for the info. So do we have solid dates and/or specs for hte GalaxyS tablets? I don't have the kind of patience to wait two more months unless i can clearly see £600 on the XOOM next week is wasted.

I really don't want another TouchWiz device, so I'm out as far as the Samsung's go. Any up-coming google devices? I want pure honeycomb, looks like the scales are tipping back in favour of the XOOM.

From the videos at CTIA, it's even lighter than TouchWiz3, but I can understand wanting a pure flavor of Honeycomb. That said, any pure Honeycomb ("with Google") very, very likely will not have direct, out of the box support for MKV (See: Nexus S vs Galaxy S).
That said, I know Acer and LG are coming out with some Honeycomb tablets, as well as Sony and HTC. Pretty much all "by Summer". The only one with a set date is the Sammy.
At this point, I think the Xoom is going to be the only customization-free tablet of the bunch. Until it gets a firmware update to fix the slow rendering and video playback though, it's *very* hard for me to recommend it though. I may well be returning my own in the coming days.

If it were the Nexus One of Tablets, I'd have no problem, at least we could count on the updates from Google and know it won't get dropped. But with Moto in the mix, I don't trust them to get us any updates let alone keep them going for a decent period.
I feeling now that I may end up getting one anyway and replacing it after the summer. Mainly because I'm impatient, and so far all my impatience costs me is money.

Personal Xoom versus Ipad

Well. have had my xoom for around a week.
Little frustrated with some of the non function, Flash is slow and no SD however. operation wise it does everything I throw at it. Happy. Anyway these aren't avail on the Ipad sooo what am I going to do.
My wife came home last night with a Ipad 2 3G.
First things. Grabbing it the perception is the xoom is smaller. Weight wise can't tell. Both feel equall from weight wise.
Screen on the Ipad is brighter but grainer than the xoom.
Powering on.
Hit the ipad power button, powers on shortly and insist it need to be connected to a computer, no bypass. Plug it in and it needs iTunes. What!
Install itunes and get it online.
Done. Strange, Ipad only needs to be connected for like 1 sec before it is activated. Sure this could have been done over Wireless.
UI feels more constrained than the Xoom. usage difference are mainly due to what I am used to. Ipad Keyboard is a pain, have to start changing all our passwords because mixed numbers is frustrating. Xoom is easier to type on, both numbers and also touch typing.
Speed. Ipad has very smooth transitions however task switching, navigation, apps etc are way faster on the xoom. Backwards and forwards, homescreen, etc. With honeycomb there is no competition.
First thing we tried to do was copy some photo's onto the Ipad. Copy them onto a SD card and use the adpater. Nup. Browse to out website, nup. In the end installed photosync and now working.
However my wife will love the Ipad as I love the Xoom.
This morning my 2 year old has already sussed out to open an audio book and is listening to the gruffilo story. That in itself might say something.
I get my xoom today, and play with it for 4-5 hours. Honestly, i saw a lot of force close in web browser/ market, flash 10.2 doesn't work...but i believe those issue will be fixed by update next version of honeycomb in near future. Of course, i love my xoom.

Flash does work...you have to download it from the market. Also, if you are bold enough to root and install a custom kernel, the SD card slot is also functional.
After my loooong research on the ipad 2 vs xoom, Im buying my xoom tomorrow just sharing lol

- when i say "work" i mean it has to work at least 90-95% in all cases. Flash 10.2 on honeycomb can't approach that rate. i tested a lot of website this afternoon, watched a lot of flash video on my xoom, and i can only hear the sound or extremely choppy. However, flash 10.2 on my mytouch 4g, galasy s, even hd2- running android is far better than that.
- There is no custom room right now so i don't think i need to enable sdcard function. BTW, 32GB is enough for me.
Ye have a couple ipads here and one is for my 3 year old. I had to get her one after she figured out how to play angry birds Rio now she knows how to navigate net Flickr and watch kid moves and TV shows she even downloads games its crazy.... oh I have a zoom too and she can't figure it out lol

Ty for your review this makes me feel a bit better about my decision to get a xoom next month...and as far as weight I was wondering bc a lot of people out there say "The Xoom is way heaver then the ipad 2" and that may be true, but does it feel super mega pushing a boulder up a hill heavy like people seem to be claiming?

No it does not feel like a super mega anything up a hill. People that say that should get out from behind the capacitive screens more often. Google the actual weight difference. Its very close. I have a wifi xoom and my girl has a ipad2. My xoom feels more solid than her ipad2. And she hates it when I show her different home screen layouts or transfer something from my SD card. I just tell her that "uncle" Steve says its ok.

That should be Apple's marketing strategy. "So easy a 3 year old can run it! And seniors too!"
Only force close i've had is from the facebook widget everytime i click on it... no force closes anywhere else, i'll use the browser more tomorrow on some flash intensive sites and see what happens

I've had my 3G Xoom since day 1. This is my One month and then some Review.
I've found the Flash usage on sites in terms of both video, audio and animation content to be pretty damn smooth.
Sadly certain sites refuse to work with the stock browser most notable Channel4.com/4od and tvcatchup.com.

Flash does work at least 90-95% of the time.. It may lag a bit if the site is flash heavy along with bunch of ads. But it gets better once you zoom on the flash video that you actually wanna watch. I pad can't do that. Also, my mytouch4g can't play any song on mixcrate.com, but my xoom can. So I wouldn't really say that my mytouch4g's flash is better than my xooms.

On the topic of the flash "issues". When I first got my xoom flash was sketchy at best. But once I rooted and blocked ads, I haven't had a problem.
P.s. having an sd card is great.

Single core 1 ghz Thunderbolt vs Dual Core EEE pad running flash

Why in gods name does my phone run flash about twice as fast as this vaunted dual core nvidia processor? Honeycomb 3.1 should blow gingerbread away (leaked build).
Is there some kind of bug or something?
I'm not a scientist or anything but I'm guessing the fact that it's rendering nearly three times as many pixels across a 12" screen running a new version of Android that hasn't been fully optimized for the hardware yet might have something to do with it...
I guess it could be a bug if by bug you mean perfectly normal and fully expected when early adopting new hardware / software concepts. If you'd like it to be a more polished solution like the iPad just disable flash and tada super great browsing experience. If you want it to do what no other system with its specs can do you can probably expect a few developmental hiccups.
Different devices will run differently. My wifes htc Legend runs much better than my htc Legend and she had Android 2.1, while I was running the "super fast" Cyanogenmod with Froyo... now that was a let down! LOL
Are there tasks that your Transformer does that TOO SLOW? Everything that I do seems to be quite snappy, but I guess it depends what you are doing.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
are you comparing fullscreen playback or native rez in the browser. if fullscreen then yes the asus is rendering A LOT more pixels.
also keep in mind that video playback is not the most effective use of dual processors. yes it's probably multithreaded but only to split video from audio and perhaps bufferring. Video decoding itself is rarely successfully performed on multiple threads. So you have 1 1ghz core decoding the video and the other buffering and decoding audio(just a guess). That really doesn't give the dual core a huge advantage over the single core.
Never use Flash as a benchmark when comparing the performance of different chipsets. It's not the fault of NVIDIA that Adobe is incredibly slow to optimize their products for the latest hardware. Honeycomb is still a new product as well, so there's a good chance that some of the problem is on Google's end as well.
Chill out and have some patience.
To piggyback...is there a way to set a preference of HTML video rather than flash, and only use flash as a fallback? Maybe that should be another thread.

HTML5 video is handled by the servers of whatever website you're visiting, not on the tablet itself. To better your chances that the servers will default to HTML5 video when visiting them, you can change your user agent to Tablet or Mobile-phone. But if the site was built exclusively using Flash, there is no way to force it to render in HTML5.
http://www.androidbugle.com/2011/05/flash-103-performance-test.html
Check out the video I did comparing Flash performance on 3 different chipsets.
I believe HTC and Qualcomm worked together to optimized Flash out of the box for the stock browser.
The 1GHz Second Gen Snapdragon in the HTC Incredible S (same as in Thunderbolt) spanked every other phone I tested (including the Tegra 2 powered Atrix).

I can change my ipad's browser agent and still default to HTML 5 video..well specifically embedded YouTube videos.

And the Youtube app runs on HTML5, on both Android and iOS. The difference between the two is that embedded Youtube in the browser in iOS utilizes a plugin from the Youtube app to allow the HTML5 stream to play, whereas in Android the browser defaults to Flash for embedded Youtube content, and will only play in HTML5 if you choose to open the video in the external Youtube app. That's Google's way of allowing you to keep your options open.

What's your point? Did you read my initial question? There's no need to act like a snot.
Let's rephrase this.
For sites that have been optimized for HTML 5 video playback, is there a way to force that to load first, while retaining flash as a fallback option? If I set my iPad browser to desktop it still chooses HTML 5 video playback, so there must be something going on besides browser identification string, otherwise it would show a missing plugin icon.

If you set your browser to an ipad user agent, you will get HTML5 videos in place of flash, but none of them seem to work OR very few will load in the native video player - nothing like the ipad experience, but it semi-works...

I am thinking this is the case... Anyone know if kernel source being released can fix this issue?
It s a well known fact that flash is not optimized for tablets. I forgot what article I saw it in, I think it was engadget and the CEO verbally bypassed that specific question. Another item is the real estate on a tablet compared to a phone..alot more ...a hell of alot more..depending on how your user agent is set up and also what type of gpu is on it. I had to revert on my nook flash 10.1 because they took out hardware acceleration for it in 10.2+. If you do a full screen mode on a phone or even smaller...it is fantastic..do that on a tablet...it is okay.
If you're having the issue with the stock browser, try DolphinHD. It does media streaming better than the stock usually.
I also noticed that my G2 at 1.5ghz can almost match my TF at 1.6Ghz in Linpack.
Imagine 2 higher clocked processors getting matched by 1 lower clocked cpu.
I think the Snapdragon is simply better.
