[Q] OTA Update for non-subscribers? - Xoom General

I think I know the answer to this but I just want to confirm. I currently don't have a Verizon subscription and am only using the Xoom with Wifi. When an update comes, will I be notified and will I be able to get it?
I assume I will because the Wifi only version of the Xoom will probably receive the same exact updates.

Updates come from Google's servers, so yes.

I am pretty sure they will all get the OTA updates, but regardless it really doesn't matter. Although I suppose it would be nice for some to know. Activated or not, the Android community will always have an alternative "offline" method for installing the official update like they always do. You know how awesome the dev teams are. So you will always get your latest official stock Android update just as if it were OTA straight from the big guns themselves.

I have two Nexus ones, when i powered the second one, no sim card, and i connected it to wifi i received the OTA update immediately.
So i think yes, unregistered users will get the OTA via wifi

They need to add the thanks button to the app.

Cellular South HTC Hero 2.1 Update (NEXT WEEK!!!!!)

Quote from Cellular South
"We have approved the Hero 2.1 Android update and it has now been handed over to Google and HTC for their final approval. When this occurs, the software will be available to download from the online Discover Center. We will provide more details here next week as soon as it’s available."
Right off their facebook page! YES!!!!
Note: If you want to root your phone later, Do NOT apply this update!!! IF YOU ARE ROOTED, DO NOT APPLY THIS UPDATE EITHER!!! This WILL wipe your phone and root! I will be making a stripped down flashable version once it is released!
Wow sorry to hear you had to wait what, an extra month and a half? That's nuts.

If I want root. I can't apply the update, right?
Do not apply it until there is a confirmed rooted zip. Which we will need a recovery image for. I assume koush could get us something soon.
The update DOES NOT hurt the root. I am rooted and have the update installed

There is a rumor that is also takes away tv out. BUt I think it only takes it off a menu. Waiting for confirmation that it still works.
What are the Samsung code names of the firmwares, before the update and after?
Root works after update too!

2.2.1 update

When is this so called 2.2.1 update coming ota? I've read online that there is a leaked version for those rooted but I'm not and I want my ota update damn it! I asked a rep this weekend and he said "in the next two months" but he also said the same thing when i asked when lte was coming out...oh those silly Verizon workers
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
the reps in store probably do not know when the update is due out.
Yeah... I like asking them questions just to see what how they will answer ya know? But does anyone have any info on the release date?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
There are no dates yet, officially or unofficially. Just stay tuned.
Motorola won't even admit the leak is their work. Get on motorola owners forum you will see the lack of communication on motorolas part. They also refuse to provide any information about possible update timelines... They operate their business like they do their boot loaders...

the last official communication from Motorola is here:
_https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/38876_
While the leak runs like a finished product, there's no guarantee that it's ever coming OTA anyways. It does fix most of what was posted in the link above.
Also, I believe that VZW rep was right about LTE
LTE was launched yesterday(Dec. 5)! As far as a 2.2.1 OTA... only time will tell.

I have compleate faith in Google to make sure this update is here today as promissed!
People put to much faith on Google. In reality it isn't up to them...like any other software that isn't there's on android. Flash is a plus....not a requirement...Google had zero control.sorry

Yes, google has no control on this flash update. Except it was actually adobe who said that flash will be available today. I'm sure it'll be on the market before the end of the day though, or else they (adobe) would've said something about it ( I hope) ..

Yes, I'm curious too. Did it appear as a system update (like the 3.0.1 rollout) ?
Its a market update not part of the system and not supported by OTA.
OTAS are for os and firmware updates only. Not for optional buggy programs
www.redcardgreencard.com
i don't see it in the market yet. What are you all searching for that you're finding it?
Flash does neither appear in the MyApps on my Xoom nor in the Market itself. Where would I then see the option to update? FYI - I used the Flash.apk that was published here in another thread....

Why then is it not in the market. Unless you're full of it, given your track record...
I am waiting to see if the leaked copy allows for auto update on market. I downloaded Dish Remote (Slingbox Player for DishDVR), which is free and originally available on my Droid X, but it did not allow it on the Xoom. It has now since migrated to be available in marketplace for Xoom.
I got the original apk from another site a few days ago, from the initial release not available for the Xoom. Yesterday my apk I download and installed out of market with no listing in the "my apps" popped up in "myapps" area to update it to the latest version. Updated like I had downloaded the original from the market.
It appeared it populated in the myapps area once the unapproved version for Xoom moved over to the available side of the tablet market.

Redundancy of the OP's complaint aside, none of those posts suggest a potential solution to the problem. Does anyone have one? This all stems from a seemingly broken constant connect to Google, which results in most, or all, of the following symptoms:
White connection bars instead of green
Inability to connect with Gtalk
Auto-Sync with any Google service (gmail) disabled, despite check in settings
Someone suggested they were getting a push for an update, but there have been no details, and I'm not seeing anything. Aside from switching back to 2.3.3 or to CM9, is there anything else we can try?

She had no clue on how to fix the issue. According to her. It sounded like a software issue.
I told her my phone was working fine. Till I updated the os.
So supposably something went wrong during my update installation
Ne ways I'm having a replacement phone comming 2morrow. & according to her. it shouldn't have the same issues. *confused* lol

Most Verizon reps seem to think that rooting tampers with hardware... I've been down that road with the Samsung Fascinate. I wasn't thrilled to say the least but I was still able to get a replacement since they couldn't prove that it was the reason why the phone failed. My patience for tech support of any kind is fairly thin due to me being an avid tech enthusiast...

Id be interested to see if the new phone has the same issues, I have flashed back to 2.3.3 multiple times and OTA'd back to 2.3.4 , each time the same problem, gtalk broke and service bars stay grey, and google sync never works unless I manually do it.
I called verizon today and I to have no use for verizon tech support I think each time I was more knowledgeable about my phone and its software/firmware then whoever I was speaking to.
I posted my every bit of the useless conversation I had with verizon in the proper thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25807552#post25807552
I feel like Verizon for some reason rushed the release of this version of gingerbread. There is constant talk that sony let Verizon have it for not updating the phone on time. I smell a rushed update!
Sorry to be a nub amongst you. But, can anyone tell me what improvement 2.3.3 provides over 2.3.2 for r800x. Btw, I'm using a different carrier, running 2.3.2 and bootloader is locked(cwm recovery mode installed and working and rooted). Thanks in advance

Pax I hear you I don't think it was sony getting on verizon about this several customers myself included demanded an update. I know one thing about verizon they want to stay big red so they are not going to have to many upset customers. the 2.3.3 update for the phones was in september. I wonder if Verizon will get an ICS build in june or july. I can dream cant I?
