Ok so I was trying to upgrade to MGLDR 1.13 so I could use the new Typhoon CWM ROM. But something's gone wrong and Idk what it is. The phone goes straight to MGLDR 1.12 on boot, but none of the USB options work. In the tri color screen the USB option doesn't work either.

really? your first response is to get him to pay you money?
no. you cannot say it is not bricked.
start over. flash via sdcard back to WM. then make sure you have correct radio, correct magldr and go from there.
also - try different usb ports on your computer. also, look around if you have Windows7 as i thought i remember some things about it acting weird.

All I had to do was restart the PC and it worked from there. The MAGLDR had messed up the USB drivers
fantastic, mate.

No your Pbone is not bricked if you could not even get it to come on it would be bricked. what bricks a HD2 most of the time is flashing a radio thst is not supported by it, and this is only a problem with the TMOUS HD2. The other reason is poeple are carless when flashing and don't have enough charge on their battery to prevent it com dieing in the middke of a flash, or some how let the USB cble become diconnected in the middle of a flash.
Try to flash a Windows Mobile ROM from SD card. you can do an official ROM or a custom ROM. If you flash an official ROM it will remove MAGLDR and replace your HSPL with SPL so your HD2 will be totally stock. To do this download the ROM of your choose if it is a .executive you need to change it to .zip (if it is a custom ROM you probably will not have to do this)and right click it then cboose view/explore and find the RUU_signed.nbh (a custom ROM may not say exactly that but it will have a .nbh file) rename it to leoimg.nbh and copy it to yourS D card.
Insert your SD card into your pbone, while off hold down the vomume down button and tap the power button but keep the volume down button held until bootloader comes up and says searching then leg go of the volume down button and the ROM will flash.

no, what you meant was, i won't give any help but i'll offer to take your money to fix a problem that likely doesn't exist. if you are able to fix phones the way you say you are, then you have the knowledge of what a brick is or isn't. then you would have known this wasn't a brick. so i can only extrapolate you were trying to take advantage of the OP in hopes of making a quick buck.
beyond not cool.
OP,
First of, ignore simon. He's out to make a quick buck regardless of what he says. He's going to run around telling every Tom **** and Harry that his RIFF box will cure their problems. It likely will, but that's like a doctor telling a patient that he'll prescribe him morphine for his tummy ache.
Next, I'd recommend trying the following steps and we'll take it from there. Change each of the recommended items below ONE AT A TIME so you know which is the culprit.
1) Change the USB Cable.
2) Change the USB Cable + Change the USB port that was used. Ideally, you'd want a direct connection. That is, do not go through any cheap USB hubs, etc. If it's a desktop, make sure it goes straight to the motherboard's USB ports on the rear.
3) Change USB Cable + USB Port + computer used. If it's not possible, make it possible. Find a friend who has a laptop or something.
Now, by the off chance that your usb port does get working in the tri-color screen again (i.e., it changes from SERIAL to USB), first thing you do is perform a TASK29 (search for it) on the HD2. This will wipe the phone clean and even remove MAGDLR. You want to use the TASK29 that DOES NOT REMOVE YOUR RADIO. I repeat, there are two types of TASK29 for the HD2. One removes the radio during the reformat, and the other doesn't. Be sure to take the LATTER.
If you can reach this point, don't reinstall MAGDLR and ANDROID first. Let us know the steps you took the last time so we can correct you on what you did erroneously the first time around.
But don't worry too much OP, if you can still get the tri-colored screen, I don't think it's a brick yet. If I'm not mistaken, a full-brick won't even allow you to get into a tri-colored screen? Whatever you do, for the time being, DO NOT FLASH ANY RADIOS.
Lastly, what is the current radio version?

Hi, first post on the forum so please be gentle with me....
I have an XDA Orbit 2 which was until last Thursday working fine with the last official upgrade from O2 (Win 6.1, no idea about all the other stuff).
Whilst using the phone last week it suddenly died in the middle of a conversation. It wouldn't power on at all. I took out the battery, waited a couple of minutes, put the battery back in and switched it on. All that happened was the phone displayed the 4 colour screen with "POLA200 SPL-3.13.0000 CPLD-2" in the red section and "Serial" in the white. I repeated the battery removal exercise a few times, waiting for increasing lengths of time but nothing changed.
I had a fairly long search through the forum and have tried for a few hours now going through the various fixes suggested but I am getting nowhere.
It won't hard reset, all that happens is the message "No Image Found" appears for a very short time and I then get stuck on the 4 coloured screen with the message above.
The same thing happens if I try just putting the thing in bootloader mode.
I can't use any of the official O2 rom upgrades as the phone because all the PCs I've tried connecting to it won't recognise it over a USB link.
I've tried connecting to it using mtty, again on several PCs, but I just get a message "USB port can not open". Just in case I've uninstalled Activesync on one PC and got the same answer.
The "how to flash you polaris using the microSD card" originally looked useful but I have some problems with it.
The first is that I need HardSPL installing on the device, which I can't do because I can't get to it.
The second will be down to me not knowing where to look, but I can't find a ROM to download and copy to the microSD card as POLAIMG.nbh. I did manage to find a Win6.5 one (the HTC Polaris - PDaviet rom wm6.5 manilla 2d (core 23004) by tranminhman one) which I thought I'd try. I guess the idea was that if I could just get something working I could always reflash it again with a different ROM or maybe apply the o2 upgrade. Unfortunately the image was password protected and I couldn't find the password in the thread.
I'm kind of at a loss now so any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Hey,
Sorry i can't help much you'll need to do a lot of reading and troubleshooting...usually it's the onyl way to solve it by trying all options.
I'm just posting this message to bump it up in this forum, but more importantly you should be posting in the Iolite section for help with that specific device especially if you're trying other ROMs.
Also if it died on you and you haven't begun to flash it, can't you send it to the service for them to fix it for you? That way you can rule out any hardware malfunction.
Best of luck!
Alan
Did you do soft reset

Bit in bold er... cant quite understand why in iolite section as the xda orbit 2 is the rebrand htc touch cruise => htc touch find. Its in the right place.
On the side of what to do i the ony thing i can think of would be mtty and if that didnt work then try to reflash the official o2 6.1 release and see what happens when you try to do it.
You cant try to install any 3rd party roms they jsut wont flash as you dont have hard spl installed and cant do that until you have it running again.
Try the above and see what happens...
Hi Nik
I have tried just about every kind of reset, nothing has worked.
Hi Alan
If I can't get it sorted any other way I'll probably send it off somewhere but I'd like to have a go at fixing it myself. It will at least be a bit of fun!
I take then that I've posted this in the wrong forum. Oops, apologies.

Hi jon,
Conclusion from post 1,
1) Uncompleted flash with new ROM or hardware problem (half way die)
2) Unsuccessful flash Hard SPL (cannot see Olinex 2.2 wording during bootloader)
3) Your PC & PDA fail to connect via USB (serial wording appear during bootloader)
Try this method,
1) Get shipped ROM from HTC web site, key in your country & serial behind battery
1a) Extract shipped ROM by WinRAR , take RUU Signed.nbh
2) Rename to POLAIMG.nbh put inside SD card, "flash using SD card"
3) Make sure your battery power more than 50% cause it take about 2 hours
Good luck, my friend

Try to get official HTC ROM here, Select WWE (405) CID_001 for your country.
Good luck my friend
have u tried this?...
turn off, pull out the battery, then put it back, charge ur phone till the battery indicators shows green (which mean it's already fully charged) then... power on ur device.
it looks like a dumb suggestion , but... i have had a same situation
(HTC KAISER, not Polaris).
if it doesn't work, then try to upgrade with a POLAIMG.nbh (take it from official HTC ROM)
in a 2G FAT32 microSD root directory.

Much appreciated.
Downloaded the ROM as suggested, unzipped to the SD card, renamed the image to POLAIMG.nbh, stuck it in the phone and things got slightly more interesting.
In bootloader mode I now get a bit further. I get a grey screen which says "Loading ..." then "Checking...." then "00028002 Not allow". It then goes back to the four coloured screen as before.
However, does the fact that it is trying to read something mean that I have just got the wrong file?
I'll try a few more and see what happens.
Thanks once again, your help is greatly appreciated.
Jon
Hi oza
Yep tried all the battery pulling out stuff but got nowhere.
The ROM thing on the SD card gets further. I extracted the ROM from the official O2 upgrade, stuck it on the card and renamed it POLAIMG.nbh.
If I put the phone in Bootloader mode I now get even further than before. I get a grey screen with:-
POLAIMG.nbh -
RADIO_V2 -
BOOTLOADER -
SPLASH1 -
OS -
Press power button to start update image
Press action button to cancel update image
If I press the power button
I get an "Update In Progress" message and a progress bar.
After about 4 minutes I get a full progress bar and :-
POLAIMG.nbh - OK
RADIO_V2 - OK
BOOTLOADER - OK
SPLASH1 - OK
OS - OK
Update complete
UPDATE SUCCESS
And that's as far as I've got so far.
If I take the SD card out and try a hard reset I just get stuck on the 4 coloured screen I got before, but with no No Image Found message.
I get the same thing with bootloader mode and when I just remove the battery.
If I put the SD card back in I can go through the update process but I can't do anything
else.
So, have I actually made any progress? I'm not actually sure what I have updated and what state the phone is in at the moment. Is the fact that this didn't work an indication of a hardware failure and I should send it off somewhere.
Any advice on next steps would be good.
Jon
what is ur bootloader screen says now?
IPL...
SPL...
Before you can be helped you need to supply this information:
What rom were you using when it died?
What SPL are you using?
You used MITTY and fixes so I assume you're not a complete nunce and have hard spl on your phone, so on that assumption and ONLY if you have hard spl on your phone, try this:
If it isnt a hardware problem, then Its possible you have a dodgy radio flash issue - normally that would have been caused by a bad flash, but you indicated that this happened in use.
Provided it isnt a hardware, to fix this you need to either flash the radio (less reliable, but try it) rename the radio file to POLAIMG.nbh as directed before and stick on SD card.
The other thing to try is to flash a rom with a radio INCLUDED in it. Try and avoid fancy 6.5 beta roms and stick to 6.0 and 6.1 basic roms.
I believe Chavonbravo's VLIT roms come with the radio so try that. Its listed in the forum. I'm not providing links as I dont know what radio you were using and you really need to go for like to like or close. My preference is 1.59.44.02 radio rom if you find one.
Let us know how you do.
Lastly what radio and rom did you have?
Try this one M-AMINES if the radio you had was a 1.59.xx radio as it has the radio included.
if it was a 1.65.xx radio then try the VLIT naked rom.

I've not been a big modifier in the past so it was just using the bog standard O2 software from the O2 website. The name of the file is "RUU_Polaris_O2_UK_3.13.206.0_radio_sign_25.85.30.07_1.59.42.15_Ship.exe" so I presume that there can be information gleaned about things like the SPL, ROM and radio versions?
Not a complete nunce, no, but so very far away from being comfortable with all this. This post was a result of a good few hours trawling through the forums looking for help. Anything I have done has been the result of a post on this site and I am very grateful that there are people willing to share their knowledge.
Anyway, as for hard spl, nope it isn't installed. I'd never needed anything like it before the phone died and now that it has died I can't get onto it to install anything.
Yes, this happened right in the middle of a conversation after a good year or so of normal day to day use. As I said, I haven't needed to make any changes to the phone so the only thing I've ever done is upgraded it with software from the O2 site.
I'm beginning to suspect that without Hard spl my options are very limited and pointing towards either sending it off for costly repairs or just binning the thing. I am probably wrong but I'm guessing that the fact that I don't have it installed is the reason why nothing is happening with the "Update in progress" stuff that is happening now.
Radio & ROM, as above. Whatever the O2 update provided. From the filename radio would be 1.59.42.15.
Many thanks

Well whatever you do dont bin it, we can always use it on the Android project if you decide to go that way.
Ok.. so lets see.. the phone is not picked up at all in windows?
If that is the case, if even a serial connection cant be made then theres issues. At this point, I would disregard all the other advice as it only applies to a hard spl device unfortunately. SD card flashing and all other radio rom flashing will only work with hard spl as far as I know - definitely safer for certain and you dont want to wreck a repairable device.
I take it, its not under warranty, for your mention of costly repair.
The important thing at this stage is a serial or usb connection from a Windows PC. I think I have heard of forcing this connection by opening the device but this would really be in the realms of profficient repairer or enthusiast.
I'll have a look but also do some searching yourself for making a connection to a Windows PC and forcing an SPL onto a phone.
I dont know whether anyone's ever managed to HardSPL a phone using a memory card? Just a thought...
Who would have known.. have a read of this and see if you can follow it up regarding the spl through sd card ..

Hi everybody! I've been visiting XDA for quite a while but never written anything, but now I got a problem that really annoy me.
My HD2 (International, stock) is really getting some strange software bugs lately. One of the more irritation ones is the unability to shut down the phone. Both holding the key and using "Quick EndKey" results in the same thing thing, it goes black but instead of shutting down it just goes back to the home screen.
What should I do?
I'm no tech guy when it comes to computer, phones etc (they mostly risk flying out of the window when messing with me) so everything "everything for dummies".
Edit: "Quick EndKey" actually worked one time right after I posted, but now it fails again.
Try a hard reset of your HD2. Be warned though this will wipe your HD2 back to factory status so make sure all your pictures, videos, documents, and etc are on your SD card. And use Microsoft My Phone to backup your contacts, tasks, calender, and etc.
To do the hard reset hold both the volume up and down buttons down while powering on your HD2 and when you see the screen with instructions pop up follow the instructions.
Thanks for the answer, I'm thinking of trying to go Android instead of just hard resetting. I'm really trying hard to understand things but even the "simple" guides feels like jungles. I guess this will take the whole night...

Here I will try to make things a little simple for you. Make sure you have radio version 2.08.50.xx or higher before flashing MAGLDR. If you already have a radio higher than this you are good.
1. Flash HSPL 2.08 using HSPL 4, I have a link to it in my sig.
2. Flash MAGLDR 1.13 which I also have linked in my sig.
3. Flash the proper sized CWM for the ROM you want, check the ROM thread for the size partition you need with CWM. I also have a link to CWM in my sig
4. Flash your Android ROM using CWM, here is a guide on how to do that.
Also check out my guide in my sig to lean how to flash HSPL, MAGLDR, and CWM plus it will tell you what all the options do. I also have therow guides on how to install Android linked at the top of my guide.
Wish me tons of of good luck!
I'll probably brick it anyway, but hey, at least it looks pretty on the bookshelf...

Do you have a T-Mobile HD2 or a EU HD2? If it is a T-Mobile HD2 look at the radio warning I have for T-Mobile HD2s close to the end of my guide, it is under the Radio information.
It's a EU one, I'm sure as it's bought in a store here in Sweden and was unlocked from the beginning.

Well if it is a EU then you don't have to worry about flashing the wrong radio as EU HD2s can use any radio. Just make sure when you are flashing anything via bootloader like MAGLDR or cLK you do not let the phone accidently become desconnected from the USB cable while flashing is accuring. This is truecalso if youare flashing a official or custom Wimdows mobile ROM. Make sure your HD2 is properly charged also so it will not shut off while uou are flashing anything. This should help you not to brick your HD2.

All you need to do is flash a stock windows mobile rom to your device via your sd card. Also downgrading your HSPL is advisable.
Just stick the needed nbh file on your sd card renamed to leoimg.nbh, then enter bootloader by holding volume down button while powering on and follow steps.
Also using search function in future will help. Any person with some common sense would understand that this topic will have been created and discussed at lengthy before so no need to re-create when teh info already exists.
Go to HTC website and download the ROM for your HD2 (you need to use the phone's serial, thus making sure you have an approved ROM).
Now do a search on here for the SD Card ROM flashing method.
The only thing you need is a 2GB microSD Card (there is known problems with 8GB and greater SD cards).

Above 2 described solutions are INCORRECT - do not try this as you may brick your HD2...
Here is what you need to do:
1. Download HSPL3_PKG, ... google it!
2. Since it may come in rar arhcive extract and run as if you were going to flash the HSPL, hit next on first screen, now you get a drop down list, select 2.08.0000 not 2.08.HSPL. Once you have 2.08.0000 you are ready to install Stock ROM.
3. Run the program / install (by clicking next, next, next, etc)
4. Now just flash your Stock Tmobile WinMo ROM the normal way (via USB).
Stock T-Mobile ROM can be downloaded from their website by entering the IMEI on the website.

Euhm I think you are wrong.
The sd-card methode with the proper rom is the only way to flash it so it places the correct bootlader, radio etc etc etc
For the guy('s) opening the posts with 'how can I flash back for warranty purposes' I wish there would be a new torture feature on your keyboard so it would at least give you a 110V or 230V shock for a couple of seconds.
Browsing the HD2 forum I found a minimum 3 threads which ask exactly the same on the first page.

+1... it seems that they dont see search word at all... or at least browse 2-3 page of forum ... or read sticky threads you find all you want there.

"Incorrect" is quite a bit... well, incorrect in this case.
Only if you are 1000% sure that you are correct, you should choose such words. But in this case, it is definitely a *fail*.
The way you describe does work, too, but it can be confusing for some users. Especially those who ask questions like the OP here...

Huh... a bit harsh, no? But still a good thought, kind of. Maybe a non-physical pain related penalty would be an idea, too? Guess not, as even my grandmother used to say: "Those who don´t want to listen have to feel"...

@ "eenbox" . sd card method is less complicated and more secure me friend... it will write spl, radio, os .... and you are done.
You dont need to search google when you can search in xda ... or just visit sticky threads.
So you are all saying that he can download T-Mobile branded ROM from htc website and flash that one on his T-Mobile US version HD2?
If that works for someone - good luck; I know for a fact it did not for few people when they bricked their phones...

I've done the sd card method on my phone twice, and other peoples phones at least 4 more. They all reset stock spl, radio, and stock rom for warranty purposes.
Flashing a wrong stock rom will brick you for sure though.
The sd card leoimg.nbh method is flawless. Especially when your touchscreen or USB port breaks, its the only way for warranty if you want it replaced.

I recently brought a HTC HD2 and I wanted to change the Windows Mobile OS to the android OS. I tried reading the instruction here on the forum on how to do it but no luck...damn I'm just not techsavvy enough to do this. If anyone have the time to help me...I would appreciate it. I think it would be best if we chatted 1 on 1 on a AIM messenger or whatever on the step-by-step procedures. Thanks!
all the steps are on the guides, you will need to do alot of reading, ill be honest if you read the guides and still dont understand how to do it, you woudl be better off sticking to winmo or putting on an SD version of android
I tried reading the guides but it's confusing as hell with all the instructions scrambling around. Shoot I just don't want to brick my phone...

Ok...then I click 'update' and it gave me this error...I tried to skip the update after many frustration attempts and it's still pops up the same errors.

Mate,
What kind of Android do you want to run on your HD2?
Is it NAND or is it SD Android? Do you know the difference?
If you only want to have SD Android, then it will be easier for you to follow.
And you can keep your WInmo. I mean you will have 2 OS, i.e Winmo and SD Android. Just like mine (see my sig below)
The first thing you have to do is installing SPL 2.08 HSPL.
To do that, you have to go into bootloader screen. How? Turn off your phone.
Now, press the VOLUME DOWN and POWER ON BUTTONS at the same time, and release only after the FOUR COLORS SCREEN appear (Red, Blue, Green and White). If you arrive at this point, then you now know how to boot into the so called "Bootloader Screen".
Now, Check at the white color part (the below part) whether there is any text say: "Serial" (without quote). If yes, now you can connect your hd2 to your PC using USB cable. In doing this, you should plug in the rear (not front) usb port of your PC. If this is the first time, your PC would need time to install the necessary USB driver. If succeeded, you will see the text "Serial" now has changed to "USB". You can proceed to next step, i.e installing SPL 2.08 HSPL.
Remember HSPL is always be required for flashing ROM, etc. You will see it HSPL mentioned all over the HD2 forums. So you have to be able to install HSPL before going to further step.
Sorry, if I forgot, you also have to download HSPL 4. It is an application for installing SPL 2.08 HSPL and other SPL. You can download it from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433&highlight=HSPL+4
Once you downloaded HSPL 4, extract it to whatever folder in your PC.
Keep in mind, it is for PC running MS Windows. If you are running Windows 7, you have to run as an administrator.
Now, while in the bootloader, connected you USB, and the text already changed to "USB", you run HSPL 4 from your PC. You have to follow the instruction there carefully. So, please read the guides provided in the link mentioned above.
If you can achieve this stage, then we can go on to the next level, i.e Flashing Radio, Task 29, etc.
Goodluck

This guy makes it sound difficult For SD Android, you need to go to http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=1043&news_id=782 and install Rom upgrade 3.14 (just connect phone to computer and press a button, that's really all you have to do). You should be fine, but if you want to then check that you have SPL 3.03 and radio 2.15 (in bootloader and WinMo settings>software information respectively) then download an android build (I recommend AmeriCanAndroid), put it on your SD card (Copy and paste) and press two files on file explorer (clrcad and haret). You will then have Android and Windows Mobile
No HPSL, Radio, Task 29 etc needed. In other words: YOU CANNOT BRICK YOUR PHONE.

You best option is to stay away from flashing Android and to stick to Windows Mobile and possibly decide to boot Android from SD instead of flashing. Once you have spent some time reading, learning and understand the process more you can branch out to maybe installing MAGLDR on your device and then flashing Android.
Back to your pathetic and quite frankly childish attempt and insulting me.. What you said only go towards yourself, Any virgin can come up with that crap as an insult "hey you cant get laid", Dude I would put money on it that I was getting laid before you was probably even born or possibly still in primary school. A virgin would definitely put money on the line to prove that they're not a virgin. The only way you going to prove that you got laid is that you paid a hooker to bang you. Bloke, you're just trying too hard to prove something from a random stranger on the internet. You're so funny...that childish attempt of mine seems to hit a nerve because YOU'RE THE ONE that is fazed.
P.S. never take advices from a Brit on how to get laid! LOL!
I must say this thread sums up the difficulty one experiences trying to learn the guides on this site, very badly written, at least for noobs (which is what they all claim to be.. "ultimate noob guide".. not).
There could be just a few choice stickies to solve so many issues... like a post that get updated or voted on as to what is the fastest running rom for X device..
Basic descriptions of the strange terms used.
Explainations that HTC seem to be very unstable when flashing. I have seen one attempt to be flashed 10 times, and the 11th times it JUST WORKED - no rhyme or reason. No wonder people freak out on here.
I have spend a few days just trying to get basic direction, I finally get a rom on my HD2, it is slow and flaky as, but I am hella scared to touch it becuase it was an absolute sh*t fight to get that one on there. Now I have wasted another half day trying to figure out what a better, faster NAND rom will be, if SuperRam is bettr (?!?) jesus christ I just want a stable phone.
You guys flaming people for not knowing the mountain of crap to learn about flashing roms are a bit harsh IMO.

yeah no problem, but do a little reading first cause the steps i give need to make sense to you as well, but this should really be easy and care free. lol
and is your hd2 the tmobile version or EU version, you need to know that, real important when it comes to roms.
what you need to download is as follows, and you can find it in the hd2 android forums:
hspl 4 to unlock phone, 2.15.50 radio, magdlr 1.13, and cwm recovery and the rom you want to run.
1. put your phone in bootloader mode ( while phone is powered down hold volume down and power button) and it will take you to a tri colour screen.
2.with your phone plugged in, it will look and search for the htc drivers and your phone will say usb on the bottom, and when it says that, run the HSPL.exe file you downloaded. this will hack your phone.
3. as soon as your phone reboots hold the volume down and power button to put it back in the tri colour screen. now install the 2.15. radio you downloaded by running the custom ruu, and this will install it for you.
4. now once again, once it completes put your phone into tri coulour screen again, and run magdlr. This will install magdlr for you as well, the bootloader that will replace the original. this is whats going to get you into nand android, or wp7 etc.
5. once thats done phone will reboot, and now it will reboot into magdlr. from here on, you will have to put your phone into usb flasher mode. the phone will install other usb drivers once you do that.
6. once thats done, while on usb flasher mode, install the recovery you downloaded, and using the dft installer, will install the recovery. follow the instructions ins the recovery flasher.
7. when thats down, in magdlr go into ad recovery, and this will put you into the Android recovery.
8. using your volume rocker, go down to mounts/storage, and mount usb/storage, and transfer your rom over to ur sd card.
9. unmount and go into "install zip from sd card." and choose the rom you just transferred. this will take a few minutes, just let it sit till it finishes.
10. once complete go into reboot phone, and watch the magic happen.
Notes: on first boot, usually it will take a lil longer since its running alot of stuff in the background just sit tight and be paitent.
Make sure you download the rom that fits your phone ( tmobile version, or EU)
In the future when you get better and have a little knowledge, using the hd2toolkit is like god, makes alot of things easier with system partions etc...
and like i said please read a little so you can grasp a little knowledge before trying. but you shouldnt really have a problem. Good luck and let me know what else i can do to help and enjoy your new phone!

Nobody will help you more than tecle2595 did above (that was a long and correct answer to your question)
Everything you need to install android without bricking your phone is explained multiple times in details in this forum, and as others said, you even have the luxury to watch youtube videos.
All people here were noobs the first time they joined XDA, and most of us spent hours to decypher the help tutorials. I know it's very hard but you absolutely need to understand all of it if you want to move to android custom roms... otherwhise you'll keep on asking questions on the forum and you'll get stuck at a certain point.
This thread is a good start
Keep on reading the tutorials until you get them, than follow exactly the procedures, and it's guaranteed that you won't brick your phone !

You will never brick your phone by installing software from the Android market, so don't worry about that. In fact, you can't brick an EU HD2 at all as far as I know.
Some things I couldn't live without are:
SetCPU - allows you to control the speed of your CPU whilst performing different tasks.
Titanium Backup - as the name suggests, is a backup tool. Can't count how many times I've used it and my backups have saved my ass.
Juice Defender - Others say it isn't useful, I personally find it helps
Current Widget - Gives you your battery drain, really helps me tell when something's wrong and an app is draining the battery too much
3G watchdog - Measures your 3G usage and warns you if you get near your limit
(For AOSP/CM7) GO Launcher - IMO the best launcher in the market
Dolphin Browser - IMO the best browser in the market
(For AOSP/CM7) ExDialer + Contacts - Stock CM7 dialer isn't as good as this one
Can't think of any more that I really need, so I hope this helps you
